How to File Taxes as a Single-Member LLC

In this episode of Tax Tuesday, Anderson advisors Barley Bowler, CPA, and Eliot Thomas, Esq., address listener questions on tax topics ranging from basic bookkeeping to advanced ESOP strategies. They cover essential bookkeeping practices for first-time rental property owners and the tax implications of transferring a fully depreciated truck from an S corporation to personal use. Barley and Eliot explain how to catch up on missed depreciation from prior years, the tax benefits of inheriting property versus receiving it as a gift, and how independent contractors should handle federal income and employment taxes. Other topics include choosing the best filing structure for single-member LLCs, tax reduction strategies for Schedule C solopreneurs earning over $100K, deferring traditional IRA distributions using Qualified Longevity Annuity Contracts (QLACs), and the little-known 1042 fund strategy for deferring taxes on ESOP distributions. Tune in for practical tax advice and strategies to keep more of what you earn! Submit your tax question to taxtuesday@andersonadvisors.com Highlights/Topics: "What's the most efficient way to get my books ready for filing taxes? I'm filing taxes for my first time rental business. I just acquired them this year. I'm a first time landlord without bookkeeping experience." A: Use bookkeeping software and categorize expenses properly throughout the year. "My S corporation owns a fully depreciated truck. Can I transfer the truck to my personal name and start taking mileage reimbursement instead? What are the tax implications?" A: Yes, but you'll recognize income equal to fair market value. "For the eight years now, my prior taxpayer never took depreciation for any of my rental properties or my property assets for the building, along with the components like the water heater. What do I do now?" A: File Form 3115 for a change in accounting method. "I'm considering moving into my parents' home while they're still living there. I'm curious about the best way to either transfer the house into my name or should I stay there and wait until they pass because they intend to leave the house to me anyway." A: Wait for inheritance to receive stepped-up basis and avoid gift taxes. "How do I pay federal income and employment taxes working as an independent contractor receiving a 1099?" A: Pay quarterly estimated taxes using Form 1040-ES throughout the year. "What tax filing structure do you recommend for a single-owner LLC wanting to not be a disregarded entity? Why? Pros and cons of the options." A: Consider S corporation for self-employment tax savings if income supports it. "I'm a Schedule C solopreneur looking for ways to avoid being overtaxed. I made over $100K this year and I'm the only breadwinner in my family of four with two kids under 18. We're in Florida. What do you recommend for ways to lower my taxable income?" A: Establish S corp, maximize retirement contributions, and utilize business deductions. "Is there any way to defer for tax reporting a distribution from my traditional IRA? I recently heard someone talking about this and was not sure if they were referring to a Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract (QLAC)." A: Yes, QLACs allow deferring up to $200K until age 85. "How does a 1042 fund work? I've never heard of that." A: It defers ESOP distribution taxes by reinvesting in qualified replacement stock. In this Tax Tuesday episode, Anderson Business Advisors' Barley Bowler and Eliot Thomas, Esq., tackle complex listener questions covering bonus depreciation regulations, short-term to long-term rental property transitions, and the intricate tax ordering rules for combining stock losses with real estate gains. They explore nonprofit structures for foster care services, explain 1031 exchange debt requirements for orthodontic practice sales, and provide guidance on entity selection between partnerships and S-corporations for different business types. You'll hear how and when to handle Ponzi scheme theft loss deductions, corporate trading structures for stock income reduction, and the critical tax implications of providing company cars to family employees for personal use. Tune in for expert insights on these advanced tax strategies and planning considerations! Submit your tax question to taxtuesday@andersonadvisors.com Highlights/Topics: "Regarding section 168 bonus depreciation, it says to qualify for 100% the property must have been purchased after January 20th, 2025. Does that mean property purchased in 24 but not put into use till 2025 would not qualify?" –This is proposed legislation, not current law yet. "What are the tax implications of shifting properties from short-term rental to long-term rental after leveraging cost segregation reports to accelerate depreciation to offset some W2 income?" – Cannot do both in same year; changes passive loss treatment. "Can you use short-term stock loss carryover to offset real estate depreciation recapture and capital gains?" – Yes, but only after specific tax code ordering rules. "In the state of Florida, could parent fostering be conducted as a nonprofit business entity?" – Cannot earmark nonprofit funds for specific individuals or children. "My husband's selling his orthodontic practice using a 1031 option. Can he pay off the existing loan before reinvesting the profit?" – Yes, QI will pay off debt; need equal/greater replacement debt. "My S corporation business doesn't have cash flow to reimburse me for all benefits. Can I add unpaid reimbursements to my balance sheet like an owner loan?" – Need specific analysis of cash flow and reimbursement timing. "My wife and I have a holding company LLC and multiple subsidiary LLCs currently taxed as partnerships. Should they be changed to S-corp?" – Real estate stays partnership; operating businesses - consider S-corp election. "In a Ponzi scheme, does the discovery year have to be the year charges are filed?" – Discovery year when you become aware through government notification. "Would establishing an LLC help me reduce tax on income from stock trading?" – Consider corporate trading partner structure for meaningful capital gains. "Our C corp employs our son part-time. What are the tax implications of buying him a car for personal use only?" – Buy in his name, increase salary; avoid corporate ownership. How to Use 401(k) Funds to Start a Nonprofit (Avoiding 10% Penalty)

Anderson Business Advisors Podcast

Today, Anderson Advisors attorneys Barley Bowler, CPA, and Eliot Thomas, Esq. discuss topics including how 401(k) funds can be borrowed up to $50,000 without tax penalties while confirming that backdoor Roth IRA contributions made in 2024 but converted in 2025 still allow for additional 2025 contributions. Eliot and Barley discuss why S-corporations cannot deduct wellness expenses through accountable plans unless medically prescribed, and confirm the 20% Qualified Business Income deduction applies across multiple businesses. For entity structures, they recommended against holding appreciating real estate in corporations, favoring disregarded LLCs for asset protection. Regarding trading partnerships with C-corporations, these need written contracts for guaranteed payments, and confirmed short-term rental owners can switch to self-management to claim material participation benefits and accelerated depreciation through cost segregation. Send your tax questions to taxtuesday@andersonadvisors.com. Highlights/Topics: "Are there ways to withdraw funds from a 401(k), a retirement account, without moving it into an IRA?" a sponsored plan versus an individual plan? "We're also starting a nonprofit business. And how can we avoid that 10% early withdrawal penalty?" - Take a loan from your 401(k) for up to $50,000 without tax/penalty. "I attempted to do a backdoor Roth IRA conversion. On December 24th, I did it at the end of the year. I'm a high-income earner, was not aware of the financial institution, and had made a temporary change. There was some hold time for the funds. We made a deposit contribution at the end of the year. The question here is, the $7000 post-tax contributed to the traditional IRA in December was not available to convert? We went over the past the end of the year to the 2025 tax year, and we're wondering how that's treated since the conversion was completed in 2025, but the contributed contribution occurred in 2024. Is another $7000 contribution allowed?" - Yes, you can make another $7000 contribution in 2025 for another conversion. "Can we use this to reimburse for gym membership, supplements, wellness plans, stuff like that?" - No, wellness plans aren't tax-deductible unless medically prescribed. "My S-corporation provides financial services." Another question. We're talking about the qualified business income deduction, that 199A. That's a pretty good deduction, 20%. Good chunk of deduction. "Can we take that if we have two different businesses? How does that work? What's that look like?" - Yes, you can take the 199A deduction for both businesses simultaneously. "I have two LLCs holding trading accounts, so a couple of different LLCs." We're going to talk about our trade structure a little bit differently. We also have just what we call a safe asset holding straight. If we have a brokerage account, high-value collectibles, or something like that. "Does putting a rental property into a disregarded LLC have any tax benefits?" "Can I transfer the interest of a disregarded to a holding company or to a living trust?" - Yes, with in-kind transfers; check with a broker; generally no tax consequences. "I have a trading partnership." "Do I need a contract?" We're talking about guaranteed payments here, a very unique payment to a partner. - Yes, need a written contract detailing services between a partnership and C-corp. "What are the pros and cons of holding real estate investments in a disregarded LLC, C-corp versus S-corp?"- Avoid S/C-corps for appreciating property; use disregarded LLCs with management entity. "We're buying our first short-term rental this year. Considering using a third-party property manager, can I manage the property next year with material participation?" - Yes, you can manage it yourself in year two and claim cost segregation benefits.   Resources: Schedule Your FREE Consultation https://andersonadvisors.com/strategy-session/?utm_source=how-to-use-401k-funds-to-start-a-nonprofit&utm_medium=podcast Tax and Asset Protection Events https://andersonadvisors.com/real-estate-asset-protection-workshop-training/?utm_source=how-to-use-401k-funds-to-start-a-nonprofit&utm_medium=podcast Anderson Advisors https://andersonadvisors.com/ Toby Mathis YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@TobyMathis Toby Mathis TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@tobymathisesq Clint Coons YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@ClintCoons

Portland musician Jimmie Herrod has sung in many different kinds of venues for a variety of performances. He’s been a guest vocalist with Portland-based Pink Martini since 2017. He was a finalist on "America's Got Talent" in 2021, and his past shows include performances with numerous symphonies, including the Oregon Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra. But his upcoming show with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony is a unique performance. The program consists of orchestral arrangements done in collaboration with youth composers for six of his original songs: Are You Lonely, Beautiful, I Love You, I Want To Run, Mouche, and Willow Bed. MYS trombone player and composer Elaina Stuppler arranged I Love You with only a rough recording Herrod made for her on his phone. Music Director Raúl Gómez-Rojas facilitated the unique project, which will be performed on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at the Newmark Theatre in Portland. He joins us in studio, along with Herrod and Stuppler, to talk about the creative process and bring us a sneak peak of the show.

