It doesn’t like the heat! Even I live in the Northern climate but it still get’s hot in the summer. Plus the increasing daylight although it was just the solstice but now we actually have getting decreasing daylight.  But the increasing sunlight cause things to bolt and go to flower After you get one or two harvests you’ll see it’s trying to push up a flower which means it’s bolting It’s gonna try to set seed often because it’s stressed which is often because of the heat A common questions when I’m out and about and at classes   People ask me “How do I grow Cilantro?” It likes conditions it likes are cool not in the summer better luck in spring and summer or fall some people might be listening in winter Try to plant it as early as possible plant cilantro a month before my average last frost mid may OR plant in mid April If conditions are ok you want to plant about a month before last frost it’s gonna be a lot happpier If you have a cold frame or low tunnel, you can plant it even a month before that mid March. I have been experimenting with that! But even if you plant it early, its gonna go to seed, it’s gonna bolt So one tip is just keep PLANTING! You don’t plant it once and think you are going to have it for the rest of the season. So keep planting. It’s one of the vegetables best for succession planting I wrote myself last year, remind myself to plant cilantro every two weeks! Just keep planting a row every week every two weeks You’ll notice as it get’s close to summer it bolts pretty quickly I harvest it and try to cut it short, to prevent it from bolting. Some of the leaves grow back This is my cilantro this year had already bolted back at the end of June. What do you do after it bolts? Do you pull it out, let it go to seed? After it bolts I love the flowers! I think they’re really pretty Beneficial insects like it. I found ladybugs and other insects on there let it flower go to seed gets top heavy We had rain over vacation, and it flopped over and covering them, so I yanked it out in general I tell people that once a plant isn’t producing get it out so you can get another crop in there keep in mind for insects too carrots or beets wait a little space empty planting fall garden another tip is if you can keep it cooler in the summer you might have better luck!  plant in garden that is shade I went to visit these friends and they put it in a place that is shady which is not that great for veggies or salad greens in August I don’t have a lot of salad greens or cilantro They had a full lush bed, because they had it in such a shady bed So if you have a shady part in your garden, great place to plant that don’t like the hot weather Shade Cloth An experiment I am doing this year is I bought some shade cloth lightly woven black mesh If you look online you can see there are different thicknesses that blocks out a certain amount of light I got one that blocks about 30% of the light because I need some light to grow vegetables But in the late afternoon shade cilantro salad mix in there can I keep salad mix growing throughout the summer... Super Easy Food Preserving (http://www.creativevegetablegardener.com/) I’m super excited this morning because today’s featured guest is the Megan Cain (http://www.creativevegetablegardener.com/) ! (http://www.creativevegetablegardener.com/) Welcome back Megan! I spoke with Megan in  Smart Start Planning Guide (https://organicgardenerpodcast.com/smart-start-garden-planner-2017-megan-cain/) in Feb!) Mini-Farm Preserving I reached out to her because Mike has been so busy down with the mini farm! He has already canned: 51 pints of beans 12 pints of pickled beets 9 pints of carrots 14 1/2 pints of Oregon grape jelly and when he was making the grape jelly he was going thru Megan’s book (http://amzn.to/2ww7KBc) and kept coming up to me saying did you see this? Did you know this? Haven’t you been asking me about this? And so I asked Megan if she wanted to come back and talk with us again about her amazing book Super Easy Food Preserving Quick Techniques for Fresh, Fridge and Freezer Storage. (http://amzn.to/2ww7KBc) Some of my favorite features in the book is she has a great worksheet right off the bat where you start strategically thinking about your garden needs. I always love worksheets and checklists! And it’s full of questions I wouldn’t think of necessarily like “What foods do I want to eat out of season? What tastes better when I eat them during the local growing season?” Sounds like Mike’s been busy! 2017 Garden Challenges Yes, but we’ve been having so many challenges this year! Deer  Squirrels Hail Fires Voles Mice Bugs and insects Drought – no rain since June Predators – Skunks or something got the duck and one of our cats I do a lot of food preserving. I lived on a farm and we did a lot of preserving. And mostly we did canning. We moved to Wisconsin. Then we moved here I had a garden, I thought that’s how I preserve food, I did a lot of canning, but I didn’t really like it!  There’s got to be some easier ways to preserve food then canning I did research and so I talked to people and started to piece together quicker and easier ways to preserve food then canning!  I started to tell friends and neighbors I saw that was a common belief. When people think about canning! That’s what my book explores. (http://amzn.to/2ww7KBc) If you like canning you should continue to do it! But for people who don’t have time for canning need equipment easier ways don’t need special equipment! We do have one or two days to can salsa because I haven’t found a good substitute. We do a little bit of canning, it’s hard to fit it in and we kind of dread it but we do it because we love having salsa fresh fridge freezer Fresh storage So the first thing I ask is “Can I store the vegetable fresh?” And garlic! I dry it in my garage. Once it’s dry I put it in boxes in my basement. Then we eat our own garlic all year round!  