Capital J and DL Glass discuss the history of explicit lyrics. Explict lyrics were always apart of music however lyrics have gotten more explict. Two of the most notable explicit hiphop tracks were "Put it Your Mouth" by Akinyele and "F--- Tha Police" by NWA. What explicit track do you remember? What we're gonna do right here is go back....way back...back into time. By now you have probably noticed we took a few unannounced weeks of summer vacation. Shout out to everyone who reached out to inquire what in the actual fuck. We good, just taking a summer breather after releasing 50+ episodes a year for 5+ years (yes I'm flexin). No worries, we'll be back in July with mo hot shit. This week we wanted to bump this episode from the back end of our catalog. Episode 59 (and honestly it should have episode 69 considering the guest) our conversation with Akinyele. The Ak ha ha gave us a call from a Miami strip club and talked about Live at the BBQ, working with a young Nas, dealing with industry fuckery, and running for Mayor of Miami. With his seminal release Vagina Diner about to turn 30 we thought it was the perfect time to share this convo with one of raps raunchiest. In the carbon dated intro a young(er) Nate, Dave, and Demone talk about De La Soul's skirmishes with Tommy Boy over streaming. It's a DBRP CLASSIC Enjoy

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes the return of Dr. Akinyele Umoja. We spoke with him previously in the autumn of 2014 to discuss his book: We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement. Jackson is mentioned dozens of times in this text as the focus of counter violence efforts from people classified as black. We'll explore the water crisis in Jackson, Mississippi from through this historical lens. White media outlets reported on low water pressure and boil notices for the predominantly black town for a good portion of the summer. We'll examine the history of this region of Mississippi which boasts a long tradition of counter-violence - including the great Medgar Evers. We'll ask if this heavily black populated city's tradition of black resistance contributed to decades of health-compromising water problems for black residents of Jackson. #WaterTheMagnolias #BillRussell #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

On Thursday 11th of February 2021, a pregnant woman, a cart pusher, and a cobbler had an interaction in Shasha market in Akinyele local government of Oyo state. A misunderstanding turned into an argument which turned into a fight and the cobbler died. Over the next several days, shops and houses in and around Shasha market were burned and several people lost their lives and livelihoods. By the 15th of February, the Inspector General of Police deployed intervention and stabilization forces to Oyo state. In this episode we review what we know about what happened and some of the potential factors that led to the escalation of what was just supposed to be a fight in the market. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the DR. BUTCHER & CJ MOORE interview session! Normally, this would have been a Twice A Week week. You know, the usual - mix show on Tuesday, all new joints, Meeks and Doe talking trash, and then an interview session to follow on Thursday. However, the universe had something different in mind. These two legends were originally scheduled to be on the mix show this week to talk about “AGAINST ALL ODDS,” their new project with DA ODD COUPLE (ROB SWIFT & MISTA SINISTA of the X-ECUTIONERS) and keep it moving - but this thing turned into a TWO AND HALF HOUR history lesson. We let the tape roll and said forget all the new rap this week, this conversation is too important to stop. No cap, as the young folks say - this is foundation / architect / cornerstone type content, Vangardians. While we did manage to get the low down on the phenomenal production & engineering Butcher and CJ provided on the new LP with Rob & Sinista, as well as why they pulled in fresh talent like KE TURNER & RAY LUGER as features - we quickly got DEEP in that hip-hop Encyclopedia Brittanica: 1212 STUDIOS. [Note: Produced and aired in 2017] For more than four centuries, the communities formed by such escaped enslaved peoples dotted the fringes of plantations in the Americas, from Brazil to southeastern United States, from Peru to the American Southwest. Known variously as quilombos, mocambos, or mambeses, these new societies ranged from tiny bands that survived less than a year to powerful states encompassing thousands of members that survived for generations and even centuries. Their descendants still form semi-independent enclaves in several parts of the hemisphere -for example, in Suriname, French Guiana, Jamaica, Colombia and Belize. For generations, historians believed that even the most remarkable of maroon settlements in the North America did not rival the achievements of maroon communities in South and Central America as well as the Caribbean. Nevertheless, according to a number of scholars such as Cedric Robinson, Gerald Mullin as well as Herbert Aptheker evidence of the existence of at least fifty such communities in various places and at various times, from 1672 to 1864, has been found. Taken further back, Herbert Aptheker's work shows us that the 1st maroon communities pre-dated Jamestown settlements by 82 years. They were slave insurrectionists from abortive Spanish colonizing efforts in North and South Carolina. With this……We will listen to part of a discussion between famed independent filmmaker, activist, scholar Haile Gerima and Dr. Akinyele Umjoa where they discussed maroons and Dr. Umjoa's book, We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement… Haile Gerima is an independent filmmaker and professor of film at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Born and raised in Ethiopia, Gerima immigrated to the United States in 1967. After the award-winning Ashes & Embers (1982) and the documentaries Wilmington 10—U.S.A 10,000 (1978) and After Winter: Sterling Brown (1985), Gerima filmed his epic, Sankofa (1993). Gerima continues to distribute and promote his own films, including his most recent, Teza, which won the Jury and Best Screenplay awards at the Venice Film Festival in 2008. He also lectures and conducts workshops in alternative screenwriting and directing both within the U.S. and internationally. Dr. Akinyele Umjoa is a scholar-activist, who currently serves as the Chair of the Department of African-American Studies at Georgia State University (GSU). Dr. Umoja's writing has been featured in scholarly publications such as The Journal of Black Studies, Black Scholar, Radical History Review and Socialism and Democracy. And a number of edited volumes. He is also author of We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance in the Mississippi Freedom Movement. We then turn our attention to the theory and practice of the Black church. I sat down with Dr. Torin Alexander, where we explored the deep epistemological and ontological underpinnings of the black church. Paying attention to the differentiation of the Black church as an institutional-physical space and incubator of liberatory practice. Dr. Alexander is a scholar of African American religion and religious experience. His interdisciplinary research and teaching are influenced by phenomenology, critical theories on race and gender, and post-colonial/post-structuralist studies. Our show was produced today in solidarity with the Native/Indigenous, African, and Afro Descendant communities at Standing Rock; Venezuela; Cooperation Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi; Brazil; the Avalon Village in Detroit; Colombia; Kenya; Palestine; South Africa; and Ghana and other places who are fighting for the protection of our land for the benefit of all peoples! We have a very special guest this week, Akinyele. You may have heard his energetic verse on the classic Main Source track “Live at the BBQ” or his underground anthem “Put It In Your Mouth”. Now hear what he is up to these days and his refreshing, unique take on the De La/Tommy Boy controversy.
This is part two of a special report on Venezuela, in collaboration with Venezuelanalysis.com. First I speak with Christina Schiavoni, scholar and activist who deals with issues of food, food sovereignty, and agriculture. Her work in Venezuela has been very important to dispelling misinformation about food, food shortages, and agricultural production in Venezuela, as well as the great strides towards food sovereignty that the Bolivarian Revolution has made. We specifically reference an essay of hers titled "The Politics of Food in Venezuela" that masterfully combats myths and intentional misinformation surrounding the subject. Then Jeanette Charles of Venezuelanalysis.com interviews Dr. Akinyele Umoja, head of Georgia State University's Black Studies department and co-founder of the Malcom X Grassroots Movement. Akinyele is a friend of the Walter Rodney Foundation and has an incredible ability to tie relevant historical information in Black history with the social, political, and cultural movements of today. In this interview he discusses the long history of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement doing solidarity work with Afro-Venezuelans, how the Bolivarian Revolution was a Black revolution, and how the government has taken great strides to help African people both in Venezuela and throughout the entire diaspora. Dr. Umoja has traveled several times to Venezuela, including for the International Meeting on Reparations for African peoples which was held in Caracas. A very special thank you to Jonathan Chai-Chang Azterbaum, who did post-production for this episode, as well as part 1. If you missed part 1, where we cover the grassroots activist perspectives of the importance of the Bolivarian Revolution and elections in Venezuela, you can listen here.