We're also now on Tik-Tok - if you're there, come hang out!Episode Transcript:Alex Freeman: This is the Michigan and Trumbull podcast with your hosts Alex S. Freeman and Luke Jaconis.Hello and welcome to season four of the Michigan and Trumble podcast. New, intro sound for you there. we're back on video if you're joining us over here on the YouTube. but as always, like a bad penny, haven't been able to get rid of him. Joined, by Luke Jaconis. I'm Alex Freeman. welcome to the show. If you're just joining us for the first time, Luke, it's been a minute since, we've dropped an episode. How you been?Luke Jaconis: I've been very well. Very well. Four, seasons of this show, entering the fourth season. Who would have thunk it? We've already done better than the Friends spin off Joey, so that's at least we've got that going for us.Alex Freeman: That's something.Luke Jaconis: Life, has been good. Life has been great. Very busy these, last couple of weeks, last couple of months. I would say that I missed talking Tigers baseball, but I'm just going to say up front, I'm going to come in very pessimistic off the bat. I didn't miss it at all because A, they didn't do anything this offseason, which I know we're going to get to in a little bit. And B, and this is probably the wrong way to look at it. I still got a sour taste in my mouth from 2022. I'm not over it yet. I know we kind of did our grievances episode in November, remember, where we tried to exercise all of our demons, but I'm just a little bit upset about it. And then you take into consideration the moves or lack thereof going into this off season. There's not a ton to be happy to be happy about right now if you're a Detroit Tigers fan, in my opinion. But, as I texted you, Alex, this season I'm going to try to practice, patience. I m am going to try and practice restraint. And I look forward to that lasting me about, I don't know, another four or five minutes into this episode and then I intend to blow a gasket like anger from inside out.Alex Freeman: Yeah, I think that we're going to be set up, nicely for that. So a few housekeeping things at the top here which I think will keep you from blowing a gasket. we are mixing up the structure of the show a little bit, as we enter season four. So we're planning to drop episodes every two weeks that seems to, from the past three years be the rhythm that is sustainable for us through the season. without coming to you and just kind of repeating everything we've said in the previous episode, we're going to be focusing more a little bit on Big Picture than Day to Day of the Team. I think that there's a lot of great ways in which you can follow Day To Day, Tigers news, that type of minutiae. We're going to kind of take the broader look, at kind of what trends are we seeing in the team. what is the vibe check of the fan base, as well as including some more, kind of stats and trivia and that kind of stuff into the show as well. as we go through that, one thing you may or may not notice, hopefully you don't actually notice if you just are a regular subscriber of the show on a podcast app. We have migrated the home of the show to Substack. you can find us at Michiganandtrumbull substac.com. there you can subscribe to the show. we haven't yet mixed in any long form blogging or anything. but if you do go over to the show and you subscribe, you'll, get an email every time a new episode drops so you don't miss one. And then throughout the season we'll be experimenting with substance in ways in which we can interact with all of you, in those spots. So do go over to Michigan and Trumble, substac.com and subscribe. But if you are an audio listener to the show, hopefully you notice nothing different. because that means that I did everything right on the back end to migrate the show over to substack. yeah. Luke, any other housekeeping that I've forgotten here?Luke Jaconis: no. that was great. For real great stuff. Lots of fun changes happening. All jokes and bits aside, the fact that we've made it four seasons and a that I guess we haven't really got into the fourth season. So we don't know if people are going to listen or watch the show. But the fact that we haven't been at least canceled on Twitter, the fact you and I haven't strangled each other yet, albeit even virtually or via, we've nearly outlasted Twitter itself, I know that's saying something. That's saying something. So I am very excited to embark on a fourth season. And although I truly wasn't that jazz to talk Tigers baseball these last couple of months, the fact that we're getting close to spring training, the World Baseball Classic is coming around. It's impossible for me not to get a little excited, a little jittery, even though I know my team is going to absolutely, I think, rip my heart out once again. This season, and I can't wait to do it. I do have one last piece of information to announce before we get into the show. I did legally change my name, this offseason, and I'm now going to display that on my zoom, link below.Alex Freeman: Hey. luke as the tigers. Sorry, Luke. I apologize for using, your old name there. I'm the Tigers third baseman. somebody has it's me. Somebody's got to be the Tigers third baseman. which I think, Luke, that is a beautiful transition to bring us into the first new, official segment of the show, which is a Luke rant. This is wonderful. Really great.Luke Jaconis: It's great. I got theme music and everything. After four after three seasons editing the fourth season, I got I got theme music. I don't want to listen to it for a second.Alex Freeman: Yeah. My big mouth, more or less a live reaction from Luke here.Luke Jaconis: I like it. I like it. I feel like, if for those, you are WWE fans, just like the theme music, like a jobber that's about to come out and just get his absolute teeth kicked in in a matter of 10 seconds by, like, the guy, the big bad baddie that's trying to get over. That's the job or theme song perfect. And that's what exactly I am a jobber. Look, I like the rant. Ranting is fun. It also makes it cleanses the soul. this really, I don't think is going to be a rant. It might snowball into one. I'm just frustrated, folks. Am I the only one who's not frustrated out there with this team? What they have done, or like I said, lack thereof, that they've done going into this season, going off, 2022. We all know that it was a huge letdown. Injuries underperforming, historically one of the worst offenses, if not the worst offense, in the modern era of baseball. Just absolutely atrocious. They fire Aloe Vila. We throw the parade. We're all stoked. We bring in this new guy, Scott Harris. He's saying all the right things. kind of wrapping up the 2022 season, going into the 23 off season. And while we didn't expect him to go out there and make those big contracts and big signings like we all may have liked, I think we at least expected in some capacity, some moves to be made. And while, yes, they did bring back, Matthew Boyd, and they did sign Michael Lorenzen, they did make the trade. Send Joe Jimenez to Atlanta, and we will get later into the one big trade that actually did enjoy the Tigers and the Phillies made. Take all that out of the equation. They really didn't do anything. And let's not try to polish a turd and tell me it's a three dollar bill. That's not even a saying. But I just made it up. let's not pretend and be naive to the fact that they actually made a lot of insanely impressive or great moves. And I've heard the people on Twitter and I've read the blogs and all that stuff. We have to give Scott Harris a fair shake. He's inheriting Alavila's mess. Chris Ilochi is still the owner of this team. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Well, I do think there is some truth to that. I said this towards the tail end when Scott Harris got hired. The fans, at least in my opinion, aren't going to be patient, and I don't think they need to be patient. They've been patient for eight years now, and they've had absolutely nothing to show for it. They haven't played playoff baseball since 2014. They haven't had a winning season of 500 or better since 2016. Came pretty close in 2021. But then we obviously saw a huge step back in 2022. So I just am annoyed. I'm just frustrated. I'm trying to be positive, but there's just no need or reason for me or I think, other fans to be positive. I do think Scott Harris is the guy. I am not by any means saying, let's sell Scott Harris down the river by any means shape or form. Am I saying that? But after all the hype, I guess, or kind of excitement that was there, even minimally, going from 2022 to 2023, it just feels like it was kind of a dud. I have a theory, and I'm going to kick it back to you in a second here, Alex. There is one thing that will save this team this offseason, or, this upcoming season, I should say. And I'll get to that in a second, but I guess, Alex, I'll kick it to you again. Like I said, not much of a rant, just kind of an airing of grievances. we didn't do a festivist episode this year, so I had to kind of make up for lost time, I guess. What are you feeling heading into the season? Tiger's moves? Not so many moves. Scott Harris's approach. Where are you at going into the season? Like I text you today, I've set my expectations so low that I think I have no choice but to be pleasantly surprised. But make no mistake about it, as much as I goof around, I joke, I rant, I bet. I think this is going to be an abysmal season for the Tigers. I don't think it's going to be good unless one thing happens. And like I said, I'll get to that in a second. But in the meantime, I'll kick it back to you.Alex Freeman: Yeah, I guess this is as good a time as I need to tell folks. we will be at Comerica Park, for the final game of the regular season, which we can pretty safely call Miguel Cabrera's last regular season home game. As a Tiger, I think my feelings on the season are summed up in that I have to remind myself to add the regular season caveat, as opposed to, just kind of naturally saying his last home game as a Tiger will, be the final game of the season. And, I was telling some other guys about how we've got the tickets and it's going to be a good time, and they say, well, what about the playoffs? And I said, well, honestly, the best worst case scenario is that they are somehow competing for a playoff spot that day, which then means the question facing the Tigers is, how much do you play Miguel Cabrera on that day if they are fighting for a playoff spot? Because obviously you have to play him that day. but if they're competing for a playoff spot, it means Miguel Cabrera is not the main contributor on your roster. which I don't foresee. I still foresee Miguel Cabrera being one of the top contributors on this roster, and that should not be happening at this point in his career.Luke Jaconis: Yeah, I mean, first of all, very excited to go to comerica, in October. give Miguel Cabrera a proper and well deserved sendoff. Make no mistake about it, that will not only be his final regular season game, that will be his final game. This team isn't going to the playoffs. There's a very good chance, as history will repeat itself in the last two seasons, they will be eliminated by the end of the month. There's a good chance they might be eliminated by Easter, which would really be a pretty incredible feat considering I'm pretty sure the season doesn't even start until after Easter. I might be wrong on that, but someone can fact check me later. yeah, it's the same old song and dance that 40 year old Miguel Cabrera, almost 40. Miguel Cabrera, at this point, should not be a main contributor to your lineup. I'm so excited to see Mickey. I'm always excited to see M Mickey. The sentimental part of me is sad that he is going, but knows that it's time, it's time to hang it up. But I want to give him the send off he has rightfully earned over his illustrious career as a future first ballot hall of Famer. Mickey deserves, hopefully, every state, and he goes to a packed house and a standing ovation for, his final game when he's traveling across the country this, next season. I share your thoughts with that as well. I, think there is little chance at all that this team is I like your idea that maybe that final game in October, it's that final game pushed to get in, but I just don't see that happening at all. I think hell is a better chance of freezing over before that happens. the one thing I want to talk about that I kind of alluded to a moment ago was that, the only saving grace for me this season, because I think going into it, the rotation is worse than last year. It's intriguing, but I don't think it's as good as I would feel much more confident of casey Myers and obviously Terric Scuba were in the rotation. That's kind of a given. excited Spencer Turnbull back, but you got to keep in mind he's coming off Tommy John, so you don't really know how that's going to work. We only had Erod for 14 or 15 starts last year. I think this is a year where Matt Manning really puts it together, so that's exciting. Ah, and then Lorenzen and Matthew Boyd, the nicest guy on earth. They're essentially, again, kind of those innings leaders that we were hoping to avoid, but we knew we would have to get them. Just given the pitching injuries going into the season, take the starting pitching and we'll get to the bullpen a little bit later as well. Let's look at the offense because that's obviously and I think everyone's biggest question going. They didn't sign, really a single position player at this point in time heading into the season. I know I made the joke with my name. They really don't have a true starting third baseman going into spring training. There are a lot of question marks with this team, that I think still have not been answered. And obviously we're going to get those answers in spring training. But let's take all those questions. We'll get to all that in a little bit. The one thing, and it's such a cop out to say that can save this team and maybe make this season a pleasant surprise, similarly to 2021 is the bounce back season, because historically, last year, some of these guys on offense were terrible and some of these guys were injured. We didn't have a full season of Austin Meadows. We had a sophomore slump for Akiel BA. Du. Jonathan Scope was absolutely atrocious. Spencer Torkelson, an absolutely atrocious rookie campaign, good on defense. Offense was abysmal. And this is a big if. If all of those guys can even play to half their capacity that we know they're capable of, then maybe this season is somewhat of a pleasant surprise. Again, kind of like the 2021. hopefully Riley Green doesn't progress.Alex Freeman: I'm sorry, regress sake.Luke Jaconis: Not regress.Alex Freeman: That's it.Luke Jaconis: We want one year and that's it. no, hopefully he doesn't regress. Hobby is going to be Hobby at this point. I know he had a pretty good month of September, so it made his overall line look not as bad, but I believe, I'm not mistaken, led all position players last year in errors on defense, not good at all. Javier, not good at all. so we know what he's going to do. Miggy is going to be Miggy. I am excited to see it seems like it's, pointing in all directions that Eric Haas is going to win the starting catching job out of camp. So I am excited to see what Haasi can do because I voted him my Tigers MVP of last year because I thought he was kind, of the most consistent hitter, I guess, for what it's worth, throughout that 2022 season. So the bounce back. Live by it, die by it. If some of these guys bounce back, great, and I think some of them truly will, there's no way Jonathan Scope will be as bad as last year. He physically can't be. If Austin Meadows is healthy, I fully expect him to see him kind of return to the Austin Meadows we thought he was going to be when he came over from that Tampa trade last spring training. So it's just a matter of time, it's a matter of waiting. It is a little bit of patience, which I don't have much of at this point, but, we'll see what happens. If they are similar to last year, god help us all. It's going to be brutal.Alex Freeman: I think that's a really strong, transition there, Luke, into, talking about, the offseason and where this team is right now. I think let's stay in the roster conversation, because, what will mix into that and I guess there's not a big discussion. We're changing the dimensions at Comerica Park. it will be 412 to center, as opposed to 420, which theoretically smoke. It means the offense should be better at home because we're going to play our games, play half our games in a stadium that is no longer as picture friendly. 