Up to this point, I would guess that most anyone interested in listening to this podcast has thus far been aware of all the artists I've covered, but Rhyme might be the first exception. For the entirety of my career in the music business, from my days running a home studio(Rage Cage Studios) in the late 80s to the early 90s, to my various other adventures, I've always sought to be an artist advocate, especially for those who I feel are unheard. In 1995, Rhyme, from Chicago, was one of those artists to make an instant and long-lasting impression on me. This is the story of his “Warrior's Ink” Demo, as well as how his career developed from that moment, as well as how Daddy-O, from Stetsasonic, was involved.

As hip-hop found its rhythm in the late 80s and early 90s, artists had to grapple with the scars of violence the drug war was causing within the community, using music videos like “Self Destruction” to hold each other accountable, and trying not to unravel in the face of what was happening in the streets. This is also when hip-hop began to expand outside of New York, to Los Angeles, where California's own policies and structures were shaping the rise of gangsta rap. These movements culminated in the so-called “golden age” of hip-hop, a time of maturing and sophistication in the music.  But along with that maturity came uncertainty from national leaders, and a new wave of commercialization that threatened to unravel this political artform. On this episode of “Street Disciples,” Trymaine Lee hears from: Daddy-O from the hip-hop group Stetsasonic, rapper and producer The D.O.C., Video Music Box's Ralph McDaniels, radio host Bobbito Garcia, writer Nelson George, and journalist Davey D.Note: this episode contains several instances of profanity. Follow and share the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the handle @intoamericapod.Thoughts? •   Stetsasonic was an American hip hop group formed in 1981 in Brooklyn, New York. They are remembered as one of the first hip hop crews to use a live band, and their positive, uplifting lyrics have made the group forerunners of alternative hip hop and jazz rap. The members are Prince Paul, Wise, DBC (the Devastating Beat Creator), Daddy-O, Delite, Bobby Simmons, and Fruitkwan aka Frukwan.
Originally, the group was known as the Stetson Brothers, but they changed their name to Stetsasonic for their debut, On Fire, due to their preference of Stetson hats. The album received mixed reviews, though the follow-ups, In Full Gear and Blood, Sweat & No Tears were critically acclaimed.

There was a lot going on in 1999. Y2K was looming over us, we were all partying like Prince (the artist formally known as) told us to, all colors were quickly being replaced with chrome, and all the pop monsters like Britney Spears, Cristina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, etc, RULED the charts. But underneath the bubbly surface, a hip hop coming of age tale of epic proportions was being carefully crafted... by hip hop royalty, Prince Paul. If you're wondering why you can't remember a specific song by him, it's because he's not usually center stage. A prodigy from the New York hip hop scene getting attention as young as 14, Paul was in several groups in his teenage years, including the influential group Stetsasonic, before producing De La Soul's first three albums. Paul continued producing and grouping up over the years, with mixed results, including a three song collaboration with Boogie Down Productions (which included KRS-One), a team up with RZA and others called Gravediggaz, and demo for Horror City with Superstar and various other MCs, which although not a success, would end up providing material for "Prince Among Thieves." In 1996 he was ready to make something for himself, but apparently did not have a lot of success in getting people involved, opting to get people outside of the music industry to guest on his debut "Psychoanalysis: What Is It?" It's a very strange album that wasn't exactly a banger, but for the following album, he had more than enough success in getting people involved. Featuring some of the greatest names in hip hop of the time, including Big Sha, Kool Keith, Everlast, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Sadat X, Xzibit, RZA, and De La Soul (to name a few), with a Chris Rock cameo for good measure, "Prince Among Thieves" is a time capsule. It's a fully formed rap opera with compelling characters and a story of the streets as old as time... Up to this point, I would guess that most anyone interested in listening to this podcast has thus far been aware of all the artists I've covered, but Rhyme might be the first exception. For the entire of my career in the music business, from my days running a home studio(Rage Cage Studios) in the late 80s to the early 90s, to my various other adventures, I've always sought to be an artist advocate, especially for those who I feel are the unheard. In 1995, Rhyme, from Chicago, was one of those artists to make an instant and long lasting impression on me. This is the story of his “Warrior's Ink” Demo, as well as how his career developed from that moment, as well as how Daddy-O, from Stetsasonic was involved. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/storiesaboutsongs/support

PF & O.C. of D.I.T.C. dropped a new album this week called Opium - a searing 9 cut project that was born of out the ashes of a tragedy - the tragic passing of PF's best friend, the one and only Sean Price. PF breaks down the genesis of the project, his favorite sleeper cuts and what he has around the corner for us next. We also go back a few years to PF's production mentors such as Professor X, Daddy-O & Bobby Simmons of Stetsasonic, including an INSANE story on how Daddy-O snuck him into the Latin Quarters and he witnessed DJ Red Alert play “It's A Demo” 35 times in a row - let's just say the night didn't end well for folks that checked their coats.
