When talking about some of the best female rap albums, we at Bring The Noise Podcast believe Bahamadia's 1996 album Kollage belongs in that category. With production from DJ Premier, Guru and Da Beatminerz, Bahamadias smooth yet complex lyrics put this album in that classic category that does not get discussed enough. https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=ZT-8uY9R6uk4pq&_r=1 https://www.instagram.com/str8clippa?igsh=MXVpbmR3bmwweWNxOQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr https://www.facebook.com/share/1BVqnmk4tJ/?mibextid=wwXIfr

On episode 151, we're teleporting back to 1995. If you had a 5-disc CD changer in the whip, chances are you had Dah Shinin' in one of those slots. Tek and Steele announced their presence with authority on Enta da Stage in '93, then dropped the classic Bucktown b/w Let's Git It On single in early '94, which had everyone patiently waiting for their album. In January '95, the wait was over and Dah Shinin' immediately became a favorite. With their witty harmonizing 1-2 punch, along with the Da Beatminerz, Dah Shinin' was classic upon first listen and the birth of what we now know as the Boot Camp Clik. We're joined by General Steele, as we go track-by-track with him on Dah Shinin'. Learn all about your favorites, whether it's Timz 'n' Hood Chek, Sound Bwoy Bureill, Bucktown, Hellucination, Let's Git It On or Cession at da Doghillee. Steele shares intimate details about the making of every track, including the remixes and some non-album cuts. Steele also shares some hilarious and fascinating stories about recording @ D&D Records, Buckshot, Sean Price, working with Mary J. Blige and of course Tupac Shakur. If you're a Smif-N-Wessun fan or a Boot Camp fan, you're not going to want to miss this episode! Legendary production team Da Beatminerz are back with their first full length album in 20 years! The album is called “Stifled Creativity” and it features iconic artists such as De La Soul, KRS-One, Pharoahe Monch and Ras Kass alongside folks like Rasheed Chappell, Mickey Factz, Stahhr, and Bishop Lamont. We talked with Mr. Walt and DJ Evil Dee about their approach to making this album, some of the stories behind the collaborations, and how their history in the game has brought them this far. Then we discuss, in the kind of heated debate that can only exist between brothers, Public Enemy's “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back”. QLS gets in the weeds with Mr. Walt and Evil Dee of Da Beatminerz. This free-flowing discussion traces the origins of a very gritty sound and frequency of 1990s Rap production. The two brothers are not above clowing one another as they recall working on Black Moon's classic debut Enta Da Stage, going crate-digging with Q-Tip, and helping to make D&D Studios a true enclave of hardcre Hip Hop. True to Da Beatminerz' name and sound, this episode digs deep.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Many times we have had guests that we consider to be proverbial brothers, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time we have interviewed literal siblings. Of course we're referring to Brooklyn's finest, the production duo of DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt, collectively known as Da Beatminerz. This was a great conversation, as the hilarious, gregarious brothers have been involved in so many classic hip-hop moments and releases. We get deep on Soundbombing, Smif N Wessun, the division of labor among the crew, and much much more. DBRP hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc list their favorite Beatminerz beats (kind of a tough choice when there are so many great ones to choose from) and discuss various other hip-hop sibling groups and family bands. This podcast is only one of the fine programs available due to the largess of the Stony Island Audio network.