I don’t have to can it or freeze it or antyhing! I just dry it stick it in my basement That’s a good example of something you can store fresh! (https://www.facebook.com/CreativeVegetableGardener/) The next category is the Fridge So if I can’t store it fresh I say, “Can I store it in the fridge?” Beets and carrots store for a long time in your fridge! I usually grow fall beets and carrots! I leave them in the garden as long as natural in Wisconsin. Before it gets too cold and the ground: snap off tops pack in plastic bags shove them in the bottom and back of fridge they last in April, May, and June of the next year! necessarily people like canned picked beets When you store things in the fridge you can decide later that’s last category FREEZE things you can... This episode was originally published in May of 2015. Always good to hear from Megan Cain! Episode 44: Megan Cain | Creative Vegetable Gardener Website | Madison, WI   44. Megan Cain | Creative Vegetable Gardener Website | Madison, WI If you haven’t checked out Megan’ Cain’s  Save Yourself from $5 Red Peppers in January (http://www.creativevegetablegardener.com/freezing-red-peppers/) ” one of my favorite veggies and always so expensive in the store, plus they always feel like they have that wax coating. Tell us a little about yourself. I’m Megan and I live and garden in Madison, WI, pretty far northern climate pretty cold. I own a vegetable garden education business called the  Creative Vegetable Gardener (http://www.creativevegetablegardener.com)   which helps people get the most out of their garden. So I teach classes and speak around my area in Madison, WI I have online classes and a blog post once a week, and have a few ebooks, and actually just turned one of my online books into a print book. Tell me about your first gardening experience? Since I’m a garden educator, and I spend a lot of time gardening and I know a lot about gardening, I think a lot of people assume I grew up in a farm, but I actually grew up in a row home in Philadelphia, I didn’t know anyone that had a garden, I never even thought about gardening or how vegetables grew. I didn’t have a lot of experience growing up. I do have a very faint memory when I was very young, my mom experimented with having a backyard garden. She was successful at growing mint and she would send me out to the back yard to get mint for the ice tea. I think it had a bigger impact on me then I realized and sort of manifested it on me as I grew up.  Megan’s About Page (http://www.creativevegetablegardener.com/about/)  is a must read. What does organic gardening/earth friendly mean to you? I don’t know how to garden any other way, cause that’s the way I learned how to garden, so sometimes I joke with people I wouldn’t even know how to tell people how to garden non-organically. Paying attention to soil health because that supports all of my plants. Then when I am having an issue in my garden, I start researching it, try to figure out what is the pest, how does it live, or function in the garden, what are the steps I could take to try to get rid of it out of my garden. Looking into any kinds of problems in my garden instead of looking for a quick solution in chemicals, and there are some thing I have stopped trying to grow in my garden because it’s such a struggle to try to grow them organically, I have given myself permission to give up. I consider myself a strategic gardener, and I love to spend time in my garden but I don’t want to waste time in my garden. So I definitely want a garden that produces as much food as possible, and I also want a beautiful garden because my garden is in my front yard, so I see it all the time and out my window. I demand a lot from my garden. I’ve seen a lot of people’s gardens. The majority of people are not getting the most out of their gardens. A lot of people could be more strategic and produce more food. Who or what inspired you to start using organic techniques? Well, I talked a little bit about my earliest gardening memory, but in my 20’s I was still living in the big cities, I don’t know where it came from, but I started to think about gardening and I wanted to learn how to grow food. So I applied for an organic gardening internship and moved to a small intentional community in Missouri, and I was an intern there for a season. One of the first people I met was probably I don’t think was particularly skilled gardener, he was trying to grow a lot of food for a lot of people. I learned a lot about what not to do. Remember waking up in my tent and my hands would be clamped close. There was a lot of labor, they didn’t use any machinery, so it was pretty intense labor, so maybe now I... Support this podcast

One of the things I appreciated the most about Lisa’s book, is that she divided the 125 houseplants featured in her book into three helpful categories: Easy to Grow, Moderately Easy-to-Grow, and Don’t-Try-This-at-Home-It’s-A-Waste-of-Money-and-Time-and-You-Really-Need-That-New-Pair-of-Shoes. Just kidding. 207: Megan Cain on Garden Planning Joining a Legion of Gardening addicts through sensible preparation and design. Megan grew up an urban girl in a row home in Philadelphia. She never saw a vegetable growing in the ground until well into her 20's. A few years ago, she quit her job and traveled to Africa for two months to volunteer with a fair trade organization.  Now, she is a garden educator, writer and speaker. She has developed one of the first youth gardening programs in Madison, designed and installed gardens in many homeowners' yards, managed a quarter-acre youth farm, worked on CSA farms, created a series of gardening class that often have waiting lists, and tends to a large home garden. She knows what works and what doesn't…and loves to share it. Megan is setting out to create a legion of gardening addicts that successfully and passionately grow their own food. Through her gardening education business, The Creative Vegetable Gardener, she helps people get more from their gardens by first mastering the essentials and then indulging in the colorful details that make gardening not just a favorite pastime, but a lifestyle. In This Podcast:  Acquiring a love of gardening transformed Megan into a fully focused farmer and she tells Greg how she went from being an naive urbanite with no plant growing experience to a gardening educator and resource to kids and adults alike.
