How I Got Hired
96. Enrique Camacho: Army Colonel to Uber Driver to Founder!

How I Got Hired

My guest today is a US Army Colonel turned Uber driver. True Story! I'm going to take an excerpt from a LinkedIn post of his that blew up in May 2022 and got 60,000 likes and thousands of comments and shares:“I was kind of a big deal, at least I thought. I worked for some of the most recognized names in defense, served at a few national agencies. Then I started Model Citizen Coffee Company and realized - I need more money! So, between writing business plans and developing product lines, I drove an Uber and managed a 4.9999999 star rating - thank you Mr. 3 Star, blew-up my 5-star rating.  Here's what I learned in the experience. Nobody cared that I was "Kind of a Big Deal”. I asked my Uber riders lots of questions, and empathized with: Funny thing is, only 3 out of 453 passengers I delivered ever asked about my story. Perhaps the 450 thought Enrique Camacho, was a middle aged immigrant supporting his family the best way he could, with a limited skill set and future.  Truth bomb hit me. We're only as good as our last race. People don't really care what we've done. They're interested in what we can do for them today and tomorrow. It's not a bad thing, it's a realization that we must continuously learn and grow, so we don't stagnate. This conversation is a brilliant lesson in checking ego, taking baby steps, facing the fear and doing it anyway.Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!Follow Enrique and Model Citizen Coffee on Social Media:https://www.linkedin.com/in/enrique-n-camacho/https://www.instagram.com/modelcitizencoffee/https://www.facebook.com/ModelCitizenCoffeehttps://modelcitizencoffee.com/ -------------------------------------------------Liked this episode? Pat Scannon is one among the few who have earned a Ph.D. and then, separately, an M.D. His passion for both chemistry and medicine goes back to his childhood roots. His father was a US Army Colonel and his Romanian-born mother went to medical school in Leipzig during World War II. Pat spent memorable years growing up in post-war Europe. Years later, he earned his BS in Chemistry from the University of Georgia. He was in R.O.T.C and received a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army upon graduation. Then he earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. A few months before his graduation, Pat realized the potential of using his chemistry training in medicine during an era pre-biotech and decided to apply to medical school. He returned to his home state and spent the second half of the 1970's earning his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Pat is a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine. He completed his residency and fulfilled his military duty as a major at the Letterman Army Medical Center and the Letterman Army Institute of Research on the Presidio of San Francisco. Pat founded Project Recover, formerly BentProp, after a trip to Palau in 1993. He and his wife, Susan, a dive instructor, were invited there to help locate the Japanese trawler George H.W. Bush sunk in 1944. They found the trawler more quickly than expected and documented it had been an armed vessel. After the rest of the dive team left, Pat hired a guide to show them other artifacts from World War II. It was then that Pat first saw the 65-foot wing of an American B-24 bomber lying in shallow water along a coral island in Palau. Other than leading him to it, the guide could give Pat no information about the wing. For Pat, the wing was more than a hunk of metal. It represented a forgotten battle and brave men who had fought and died there. It represented stories lost to the chaos of war, the annals of time, and the secret stillness of a watery grave. All were stories unknown to the airmen's families. This moment marks the inception of The BentProp Project which is now known as Project Recover. Project Recover is a collaborative effort to enlist 21st-century science and technology in a quest to find and repatriate Americans missing in action since World War II, in order to provide recognition and closure for families and the Nation.

Vincent Castillo, a US army veteran and expert in logistics believes Russia did not plan a sustainable invasion and Justin Bronk, a Senior Research Fellow at RUSI says it's unlikely Russia would use chemical or nuclear weapons but we must keep an open mind.

Larry Wilkerson, former US Army Colonel and high-ranking member of Bush's White House as Colin Powell's chief of staff, has spent his post-government career criticizing our war-mongering policies. Wilkerson discusses the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the US response from an inside-the-government perspective: He's worked with Biden and understands his motives. He knows the US oligarchs whose wallets will be hurt if Russian oligarchs are hit. He's been through the army and Washington and understands why the current strategy isn't designed to help anyone but the US. So we think he's a good person to listen to. We also think that may be why the FBI is suddenly following him around. And, it seems that Wilkerson's advice on drone strike information doubles as a pretty good characterization of some of the politicians in power today: “Your intelligence is never as good as you think it is.” Plus, Dems are ripping up the shelters of the unhoused while Republicans are having cocaine orgies. In this episode of The Black Spy Podcast, Carlton King once again speaks to African American female, retired US Army Colonel, Edna W. Cummings. In honour of US Black History Month Listeners learn more of Colonel Edna Cummings' nigh on single handed endeavour to get a Congressional Gold Medal, awarded to the segregated 6888th battalion of black female soldiers that saw active duty in Europe, during in WW2. Unfortunately, due to the racist politics of the day, the actions of 6888th were never fully recognised. So, Colonel Cumming wishes to belatedly rectify this, taking the battle for recognition to the US Senate and the House of Representatives. In addition to discussing the 6888th, The Black Spy and Colonel Cummings analyse the concept of 'Race' and who decides who is a member of the so called 'Black' race. Racism and Blackness through history are discussed and whether there is always time based progression in terms of civil rights and gender bias. As Colonel Cummings puts it, "It's a history that has too long been hidden". This episode is truly another fantastic Black Spy Podcast interview from which we can all learn. In this episode of The Black Spy Podcast, Carlton King explores the life and times of African American female, retired US Army Colonel, E. W. Cummings.    Listeners learn that from her earliest memories Colonel Cummings was imbibed into the covenant of official secrets.    Colonel Cummings' father, an elite soldier (82nd Airborne), undertook three tours of Vietnam; returning from his last, "more dead than alive".    So years later after gaining a degree from University, it was no surprise when Colonel Cummings followed in her heroic father's foot steps and joined the US military as an Army officer. After all, she believed that the desegregated US military would offer a black person the best chance of progression in the racially charged America of the 60's and 70's.    However, once in the military Colonel Cummings found that it was her gender that appeared to place the greatest barriers to her achieving a successful career.    Nevertheless, she explains how some well placed white male officers helped unlock her latent potential, allowing her to grow into an excellent officer and leader.    We also learn that Colonel Cummings undertook an array of sensitive deployments both in the military and after her retirement, fostering and leading emergency homeland security  liaison, between the military, the FBI and various other Federal Agencies.    Finally, in this amazing interview, we learn of Colonel Cummings' nigh on single handed endeavour to get a congressional gold medal, awarded to the segregated 6888 unit of black female soldiers that saw active duty in Europe, during in WW2. Unfortunately, due to the racist politics of the day, the actions of 6888 were never recognised. SW051 War as Indian Removal by 'Other Means': Applying Classic Prussian Military Strategist's Insights, Maxims to Second Seminole Conflict