412 is still a long way. but you can't smoke it's. Still a big.Luke Jaconis: Co host ever.Alex Freeman: so funny. you got to be stuck with the hedges out there, I guess.Luke Jaconis: This is what dreams are made of. And also the lights. We're getting new lights. Honestly, that was the biggest news of this offseason. They're moving in the fences slightly and they're changing the lights. That's when you know your team is just in an utter state of disrepair. When those are the big things that people are excited egg on our face.Alex Freeman: When they win 105 games because of these changes.Luke Jaconis: Yeah, the best thing about, the moving in the fences was, I think, when they announced it on Instagram, mickey commented. He said, now I want to play more years. some other things before we kind of look at the roster. this was announced, I think, last week or the week before. We've got some changes in the booth. Bye bye, Jack Morris. Hello, Craig Monroe, and also welcome Cameron Maven and Todd Jones to the fold.Alex Freeman: Yeah, I'm excited about having CMO in the booth on a regular basis. was always excited when he was agreed, in the booth. especially the times that he sits in. I think everybody knows that he's great at it. I also loved him when he was on the radio broadcast. yeah, just excited for more simo.Luke Jaconis: I know people like dog on Matt Shepherd. We've always kind of stuck up for Chef a little bit. I think he's kind of also look at what he's had to commentate on these last number of seasons. But also, I think Jack Morris didn't give him much to work with. Kirk Gibson is always kind of in and out of there on a limited basis. So if they could establish a good relationship between Freckman Rowe and Matt Shepard, I am okay with that. I think that could be really fun. Cameron Maven, coming in is kind of cool. Todd Jones, I like that they're bringing in the more former Tigers, and it's kind of crazy to say, but Tigers players of our era, so I know Cameron Maven had a couple of different stints with the Tigers. Todd Jones, obviously was big in the six run, but, it's cool. It's kind of cool. And also, it makes me feel hate to say it a little old being like, I remember watching that guy play. Now he's talking about the good old days and, my mind how time flies so, yeah, I'm great and sing jack Morris. Lee, take care of Jack.Alex Freeman: I could care less yeah, I hit the road Jack don't you come back no more, no more, no.Luke Jaconis: More, no more, no more love it. this is what I have for the roster. I just took a couple of quick notes here.Alex Freeman: Is it just of a dumpster fire?Luke Jaconis: ah, I'm not too good with the words, but I'm trying my best here. yeah, it's pretty great. okay, so kind of just projections, I think, where we're heading into the season. So starting catcher, I think, out of camp, we're looking at Eric Hoss, starting first baseman. Out of camp, spencer Torkelson, second baseman. Jonathan Scope, shortstop. Javier Baez, third baseman. I put who the hell knows? I mean, according to my name on Zoom, I am the Tigers third baseman, but that's how that is.Luke Jaconis: Riley Green is our starting center fielder. Akilba Dewan. Left, Austin Meadows and right DH is Miguel Cabrera. So that's where we're at with that. Any objections? Anything you think? What are your thoughts?Alex Freeman: I'm, just throwing in that the official depth chart on MLB.com shows Ryan Kriler as the I saw that the.Luke Jaconis: People, I guess, we're assuming are going for that are, Ryan Creedler, and then Nick Mayton. So he came over in the, Phillies trade. So there's that. Also, real quick, I guess we kind of talked to me. I don't know if we talked about this last time. It's been an episode, but a lot of guys gone from this team that have been kind of mainstays on the roster for these last four or five years. Victor Reyes, gone. Willie Castro, gone. Harold castro gone. And, then obviously, I think the big one who I think was on the bubble the most, jamer candelario gone and now is a Washington National. So just kind of throwing that out there, saying goodbye to those guys. They've been around a while. Das. Cameron derek Hill was gone last season. So a lot of these guys that were kind of that all of you, like, are they going to be mainstays? They're all gone. So Willy's with the Twins, I think carol Castro's with the Rockies, victor Reyes when it stays with the White Sox. the boys have flown the coop, so to speak. Or actually they didn't fly away, they were told to leave.Alex Freeman: Yeah, no, I mean, I think that, those changes are interesting because when they happened, it was like, okay, this is maybe the start of some clearing house. We're going to go make some moves in this offseason. We're going to go reassemble a roster. We're going to mix it with some of the kind of up and coming guys that we are sort of excited about as we go through that. all of those things. And yet that didn't really happen in the off season. Ah, I would say as of yet, but pitchers and catchers are reporting in, what, like two weeks?Luke Jaconis: less than that at this point. next week, I'm pretty sure.Alex Freeman: Obviously, those moves aren't going to happen. I don't know what that means.Luke Jaconis: For well, there's just so many moves that felt like it could have been made, even filler bubble moves. But I guess you have to think Scott Harris is taking the approach of let's see what we've got, rather than bring in someone we don't really anticipate being around for the long haul. So that's probably there looking at the bench. Jake Rogers?Alex Freeman: Matt.Luke Jaconis: Vierling. Carrie Carpenter? Tyler Nevin. And then I also put, Ryan Fryler down there as well. two guys to keep an eye on for this upcoming season. offensively, I don't think they're going to make the teams out of camp. I could be wrong. One is Justin Henry, Malloy, we got him from the tray with Jo Jimenez of the Braves. And then the other is Donny Sands, Donnie Sands, and he was a catcher that came, in the Phillies trade as well. so I thought I saw some rumors. Maybe Donnie Sands wins the backup job because Jake Rogers might need some real game time coming off missing all of last year. But only time will tell at that. And from what I can tell, Justin Harry Milloy, pretty good eye batting eye from the basic research, which I've done, and pretty quick, from my understanding, he's a third base left fielder. So, it could be interesting because one, the Tiger is third baseman, obviously, that jobs up for grabs. And two, the assumed starting left fielder heading into opening day is a Kilba Du, and if he continues to struggle like he did last year, maybe Malloy comes in and takes his spot probably sometime a few months into the season, if it were to happen.Alex Freeman: Yeah, I agree completely. let's kind of talk about the outfield there because obviously Eric Haas factors into that calculation as well. has played some left field. I think when his BAT's been working, he's been a fine outfielder and, a solid bat to have in the lineup, which then obviously layers into the catching equation of what you do at the catching position, which I do think it is. I think it'll be Jake Rogers coming out of camp.Luke Jaconis: Yeah. You think Jake Rogers is going to win the starting job out of camp?Alex Freeman: I do. I think so. I feel that's cool, excited about that.Luke Jaconis: do you feel God on this chilies tonight as well?Alex Freeman: I do. And, very shortly, I will no longer be allowed to eat at a chili's. my worst nightmare, I have been stealing drinks from other people.Luke Jaconis: That is a thought that keeps me up at night and I wake up in a cold sweat. I respectfully disagree. I don't think Jake is going to win the starting job out of camp. I do think if Eric HOS, struggles and if Jake Rogers I think Jake Rogers is fighting to get a spot out of camp, obviously. I think just based off his history coming off the injury, I think he has a lot to prove going into this camp that he is still he's really kind of like the only one of the last few guys that I can think of on top of my head that's kind of around from those of era trades. Like, this guy might be something, but that I can think of that's kind of a main name floating around this team. so that's interesting. I, think Haas is going to win it out of camp. I think his days in left field are pretty numbered at this point. I, think they'll definitely roll with either a Kilba Du, Matt Veerling. they'll probably also want to start getting other guys out there from the miners that we haven't seen yet. Carpenter might play out there. that'll be kind of fascinating to track. The Tigers really haven't had that solid starting to catch. Like, this is our guy since probably, what, James McCann, Alexa Villa, something along those lines. So Pop Haas takes the ball and runs with it. I think he had a pretty solid little season last year, especially considering he got off to such a brutal start in the beginning of the year. he kind of really came into the last half, of the season, which was really good for him. So, pork at first base, I think that's a given. We're all waiting for the bounce back for torquelson. So. Same thing there. Same thing can be said for Jonathan Scope at second base.Alex Freeman: Maybe.Luke Jaconis: there's rumors they put Scope at third base and they did just recently sign, was it, Caesar Hernandez wasn't, at Baltimore played recently, if you're mistaken. signed him to, ah, a minor league deal invite spring training. I'm pretty sure something along those lines. so maybe he goes to second. that would be interesting. But that's an option too, I've heard. Maybe putting scoping at third. Hobby is the guy short. this could be potentially Hobby's last year because he could opt out after the season. I'm not mistaken.Alex Freeman: Yeah, that's true. It'll be interesting to see. you talk about bounce back seasons, right? like surely Javi can't be as bad this year as he was last year. Surely that can't be the case.Luke Jaconis: Defensively is what I want to make that more pointed towards. Because offensively, you look at his final numbers on the year they were whatever. it's the same thing I said last year that I'm saying this year. He is a piece of the puzzle. He is not the entire puzzle.Alex Freeman: Right.Luke Jaconis: He is a puzzle piece, but he is not the entire puzzle. So we're in the same boat as we are as last year. I hope to God. How can he be as bad last year defensively as he was this year as it was last year?Alex Freeman: How many pieces of the puzzle do they have though?Luke Jaconis: I don't even know if they have the top of the box for the puzzle that you can set it up on your table to look at to make sure you're doing it right. I don't even think they have that right now. They don't have a plan. There's no plan. It feels like at the moment, I'm not trying to knock Scott Harris. I know he's the new guy, we have to give him some leeway. But I don't even think we got the damn box to look at the puzzle to try to even assemble it.Alex Freeman: Yeah, I think that you look at a team that has as many needs as the Detroit Tigers had, and especially after you clean house and right. And again, rightfully so. I think it was the right move to let those guys go. but to get to move on from Jamer Candelario and not bring in an upgrade at third base when you don't have to go far to have an upgrade to inconsistent Jamer Candelario, you just need a guy that you're like, okay, yeah. Over the past four seasons he's been consistent. This is what we get from him. that's an upgrade to Jamer Candelario and I don't think we even have that.Luke Jaconis: Well, I think also too, if Scott is obviously trying to assess talent, and who knows, it could have been a financial thing. I thought I read something like the Tigers wanted to bring Jamar in for four and he signed with six or something. I could be wrong on that, but I thought there were some rumblings of that, so maybe that's a factor. but if Scott is assessing talent, like, we can only assume that he is. It is maybe a little bit fascinating now that we're removed from the situation and Jamer is gone and we are where we are with the third base, dilemma. That interesting. Did he not want to give Jamer one more year just to see or maybe he's seen enough at this point? Or maybe it was a financial thing. Or maybe he just knows, like, this guy is not our guy. Or maybe he sees something down the road with a crider or a Nick Mayton or moving scope to third and giving someone a shot at second. There's probably something we're not seeing. But, from the outsider and the fan perspective, it is a bit of a head scratch. Like, the fact that we are days away from pitchers and catchers reporting and we don't have a third basement. I mean, it's not a good look. You look at what the Astros are doing right now, locking up so many of their core guys, we're just, like, being like, can the guy who waters the infield in between innings, can he throw on a glove and maybe take some reps a third? Because that's where we're at right now.Alex Freeman: Yeah, I think that, if you showed up at spring training with a myth, you might have a chance, you got a shot. You're probably going to get some playing time that day, at least. So I guess fans get down to, ah, Joker, Martin and, get stretched out because you're in it's about a.Luke Jaconis: Three hour drive for me. Just got to go a little bit north. Three, three and a half hours. I might do that. Put on the cleats and see if I can hang with them.Alex Freeman: No, Luke, I mentioned that, when we were talking before the episode that I have sort of left Twitter, as a user, you're on there a little bit more. You've always kind of been more active with the show's Twitter account. my sense and this could just be like my own feelings, because I'm not I have not been as engaged with the Tigers fan base during this offseason. my sense is that it's a continuation of kind of where the base felt at the end of last season, which is, like, almost who cares?Luke Jaconis: It's a who cares? And it's a what's going on? Mentality. From what I can gauge. There are people, there's a lot of people, which I've been pleasantly surprised, who have gone the who cares route, because I think they're just fed up and done, to a certain extent, which I'm okay with that. I don't begrudge those people for thinking that you can't consistently, year after year, put s**t out onto the field and just m expect your fans to be like mindless sheep. And it's like, I'm excited for this. This is great. We're not dummies. We know what's going on here. We know what the situation is. Then you have another camp of fans like, well, you got to give Scott Harris's due. He's not Ala Villa. You can't blame him for Avila's mistakes. And then you've got a camp of people who are kind of thinking, it's not going to be as bad as we're all making it out to be. I ran a poll on Twitter, on our Twitter the other day, and I'm trying to think of how many, I just said, where are we at heading into spring training wins wise? What do you think is the projection? Let me see what the numbers were here. Okay, so, I said, how many games will the Tigers win in 2023? 