The production team known as Da Beatminerz came together in the late '90s to rejuvenate hip-hop with their purist aesthetics, which looked back to the genre's pioneering New York-based producers rather than the contemporary synthesizer-based sounds that were suddenly becoming the norm. Led by brothers DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt, they honed their beat-making skills individually before joining forces and crafting the collective's trademark "boom bap" sound: an emphasis on the bottom end, the bass lines, the hard kicks, and the snares. The collective's breakthrough came on their debut album for the prestigious Rawkus label in 2001, Brace 4 Impak, making them one of the few production-based acts in hip-hop to release an album under their own name.Fast Forwarding to 2024, they have a new album on the horizon, with a bunch of legendary MCs slated to join them...This week's episode is brought to you by Manscaped! B.Cox looks back at underground powerhouse label Rawkus Records and their first major compilation album Soundbombing, which turns 25. After releasing Company Flow's now legendary debut LP Funcrusher Plus earlier in the summer, the label released the compilation with previously released 12" singles in mixtape format. Mixed, scratched and hosted by DJ Evil Dee of Da Beatminerz and Black Moon, the album introduced us to future prominent emcees such as Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def),Talib Kweli and Shabaam Sahdeeq and producers such as Hi-Tek, Nick Wiz and Shawn J. Period. Sticking to their underground roots with he mixtape format, Rawkus sought to appeal to their underground base and wanted to capitalize on the success that Company Flow had with their debut that summer. While the album did not chart commercially, it made its buzz in the underground with DJs and fans. Several songs are considered underground classics and the release started a run of compilation releases including the beginning of the Lyricist Lounge series and the continuation of Soundbombing series. It also led to the formation of two groups that would have great success: Black Star (Def and Kweli) and Reflection Eternal (Kweli and Hi-Tek); all which helped Rawkus to achieve rare success both in the underground and limited success commercially.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesThe Hundreds: Counting Down Our 10 Favorite Rawkus Records Albumshttps://thehundreds.com/blogs/content/counting-10-favorite-rawkus-records-albumsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Whether you're an 80s baby or a 90s baby, this episode is for you. Whether you grew up on the Fat Boys or the Lost Boyz, this tribute is for you. D&D Studios is the most important studio in hip-hop history. Period. It's responsible for countless anthems such as Danger, Whutcha Want, Who Got Da Props, Ain't No Nigga, Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimas & Benz, Ante Up and DWYCK to name a few. It's responsible for many classic albums like Illmatic, Ready To Die, Enta Da Stage, Livin' Proof, The Sun Rises In the East and Return of the Boom-Bap. Whether it was produced by DJ Premier, Da Beatminerz, DJ Muggs or mixed by Eddie Sancho or Norty Cotto, the D&D stamp was official. Doug Grama and David Lotwin created hip-hop mecca. A place where stars were born and GOATs were made. Today, we celebrate D&D Studios and we're joined by 1-half of the D's, Mr. David Lotwin. We go behind the scenes, hear the stories, re-live the classics and play all your favorite D&D cuts. We also have special guests stopping by to share stories like DJ Premier, Russell Peters, Jeru The Damaja, Mark The 45 King and Craig-G. You'll hear what it was like when DJ Premier was in the studio creating classic after classic. You'll hear stories about Biggie and how Puffy went ballistic after finding a gun while recording there. You'll get to hear what it was like recording Enta Da Stage, Return of the Boom-Bap, Illmatic and other classics You'll hear about pre-fame Jay-Z being denied at the door because there were too many people inside the studio at the time. You'll hear about the late, great Big L, Sean P, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Guru. On episode 71, we celebrate hip-hop. We celebrate history. We celebrate D&D Studios. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