Seminole Wars

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2021 42:14

The US Government passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and that political decision led to U.S. military demands that the Seminole relocate to Oklahoma. The US Government accepted that it might require waging war to enforce the removal. The great Prussian military strategist Carl Von Clausewitz anticipated this contingency: "War is the continuation of politics by other means."Clausewitz warned, though, "No one starts a war -- or rather, no one in his sense ought to do so -- without first being clear in his mind what he intends to achieve by the war and how he intends to conduct." The Seminole were clear on their political objectives in opening fire on Major Dade's command to begin formal hostilities with the U.S. government: Wage war until the Army agreed to stop forced removal to Oklahoma. They would fight on the run if they had to, with hit-and-run tactics and nuisance attacks. But they would still fight.  In response, the U.S. Army embarked on a punitive operation against the Florida Seminole to achieve its own political objectives by warlike means. It seemed a simple enough proposition. Engage the Seminole in a big battle. Defeat them. Remove them. Restore peace. No one in America had read how Clausewitz would have scoffed at this simple proposition. In war, he wrote, everything is simple. But the simplest things are very, very difficult to perform Removing the Seminole was only simple on paper. More than seven years later, the U.S. Army had not completed its simple mission to capture all the Seminole and deport them. It eventually gave up on 100% removal, packed up, and went home. Joining us is US Army Colonel and War College graduate JP Clark, a military historian and a military strategist. He explains how an understanding of Clausewitz could have informed officers in the Second Seminole War -- and does inform us today. Without a copy of On War in its collective haversacks to inform and guide its strategy, operations, and tactics, the Army muddled along in the Second Seminole War. Much blood and treasure might have been spared had the Army's senior officers known of and embraced Clausewitz' strategic insights.    Who was Carl von Clausewitz? Clausewitz' insights continue to resonate two centuries after he penned them. His relevance to thinking about strategy remains undiminshed by time.    Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a combat veteran and of the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Kosovo, and at the Pentagon after 9/11. How do you apply the lean startup methodology to the military? Well, that's the subject of this week's episode of Agile Giants. Pete Newell, whose name may sound familiar because Steve Blank mentioned him at the Corporate Entrepreneurship Forum as the co-author of his upcoming book, Innovation Doctrine. Pete is the CEO of BMNT Inc., a Silicon Valley based innovation consultancy and early stage tech accelerator. He's a retired US Army colonel and the former director of the US Army Rapid Equipping Force. You'll hear on this week's episode a little bit about what Pete's been doing both with BMNT and in the classroom with Steve Blank. And again, just like we did on Steve's episode, teasing this book coming out that I know so many of you are excited about, Innovation Doctrine.

Content Sells: Attract, Convert & Keep Your Ideal Clients with Content Marketing That Works

Today we want to focus on one very specific idea… it’s really more of a mindset that we’ve been talking about a lot lately with our Masterminders, clients and members and we wanted to share it on the show… And that is this idea of slowing down so you can actually go faster. It can sound counterintuitive, “But wait, I want to get to 6-figures this year in my business!” Or “I’ve got a webinar in 4 days!” Or “My clients are screaming at me right now because my website went down. You want me to what???” “You want me to go slow to go fast?” And our answer is, in a lot of cases, YES. Even in what appears to be urgent chaos. In this episode, your hosts Suzi Dafnis and Michelle Falzon look at the benefits of the “Tactical Pause.” Listen to this episode to hear more about: The lesson to be learned from US Airport Security staff who need speed, but ask for slow. What a retired US Army Colonel can teach content marketers about pausing before creating The 3 parts to a Tactical Pause Why pausing to refresh could be the single most important thing you do in your busy day today How going slow to go fast relates to a “Campaign Mindset” that can save you from “knee jerk” marketing Why sometimes feeling like you are “going fast” is an illusion And much more. Also mentioned in this episode: HerBusiness Success Mastermind Going Slow To Go Fast - How To Conduct a Tactical Pause - By Colonel (USA, retired) John Vermeesch, MS Amy Geach - Maida Learning

A US Army Colonel has stated that the Coronavirus was created in a Communist Chinese lab and leaked. Lawrence Sellin Ph.D. retired from the Army as a colonel after 29 years of service in the U.S. Army Reserve. Sellin worked previously at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. Colonel Sellin: “Time and additional evidence will show that coronavirus ‘leaked’ from a Chinese laboratory.” Th Express in the UK is reporting, "RUSSIAN military scientists have made unverified claims they discovered that the coronavirus is "aggressively mutating" into a form of pneumonic plague that was capable of killing those contracting it within hours - but this has been rejected by Public Health England."