39 votes. People that voted on this, first place, a 49% vote is 70 to 80. And from what I can tell, I'll just kind of jump the shark here for a second. I did look at some projections heading into the season. The one I could find that I felt trusted and just kind of I liked their stuff, that they put out fan graphs as the Tigers finishing in fourth place with a record of 71 and 91. So a little bit worse than the 2021 season. A little bit better than last year. And honestly, I think that's fair. That seems right. Of course, I hope they catch lightning in a bottle and they win some of those close games early on in the year, and maybe that pushes them closer to that 500 mark. I mean, it's just so pathetic that here we are, so many years into this stupid ass rebuild. Not a rebuild, rebuilding the rebuild. Covering up Alavilla's mistakes, going into the Scott Harris era, whatever you want to call it. Eight years in. We're just hoping it's an atrocious mindset to have that. Finishing 500 feels like we're going to throw a parade sometime in October, because that's honestly what it feels like to be a Tigers fan. And that's the truth. That's where we're at right now. Forget winning the division. Forget competing for a wild card. If we could win 81 baseball games, I am convinced that they may make it a national holiday in the city of Detroit.Alex Freeman: If we could be 500 in April, I think I'm ready to throw a throw parade.Luke Jaconis: This is going to be it's gonna be a it's going to be a tough April. Unless unless they are hot out of the gate. And I'm not just saying that to be the, you know, pessimistic here, but you look at the schedule. It is a tough April. And you look at their last two Aprils and how poorly they've gone. Good luck. Good luck.Alex Freeman: What do we do, if April and May look like April and May have looked the last seven years?Luke Jaconis: I don't know.Alex Freeman: How do we keep watching baseball in June if that's the case? Because this roster is not like if April and May are terrible like they have been, they're done. And what then does Scott Harris do? Because there's not pieces to get rid of. There's not moves to be made at the trade deadline. There's just we're awful for another four months.Luke Jaconis: I guess, the question is, like, who would the Tigers then target the trade? Do you trade someone like Javi Bayes? Do you trade someone like Eduardo Rodriguez? There's been rumors that Erod may get traded before opening day even. So, who knows? Who knows? But those are probably the kind of, I mean, Mickey's off the books after this season. maybe a guy like a Matt Manning. You do some package. Who knows? I think the only guy that I really feel is Untouchable right now is Riley Green. and rightfully, I can't believe him m saying Spencer TorqueL. Does he get moved if he gets really hot out the gate? I think Torque is also pretty high up there, for the record, on that Untouchable list as well.Alex Freeman: I think if he's doing well enough to be potentially traded, I think that has put him into the Untouchable category.Luke Jaconis: I agree. Why would you trade a guy that if he's beating up and everything, could be a huge benefit down the road? So?Alex Freeman: Yeah.Luke Jaconis: I don't know. I mean, I'm not trying to be negative, but I think there's a very good chance that by the end of April, this team is already a good ten to twelve games under 500. You look at that month of April schedule, and I know we're not going to do a schedule breakdown today on this episode, but it's brutal. Just I'm going to throw you some teams real quick that they will be playing, if my app would ever load. Come on, MLB. This is brutal. Anyways, there's a lot of good teams at the price analysis. Okay, here we go. Boston. Toronto. I mean San Francisco. Cleveland. Baltimore. Milwaukee. Baltimore. These are all teams, if I'm not mistaken, that last year finished 500 or close within a couple of games. There's no Royals on this list. There's no Pittsburgh Pirates on this list. These are all teams that are good. God, you're playing three teams from the Al lease. And that division is going to be again route, actually four teams tampa, Houston, Boston, Toronto, and Baltimore and then Cleveland. It's going to be tough. It is April and then, oh, by the way, it doesn't get any easier. in May, the Mets, the Cardinals, Cleveland, Seattle. And then for two games, they get the Pittsburgh Pirates. So AJ. Hinch better have miracle speech.Alex Freeman: Got two wins locked in, in April and May. Look at the world neither of them will be against the Pirates. That's the thing that's going to be the most frustrating yeah. Not to continue kicking this roster, but as I look at it, I'm excited about two guys. Maybe like, I'm excited about Riley Green, but I'm excited in the way that Detroit fans have been excited about guys for their whole lives. I'm excited about what Riley Green can do this season. there's still not a team around him that they can actually do anything with.Luke Jaconis: That right. And you have to imagine, too, that Ericos is by no means the concrete catcher for years to come. He's definitely kind of just being given an opportunity. Scope, this is his final year. So, honestly, if Scope gets off to a hot start, which historically does not, he could get traded at the deadline if his team is a dumpster fire. so, yeah, again, a lot, it's going to rely on the bounce back. And it's hard for us right now to think positively because one, look at the roster, how can you blame us? Two, they made no moves this offseason. And three, ah, going off 2022 numbers and statistics, it was absolutely trash. So it's hard to get real jazz right now for Tigers baseball. but one other thing I want to point out too, real quick. I'm not saying that this is a huge thing because the shift going away and things and, going like that. But looking at the roster right now, there are no switch hitters on this team.Alex Freeman: No, it's also like it's also very righty. Righty. Heavy.Luke Jaconis: Yeah. It's I mean, just looking at the projected lineup and let's assume Kreidler wins the starting job out of Camp asses are righty. Pork scope. Abby fridler miggy. I mean, that leaves you, Riley Green, Badu and Meadows all bat and lefty. And then coming off the bench, Verling's, Arighty, Rogers are writing. Tyler Nevin, Donny Sands, justin harry Milloy. If they ever get called up. Both righties. I'm sure we're going to see some other guys throughout the season who kind of may, change that. But for what it's worth, victor Reyes, WILLOUGHLY Castro, Jamer candelario even captain Celery himself, tucker Barnhart could at least give you some different lineups that you could put into play being that they were switch hitters. is what it is. Did you see speaking of Captain Celery, he signed with the Cubs this offseason and recently, our guy, Michael Fulmer just signed with the Cubs, too. So congrats to him. Going to be pitching on the North Side this year. So best of luck, Mike.Alex Freeman: Yeah. I hope it's a good year for him. I like him. Yeah. M. I think that's my whole issue with this roster. I like all these guys.Luke Jaconis: huh.Alex Freeman: I don't really love it. Love any of them.Luke Jaconis: on my s**t list from last.Alex Freeman: Year, except for maybe Riley Grace, obviously. I'll put the caveat in here so that people don't yell at us in the comments. Miguel Cabrera is exempt from all of these conversations, because we love Miguel Cabrera and it is his final year, no questions asked. I want to see Miguel Cabrera in the lineup regularly. do I think that is the best thing for this team? No, I would love it to be, I would love the team to be in a situation where we're giving Miguel Cabrera at bats out of respect for his long career. Not that we need his bat in the lineup, but, I think we need his bat in the.Luke Jaconis: Lineup. One thing I would love to see for Miguel return this year, if kind of like how it happened with Albert Pooholz last year. I would love to see a power surge return for Miguel Cabrera. And I'm not saying because I think how many home runs did Albert end up hitting last year? Is anyone from, like, 18 to 20 ish in that ballpark? I don't think Miggy is there, but if Miggy could give us, like, a good ten to 13 home runs, like, just something like he had, like, four last year, the power I mean, all he did last year was hit singles, pretty much. So, I mean, I'm not even talking long ball, just, like, you know, maybe some more doubles, you know, hey, I would love to see Miguel Cabrera maybe hit one more triple. I don't know how many career triples he has, but I would love to I sure that would sure make me laugh, watching him run, going for a triple. And I feel at some point at time m yeah, miguel Cabrera, at one point in time, was going to go for a triple in his last year. And I think this also might be the first year we see Miguel Cabrera try to bump for a hit. Why not? What does he have to lose?Alex Freeman: Honestly, he's the fastest man in baseball. Luke.Luke Jaconis: It's true.Alex Freeman: And it's true. this is our moment for our annual miguel Cabrera is in the best shape of his life coming into camp. I can't wait.Luke Jaconis: soon we'll hear that. Soon we will hear that. one thing I wanted to talk about too, real quick, the one move we already kind of talked a little bit lineup wise. and the one move this offset I think that was the most intriguing giving Scott Harris credit was the trade, sending Gregory Soto and Cody Clemens to Philadelphia in returns, getting back Nick Mayton, Matt Veerling and Donny Sands. let's start with losing Gregory Soto. I'm okay with it. when Gregory Soto was on, he was on. Gregory Soto is just far too inconsistent that I'm comfortable with. Cody Clemens, for me, was kind of one of those Aloevila Prospect guys. I was like, it's Cody Clemens. I don't know where ever going to see him really do much. so I'm okay with that. And getting back three young, kind of versatile position players. I like that. And good speed. you have a potential catching process with Donny Sand. So that was the one moved this off season. I was like, okay, Scott Harris, I'm cool with this. I just wish he would have maybe made like two or three more moves, kind of, of that caliber, something along those lines. So I, guess he kind of did it with the Joe Jimenez trade as well, bringing in, Justin Henry Malloy. But it is what it is there. let's talk about rotation here for a little bit.Alex Freeman: If you're cool with it.Luke Jaconis: Let's get into the pitching side of things and that will transition us into bullpen. so I guess right now, starting pitcher opening day, unless things change at Juarez Rodriguez, I guess that's what we're thinking.Alex Freeman: yeah, that's what I would do.Luke Jaconis: From the projected rotations that I've been seeing just kind of posted throughout the internet, you, got, Erod, Matthew Boyd, Matt Manning, Michael Lorenz and Spencer Turnbull kind of R five heading into the season. Obviously things could change. Guys win jobs out of camp maybe. So that kind of puts like, what do you do with Bo Briskey? Joey wentz. Alex fayetto. I think you're definitely going to see whence in Fayetto, maybe even Brisket go to the bullpen. I, really would love to see Bo Briskey, get a shot at the starting rotation. I don't really know where he fits whose place he takes really, at this point, because all the five guys named at the top, those seem kind of like locks. I mean, obviously Boyd and Lorenz and they just signed those guys. Erod, definitely has, some money to make and he went through some personal issues last year, but really didn't get much of a Water Rodriguez last year. And Matt Manning is really one of the big three who's healthy right now. So with Scuba and Miso, I don't know where a guy like Briskey would fit in rotation wise. But there's a good chance you could see probably Brisky once in Fiato in the bullpen this year, especially because we've lost some arms, this offseason.Alex Freeman: Yeah, I don't disagree with anything that you just said there. I would be more excited about that rotation if I didn't have, the history with so many of these guys that we have, like, if they were fresh to the Tigers. Matt Boyd, erod Matt Manning. Obviously lots of life left in Matt Manning's career. Spencer Turnbull. I think my issue is that I look at it and I go, oh, we're going to really lean on Matt Manning, more than I want us to be leaning on him at this point in his career. Similarly, like if Borisky wins a spot in the rotation. we need Borisky to be truly worthy of that spot, more so than maybe he is at in career development.Luke Jaconis: Right. Well, also and this kind of is a given, but I would feel a lot better with this rotation if Terrick Scuba was at it. I'd feel a hell of a lot better. I'd be like, all right, if you take out Lorenz and you've got Scuba, or if you take out Boyd and you put in schools, like, all right, I'm kind of work with this, and we're going to get Scuba back sometime this season. So that is encouraging. MYS is probably done for the whole year, but they're saying, I think June for Scuba. If I were a betting man, I'd say we don't see Terror Scuba pitch until after the All Star break. I would agree with that. And at that point, depending where this team is in terms of contention, that also could be a factor as well. But, yeah, so I would feel a hell of better if Terry Scuba was in the starting rotation. That's kind of the understatement of the year. So let's transition to bullpen. So you lose last season. Michael Fulmer, you trade away this year. Joe Jimenez and Gregory Soto. Andrew, Chaffin declined his option, so he's currently a free agent. Maybe he comes back, maybe he doesn't. Maybe we get another bullpen edition sometime, between now and opening day. Here's where the bullpen currently stands, kind of from my perspective. So those