Remember the remix? Remember buying that cassette single because you needed that b-side featuring that new remix? Remember the remix that breathed new life into a track you had just starting grown tired of? Remember hearing the debut of a new rapper on a remix? Remember splurging and buying that maxi-single because it had not just 1 remix, but 2? And don't get me started on the unreleased b-side gems. That's a whole nother episode. The remix is a lost art today, but in the 90s it meant something. Some remixes had different vocals, and some different beats. Some remixes were just flat-out better than the originals. Some remixes started and even saved careers for many rappers and producers. Remember the first time you heard On The Run? What about the incredible Stress remix? Remember hearing Mos Def on the Stakes Is High Remix? Episode 65 is our first installment of our Remix series. Thanks to guys like Pete Rock, Marley Marl, DJ Premier, DJ Muggs, Salaam Remi, Large Pro, Da Beatminerz, Diamond D and Buckwild to name a few, the remix became a staple in 90s hip-hop. We got 68+ remixes on Episode 65 and we're just getting warmed-up, too! At the break, the gang discusses the beauty of the remix. Guest O.C D.I.T,C Member - Omar Credle (born May 13, 1971), better known by his stage name, O.C., is an American rapper and member of the group D.I.T.C., who has been involved with several renowned underground hip hop groups: Crooklyn Dodgers '95, Luv NY, Perestroika. Recording career.Omar was born in Brooklyn, May 13, 1971,[1] and raised in the Bushwick section. O.C. cites legends like Kool G. Rap, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane and Slick Rick as his main influences.[2] In 1991, he made his recording debut on Organized Konfusion's "Fudge Pudge",.[1] One year later he made an appearance on the remix of MC Serch's "Back to the Grill" (which also features a very young Nas) after meeting Serch on the inaugural Source tour. Following the tour, O.C. signed with Wild Pitch Records in 1994 where Serch was vice president.[2] O.C. also met Lord Finesse and Buckwild on the first Source tour, marking his introduction to the D.I.T.C crew. After the tour he connected with Buckwild and started recording a demo that would become his debut album Word...Life.[2]By 1994, he finished the album Word...Life, which included everything from his demo, along with "Time's Up," the song that would go on to be his most notable single. "Time's up" was initially a record for Pharoahe Monch from Organized Konfusion.[2] Beyond a quick outro from Prince Po, Word...Life does not have any guest appearances. This was not by design, however, as Nas was supposed to be on the album but never showed up to the studio for the recording session.[2] The album was critically acclaimed and remains beloved in hip-hop circles. In 1996, Credle appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation CD, America is Dying Slowly, alongside Biz Markie, Wu-Tang Clan, and Fat Joe, among many other prominent hip hop artists. The CD, meant to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic among African American men, was heralded as "a masterpiece" by The Source magazine. In 1997, O.C. signed to Pay Day Records,[1] where he released his second album Jewelz, featuring collaborations with DJ Premier, Da Beatminerz and Freddie Foxxx. The single "Far From Yours" peaked at #81 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it his highest charting single to date. By this time, he was a part of the underground hip hop act known as Diggin' in The Crates together with Lord Finesse, Fat Joe, Showbiz & A.G., Diamond D, Buckwild and Big L. In 2000 the crew released their self-titled debut album through Tommy Boy Records on which O.C. featured on the majority of the songs. In 1998, O.C. was featured on Pete Rock's "Respect Mine" from Pete Rock's 1998 solo debut album Soul Survivor. The 2001 release of Bon Appetit was met with very mixed reviews; the negative accused O.C. of selling out with a polished, shining and toned-down sound. This was although Buckwild produced the large bulk of the album with the only help coming from Lord Finesse and Ahmed (pretty much the same formula that made Word...Lifea success). After the disappointing release O.C. disappeared from the scene until 2005, when he released his fourth album with Grit Records; Starchild which only dropped as a very limited Japanese/European import and was met with great acclaim. Later that year, he signed with Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings and teamed up with Bronx-native producer Mike Loe, and dropped Smoke and Mirrors.O.C. is also known for his feature on the Clockers soundtrack as part of the Crooklyn Dodgers, which also featured rappers Chubb Rock and Jeru the Damaja on the now classic DJ Premier produced "Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers". This is however the only time the group has ever collaborated.O.C. collaborated with fellow D.I.T.C. member A.G. for an album entitled Oasis. The bulk of the album was produced by French beatsmith E-Blaze with additional tracks supplied by Lord Finesse, Statik Selektah and Showbiz who also acts as the executive producer of the album. May 2012 saw the release of a new collaborative album with Detroit-based producer Apollo Brown entitled Trophies on the Mello Music Group label. The first single was "Prove Me Wrong". The vinyl version of that album has also been repressed several times over. With Ray West in 2014 O.C. has curated a more laid back and purposefully smooth affair. Besides flowing freely from track-to-track with the help of atmospheric interludes, Ray's Cafe is noticeably and gratifyingly short at nine tracks long as well. Ray's Cafe was released on Red Apples 45, a small label co-founded by A.G. and West. O.C. joined D.I.T.C. for their 2016 release Sessions which was preceded by the lead single "Rock Shyt" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Craig G Craig Curry (born March 24, 1973),[1][2] better known by his stage name Craig G, is an American rapper from Queensbridge, New York. He is perhaps best known as one of the members of hip hop producer Marley Marl's Cold Chillin' Records group the Juice Crew.