The Unauthorized History of the Pacific War

This week we are feeding you guys another wartime documentary. This one is called The Fighting Lady. A so-called "news drama" of the day, the Fighting Lady focuses on the exploits of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) from her commissioning through many of the Navy battles and campaigns of the Pacific war from 1943-late 1944 including the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. Narrated by Hollywood star Robert Taylor, who himself was a Naval Aviator, the film is a time capsule view into life aboard and Essex class carrier at war in the Pacific. #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #battleships #ussenterprise #aircraftcarriers #museum #essex #halsey #taskforce38 #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #battleships #ussenterprise #aircraftcarriers #museum #hollywood #movie #movies #books #mastersoftheair #8thairforce #mightyeighth #100thbombgroup #bloodyhundredth #b17 #boeing #airforce wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #battleships #ussenterprise #aircraftcarriers #museum #hollywood #movie #movies #books #oldbreed #1stMarineDivision #thepacific #Peleliu #army #marines #marinecorps #worldwar2 #worldwar #worldwarii #leytegulf #battleofleytegulf #rodserling #twilightzone #liberation #blacksheep #power #prisoner #prisonerofwar #typhoon #hurricane #weather #iwojima#bullhalsey #ace #p47 #p38 #fighter #fighterpilot #b29 #strategicstudying #tokyo #boeing #incendiary #usa #franklin #okinawa #yamato #kamikaze #Q&A #questions #questionsandanswers #history #jaws #atomicbomb #nuclear

Those excepted to the program will require rigorous and extensive training that will take years. As is the case in just about everything, upward mobility depends on upper level skills and the ability to perform to exacting standards that can only be mastered by a commitment to consistent study and the gaining of knowledge. Tom Cruise now shares something in common with the Top Gun character he portrayed in the movies. This action hero received the highest Navy honor bestowed upon a civilian. Because of the positive effect he has had on the public image of the US Navy and Marine Corps, “Maverick” is now officially authorized to wear the Wings of Gold of a Naval Aviator. In many parts of the world there is a projected decline in population that will have negative long term effects unless there is some form of intervention. Such stop-gap measures are in the works to help incentivize younger people to begin families and replace those needed to preserve society. It is necessary for all of us to be as physically fit as possible. If your exercise routine gets boring, try something new. In addition to mental stimulation, varying your training can yield improvements to one's overall condition by muscle confusion. Exercising different parts of the body helps mentally and physically. Meet an unusual wingman who is generous with his time and kindness to and ailing friend who appreciates him for more than his celebrity.

A former Naval Aviator tells us about his life after Naval aviation, the content he's produced, and the pivot he's making. In the news, the optics of flying in a corporate aircraft, the Boeing Starliner is back to earth with a few problems, a new Navy policy for aviator sea tours, and noise complaints at Australian airports. Guest Rob Roy is a former Naval Aviator who produces a YouTube channel with over 100k subscribers. He's also the founder of the weekly Flybuyer newsletter with curated aviation news that focuses on general and business aviation. It targets people who fly airplanes, potential owners, and enthusiasts. Rob's YouTube channel currently includes videos of carrier landings and catapult launches made during his 2015-2016 deployment. We hear about some of Rob's Naval aviation experiences flying the C-2 Greyhound cargo plane and training for carrier landings. Not this Rob Roy… The big news is the pivot Rob has taken with his life after naval aviation. He's shifting his focus to making airplane walk-around videos full-time that will appear on his YouTube channel. Rob intends to create a large body of review videos for people who want to buy airplanes. If you'd like to have your airplane filmed by Rob, he's created an Airplane Filming Form form where you can express your interest. And be sure to sign up for the Flybuyer newsletter and visit Rob's YouTube channel. Here's the video Rob mentioned when talking about the arresting cable that snapped during an E-2C Hawkeye's landing in March 2016 aboard the USS Eisenhower: Video: Cable snaps on USS Eisenhower during landing https://youtu.be/r-EHwYOfY94?si=zO93Cjtq13exFr2X Aviation News Managing the Optics of Flying in a Corporate Aircraft Corporate executives, athletes, pop stars, and celebrities often travel by corporate or private aircraft. This sometimes brings them public scrutiny due to the perceived environmental impact of their wealth or fame. The optics can generate unwanted attention. This article looks at why private/corporate might be used, the financial case, and using executive time productively. A study says executives are productive for about 80 percent of travel time while using business aviation and 30 percent while flying commercial. It's a good thing NASA sent the Boeing Starliner back to Earth empty because it had even more problems The Boeing Starliner experienced problems on its crewed flight to the Space Station and returned to Earth without the astronauts. The capsule did stick the landing, but other problems surfaced. An additional thruster failed (5 of 28 had failed when Starliner docked) and the Starliner guidance system temporarily blacked out. The thruster failures were attributed to Teflon seals swelling under heat and blocking propellant flow. The helium leaks compounded the situation. A software glitch caused the temporary blackout of the Starliner guidance system during reentry. Boeing's space and defense chief exits in new CEO's first executive move New CEO Kelly Ortberg has removed Boeing's head of its space and defense unit, effective immediately. Steve Parker, the unit's chief operating officer, will assume the position until a replacement is named. Starliner has cost Boeing $1.6 billion in overruns since 2016, according to a Reuters analysis of securities filings. Navy will force aviators to remain in service to complete sea tours The US Navy wants to increase aviation community retention and will require naval aviators to serve a pair of two-year sea tours. The new policy applies to officers serving on their first shore tour with a projected rotation date of October 2025 and beyond. It is reported that about 25% of unrestricted line aviators want to leave the Navy after their minimum service requirement. Some even request to leave the Navy when their second two-year sea tour is underway. A Naval Air Forces spokesperson says the new policy will extend most officer's servi...