three guys I just mentioned, Borisky, Joey once, Alex Fiato, you have to imagine they'll be incorporated in some capacity. Tyler Alexander and Ronnie Garcia both continue to just somehow, they always wind up back in the bullpen.Alex Freeman: Somehow.Luke Jaconis: Those guys, they're kind of like you said in the beginning of the show, it's like a dirty penny. Is that what you called me?Alex Freeman: It's a bad penny? It's a bad penny.Luke Jaconis: A bad penny.Alex Freeman: Sorry.Luke Jaconis: A dirty penny. A dirty penny. It's a dirty, gross, stinky penny that's been caught in couch cushions for many years. And then you're kind of going to look at more of the core, I think, of this bullpen, which is going to be Will Vest, Jason Foley, Jose Cisnero, and the guy who I think is going to be the closer come opening day, alex Lang, which I'm excited for that for. I think Alex Lang has some really nasty stuff, and I think he's earned, depending on how his camp goes this year. I would be more than happy to give him the reins as the closer.Alex Freeman: Yeah. I would also like to see AJ. Has sort of gone away from that traditional closer mentality, and just thinking about high leverage spots. not that loving a closer is necessarily a traditionalist standpoint, but I do think that there is something to be said of, like, this guy's got the 9th, and being able to mentally prepare for that as the guy. I would like to see that a little bit more consistently and, kind of build somebody into that spot, because we've watched our bullpen blow enough leads, throughout our life that it'd be nice to well, it was funny.Luke Jaconis: We actually, for a year and a half or two years there, actually had a pretty decent little bullpen. And now it's like, oh, boy, are we going back to are we going back to that 2018, 2019 years prior Tigers bullpen? I guess time will tell. I mean, look, if Lange pitches like Lang has these last few seasons and Cisnero does as well, we'll vest fully. You incorporate some of these young arms, brisky, Fiato, wentz, et cetera, at Garrett Hill, obviously under the tutelage of Chris Federer, who we think is a godsend, for the Detroit Tigers. I'm still pretty confident with the Tigers both. And if you said the three things right now, from lineup, starting rotation and Bulkin that I'm most confident in, I'm still going to say it's the Bolton at this point, which I can't believe I'm saying that heading into, ah, another Tiger season. But here we are.Alex Freeman: Yeah, it's interesting as we continue to have this conversation about the overall roster. Right. I'm still not excited about any single portion of this roster, but I'm not uncomfortable with the bullpen. I'm not uncomfortable with the starting rotation. I wish it were better. I wish there was obviously not Shirzer specifically, but a guy like Scherzer that I was like, let's go. I am not missing a single start that this guy pitches. to talk about the lineup, we also have to remember and keep in mind as we go into this season, we have a whole new hitting staff, that we know that's been probably the central problem of the last two seasons is that this team has not been able to hit. That is maybe the biggest question mark of my excitement, I guess, is that, okay, what are we going to start to see in spring training that tells us that, okay, yeah, it was the hitting staff more than it was the guys in the roster. And I think we got a glimpse of that a little bit with Robbie Grossman when he went to the Braves. of like, oh, yeah, here's a minor adjustment to make. And now you're the Robbie Grossman that the Tigers wanted when we signed you.Luke Jaconis: Yeah, I think that's valid. See what this new hitting staff does bring to the table. I can't stop thinking about that April schedule for every second I kind of get. All right, well, maybe this kind of piece is intriguing. This is intriguing. This guy's young. Let's see if this guy has a bounce back. I just think, like, how is this team that doesn't even have a legit third base right now supposed to compete with tampa and Houston. And I can't believe I'm m saying this, but Baltimore, the Mets in May, those teams I just mentioned, Toronto, I'll throw them in there as well. Those are juggernaut teams. Well, maybe Baltimore is maybe not a juggernaut team, but they were definitely a fun team to watch last year. I think they're going to be good this year. But like, the Toronto's, the Houston, the Tampas, the Mets, the Cargoes, those are juggernaut teams. And it's like mind boggling that we're going to have to compete against them. It's like, oh, s**t, we don't even have a third.Alex Freeman: Baseman.Luke Jaconis: We don't know what's going on. One of our best players is a 40 year old who really only hit singles at this point in his career. When I think of stuff like that, I'm like, oh yeah, this is the team that's going to barely win 50 games this year. and then I think even getting to a, record like Fang Grass had a 71 and 91, that feels like, impossible. But stranger things have happened. And like I said, at the very top of the show, not to be Captain Cliche, but if some guys have some bounce backs, and if some guys play like we think they're capable of, and if Hobby Bias is in a complete liability, it's shortstop defensively. And if the Angels win the pennant and Joseph Gordon Levitt's dad comes back, you just never know what could happen, I guess. But I'm not holding my breath on that team.Alex Freeman: We're so beaten down as fans that we're like 70. one and 91. That's a bit of a stretch. Could it happen? though, but if some things bounce the right way, it could be 20 games under 500.Luke Jaconis: Yeah. Right now, I'm not doing an official projection yet, but my number right now is like, the Tigers win like six games in the month of.Alex Freeman: April. All right, this is going to bring us to, not a new segment of the show, but another one of our new standardized segments where, I'm going to talk about some stats and or trivia as we go into this. And I'm going to quiz Luke. But, first a little music drop.Luke Jaconis: I like your theme music, too.Alex Freeman: Isn't that nice?Luke Jaconis: Yeah, good stuff. I would have preferred it was a little bit more like the first season of Boy Meets World. The, intro.Alex Freeman: Music. Look, if you if you got any further, we would have owed Disney $4,000. So I'm glad you said I know.Luke Jaconis: Go ahead, Mr. Feeney.Alex Freeman: Okay. Luke, Google is trying.Luke Jaconis: To google wants to get in on the action.Alex Freeman: Google wants in, the, 122 year history of the Detroit Tigers. How many times have they made the playoffs? Oh.Luke Jaconis: God. I'll just try to do the years. I know they made the playoffs. All right, so 611, 12, 13, 14. That's five. The roar of 84.Alex Freeman: That's. At least six.Luke Jaconis: I think they won in the 60s. They won four World Series. Not mistaken.Alex Freeman: That is correct.Luke Jaconis: That puts us at least all right, I'm going to say 122 years.Alex Freeman: You said. Yes.Luke Jaconis: All right, give me a little no. I'm going to throw out a number, then I'll ask for a hand. I'm going to say they've made the playoffs. Let's see here. 23 times.Alex Freeman: That is too high.Luke Jaconis: Okay. I'm trying to think, like, the early 19 hundreds, maybe. So are we in the teens?Alex Freeman: I'm guessing we are in the teens. Okay.Luke Jaconis: I'm, going to say 14.Alex Freeman: Very close. It is 16 times the Detroit Tigers have made the playoffs. How many times have they then made it to the World Series? Oh, God. Now, in some of these scenarios, right. in the early years of Major League Baseball that was making the playoffs. Yeah, we went to the World Series.Luke Jaconis: Well, they got four World Series, and they lost twice in six and twelve. So that at least puts it six right there. And I'll tack on a couple more in the early days. So let's say out of the 16 times they made the playoffs, I'm going to say they've gone into World Series nine times.Alex Freeman: Very close again. Eleven times.Luke Jaconis: Oh, that's my number.Alex Freeman: Eleven. Damn it. Which, I mean, not a bad play off record. if you've made it 16 times, you go to the World Series eleven times, but like them to perform better in the World Series and have more than four. Yeah.Luke Jaconis: So because that means four for yeah. Four for eleven in the World Series. That's not great.Alex Freeman: when was the last time the Detroit Tigers won a playoff series?Luke Jaconis: Won a playoff series? Yeah. 2013.Alex Freeman: That is correct. Against who?Luke Jaconis: was that against the Oakland Athletics?Alex Freeman: It was tom, please stop yelling at your radio.Luke Jaconis: Suck at souls.Alex Freeman: And then, obviously, they made the playoffs in 2014, but lost to the Baltimore Orioles in the divisional series. those are my numbers for today. Just to kind of like I like them. Yeah. I mean, less than 10% of the time, the Detroit Tigers have made the playoffs. Would love to see that ah. Be different.Luke Jaconis: I have a quick one for you. I'm going to throw a quiz right back to you.Alex Freeman: I love it.Luke Jaconis: Mr. Phoenix. Every week, every episode, I'm going to give you an obscure Tigers player question and see if you can get it. Who was the Tigers starting catcher going into the 2009 season? 2009. I could totally be wrong on this, but I remember I'm pretty sure he was the.Alex Freeman: Guy. I have three different guys in my head, but I think I'm dancing around and I actually don't think it's any.Luke Jaconis: Single one of them.Alex Freeman: Okay. it's too early for.Luke Jaconis: Avila. I think that was his debut year, for what it's worth, if I'm not mistaken, the nine or ten he debuted, actually. No, it was 2009. That was his debut.Alex Freeman: I remember it's not McCann, I'm not mistaken. Yeah.Luke Jaconis: Not McCam.Alex Freeman: Pudge was gone by then, but yeah, Pudge was gone. Who was it?Luke Jaconis: The answer we're looking for number eight, gerald Laird.Alex Freeman: Gerald Laird or Jerry Laird?Luke Jaconis: All right, we'll try again next week with you. But Gerald Laird. Yeah, the more, you.Alex Freeman: Know, shout.Luke Jaconis: Out to Gerald Laird, man.Alex Freeman: Shout out to Gerald Laird.Luke Jaconis: Also forgotten.Alex Freeman: Yeah, because obviously then we had Avila and so why would we need Laird.Luke Jaconis: When you have layered came back off. He backed up one season. I want to say maybe it was in 2012 he backed up or 2011, one of the two. I don't remember. But he came back as a backup one year as well.Alex Freeman: Well, Luke, I think that's going to be back, baby. This episode. We are back. any closing thoughts before we depart?Luke Jaconis: No, I'm really excited, to get to do another season with you. I feel like towards the end of last season, and I don't know if you've ever said this, we both were kind of like the rain, just talking about the team. I think that also kind of shows with our lack of recordings we did in the offseason, but also, like, really.Alex Freeman: Took an off season.Luke Jaconis: We did one episode in the off season. We really needed to take a break, at least I know I did, from Tigers baseball and just other things were going on in life and we had other things we were doing. But, yeah, as we do this, it gets me excited and I know I'm going to be burnt again, I'm going to be let down again. That's kind of how it is to be a Tigers fan. But at least I have you here to join me in the misery every couple of weeks. So I look forward to that. And thank you to all of our, listeners and our watchers and people get to interact with us on Twitter. you know, they're always a lot of fun. So it's exciting. And here we are, season four as they sit on that episode of Hot, ones with Paul Rudd. Look at us. Who would have thought it?Alex Freeman: Not me. Not me. All right, Luke, we'll talk soon. Have a good one. See. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit michiganandtrumbull.substack.com

This is a Monthly Subscription ~ Details HERE  I have decided to share the March & April Venus Circle REPLAYS because these energies are affecting everyone and I am getting more requests for clarity on the current energies and how they are affecting our Relationships & Finances specifically. The last time we encountered this energy & cycle was during the years:  2012-2014 and before that, 2002-2005 so familiar themes may be circling back in your own life. Below, you will find an Overview of this month's class and you are welcome to Subscribe or DropIN for $25/mo anytime you would like to check-in with your own Values & Priorities.Venus Circle Details HERE  MARCH 2022 ~ AQUARIUS/Sacral/Release:This month is about clearing any attachments to old relationships or creative projects. We are reviewing all our creations over the last 18-months -to- 8-years and letting go of anything that holds no more joy, vitality, magic, essence or chi. If there is any vitality left in certain creative projects, then this clearing will serve them like a pruning that allows a plant to grow better. Because this activation is in Aquarius, it is all about your unique contribution to the community, as well as your individuality and freedom to be yourself within the context of any partnerships or collaborations. We have to look at where the flow is stagnated, where your nature has been stifled and where you have limited your own vision because of dogmatic beliefs, limited thinking & narrow-mindedness. It's time to address the   issue of being overly committed to the world or community, to the neglect of Self or family. Often, we ignore others or neglect our own personal needs because they are mundane and not deemed as vital or important as the life & death struggles of humanity, climate change or any of the bigger issues.        Gambler asks you to see where you've grown complacent, forgotten your purpose or lost the vision for your life. Often, we take the easy, familiar Path thinking that we will avoid trouble or find a shortcut but, all it ends up doing is delaying our good and making our lessons more painful & unnecessarily long. Look at where you have let your impatience get the best of you, especially when you really wanted something. This Archetype reveals your inherent selfishness & narcissism because you fail to consider the consequences of your choices (or lack thereof). Once in a while, a “gamble” will pay off, but you have to recognize that it wasn't “your power” but more of a convergence of alignments that had to   happen to make that possible in the first place. That's not an easy way to live. The Shadow Work of this Archetype is to dig deeper for your sense commitment & dedication.       This month will re-set the connection to your Emotional Body & Sacral Chakra, clearing and  releasing any blockages to natural flow, creativity and your gut instincts. You cannot do the same-old/same-old routines, or foods, or practices and expect new & different results. You are creating deeper, stronger connections to your own natural rhythms and innate knowing, as well as expanding your   consciousness with every step of the journey. Use this month to get creative around your Release Work, revive some old ideas that still show promise, clear anything blocking your Heart from feeling joy,  gratitude & love and release any saltwater tears to cleanse the past completely. Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=38CSXPQMC5TNE)

