This week we stagger in the gathering to discuss Common's classic 1994 release Resurrection. This is an important record for DBRP hosts David Ma, Demone Carter, and Nate LeBlanc, who collectively cannot believe this album is 30 years old. We discuss the incredible synergy between rapper Common Sense (as he was then known), producer NO I.D. and scratchmaster Mista Sinista, as well as the relative merits of Common's father's outro contributions, some of the samples used, and so much more. Common was on the rebound from the reception to his debut album Can I Borrow A Dollar when he was creating Resurrection, so we spend a bit of time discussing the reception to that misfire and how he came back hard with this album, which all of us view as an unimpeachable classic. Time has been pretty kind to almost all of this record, with the possible exception of its best known track, the narrative masterwork "I Used To Love H.E.R." We also get into Com's beef with Ice Cube, which is interesting to look back on given the current state of blockbuster rap rivalries at the moment. As you will probably notice, we recorded this episode from the Harmony Hotel in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City in the beautiful country of Vietnam. We will be rolling out a miniseries documenting more of our travels and experiences there soon, be on the lookout for that. Mista Sinista, AKA Joel Wright, is known for his technical tricks during his mixes and has collaborated with artists including Common. Welcome back to the 200th episode of Eggs! To celebrate this milestone, we are thrilled to have our special guest, the revolutionary DJ Rob Swift. Born and raised in what would become the epicenter of hip-hop, Jackson Heights, Queens, Rob started his DJing at the young age of 12, influenced by his brother and father, DJs themselves. His education continued on the streets of 1980s New York City where he was exposed to all kinds of music from funk and jazz to old DJs like Grandmaster Flash and Grand Wizard Theodore. In 1991, Rob’s career kicked into overdrive when he joined the groundbreaking turntablist crew, the X-men, AKA the X-Ecutioners along with fellow legendary DJs Roc Raida, Total Eclipse, and Mista Sinista. He also won the DMC east coast title that year. In addition to working with everyone from Linkin Park to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rob appeared as the resident DJ on ESPNU and has achieved an unheard-of level of mainstream success. Today, he is still producing music, including his latest drop, For heads that break, with Shawneci Icecold in 2021, in addition to his popular blog, and education programs which are teaching the next generation of DJs how to master the trade. Super long episode this week! Neil Armstrong is a dj and member of the renowned 5th Platoon turntablism crew. He is also a producer, a global ambassador for Adidas, an event organizer, a former tour DJ for Jay-Z, and most recently a newish resident of Tokyo. We caught up with Neil to talk about growing up in NY, getting his name from Fat Beats, being taught the art of turntablism by Mista Sinista and Total Eclipse of the X-men, battling in the highly competitive turntablist scene of the 90s and early 00's, touring with Jay-Z, his Filipino roots and his thoughts on the current state of turntablism. This episode is very long. We actually recorded about 5 hours with Neil and decided to cut out the finer details of his time spent touring with Jay. well release that sometime soon. It has been said in the music industry that “it’s not what you know, but who you know, that makes one successful.” Taylor “Cas Metah” Hogle may argue that who you know, has a great impact on what you know. A quick listen to the Ohio native’s music reveals his understanding that life is about relationships. A glance at his discography reveals just how well he understands it, and how well he puts it into practice. Cas Metah is a friend to all true hip-hop heads, and he thinks it’s about time you get acquainted. Taylor Hogle fell in love with hip-hop as a teenager. Never one to shy away from commitment, Cas wrote raps for two years before ever touching a microphone! In 1997 he began recording homemade mixtapes and gaining a rep locally. Alongside 2-Tone, Ruffian, Shaw Bihland several other hungry talents, Cas formed Field Specialists. Metah quickly became the crews leader/in- house engineer, nicknaming his home studio the “Guest Room” due to the frequency of company and all night sessions. In 2002 Cas pressed up Key Tah Life, his first album of all original material. A chance meeting with JustMe in ‘03, led to a great friendship and the formation of Scribbling Idiots. Over the years the collective has discovered amazing talent worldwide and currently boasts the following “family” members: JustMe, Cas Metah, Theory Hazit, Elias, ReFlex the Architect, MP Ancient, Wonder Brown, Mouf Warren, MattmaN and Jaq.  From landing opening gigs with Joell Ortiz, Twista, The Pharcydeand Bizzy Bone just to name a few, to hitting up tour dates with vets like CunninLynguists, J-Live and Aceyalone, the list goes on and on as Cas continues to create a large buzz in hip-hop circles on and off stage. Due in large part to Cas’ tireless work in the studio, he has released numerous albums, EP’s and/or single songs on his own, as well as with several established record labels, including: Plattertude Recordings (U.K.), Illect Recordings, End Of Earth Records, Dunsin’ Donuts (Japan), Soulspazm, and BBM (Baka Boyz Media)/Empire Distribution. When it comes to collaborating with some of the best known (and unknown) artists in the game, Cas has worked with nearly everybody! Here’s just a highlight reel: Masta Ace, Kno, Witchdoctor, T-mo Goodie, 4th Disciple, LMNO, Deacon The Villain, Mars ILL, Copywrite, J. Rawls, Hell Razah, Shabazz The Disciple, Mista Sinista, Audible Doctor, Blueprint, J57, Craig G, D.V. Alias Khryst, Casual, Wordsworth, Yukmouth, Ras Kass, Ahmad & Ski Beatz! Wow! Perhaps more impressive than any of the credits listed above, is the countless guest appearances, cameos, and side-projects Cas has piled up throughout the past two decades. Prolific doesn’t begin to explain this young man’s writing ability. Nor does it explain his magnetic personality and networking skills.