A former naval aviator, he served as commanding officer of a fighter squadron based in Japan, A TOPGUN instructor, and a combat pilot over the skies of Iraq.  Today he is the founder and CEO of Defense Analytics, a strategic consulting and advisory firm. He is the author of Holding the Line: Inside Trump's Pentagon with Secretary Mattis and his latest book is titled: TOPGUN's Top 10: Leadership Lessons from the Cockpit.    Some interesting insights from this episode: ·         To succeed a TOPGUN, you have to possess three traits: talent, passion, and personality. ·         Competence is when you have an excellent capability but you operate below that level. Arrogance is when your competence is lower than you anticipate but you act like you're better. ·         You can achieve anything you put your mind to so long as you're willing to break down the problem and put the resources against it to solve it. ·         After every simulated dogfight there would be a debrief comparing your recollection of the events with the actual video footage.  This created a continual feedback loop to accelerate learning. ·         President Eisenhower once said: “Plans are worthless but planning is indispensable.” ·         TOPGUN has a flat organizational structure whereby junior officers are calling a lot of the shots.  Decisions are made based on capability and knowledge base, not based on rank. This allows them to get to the best tactical end result.    Show Notes: TOPGUN'S TOP 10: Leadership Lessons from the Cockpit Holding the Line: Inside Trump's Pentagon with Secretary Mattis

Tammie Jo also discusses the events of April 17, 2018, when the plane she was flying suffered severe damage and how her faith, experience, and training allowed her to manage the events and be emotionally present for the passengers and crew in the immediate aftermath.  “Hope changes people: when you have a plan and a destination you need to communicate it” - Tammie Jo Shults This week on The Wow Factor: The trajectory changing decision Tammie Jo's parents made to help her thrive at school The advice from her mother that helped her fit in at Bootcamp What it's like to land an airplane on an aircraft carrier and how her decision loop works Why she left the Navy and joined Southwest Airlines The power of the generosity ripple The importance of open lines of communication Why calm was a gift in the cockpit of Flight 1380 What a sense of community does during a stressful incident and the parallels with the parable of the Good Samaritan Why Tammie Jo felt moved to connect with passengers after the plane landed Tammie Jo Shults' Words of Wisdom: The good habits, hope, and heroes that influence us every day become instincts, and it is essential to understand as a leader that how you behave in turn, influences and affects other people.  Connect with Tammie Jo Shults: Captain Shults' Website  Facebook Captain Shults Instagram Captain Shults Twitter Captain Shults Connect with The WOW Factor: The WOW Factor Website Connect with Brad Formsma via email Brad Formsma on LinkedIn Brad Formsma on Instagram Brad Formsma on Facebook Brad Formsma on Twitter

As a former Navy aviator and aerospace engineer, Ali prided himself on navigating difficult situations. However, nothing could have prepared him for the challenges of caring for his ill mother-in-law while balancing work and family responsibilities. Ali and his wife decided to bring her into their home without hesitation. Still, they soon found themselves overwhelmed trying to manage her complex medical needs and navigate the healthcare system alone. At his wit's end, Ali was introduced to the TCARE protocol. Developed by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, TCARE helped Ali and his family better understand the emotional toll of caregiving through clinical assessments. To Ali's surprise, the recommended care plan focused on marriage counseling rather than just medical support. This unexpected recommendation opened Ali's eyes to how caregiving impacted every aspect of his life. Through TCARE, Ali also discovered local resources he didn't know existed, like free family counseling. Inspired by the difference TCARE made, Ali developed the program into the caregiver support platform it is today. Now, Ali dedicates his career to helping other caregivers avoid burnout through TCARE's individualized support plans and focus on preventing emotional hardships. Driven by his caregiving experiences and commitment to family, Ali continues working tirelessly to validate caregivers' challenges and connect them with the resources needed to care for their loved ones without sacrificing their well-being.About Ali:Ali Ahmadi is a veteran of three venture-backed tech startups, having raised over $100 million in funding.