[00:03:54] With that important business behind us. Let's dive right in to this week's interview. Brian. Welcome to the show. [00:04:01] Brian McCulloch: Oh, thank you, Craig. I'm really excited to be here. So a man. [00:04:05] Craig Dalton: Yeah, let's do this. I was thinking for a while that I really wanted to do a show. That got people pumped for the moment they get to the start line. We've talked a lot on other episodes about nutrition and the idea of coaching, but there's something to be said for just getting the right mindset, getting everything into your rear view mirror, and being ready to do a big event, whether you're going for the win or just trying to finish and have fun. [00:04:31] It's important to have the right mental mindset. And I couldn't think of someone better to come on and talk about that than. [00:04:38] Brian McCulloch: Oh thank you, Craig. Thank you. I'm really excited about it. It's such a, I think it's such an overlooked topic. When we talk about obviously as a cycling coach, but also as an athlete, it's so easy to just look at all of the preparation and we look at all the time, money and effort, the blood, sweat, and tears that we put in to preparation, but then we often forget or neglect that race. [00:05:00] Is everything. And it's not, it doesn't have to be a race. If you're not at the front of these gravel races, that doesn't mean it's anything different. It's your tour de France. And this is what my wife and I, we have a coaching business, big role coaching, and we always look at it like, Hey, what is your tour de France? [00:05:14] Yeah, it can be the one ARIDE at BWR, Kansas, or it can be gravel worlds. It can be anything in between. Okay. So you don't have to be riding a long race or be at the front of it for you to actually spend some time plan out your pacing. Think about your nutrition, go over the course, look at all those things and know we're going to get into so much of that. [00:05:32] But having your best race day performance is not always about what's the motor you brought to the start line. It's what about the check? What about the mindset, all of these other things. So I'm really excited to have this conversation. [00:05:44] Craig Dalton: Yeah. Also true. And I always like to set the stage for the listener and just learn a little bit about your journey. Obviously like the notion of riding a gravel bike is something relatively new in the world of cycling, but how what's your journey as a cyclist? How did you come to be where you are to. [00:06:02] Brian McCulloch: Oh, that's a great question. I I should tell everyone that I used to race motorcycles or motocross and Supercross professionally. And so that was I didn't know it at the time, but that was going to be like going to the dirt on gravel. And even now mountain biking, a little bit more is going to be like, to me, it feels like coming home. [00:06:17] But yeah, when I was basically, when I went. 12 years old, I got a dirt bike and was like, oh my God, I want to be professional. And then I just poured myself into that. And long story short was my father was a big influencer there. And he was like, Hey man, as long as you get good grades, we'll take care of it. [00:06:33] Like you're good to go. And anyway, somewhere along the way, I ended up stepping away from that and thinking I had this boy in my life where I. I didn't have any athletics in my life. It was about a year that I got out of motorcycle racing and I thought I'm washed up. Like I was never, I never achieved my goals, really et cetera, et cetera. [00:06:51] And then someone reminded me that we used to. [00:06:54] train on road bikes and mountain bikes for For motorcycle and racing. And so I was like, oh, okay, cool. I'll check that out. And I went on a group ride with some friends and in the area that I'm from or where I live now in the Redlands area here in Southern California, there was this really robust community of cyclists. [00:07:13] And they went on this, they still do. They go on this Saturday group rides called rain cross. They've been doing it for 30 years on the same route. You know what I mean? So there's like all this heritage and I just became. Totally enthralled and met some really good people. All of them were, 35 to 40 when I was 25 and I was totally hooked. [00:07:29] So got into the. Started racing almost Right. [00:07:32] away. And then it was like, wow. It's like riding a bicycle is great because it's work in equals results out. So I just poured myself into it. Like I did when I was trying to be a professional motorcycle racer ended up getting my category one road up. Got a call from Paul Abrahams who was starting this team that would later develop into elevate Webby, Plex pro cycling. [00:07:53] And I was the first person that signed for him. So I did 11 years racing pro on the road which I'm really humbled to. That's one of the longest careers in American cycling, which is pretty cool. There's definitely some people like Mike Friedman and Brad Huff and other people who've had really long careers as well. Those are good company. If anyone knows those guys there, they're pretty legendary and I'm by no means on their S their level. But anyway, in 2018 actually in 2017 funny story, how I came to gravel was I did we were supposed to go to the tour of the Heela that year and that coincided with 20 $17 and waffle ride. [00:08:27] And I didn't make selection for that team. And at the time Paul Abraham's, my team director was like, Hey, bro, don't take it personal. We just have more we don't have a GC guy this year, so we don't need a domestic cause I was a domestique on the team and that's a really hard race it's for climbing. [00:08:45] And I'm not a very good climate. So my team manager was like, don't take it personal dude. Like we're not going to take you to Hilo because we don't have a GC guy we're just going for stage wins. So we don't really need you right now. Like we're going to take our time. And I was like, I was so bummed, Craig. [00:09:01] I was so bummed because like that's one of those events. If you're a road guy and you say, oh Yeah. I've done this many tours, ILA. Everyone's dude, you're gnarly. And so I didn't get to go. And I be honest, I had a chip on my shoulder cause I was like, oh, I'll show you, I'll show you. And I'd be willing to bet your listeners have a bit of that in them too. [00:09:17] You know what I mean? They're like, oh, somebody said you can't climb that hill. We'll Washoe you. And so I literally, that was. Like reached out to the guys from Belgian waffle ride who run it and they were like, please come. And I ended up going down there. I ended up crashing and breaking my hand. [00:09:31] But I finished the race and I ended up winning the KLM Jersey that year and that Belgian waffle ride. And I just, I like fell in love with it, man, because it was old school, dirt bike, grit, like dirt bike riding. You have to you're the dude that finishes like no one No one in my once you're out on course, it's just you, right? [00:09:49] There's no mechanic. There's no none of this stuff. And so you have to have the grit and the determination to finish. And so when I crashed and broke my hand, I was like, I'm an 80 miles. What am I going to do? Call my wife. She doesn't care. She's you got out there, you get back. And so I'm not I'm a proud man. So I'm like, I'll finish. And I finished and kept passing people. And I think I got like top 10. Anyway. But. That brought me that made me fall in love with BWR and being able to have breakfast with everybody, go do this incredibly crazy ride and then get into go after and share all the experiences afterwards. [00:10:22] So anyway, I came back in 2018 and I told the team I'm not going to heal it. I'm going to BWR. And anyway, I went to VWR in 2018 in San Diego, and I ended up winning at beating Ted king in a sprint. And that's a pretty cool story how that all came together. But then that got me. And we don't have that much gravel in dedicated gravel in California. [00:10:41] It's not like the Midwest and back east, which just has such crazy robust swath of events that are so cruel. So when we go to do it, we have to travel a bit. But it's such a big part of my program right now. And I'm so thankful for it. It's such a great group of people. So I hope that's a long story, but that's kinda how I got into gravel. [00:10:58] And I'm like, I want to be in it all the time. [00:11:00] Craig Dalton: Yeah. As you were telling that story and talking about, your accomplishment of achieving an 11 year professional cycling career, I was thinking to myself Brian, you haven't exactly hung up your cleats just yet. Have you. [00:11:11] Brian McCulloch: No, not at all. And somewhere along there your. The gravel ride podcast listeners. I'm sure you all know of Neil Shirley. Neil Shirley is absolutely legendary. Like I joked him cause a good buddy of mine, but I, we call them the, grab the prophet, right? Like he, he, so you gotta think of set the stage a little bit of history because history is important to me. [00:11:30] Basically what happened was at the time. He, and I went on a bike ride one day and he was like, Hey, I got some news. I'm going to quit racing pro. And I was like, oh my God that's super exciting, but I'm like, how are you feeling? Anyway he was like, Yeah. I'm going to work for road bike action magazine. [00:11:44] So he goes to road bike action magazine. As this event, as gravel is becoming a thing. Like at that time there were no gravel bikes. They were like rode bikes or it was just weird kind of time, right? Especially on the west coast, east coast had some more than what Midwest has more Frank and bike things going. [00:12:01] Long story short is he goes there to road bike action. And he just is like on the nose cone of this rocket and starts riding up. He goes to Belgium waffle ride. I think he's one of three times. I can't remember. But anyway, he's a dear friend of mine. He was at my wedding. And so he was like, Hey dumb I should back up. [00:12:17] He was my coach for 10 years as well. So all the time when I was racing road, he was my coach and he was like, dude, you have to come to a gravel ride. And so he had this, his own event called pedal Palooza one year and I went there on this rickety, old something or other with. Ghetto tubeless with duct tape for in strip and not even tubeless tires that I somehow got to seat and I got obliterated, but had a blast. [00:12:40] But anyway, so the point is like this whole thing is so new. And so to come to it and have all of this Just incredible history behind it and then be able to then see like people that have this great history or like foundation of it, like Neal and then have their support and like to be now here now where it looks like. [00:13:00] You could do a gravel ride every weekend. And they're just like some of the most epic adventures you can have on a bicycle is pretty incredible, man. So it was a, oh, I, the reason I brought this up was because he told me I should at some point be a coach. And I thought he was crazy. And here we are now I've worked for my wife. [00:13:15] Who's our head coach. And we're coaching. Like we have a very successful coaching business. I'm very thankful for the athletes that we get to support along the way. So it's yeah, it's our world, man. We're just, we're pretty detailed. [00:13:25] Craig Dalton: Yeah. I love hearing about that journey and excited to get into sort of some of the things we opened up with around. How do you approach what I call game day when you show up on that start line and, with gravel, as you've just been describing in your journey, like so many of these events have such a different profile and a lot of times. [00:13:44] These athletes, myself included. It may be the first time we're visiting an area and we're doing a 100 mile event. Let's talk through, if in that scenario where you're going somewhere, you haven't been before, what are the things you can do from a research perspective, set aside the specific training advice for a second, but what would some of the research and prep you can do if you're going to do an Unbound for the first time or an SBT? [00:14:09] Brian McCulloch: Oh, that's a great question, buddy. I think that research and preparation, excuse me. I think research and preparation. So key to what we do. And it's just, it's the absolute game changer because once you're on game day, once you're on the starting line, there's nothing else, but just grit, determination, and good nutrition and hydration. [00:14:29] That's going to get you through the day, right? Like you got what you got, but leading up to. Th our destiny is in our hands. Okay. And save for the specific training and looking all that. But I think YouTube is a wonderful resource. And so is Strava. And I know a lot of your listeners, a lot of our listeners, they are always like, Hey, there, they're researching and delving into this trouble. [00:14:47] So if you're going to do something like SBT, you can look at. The people that are doing well, what that course looks like, where are the Hills? Where are the aid stations? Where are you going to stop all these other things that are really important? Because here's, I'll give you an example, Craig. If you were to go to an event that said had 7,000 feet of climbing, and it was a hundred miles, that sounds like a pretty hard ride. But what if that 7,000 feet is in the first half of the bike race, right? So think about something like crusher. Like you have an hour and a half Kline. That's it like you just go uphill and you don't stop. Like you just keep going up. [00:15:24] That's a very different look, especially if you're from the Midwest and you're training for something like that. That's a very different way to get 7,000 feet. Then if you were to say, go to Unbound right at, on mound it's death by 1,019. Right or pinpricks. But what you don't realize is each of those little things has a 14% kick at the top. [00:15:43] So you're like, oh it's not that big of a deal. It's only a three-minute climb. When you go try and sprint 300 times up a 200 mile, oh, I'm only going to do the hundred and Unbound doesn't matter. You're going to go up a hundred little, three minute climbs triangle sprint for a hundred times for three minutes. [00:15:59] It's very turns out it's very difficult. So I think it's really important to recognize. What I call the critical factors are the critical elements the critical moments of an event. Okay. So what are those critical moments like? Oh, okay. I've got an hour and a half climb. There you go. Or, Hey, I have a hundred of these really challenging areas or, oh, Hey, there's this single track section say you're going to go to BWR Cedar city, right? [00:16:23] That final format. Single-track called the tollway is Uber brutal and you have to build a bike around that final four miles, much more than you have to build a bike for the first 120. You see what I'm saying? Totally different because those rocks are super sharp. They're super brutal. So you could be lulled into the idea that, Hey, wait a