Join us for a conversation with Mez McConnell, the director of 20Schemes and the author of numerous books, including The Creaking on the Stairs: Finding Faith in God Through Childhood Abuse and Is There Anybody Out There?: A Journey from Despair to Hope.
As Jesus faces his impending death, he humbly washes his disciples' feet, demonstrating the depth of his love and the true nature of servanthood. This act challenges the disciples' self-centered attitudes and calls them to a life of sacrificial love for God and others. Mez McConnell exhorts the audience to consider how the love of Christ should compel them to go to the "least, the last, and the lost" with the gospel, even if it means forsaking their own dreams and comforts. The ultimate question posed is: "Why are you here?" - is it to pursue your own agenda, or to wholeheartedly serve the one who loved you to the end?

Some stories of redemption present a sharper picture, especially when we come upon the stories of torture and abuse. This story is especially powerful, as God's redemption comes to a man who faced serious abuse as a little boy between his second and thirteenth year. The book is entitled -The Creaking of the Stairs.- Author Mez McConnell is pastor of Niddrie Community Church near Edinburgh. Nothing can address the pain, the confusion, the injustices, and the sheer evil of a world of abuse like the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the doctrines of God's holiness, His sovereignty, His judgment, and His propitiatory sacrifice of His only begotten Son. Here is a helpful testimony, and wisdom for how to minister to the abused in your families and churches.--This program includes---1. When we imagine Scotland, we might think of castles, rugged hills, or reformers like John Knox. But in Scotland's housing schemes—inner-city neighborhoods burdened by poverty and crime—the reality is very different. These schemes are in desperate need of local, Bible-preaching churches. Through Church in Hard Places, Acts 29 works closely with 20schemes, a ministry seeking to plant healthy, multiplying churches of gospel light in the darkest corners of Scotland. Mez McConnell joins the podcast today to discuss church planting in Scotland through 20schemes and Acts 29. Mez is one of the pastors of Niddrie Community Church in Edinburgh and the founder of 20schemes. He's written several books, worked in inner-city areas in England, Scotland, and Brazil, and has a particular passion for training men and women for ministry in this context.
Mez McConnell, pastor at Niddrie Community Church in Edinburgh, shares how his church has been serving through lockdown. How can churches and church leaders respond to hidden domestic abuse in church life? The problems of domestic abuse have been highlighted through the Covid crisis, and many church leaders feel inadequate to know how to respond. Mez McConnell and Sharon Dickens, from Niddrie Community Church and 20 Schemes join FIEC National Director John Stevens to help us think about how we can pastorally serve our churches and people in the area of domestic violence. You can access further resources on the FIEC website.

You won't hear trite Christian answers listening to Scottish pastor Mez McConnell. His personal story of coming to Christ is too painful for that. "Do I think that God is absolutely sovereign over everything, even over my abuse? Yes," says McConnell. "Am I comfortable or happy about that? Sometimes, no, I'm not." In 2007, Mez McConnell was hired as a pastor for an outreach post in a Scottish scheme. As a scheme is similar to any project or inner city neighborhood, few members of this “mission” actually lived in the neighborhood. Mez, himself, was encouraged to live elsewhere by those who hired him. Listen to our conversation with Mez on how he moved into this neighborhood, re-planted a church, and now leads a congregation who lives there. In this episode we discuss living near your church in poor communities, safety issues, the idolatry of family, and why Mez tells Christians who live elsewhere to find a church where they live.
"God doesn't exist. And if He does, He's one sick individual," thought Mez McConnell, a childhood victim of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his stepmom. McConnell describes his heartbreaking path from abuse to schoolyard bullying and, ultimately, to a prison term before finding the love of Jesus.

"I'll punch your face in, mate". That's what Mez Mcconnell said to a fellow student while he was at Bible college. "I guess the guys weren't ready for that kind of discourse," he says, looking back. Mez was involved in violent crime from the age of 14. He committed fraud, spent time in prison and describes his teenage years as "manic" and "wild". So when he became a Christian, a lot had to change. It didn't happen overnight, and Mez laughs at the idea its all been plain sailing since (see the aforementioned Bible college altercation). "I thought church was for pansies" he remembers. But as he read the book of Romans, he was convicted of his own sin, realising he couldn't blame his difficult past or upbringing for the life he was now living. Mez is often outspoken on issues relating to class and Christianity, describing evangelicalism as "unbelievable elitist". He also claims prominent church leaders have ignored what he's had to say, dismissing him as having a chip on his shoulder. And when it comes to fundraising for his organisation 20schemes - which plants churches on Scottish housing estates - he says "no one in England or Scotland" would give him money, so he's decided to fundraise in the USA instead. In this wide-ranging conversation with Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes, Mez delves into all these issues and more.