[3][4]He recorded the single "Shout Rap" with Marley Marl in 1985 at 12 years old and in 1988 recorded "The Symphony (song)" with the Juice Crew, described by Allmusic as "a landmark moment in the evolution of hardcore rap".[4] He was then signed by Atlantic Records who released two albums, in 1989 and 1991, with little promotion[4] After his experience with Atlantic his career went quiet for much of the 1990s although later in the decade he regained popularity with underground rap fans. He released another album in 2003 on the D&D label, This Is Now, featuring collaborations with Marley Marl, DJ Premier, and Da Beatminerz.[4][5]Craig G was a leading freestyle battle rapper, memorably battling Supernatural on several occasions,[6] and in the early 2000s wrote and coordinated the battle verses used by Eminem and his opponents in the film 8 Mile. The next year he wrote the character Dangerous' lyrics in 50 Cent's feature film Get Rich or Die Tryin'.[7]In 2008, he was part of a reunited Juice Crew, performing at the A3C Hip Hop Festival in Atlanta, Georgia.[8]In 2012 he released his fourth solo album Ramblings Of An Angry Old Man.[9][10] He was recording an as yet to be titled E.P. With Da Beatminerz [11] Craig G dropped his fifth LP titled I Rap & Go Home on June 3, 2016. He recently leaked music from the project online. Brooklyn, New York City. Home of fancy coffee shops, expensive condominiums, and trendy neighborhoods. But in 1995, Brooklyn was not synonymous for “gentrification.” Back then, Rudy Giuliani was Mayor of New York and he was in the midst of a serious war against crime. In 1995, Giuliani’s New York registered its lowest crime rate since the 1970s. From 1,156 homicides then to roughly 300 homicides now, the Big Apple has come a long way. In the heart of Brooklyn stood the “Doghilee,” stomping ground for the crew known as the Boot Camp Clik. BCC, which helped spearhead New York’s hardcore rap scene, was comprised of four unique groups: Black Moon, Smif N Wessun, Heltah Skeltah, and O.G.C. Emerging with Black Moon’s seminal debut album, Enta Da Stage, BCC cemented their status with Smif N Wessun’s debut, Dah Shinin. Released January 10, 1995, Dah Shinin is celebrated for the synergy between Smif N Wessun’s two members, Tek and Steele, and the cohesive, gritty production courtesy of Da Beatminerz. In 1998, The Source placed the album in its list of 100 Best Rap Albums. What You're about to hear is Tek and Steele take us through the backstory and the making of their quintessential classic. They talk about: - Their relationships with Biggie and Tupac - Going to high school with Maxwell and Sean Price - Being inspired by the work of Roy Ayers - And what the Doghilee actually was. This is "You Must Learn." "You Must Learn" was produced and edited by Peter Oasis, written by Dharmic X and executive produced by Evan Auerbach of @upnorthtrips. Special thanks to Dru Ha and Duck Down Records for the love. "You Must Learn" was recorded in your mothers basement next to your favorite blogger somewhere in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Please subscribe to "You Must Learn" on iTunes, Stitcher and wherever great podcasts can be found.
Back in the mid 90's Brooklyn was well represented in Hip Hop. At the top was none other than The Notorious BIG. But not everybody in BK was feelin Biggie's Versace and Dom P. rhymes. So the fans that were into that underground gritty army fatigue/timberland stomp you in the face Hip Hop gravitated towards The Boot Camp Clik. The crew which consisted of the groups Black Moon led by the legendary Buckshot, Originoo Gunn Clappaz, Smif N Wessun, and Heltah Skeltah were the independent NYC underground kings at the time. With production handled by Da Beatminerz, their label Duck Down Records was definitely a major player in the game. Their movement eventually caught the attention of 2pac who spent his last days recording with the crew for an album that was supposed to unite both coasts. After Pac passed the label went through some up and downs only to resurface as strong as ever with a new generation of MC's to carry the torch. So this a little something to pay homage to the Boot Camp Clik and Duck Down Records. I'll eventually make a part 2 of this with the newer generation of Duck Down so look out for that. Enjoy.(Parental Advisory)