It's only fair for when artists visit Dubai, they stop by the dukkan stoop to kick back and enjoy great conversations. They discussed his 1st trip visit to Dubai, the state of Hip Hop in the US and versus the world, his upbringing, and his new direction in inspiring the youth. #WelcomeToYourTribe ---- The Dukkan Show is hosted by OT, Irshad, Toofless, and Reem www.dukkanshow.com Facebook | Instagram | Twitter For those that don't know who Lord Finesse is, he is a DJ, producer, and rapper that was signed to Wild Pitch Records in 1989, home of other popular hip hop artists such as Gang Starr, Main Source, Chill Rob G, Percee P and O.C. In 1990, the duo released their debut album Funky Technician.[3] The album featured production from future star beat-makers DJ Premier, Diamond D and Showbiz. Soon after, Finesse formed the popular New York underground crew D.I.T.C., an acronym for "Diggin In The Crates", together with Showbiz & A.G. and Diamond D. Future members included Fat Joe, O.C., Buckwild, and Big L. Finesse returned as a solo artist in early 1992 with his second effort, Return of the Funky Man. The album featured guest appearances from Percee Pand AG. The album's title track peaked at number 13 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. Return of the Funky Man also included a couple of songs that were produced by Finesse himself, and this would be the start of a career as a much respected hip-hop producer. In 1994 Finesse made a production appearance on The Notorious B.I.G.'s classic debut Ready to Die, on the track "Suicidal Thoughts". In 1995, he produced a big portion of Big L's debut album Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous, including the single "M.V.P." and made an appearance on one of the album's highlight songs "Da Graveyard". He returned as an artist in 1996 with the now rare 12" single "Check The Method" and then the acclaimed album The Awakening. Finesse produced the entire album himself, and enlisted a large number of guests, including KRS-One, MC Lyte, Akinyele, Diamond D, Showbiz & A.G., O.C.and Kid Capri. The underground single "Actual Facts" featuring Sadat X, Large Professor and Grand Puba, was included as a hidden track on the album. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents #DrButcher #interview #session !! We’re talking about a Queens LEGEND here folks. LEGEND. When you layout the timeline of Queen’s hip-hop, this man is found at damn near the beginning. Given most of know Butcher as a phenomenal DJ/producer. we kick off the session discussing the influence of early hip-hop DJ’s like DJ Earthquake, DJ Polo (of Kool G Rap fame) and his crew The Spinmasters, as well as The Disco Twins. However, Butcher’s initial craft was rhyming - including an early group he formed with LL Cool J called The Extravagant Three, battling his way through Queens alongside Kool G Rap during his teenage years and the influence of Silver Fox on a young LL, G Rap and others. Say what?!? We eventually get into Butcher’s DJ/producer years and talk about his affiliation with the X-Men/X-ecutioners and helping a young Rob Swift train, his close relationships with production monsters Paul C and Large Pro, producing monumental soundscapes for Kool G Rap & Akinyele in the early to mid-90s and his soon-come producer LP that is around the corner.