second. [00:16:45] My race performance is best done on a semi road bike with some facts. And then you get to that section and then you're walking four miles. You want to not have fun on the day walk four miles. That's no fun. So that's what I would say is. It really helpful is do your research, look at Strava, look at YouTube watch videos of things. [00:17:05] And that's why I did before Belgium waffle ride, I did a race series. We called it slang the sector. So if any of your athletes or listeners want to check it out, we did a sleigh the sector series on basically some of the most difficult and challenging. Pieces of Belgian waffle ride San Diego. And my hope was that people would watch it and go, Hey, that's action. [00:17:24] I got it. That's action. Okay. Wait, that's a little outside of my wheelhouse, so they know. Okay. At mile 67, this thing's a little outside, my wheelhouse, slow down, get through it and then press on after that. So I think a lot of that stuff, it can be super, super helpful. We have a lot of great resources that we just didn't have 10 years ago. [00:17:41] Craig Dalton: Yeah. [00:17:41] that was a great series. I think at the basic level, when you sign up for an event, you start, you'd look at the course profile and start to understand, is this similar to what I ride at home? Can I simulate some of these efforts? Can I find an hour and a half climb, like crusher in the title? [00:17:56] Certainly many people can't but understanding how you can simulate it to the best of your possibilities in your home territory is critical. And then as you said, that next level of, Hey, if there is course beta out there, it's amazing to just get eyeballs on it, to say oh crap, I've never written through rocks like that. [00:18:14] I really need to at least be mentally prepared for it. If I can't physically prepare for it in my local. [00:18:21] Brian McCulloch: Oh, absolutely. And even with a trainer now you can do so much. Okay. And by the way, I'm not a massive fan of doing all your workouts on trainers. Like I, I think being outside in the real world is absolutely the thing to do. That's why we love. But I, again, we have folks that just, they have busy lives. If you listening have busy lives and you're on the train, especially going into winter. [00:18:44] And you're going to be on the trainer four or five days a week. There's guys that I coach in the Midwest right now that they're getting ready to be like, oh Yeah. [00:18:51] I'm not going to go outside for two months straight. If that's your jam, Use your trainer and simulate this stuff. You can go up the outdoors with, you can do any of these things, right? [00:19:00] You can use Ruby. You don't have to be a slave to swift. You can use Ruby, you can do a lot of these other things that can help you achieve that. Like old school was, I met a woman when I was very early in my bike riding career who literally trained for an iron man. 100% inside. She had just had a child. [00:19:18] She did all for running on a trip. She did all of her swimming at the local pool. And it was an open water swim that she did. And she did all of her riding on her trainer. She literally did not go outside, get a full distance iron man all off of it. And this was 10. It's probably 15 years ago. [00:19:32] No, it's gotta be longer than that. It's probably almost 20 years ago now. Gosh, I'm old, but. That was back then. We didn't have smart trainers. She was just staring at the wall for five-hour trainer guys. Like folks, it can be done if you are determined and you have fire in your belly and you are really committed to being prepared for this event, there's a lot of tools you have to get through it. [00:19:49] And and believe that. You are mentally stronger than you think you are physically stronger than you think you are capable of so much. And that's something I love as a coach is helping tease that out of people because you put them in the environment and they have to rise to the occasion, right? So I'm not saying don't set yourself up for success and, or show up unprepared. [00:20:10] That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is let's set goals that really challenge you and stretch you so that you can achieve. These great things, because once you're there, you've got nothing it's sink or swim. And if you're like me and I know you listeners are like me, because I'm an athlete and a coach, you're like, I didn't come this far to sink. [00:20:27] Like I got no other option than to swim and you can do it. So to some degree, we work really well in that environment too, where it's I sink or swim. I have no option. Because I'm not going to sink. I'm not going to quit, but I'm going to keep moving. [00:20:39] Craig Dalton: Yeah, I think it's so critical in these ultra endurance kind of style gravel events that you have that grit and determination that you mentioned earlier, because the truth is for anybody who hasn't done a big event or a massive long ride, something will go wrong. Period. It's highly unlikely. And if you track the first men and women or last everybody's on a journey, and it's the people who understand that. [00:21:04] Flat tires are going to happen. Mechanical is going to happen. Hell you, you can have big hiccups in your hydration and nutrition plan as well, but it's your ability to push through those adapt recover, make adjustments. That's going to be a telltale sign of success. [00:21:20] Brian McCulloch: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. Something that I think is really a good. Metaphor here. So if you think of like special forces, right? There's obviously been a lot in the news over the last number of years about Navy seals and other, Rangers, Delta force, these kinds of, they train them to be extremely self-sufficient. [00:21:38] And I think that is something that's so powerful for us as athletes to think we are much more like them than we are say like a V like a Marine infantry unit or something like that. And so they are, thanks for everyone who's listening. Who served? You guys are wonderful. Guys and gals, of course. [00:21:54] But when I look at this. Who we are as athletes, we have to be generalists. It's not like you're on the NFL defensive line and you don't care about catching a past. Cause all you're trying to do is stop the refrigerator in front of you from coming through you, right? That's what you do. [00:22:09] If you're on the offensive line, it's a very specific task and requires a very specific training. For that, if you're going to go do SBT, if you're going to go to a BWR, you have to be able to do it all. You there's no time out if on the client, right? There's no time out on the downhill. You have to be able to ride that bike and the technical stuff. [00:22:29] If you get a flat tire, you have to change it. Especially if you're going to do something, self-supported say Unbound, right? There's no support. So if you don't know how to use that Dyna plug that you. Uh, problem. You have to be able to do all these things. So again, one thing that I would say is so important for your listeners and for everyone listening to just get a grip on is everyone has good moments and everyone has bad moments and here's the thing, neither of them will last. [00:22:55] So when you're a ride in the high and you're like, man, I feel really. I don't, it's not going to last you're going to go through a bad moment. But then also correspondingly, you would be like, oh, Hey, I feel really awful. And my quad is cramping or my feet are numb, whatever that will end to it might end at the finish line, by the way, it might it might be bad all the way to the finish line, but it will end up promise you. [00:23:16] And so that just should bring you some sort of just comfort and recognize that like you're in control of this. And one thing that I would say. For our listeners and everyone who's just okay. Some of how do you eat an elephant? You look at SBT or you look at, all these massive events. [00:23:32] How do you accomplish that? It's so massive range. Just say one bite at a time. That's how you eat an elephant. And so one thing I would say is let's keep it simple and recognize some of this just boils down to the first rule of endurance events, whether you're a runner, whether you're psychos, whether you're mountain biker, graveled person, whatever, it doesn't matter. [00:23:50] You don't have to move fast, but you do have to keep moving. So sometimes slowing down is better because what we're trying to do is get through the end of the race. So if you're in a bad moment, the default should not be, Hey, I just plow through and just hope it ends. Cause you could make it worse. [00:24:07] You really could make it worse, but you certainly should like, just keep moving. If you. You just have to keep moving. That's so important for our athletes is just recognizing that movement even slow is still forward. Progress. Baby steps still make it. [00:24:22] Craig Dalton: Absolutely. So we talked about prepping and understanding the course that you're going into, obviously making sure that your gear is performing well, you're not coming on old tires or something that's going to unnecessarily cause you trouble. You've got to have your repair kit built out. [00:24:38] If you get a flat, where your Dyna plug is, you can pop it in there. Hopefully you can recover quickly. And to the last point of our conversation, just be mentally aware that these things are gonna happen. So don't stress. Like it's going to happen to 20% of the people in the event. So just move through it, keep a positive attitude and always keep moving through. [00:24:58] When you're looking, I did want to touch on planning from a nutrition and hydration perspective, just at a general level. When you look at a course, maybe like crushing the Tasha or something that has a very pronounced climbing feature, that's going to be a huge chunk of time. How are you thinking about nutrition and hydration and making sure you're staying on top of. [00:25:20] Brian McCulloch: love to look at the course profile. And this is just some of my stuff that I share with our athletes is I don't like people to stop at the bottom of the. Okay. Old school back before there were gravel events, we had all these, centuries and grand fondos before they read the grand fondos they were 200 mile rides or whatever. [00:25:39] And notorious, like it would always be that there would be at the bottom of the climb would be like, Hey, we have chocolate covered bacon and everyone would be like brilliant pulling over. And then they be trying to start the climb basically fully loaded and with a gut bomb. Okay. I think obviously when we're talking about, say crusher and Tuscher, you're going to have to stop at some point, if at all, possible, try to make your stops plan your stops so that you're stopping at the top of climbs. [00:26:06] Okay. I think that's the best thing to do stopping at the bottom. Client of climbs kills your momentum. Okay. I like to build a plan. Based on building and maintaining momentum. Okay. Because gravel riding as a whole and even bicycle riding as a whole is essentially boils down to building momentum, maintaining momentum, and then when you lose it, repeat, okay. [00:26:29] So there's features all along the way, whether they're Hills, whether they're rocks, whether it's single track that loses your momentum. And so part of that mental. Fortitude is being like, oh, okay. I got into the single track and I went really slow. Cause I don't really feel that comfortable and it drops on my bike. [00:26:46] So I just went really slow. I come out of it. Now I've got a road section I'm going to build momentum again, go through. So again, if we're going to talk about. As much as you can try and start at the top, if we're going to, or excuse me, stop at the top. Or just don't stop at the bottom. It's probably the best thing to take from our conversation. [00:27:04] And the other thing that I would say is based on the amount of climbing, you might have to re adjust or rethink what your nutrition strategy is. Why do I say that? Okay. So back in 2017, I did the tour of Utah for the first time. And. Once I got into breakaway on stage one and I was in the breakaway for about four and a half hours. [00:27:23] But, so we're going super hard for four and a half hours. And it started with a 90 minute climb, straight up, straight out of the gate. Okay. And the breakaway went about 45 minutes into it. So I still have 45 minutes climbing, at threshold you can't eat solid. Okay. So I'm not telling you that as a coach and saying, Hey, I read this data where you can't eat solid foods. [00:27:42] I'm telling you that. Cause like I've had my heart in my throat for an hour and a half, and then you're like, okay. Like the only thing I can do is have liquid options. Okay. And there's lots of great companies that are coming out with liquid option or semi-solid right. Whether that's a gel or something like that. [00:27:58] So I don't have an ax to grind and with any particular nutrition company, cause there's lots of great ones out there, but what I would say. If you're going to be on a long climb, if you're going to be on sustained climbing please consider getting your nutrition from liquid sources, because that allows you to work harder on the climb. [00:28:16] If you then have some solid food, say at the bottom, even if it's solid food, you packed and you're, Hey, Brian, I kept moving, but then you ate 250 300 calories in solid food because you brought an Uncrustable or you made a an energy bar or something. That is going to take away from your ability to ascend the mountain at a rapid pace. [00:28:35] Okay. And I'm not saying you've got to go bananas on the climb, but you don't want to do anything that pro that makes it worse. So as much as you can, if you look at the clients and their sustained climbs, you're probably going to want to opt for that period only of your bike. You're going to have to think I'm want more liquid sources of energy. [00:28:53] Okay. So then we come to oh, there's a downhill. That might be the time when you supplement with solids. So it's not as easy as the old school. Craig, when you got into it, it's Hey, every hour drink a water bottle, Hey, every hour eat 250 calories. So it's people would set timers on their garments or their walkthroughs. [00:29:09] And an hour, I just, crammed back a cliff bar. That's not how we do it anymore. Or, we're very specific with our nutrition. And not just the kind of nutrition, but it's the style of nutrition. Okay. So it's I have liquid sources for this portion of the race I have, and those could be gels, or those could be semi sellers, like a product that I really is infinite tripwire we used to be sponsored by them years ago on the road race team. [00:29:31] And I just buy retail. Like I just buy from my local shop. Cause it works good. But anyway try some stuff like that allows you to. Maintain a high output without upsetting your stomach. [00:29:40] Craig Dalton: Yeah. I think when you look at those course profiles, not only is it climbing and descending, but oftentimes it's technical terrain where you can't pull your hand off the bar. So having an understanding of, when you're unlikely to be able to hydrate are unlikely to be able. And