This week, Dr. Reyes talks with Dr. Michaela O'Donnell about her journey from a small town in the Midwest, through the American South, out to Los Angeles, then returning home to the people and places that nurtured her. The foundational love of family coupled with extensive wandering allowed Michaela to find new experiences and perspectives that she carries with her in both family and work life. Michaela's current work as executive director of the Max De Pree Center for Leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary allows her to help leaders across industries think about how they can show up in their work in ways that graft onto God's redemptive mission in the world. She believes that spiritually formed leaders can and do change the world. Michaela is the author of Make Work Matter: Your Guide to Meaningful Work in a Changing World. "How do you lead well while grieving?" In leadership you will face a variety of different seasons. Sometimes those seasons can be rough, and we will have to walk through grief while also leading well. That's the focus of our listener's question today and I am joined by Dr. Michaela O'Donnell to explore how to do that well. Michaela speaks from her experience and research on meaningful work expressed in her book Make Work Matter: Your Guide to Meaningful Work in a Changing World. The book is for all of us who want to untangle ourselves from all the mantras about work that don't quite work. Dr. Michaela O'Donnell is back with us today. And for this conversation I focused on her personally. Not her book or really even the work she does at the Max De Pree Center for Leadership. We all know people that seem to be made of something different-they're killin' it in every area of life. If you looked at Michaela's accomplishments you'd think the same of her, so I asked her if she'd be willing to demystify things for us about her personal life. Where does she fail? How can she do so much and what is she learning? You're going to need to listen back to this one. Please enjoy Dr. Michaela O'Donnell freeing you from having to do it all.

Jesus replied simply: "Love God, love your neighbor." I imagine He was thinking,"It's not rocket science" or "What's not to like?" or "It's not complicated." He was right, it's not complicated. Today, many people struggle to figure out their purpose in life and know if their lives are significant. In this episode, we go over truths found within Dr. Michaela O'Donnell's book Make Work Matter in hopes to help bring people a sense of peace in a world of hustle culture.
We speak with Dr. Michaela O'Donnell, the Executive Director of the Max De Pree Center for Leadership, and Assistant Professor of Marketplace Leadership at Fuller Seminary about her book Make Work Matter: Your Guide to Meaningful Work in a Changing World. We discuss the influence of work through seasons of holy wrestling, overcoming the symptoms of change, and the relevance of the entrepreneurial way.
As we look forward to our Annual Faith + Work Conference: Meaningful Work in an Age of Disruption this Saturday, April 2, 2022, the Center for Faith + Work Los Angeles is proud to present Part 2 of the conversation with one of our thoughtful speakers, Michaela O'Donnell. Michaela is Executive Director of the Max De Pree Center for Leadership at Fuller Seminary and will be talking with our own Robert Covolo, Director of Vocational Discipleship at CFWLA. In this episode, they discuss the way work forms us + seeing the fruit in our work, the importance of relationships and people in all types of work, the problem of "pursuing our passions" and the role ambiguity plays in vocation. — On why "pursuing your passions" is a problem (Michaela O'Donnell; 7:56) "It's very us-focused...when we are the center of what's going to make things happy for us, I worry a lot about that it feels dissonant with the Christian story." On ambiguities at work (Michaela O'Donnell; 11:43) "Tetherball. You have a tire on the ground, a pole that goes up, and a large string with a ball attached to it. And you try to hit it back and forth and you're trying to get the ball to go all the way around. And when I picture what we're going to need / what it's going to feel like to tolerate ambiguity. I picture it kind of like that, we are going to probably be whipped around by the wind and change. But, we are attached, we are tethered to Jesus Christ, the story of God, what we know to be the arch of God's mission in the world and what God continues to reveal through the Holy Spirit."
As we anticipate our Annual Faith + Work Conference: Meaningful Work in an Age of Disruption on April 2, 2022, the Center for Faith + Work Los Angeles is proud to present this two-part conversation with one of our esteemed speakers, Michaela O'Donnell. Michaela is Executive Director of the Max De Pree Center for Leadership at Fuller Seminary and will be talking with our own Robert Covolo, Director of Vocational Discipleship at CFWLA. In this episode, they discuss the road that brought Michaela where she is today—from her inclination to entrepreneurship, to the challenges she's faced in her career. Michaela and Robert will also explore the need for creativity, flexibility and lamentation in all believers' vocations. — On the winding road that brought her where she is today (Michaela O'Donnell; 2:00) "The fact that I am somebody who teaches who myself likes to start things, who likes to encourage others to start things and who teaches people who will never be entrepreneurs, more about the root things that they can adopt for their own life. I shouldn't be surprised, but I'm still surprised." On the importance of lament and the capacity to endure failure (Michaela O'Donnell; 11:25) "The capacity to deal with failure, I think is strengthened by the practice of lament for Christians. Lament is a biblical framework for being able to go and shake our fist at God, tell God, hey, we're really mad, we're gonna complain about what's happening. And in the same breath, we trust you God, we love you, God. And this thing totally sucks. Right? And, and we trust you, right? It's got this back and forth."

Michaela regularly writes and teaches on topics of vocation, change, innovation, creativity, faith/work, and gender dynamics in leadership. In today's episode, Michaela and I chat about: ~ Why passion is a dysfunctional belief as it relates to our work ~ What we should focus on more than passion ~ How hustle works AGAINST advancement~ The "entrepreneurial way" even for those who will never start a business~ and how to play the long game of vocation Society today tells us it's all about passion and hustle. If you have the passion, you'll never “work” another day in your life. If you have the hustle, you will succeed. But truthfully, it doesn't always work out that way. There is so much more depth to our work than what passion and hustle can and does give us. Maybe the dysfunctional belief in passion is holding you back. Or maybe, the non-stop hustle is keeping you from advancing in your career. May today's episode encourage you to see your vocational calling in a new, revitalized way. Dr. Michaela O'Donnell: Author of "Make Work Matter, Your Guide to Meaningful Work in a Changing World" Executive director of Fuller Seminary's De Pree Center for, Leadership, Michaela O'Donnell helps readers pursue meaningful work that will forge inspiring transformation in the world. People are sent into a new world of work with old, outdated tools, expectations, and strategies. Unmet expectations, unfulfilled longings, and a curiosity about how to do the work they sense God is calling them to. Built from research on exemplars who excel at navigating the unknown and filled with stories and insights from faithful entrepreneurs, Make Work Matter (Baker Books, Oct. 2021), teaches readers to: • discover what God is calling them to do in a changing world • define where they are in this season of work • embrace what the Bible says (and doesn't say) about calling • develop a mindset and habits suited for the new world of work • reflect on and work out ways that sustain them on the journey This book will close the gap between what people are doing now and the meaningful work they desire to accomplish. What does it look like to pursue meaningful work in a changing world? Michaela O'Donnell helps people do just that. We talk about recalibrating expectations regarding the pace of change, what to do when your dreams don't happen right away, and how to look for breadcrumbs of God's providence along the way. In this episode, listen for my three big takeaways: That your dream coming to life is likely going to take longer than you anticipate and the importance of recalibrating your expectations. The value of taking time to reflect along the way, including processing the grief that comes with failure. And how a spirit of gratitude for whatever comes can shift your heart and mind.
