We are back with another set of creator interviews. First, we speak Kevin Garcia and Emmanuel Valtierra about their ongoing Kickstarter campaign for "Teoatl". You can follow the Kickstarter page by following the link: http://kck.st/2ZzaU5r. "The story of "Teoatl" is the story of Mexico. The people popularly known as Aztecs called themselves Mexica, and while the story of their fall has been told and retold at least 400 times, the story of their rise - the founding of the great city of Tenochtitlan - is one more people need to know. Schoolchildren might learn about the Aztecs leaving on a journey guided by the war god Huichtilopochtli, ending when they find an eagle holding a snake on a cactus growing from a stone - but a lot happened in leading up to that iconic moment. And that's the story we're going to tell." You can learn more about Kevin Garica at www.kevingarcia.com or www.monomythic.com. You can check out Emmanuel Valtierra's work at www.emmanuelvaltierraillustrator.com or follow him on Instagram. We also have an interview with Miles Greb, creator of "After the Goldrush". "After the Gold Rush is a return to optimistic Science-Fiction. It follows Scout, the last scientist, as she returns to Earth to find it in a state of wilderness. She lands on her ancestral home of Earth and instead of the Star Trek-like utopia she was expecting...she encounters a lush and natural Earth. But in this new frontier, it appears Science has been traded away." You can keep up with Miles by heading over to https://www.afterthegoldrush.space/ or following him on Twitter & Instagram. We talk about the Dune trailer, what the movie means for the franchise, and a little bit of 'what they got wrong/right'. Interestingly the trailer used 'crusade' in a scene where he should have said 'ghost wind of jihad' and we're curious if the movie makers know the true story of Dune. We also talk a bit about the books Miles has created and you should check them all out: https://www.afterthegoldrush.space/ Also, if you don't know what a 'Dune' is: https://youtu.be/n9xhJrPXop4 Keep your eyes peeled, Miles has a kickstarter going live on October 1st that collects the first volume of After the Gold Rush, and it's something that you need to have. On this episode, Cal and Nathan speak with special guest Miles Greb, a Seattle-based comic writer, folk singer, and advocate for science, skepticism, and atheism. He has authored science-and-skepticism-based comics in the optimistic sci-fi tradition, including “After the Gold Rush,” a series of comics chronicling the adventures of a distant future in which a 16 year-old biologist who grew up on Saturn’s moon Titan returns to a sparsely-populated Earth to find she is the last scientist. We talk to Miles about the value of comics as a storytelling medium, the importance of optimistic sci-fi in a landscape dominated by pessimistic dystopian stories, why science and the humanities should cross paths, and his experiences advocating for science outreach and education through campaigns like the March for Science.
