Send us a textThis week on the Get More Smarter Podcast, the federal government is running out of time (again) to pass a continuing resolution (again) to fund the government for another few months (again), and our 8th favorite member of Congress is pretty responsible for it (again!) Then, the Colorado legislature cut about a billion dollars in taxes over the past few years and now the state budget is short about….a billion dollars! Are these things related? Well, sort of! Then, Donald Trump, yes that one, is apparently planning a visit to Aurora, Colorado to negotiate with the Venezuelan Gangs who have taken over the city! Just kidding, he's probably just going to make a fool of Mike Coffman for the 3,000th time. Next, Gabe-ish Evans had to fire an anti-semitic-ish staffer who said some really batshit-ish-ish on Facebook. And finally, the Triple Dave Williams saga is back!

It wasn't the biggest election of our lifetimes. It wasn't even the biggest election in Denver this year! But this past Tuesday's results will reshape our lives, and our politics, in some big ways. Producer Paul Karolyi is breaking down the results and looking to the future with returning guest Joshua Emerson, a stand-up comic and the co-chair of the Denver American Indian Commission, and one of our favorite political insiders — longtime Democratic Party strategist and one of the co-hosts of the Get More Smarter podcast, Ian Silverii. And finally, our Rocky Mountain Highs and Lows of the Week. Joshua mentioned Comedy Works and Spirit Airlines. Ian talked about Lauren Boebert, the Boulder mayor's race, the school board drama in Woodland Park, and his interview with the reporter behind that Woodland Park story. First, a report of a so-called “homeless bar” with “prostitution tents” at 23rd and Champa Street had the national tabloids looking Denver's way. But what was really going on there anyway? Then, overdose deaths are making headlines again in Colorado, this time because more and more of these incidents are happening in public, forcing passersby into the role of makeshift first-responders. Plus, listeners share their comments on a recent guest on our show and debate how CO's vaping congresswoman's anti-trans rhetoric can have real-life consequences.  Bree mentioned CBS Colorado's coverage of Aurora mayor Mike Coffman's foray into cosplaying the experience of being homelessness.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. Kate Barton is the Senior Vice President, Executive Office and Special Projects for the Downtown Denver Partnership, a fast-moving, forward thinking, non-profit business organization with the foundational belief that every day is our chance to make the city a little better. But tough times indeed for Republicans in Blue State Colorado. We offer our Preliminary GOP Autopsy for Colorado 2018. Mild-mannered, Bush-like campaigns in the Trump Era. It must be said: The low energy, low purpose, low connection CO GOP simply could not have done worse, even if they tried. But will they learn the right lessons from this debacle? We criticize state leaders for continually distancing themselves from President Trump and the motivating MAGA agenda. Nationally, we observe the Republicans who did well tended to seek the "warm embrace" from Trump. Rough justice arrives for the defeated Rep. Mike Coffman, who fell short in his effort to represent a district reflective of the kind of America he has helped create. Coffman earned a dismissive comment from Trump: "Too bad Mike!"
