Mike Noonan doesn't sugarcoat where he thinks college athletics is headed. "Buckle up and hold on tight, because we're going to go through a hurricane," he said. Noonan, who has led Clemson to two national titles in men's soccer, is privy to major changes taking shape in the college game. "We've made about five different attempts to become a two-semester sport, and modernize the sport, but we have hit roadblocks in the NCAA bureaucracy every time," he said. "So with all the changes going on with college athletics, and there's been a number of changes in the governing body at U.S. Soccer ... we re-engaged in conversations with them. "There was a pilot program put forward, similar to the College Football Playoff. We're not leaving the NCAA, but we would play over two semesters and there'd be a national tournament sponsored by U.S. Soccer at the end of the spring portion of our season. The national governing body would pay for the championship, and we would be able to progress our game in a way that we haven't been able to."  Noonan said athletics directors have been in "great discussions" with U.S. Soccer about adopting the pilot program for the 2026-27 year. He said there are different championship models that feature 36 teams, 48 teams and even 72 teams. "We all feel favorable that it's going to happen. It will be a big change." Noonan also shares how, a few years into his Clemson tenure, he significantly changed his recruiting model. "When we got here we were in a position where we had to just look for talent. And talent without character is a recipe for disaster." Noonan consulted a familiar name as he constructed his new model: One Dabo Swinney. Swinney's advice to Noonan: It's not what works everywhere; it's what works at Clemson. "That flipped a switch for me," Noonan said. "We came up with 10 recruiting criteria and decided we were going to recruit to them. And any player that we were going to let come into our program was going to have to tick seven of those criteria."

Mike Noonan, fresh off Clemson's second men's soccer national title in three years, joins The Dubcast to reflect on the journey. In August of 2022, Noonan lost his father. And then this past November his mother passed away as Noonan and the Tigers were pursuing Clemson's fourth men's soccer national title in its history. Noonan opens up about his upbringing, including his father's remarkable life that included: Graduating from MIT and the Harvard Business School; Working on the Apollo Space Project; Modernizing Taiwan's rail system; Playing a role in the merger of the AFL and NFL. In addition, Mike's younger brother Mark is the commissioner of the Canadian Premier League. Noonan reminisces about first hearing from Clemson when he was the head coach at Brown. He and his wife Deb fell in love with the campus and surrounding community on their first visit. Noonan, who has believed in Dabo Swinney from the beginning, had a rough patch with the football coach when the building of the Tigers' opulent operations facility meant the displacement of Noonan's practice fields. Swinney assured Noonan he and the soccer program would be much better off in the end, and when it came time to raise money for the new soccer facility Swinney lived up to his word. "He was right," Noonan said. Noonan also delves into his love of music, and spending time in the mid- to late-1980s watching Phish once a month in a club called Nectar's in Burlington, VT. Noonan's wife spent college in the same dorm as Phish's members, one floor below. Clemson will hold a parade Saturday at 11:30 AM to celebrate the soccer team's national title.

Mike Noonan, fresh off bringing Clemson its first men's soccer championship since 1987, joins the podcast to talk what it means and how his life is different. Noonan also retraces the fateful steps that led his choosing Clemson after a 15-year career leading Brown University. Syracuse had also offered him its coaching job, and he ended up choosing the Tigers because of the warmth he and his family felt during their trip down for the interview. Within Noonan's first year on the job at Clemson in 2010, he was appalled at the heat on a second-year football coach named Dabo Swinney amid a losing season. From what he had observed of Swinney during that short time, Noonan believed Swinney had the makings of a great coach. Years later, Noonan was not happy when his practice fields were displaced by construction on Clemson's new football facility -- construction that began when the soccer team was in the NCAA playoffs. He remembers Swinney promising him that he'd help him get a much better soccer facility, and that promise was later fulfilled.

King Me: The Stephen King Movie Podcast, Officially

We've heard of a lot of things, but the 2011 A&E miniseries BAG OF BONES? That we had not heard of! BAG OF BONES stars Pierce Brosnan as Mike Noonan, a novelist who's very busy mourning the death of his wife and becoming the legal guardian of a child he met earlier today. Over the course of the movie, and with the help of his dead wife's spirit, Mike learns important lessons about jazz and desecrating corpses. BAG OF BONES is lousy with King Tropes, and it takes on some very sensitive topics with a degree of nuance usually reserved for Pierce Brosnan's acting. To make matters worse, it's a Mick Garris joint, so it also serves as a cruel reminder of the time Dan pulled his hair. Want more King Me content, you sicko?
