POPULARITY
Eva Peron – otherwise known as Evita - became an icon in 1940s Argentina, famous for her passionate speeches and populist rhetoric. Born into poverty, she moved to Buenos Aries at the age of 15 to become an actress, and was soon starring in radio soap operas. In 1945, she married Colonel Juan Peron, a rising figure in the Argentinian military, and supported his campaign to become president. After he won the election, she set up the Eva Perón Foundation, to distribute money, food and medicines to the poor. It won her the adulation of Argentina's working classes, although some believed she exploited her position for personal gain.Eva fell ill with cancer, and on 17 October 1951, she made her last major public appearance from the presidential palace balcony. It was to be her most famous speech, later inspiring the award-winning song, Don't Cry for Me Argentina, from the musical Evita.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Eva Peron in 1951. Das Schicksal Eva Peróns wurde durch das Lied „Don't Cry for Me Argentina“ weltbekannt, aber eine Ikone war die junge Frau schon lange davor.
My guest today worked for Club Med from 1990 to 1999 and was a Set Designer, Choreographer, and Chief of Animation. He met John Shelly in New York City on an elevator and John gave him his business card. A few months later, my guest called John and was in a village less than a week later! His first season was in Club Med St. Lucia in 1990 as a Set Designer. Please help me welcome, from Toronto, Ontario, the only and only, Graham Maxwell!! As I discovered during this interview, Graham is one heck of a raconteur so get ready to be entertained! I don't want to spoil any of his stories, so please do yourself a favor and listen to his entire interview! Graham tells a story about how he was not really feeling his first season, but a talk with Angie Boucher (who was Aerobics at the time) about how animation works and how Club Med functions as a whole, changed his mind and he decided to stay. Graham worked with many notable CDVs such as Kevin Batt, Hammer, Dirk Nouira, Pierre Letellier Gagnon, Howard McCarley, and Miredieu, to name but a few. Graham talks about one of the shows he is most known for and that is the rock opera “Tommy”, which he saw on Broadway in 1993 and adapted for a Club Med audience. He had quite the celebrity encounters, including being Jennifer Coolidge's scene partner when the Groundlings, an improvisation and sketch comedy theatre from Los Angeles, came to Turks and Caicos in 1996-1997. He also met Joel Grey, Mitzie Gaynor, Mickey Rooney, Patti LuPone, and five-time Grammy award winner Michael Bublé, who was a Club Med Artiste in Club Med Cancun in '97 if you can believe that! Graham mentions a lot of names from the past, so if you were an early 90s G.O., you will love this episode with a very entertaining person! (Editor's note: The song by Patti Lupone that I meant was the best song ever sung is “Don't Cry for Me Argentina” from the Broadway play “Evita” and not the song Evita as I had stated). Please enjoy!! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. What was the pettiest thing we learned in Prince Harry's new memoir Spare? The cringiest? The most unbelievable? And what space do Harry and Meghan Markle occupy in our culture now? Sam chats with Royally Obsessed podcast hosts Rachel Bowie and Roberta Fiorito about the book and if the limit exists on rehashing H&M's drama with the Royal Family. We also ask comedian Taylor Garron if she is into the horror phenomenon of M3GAN. And we hear about the culture that's haunting us: We've overlooked the talent of Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, as evidenced by her performance of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" that far surpasses Madonna's. You know EXACTLY the kind of movie we're talking about today - you know exactly when you're going to cry and what kind of cry it's going to be...and that winds up being totally okay with you. It's the kind of cry that, once it's over, actually makes you feel kind of good because the emotions are heartwarming tales of true love, personal triumph, or a wealth of other things. Like...the music swell coming up during EVITA when Madonna beings singing "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" on the Casa Rosada. Or...Forest Gump and Jenny in Washington DC. Or...fill in the blank. That's what Annie and I are talking about today. Annie brought some amazing context to this show as well so I'm really proud of the conversation. And you know that an episode like this is going to have a flip side - so be on the lookout for the episode featuring Tearjerkers We Will Never, EVER, Watch Again. Do you have a Top Five list you'd like us to consider? Or maybe you thought this week's episode was shit? That's okay - we still want to hear about it! Send us an email at hello@thetopfivepodcast.com We'll catch up with you on next week's episode!!

In this introductory episode I cover three main things – who I am, what Yerba Media is, and what this podcast is all about. You’ll get to hear some of my background, learn why I’m obsessed with yerba mate, and understand the format and purpose of this show. You’ll also hear me attempt to impersonate Ron Burgundy, talk about Jedi, and of course grovel and and beg for your support (#patreon, amiright?) I’ll admit, it’s not the most thrilling of all podcast episodes, but it’s a good introduction to Pilgrim’s Perspective nonetheless :)Connect:WebsiteInstagramJoin email list (for behind-the-scenes goodies!)Patreon Timestamps (feel free to skip around):(01:00): Me/Argentina/time abroad(02:45): Intercultural studies(03:14): Intro to Yerba Media and yerba mate (and very poor Ron Burgundy impression)(06:07): “Identity” part of YM mission statement, counseling metaphors(08:15): “21st Century” part of YM mission statement(08:51): Jedi Council(09:31): Why a podcast?(10:21): Premise/format/purpose of show(11:25): Patreon – join the cause!(12:37): How to connect/get special goodies by signing up for email list(13:25): We groovin’ baby! We recorded this episode in a spooky cabin in the middle of nowhere and you can tell because it is CHOCK FULL of ghosts: Finn's virginity! Kurt and Rachel's friendship! Mercedes! Our sobriety! Also: equally dramatic interpretations of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and Robbie's funeral. This is a fun one, honestly. If you travel down to Ushuaia, Argentina, you might just find a bus plastered with a massive photograph of Sam Evans-Brown. In that photo, he's sprinting, shoulder to shoulder, with Olympic cross-country ski-racer Martin Bianchi in the final stretch of the 2008 national ski championship of Argentina. Today, Sam brings us the backstory to that photograph--a story about a split-second act of kindness that altered the course of Martin's life, and about figuring out when it's time to leave the races behind. Sam hosts the podcast 'Outside In', a show from New Hampshire Public Radio about the natural world and how we use it. A version of this story originally aired on 'Outside In'. You can find "Don't Cheer for Me Argentina" here.
The Ringer's Juliet Litman and Mallory Rubin discuss Chase and Derek's two-on-one date with JoJo. Then, they talk about the scene featuring a live singer's melodramatic rendition of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" after Derek's dismissal. Later, they debate the merits of being serenaded by a piano player versus a guitar player and talk about why more NFL families should be on reality TV.
This week, Elizabeth Thomas and cohosts Carl Kozlowski and Tanya Yarbrough discuss the moments where life seems to really get messy and out of control. Our songs this week include "Holy Mother" by Eric Clapton & Luciano Pavarotti (Amazing!), "Ave Maria" by Barbra Streisand, "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" by Karen Carpenter, and "Money Don't Matter 2 Nite" by Prince.
