A couple decades ago, being a startup founder meant packing up and moving to Silicon Valley. It was the only way to easily access customers, investors and advisors. As a result, many entrepreneurship communities have sprouted and developed in different cities, and that includes Nebraska! To kick off Elixir Wizards Season 13, The Creator's Lab, we're joined by Zach Daniel, the creator of Igniter and the Ash framework. Zach joins hosts Owen Bickford and Charles Suggs to discuss the mechanics and aspirations of his latest brainchild, Igniter—a code generation and project patching framework designed to revolutionize the Elixir development experience. Igniter isn't just about generating code; it's about generating smarter code. By leveraging tools like Sourcerer and Rewrite, Igniter allows developers to modify source code and batch updates by directly interacting with Elixir's AST instead of regex patching. This approach streamlines new project setup and package installations and enhances overall workflow. They also discuss the strategic implications of Igniter for the broader Elixir community. Zach hopes Igniter will foster a more interconnected and efficient ecosystem that attracts new developers to Elixir and caters to the evolving needs of seasoned Elixir engineers. Topics discussed in this episode: Advanced package installation and code generation improve the developer experience Scripting and staging techniques streamline project updates Innovative methods for smoother installation processes in Elixir packages High-level tools apply direct patches to source code Progressive feature additions simplify the mix phx.new experience Chaining installers and composing tasks for more efficient project setup Continuous improvement in developer experiences to boost Elixir adoption Encourage listeners to collaborate by sharing code generation patterns Introduction of a new mix task aimed at removing the "unless" keyword in preparation for Elixir 1.18 You can learn more in the upcoming book "Building Web Applications with Ash Framework" by Zach and Rebecca Links mentioned: https://smartlogic.io/ https://alembic.com.au/blog/igniter-rethinking-code-generation-with-project-patching https://hexdocs.pm/igniter/readme.html https://github.com/ash-project/igniter https://www.zachdaniel.dev/p/serialization-is-the-secret https://www.zachdaniel.dev/p/welcome-to-my-substack https://ash-hq.org/ https://hexdocs.pm/sourceror/readme.html https://smartlogic.io/podcast/elixir-wizards/s10-e09-hugo-lucas-future-of-elixir-community/ https://github.com/hrzndhrn/rewrite https://github.com/zachdaniel https://github.com/liveshowy/webauthn_components https://hexdocs.pm/elixir/Regex.html https://github.com/msaraiva/vscode-surface https://github.com/swoosh/swoosh https://github.com/erlef/oidcc https://alembic.com.au/ https://www.zachdaniel.dev/ Special Guest: Zach Daniel.

François Bitouzet, the guest of honor, then dives straight into the heart of the Viva Tech 2024 event, providing detailed insights into its scope, significance, and impact. An Overview of Viva TechFrançois explains that Viva Tech is a four-day event held annually in Paris, focusing on bringing together stakeholders in the innovation sphere. This year's event saw the participation of 155,000 attendees from 120 countries, showcasing thousands of startups, tech leaders from companies like Google and Meta, corporate giants such as Audi and LVMH, as well as public sector representatives. The Unique Format and InitiativesOne of the most distinctive features of Viva Tech 2024 was its two-fold format. For the first three days, the event catered to the B2B audience, allowing startups and investors to network and collaborate. On the final day, it opened its doors to the general public. This approach aimed to make technology accessible to everyone, regardless of their professional background.François highlighted various initiatives like the “100+100” program, where 100 successful business women in tech spent a day mentoring young girls. This not only promoted diversity and inclusion but also inspired the next generation to pursue careers in technology.Focus on AI and Other InnovationsWhile Artificial Intelligence (AI) was a major talking point, François emphasized that the event delved deeper into how AI is shaping different business sectors rather than just focusing on the technology itself. By bringing in sector-specific insights, the event sought to provide a realistic perspective on the current impact and future potential of AI.Memorable Moments and CreativityFrançois shared several memorable moments from the event, including a live Q&A session with Elon Musk, who joined virtually to answer unfiltered questions from the audience. This showcased the raw and authentic engagement the event aims to foster.Another highlight was the collaboration with the European retailer FNAC, which set up a kiosk where speakers could sign books for the attendees. This initiative bridged the gap between traditional formats and modern technology, exemplifying how the old and the new can coexist harmoniously.Looking AheadAs the conversation winded down, Marco and François discussed the future of Viva Tech, hinting at more surprises and creative content for next year. François emphasized the importance of injecting poetry and romance—metaphorically speaking—into the world of tech to retain its human touch and inspirational value.Call to ActionFinally, Marco encouraged listeners to make plans to attend Viva Tech 2025, expressing his excitement about potentially meeting his audience in person. François echoed this sentiment, inviting everyone to experience the blend of innovation, business, and meaningful impact that Viva Tech promises.ConclusionThe episode concluded with both Marco and François expressing their shared optimism for the future of technology and its potential to not only transform industries but also enhance our quality of life. They agreed that events like Viva Tech are crucial in driving this change by making technology accessible, inclusive, and genuinely impactful.____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-cybersecurity-society-humanity-conference-and-event-coverage____________________________ResourcesLearn more about VIVA TECH 2024: https://vivatechnology.com/____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastAre you interested in sponsoring our event coverage with an ad placement in the podcast?Learn More

Jeff Seibert is co-founder of Digits, a beautifully designed accounting and reporting platform that essentially sits on top of Intuit's QuickBooks. It then uses that data, plus API-based integrations on incoming and outgoing money in its business, to create a massive information database. Digits then begins to organize and read that data to create more intelligence around it, such as providing automatic answers to the kinds of “how” or “why” questions that an accountant or other finance pro might have around a basic financial report, the kinds of answers that previously would have only been possible through human queries, and being able to read and understand the stories behind paper trails and siloed sources of data. Digits Reports will sit alongside and is based around a search feature that Digits launched last year to help users find transactions that tap into a similar idea: answers are not found just through keywords but in results. Digits has raised $97.5 million from SoftBank's Vision Fund, U.K. investor Harry Stebbings' 20VC Growth, GV, and Benchmark.Where to find Jeff Seibert:• Website: Digits - Accounting, • LinkedIn (13) Jeff Seibert | LinkedInWhere to find Hadi Radwan:• Newsletter: Principles Friday | Hadi Radwan | Substack• LinkedIn: Hadi Radwan | LinkedInIf you like our podcast, please don't forget to subscribe and support us on your favorite podcast players. So much drama this episode but with an important message behind it all. For the first half, Sam and Jason break down their stories about Eduards Sizovs, a tech conference founder who listed a fake, "auto-generated" woman as a conference speaker. Sizovs is also behind a highly popular woman-in-tech account. There are layers here. After the break, Jason explains how Plex is leaking users' viewing habits to one another.