making sure you're not dropping behind the eight ball during those periods, I think is one of those things that you need to learn as a gravel athlete. [00:30:02] And, in some cases it may, you might have to do the unthinkable and wear a hydration pack on your back. I know aesthetically, some people don't like that, but it's very practical in certain situations. And I will tell you that, if you're in rough terrain and you've got that tube available to you, you do have the opportunity to be hydrated. [00:30:18] Versus if you're trying to grab that. [00:30:21] Brian McCulloch: Spot on buddy. Spot on. I'm going to tell you a real an anecdotal story here. I there's a gentleman that I've coached for about four years and he does Leadville every year. Okay. So same genre of what we're doing, right? Uber. Kind of event. And even though Leadville is not known as the most technical course, it's still very challenging, very bumpy. [00:30:39] So it makes it very difficult to get into your pockets this year. I, he and I went back and forth, cause again, aesthetically you're like, I don't want to pack and I am much more I don't care. I just want pre. I'll put it, I'll put a bento box on the front of my bike. I'll wear cargo shorts. [00:30:53] I don't really care. You know what I mean? I'll put the bag on the front. What matters is ease of use. Okay. Because again, I look at the bicycle and I hope your athletes or your listeners will look at that. [00:31:04] Start to look at their bicycle, like a tool that's meant to serve us. I don't adapt my body to a bicycle, the bicycle adapts to me. [00:31:11] Okay. I make all of this to help me. The pilot. I am. You listening, you are the pilot, you're the race car driver. You're the fighter plane. You know what I mean? You're the fighter pilot. Okay. That should be an extension of you. It's not that you just ride this thing, you know what I'm saying? And so when we talk about that stuff, I generally don't like to put weight on my back. [00:31:33] Okay. But in this case, we talked about it with my athlete and he was. Dude, it just makes sense. I just have to do it. I just have to move beyond it. And it made an incredible difference on what he's doing because gravel like mountain, it's very difficult to reach into your pockets again. So you've got to think essentially on the timeline of ground. Many people were already on drop bar. They were roadies that didn't want to get mountain bikes. And so now we started venturing we're roadie centric, and now we start getting more and more capable road bikes to now basically they're like drop our mountain bikes. And so you have this roadie aspect of the code. [00:32:10] That's Hey, I want nothing in my pockets. I want my bike to look super sleek, all that's cool. But the reality is when you're doing a hundred mile ride or you're doing 140 mile ride, or even a 60 mile ride, you may not be able to take your hands off of the bars. Okay. So minimizing movements is really important. So one thing we talked about with my athlete was like, Hey, how much can you drink during this eight hour shift? And it was like if I have to take my, if I have to use bottles, it's very difficult. And you start self rationing, those things. So you're immediately dehydrating already. [00:32:45] You're behind the eight ball. So once we put the hydration pack on, yes, there was a penalty for weight. You know what I mean? Was it frustrating? Yeah. Did it hold a little bit of heat on him? Yeah. [00:32:54] But he's doing Lego. Like it's not that big of a deal. But the trade-off was here. He is I want to say it's like 15. [00:33:01] 51 or 52, like he's very early fifties. Okay. And his best, he did Leadville for the first time, I think 10 years ago. Okay. So totally different athlete. If you're 40 and you're doing Leadville and you're 50 doing level and this man came from Ironman. So he was very fit when he was 40. We obliterated his time, his very best time from 10 years earlier when he's 50 with a past. [00:33:24] And so when your listeners are like, man, I'm not going to wear a pack. It's just going to slow me down. I want to share with you 10 years older, this man went 45 plus minutes faster. [00:33:36] Craig Dalton: Amazing. [00:33:37] Brian McCulloch: minutes. And again, it was because we nailed the hydration. We nailed the nutrition, we nailed the preparation, we nailed the patient. [00:33:44] It was all of those things. And I couldn't be more proud of him and I couldn't be more proud to be a part of his journey, but he did that. I, that was the best part. Like we. Dude and he wasn't executed and it was rock solid. So when your athletes or your listeners are doing this please. [00:33:58] Like when you do the preparation and it all comes together, it's just like the recipe and like making your mom's favorite meatloaf for apple pie or whatever. Hey, Thanksgiving's around the corner. You just like pumpkin pie or Turkey. Who's got the best stuff. It's a recipe and everything has to come in together and you got to find your recipe and it's super cool. [00:34:15] When you can add someone that helps you. Add to your recipe. Whether that's a coach or a friend or a mentor, whatever. I'm biased towards coaching but there's lots of great ways to get knowledge transfer can be from YouTube, but something that helps you have that successful event and just helps you look at things differently because the critical elements of a bike ride are not always just, oh there's a climb. [00:34:37] Maybe the critical element is actually when you eat maybe the critical element. Hey, I'm going to let this whole group ride away from me for one hour, because I'm going to set a heart rate ceiling at 145, and then I'm going to, unroll the carpet, so to speak and just get faster and negatively split this, right? [00:34:54] There's so much of that. [00:34:56] Craig Dalton: It's funny. I love that. You mentioned that sort of aesthetic road bias that maybe permeated a lot of the gravel scene in the early days. And it's so true. I think, lot of the earliest athletes were coming over and they had a suspicion. Visual of what a drop our bike would look like. [00:35:11] And now with the influence of these long events and mountain bike technology, I think it's proven that being more open to things like hydration packs or bento boxes, you don't have to be there all the time. They're not necessarily there on every ride, but making sure that bike serves you in these alter endurance events is critical. [00:35:31] Brian McCulloch: Oh, absolutely. Again, it's a tool and it's meant to be adapted to. Okay. And that's just so important. And again I think that in all things like whether it's a bike fit, whether it's shoes, whether it's anything, like people would just go, oh, I just got the gloves from the local bike shop. [00:35:47] And I'm like why did you do that? Let's get the ones that fit you. You're like, oh, they're baggy. And they, it, and you're like, no, like this should be like, we start thinking about one thing. I want to make sure I bring up. Race day is your day to have your best. Like you talked about, I think you nail it so good. [00:36:04] Craig, when you talk about game day, if we think about the culture of football or we think about the culture of hockey, or we think about the culture at any of these other things, even running like cross-country running, right? They wear their best shoes on race day. They have. Best stuff like everything is prying for race day. [00:36:23] And so I want your listeners are athletes. I want them to be like race day. I want a little pep in your step. I want a little extra recovery in you. I want oh man, I get my favorite water bottles. I know that sounds silly. But you can get water bottles that like, they don't put out the flow that you want. [00:36:39] Make it easy on yourself. All of these tools, you have access to incredible tools to help you be successful. Don't be like, Yeah. [00:36:46] I wear my old socks that have a whole. Like, where are your best thoughts? And guess what, if you wear them out, go buy another one. I don't care. Like, where are your best sham? [00:36:54] You know what I mean? This is not the day to be like, oh Yeah. [00:36:56] I got that old to Shani butter. I'm not going to, I'm going to use it. Dude, crack open the new tube of Shandy butter and go, go for it. Make sure you have all the tools that are there to support you. And that they're the best tools it is. [00:37:08] Game day, treat it like such and get after. [00:37:12] Craig Dalton: Yeah. I've always felt doing those little things and making sure you feel great. Look great bikes. Ready to go. That it gives you like, for me, it seems like it gives me like 20% more capacity to suffer that day. If I've really put my game face. [00:37:28] Brian McCulloch: Oh, Yeah, Oh yeah. And it should be the culmination of all of your preparation. It should be the culmination of the hard work you've done. This is where I think of it. Like how much time, money, and effort people invest in going to a big event. I'll give an example. Just last week I went to a mountain bike marathon, national championships, and it was in Maryland and I've never raced in Maryland before. [00:37:53] And I'm really actually fairly new to mountain biking to be candid. I have one season of it. But. What happened was we flew out there early. We pre-rolled three or four days on the course and it made such a big difference. And then when I got into the race, I had some adversity, the guy dropped me, the leader dropped me. And it was in that moment that I was like, Hey, I've invested so much. I don't even care. I'm all in. If I blow up, who cares? And I went for it and guess what it worked out and I won. And it was great because I had invested all of this stuff. [00:38:26] I had everything going in that direction and then I. Uber committed and the right moment, when you have that critical moment, you have to dig deep and find something special. And so when you've invested in that, and I hope your athletes and your listeners, when they're listening, don't be afraid to pay that full price, to pay the full measure of what you do and be like, yeah, I've invested all this. [00:38:47] I've done all this. I've done this, I've done that. And it gets a little bit hard leaning into it, man, when you get in the pain cave, pull up a folding chair and hang. Get after it. You know what I mean? Who cares? Like you've come this far, you've made all of these sacrifices. You've dragged your family for California or New Mexico or Washington DC all the way out to Kansas. [00:39:07] It's important, Kansas. Dude, get after it. Don't just be like, okay, I'm going to sit back and absorb it. And whatever, lean in, you can do it. [00:39:15] Craig Dalton: Et cetera. One of my old coaches used to talk about putting things in the bank and whenever I would complain about a tough workout or whatever, he would just remind me, Hey, that's in the bank. And when it comes to game day, when you suffer in which you will suffer, think about this workout, think about how deep you dug and know you're capable of going there and even more on, on race. [00:39:38] Brian McCulloch: Absolutely. I always think of it like this. You. When I look out at the pier, like if you're out on the beach and you look out, oh, there's this beautiful pier, it's the boardwalk, it's at Santa Cruz or whatever, that was a big thing. When I was growing up in Northern California, it was like, oh, let's increase beach boardwalk. [00:39:55] That was still cool. But you look at the pillars that hold that up. And they have to withstand the abuse of the. And they stand rigid and they stand firm and they're just the waves beat on him, feed on them and feed on them and guess what they have to be replaced. Like that thing has to be replaced every number of years. [00:40:12] I'm sure. I don't know what the number is, but they have to get replaced. Because the C's so powerful. The forces of nature are just incredible. If you're the seek help, what if you're the seek help? What is the. The sea kelp waves with the influx and with they out, it goes with it, and that's a very, like if your listeners are into books I, if you look at very Eastern philosophy, Chinese philosophy and you look at the towel to Chine, or you can look at the sun, SU the art of war, you can look at any of those things. And it's very much that kind of thing. [00:40:42] And I think for athletes in gravel, you have to be able to do same thing. Like suffering is going to wash over you and you can either fight it and be like, oh, when you can be rigid and death grip and all this stuff, or you can be like the seek help and you can just be like, okay. And then my pain came for a little bit, this stinks, and I don't really want to be here, but I'm going to be here for 90 minutes on this crazy climb up crusher in the Tasha, but I want to finish. [00:41:08] Got to do it, so I think w going between both, because there's a time to be rigid and be like, yes, I'm getting after it. And there's a time to be like I'm going to embrace the suck. Like it just is what it is. We just got to chop some wood here and just get out. [00:41:20] Craig Dalton: Exactly. Exactly. This was a full of great information. One of the things I wanted to conclude with was you had made mention to me in our discussion back and forth just about celebrating properly. And I think your mentality as a coach, I just wanted you to speak to that a little bit. [00:41:40] Brian McCulloch: Celebrating us so important. I'm working on something for our athletes right now, where we're going to do a, basically a coach led performance review and a and so it's performance review is going to be like, Hey, how did the year go? What went well, what didn't go well, and one of the things, if you look at we're going to bridge into goal setting for 22, and one thing, if you look at kind of goal setting 1 0 1 and all the books on that is you have to celebrate, and we live in this world that we're always like next. And you never come back to it and go, Hey I didn't celebrate. And so one thing you need to do is think about you need to treat yourself like a valued employee. Not like you're a tyrant, right? So you treat yourself like, Hey, I did really good. [00:42:21] Craig, you have wonder you're a wonderful, successful businessman, right? And so like when you have valued employees that go above and beyond. You don't just be like, cool, here's your next project? You go, great job. That's fantastic. You know what? It's Friday go home at noon. We'll see you on Monday. [00:42:38] And we'll plan from here. That's how you treat valued employees, right? You're like, Hey, that was really great. That's how you treat your kids, right? You're like great job. I'm so proud of you. We're going to pizza tonight, right? Like good effort. And we don't do that to ourselves. We don't do that to ourselves. [00:42:55] We hold ourselves hostage sometimes and we're like, yeah, I could have done better. You know what I mean? Oh Yeah. [00:42:59] I got eight at Belgium authorized Cedar city and got the hard man award. But you know what, I wasn't in the top three, so I'm not happy. Okay. Loser. That's not a cool way to talk to yourself. [00:43:08] And that happened to me and my wife like slaps me and she's what are you doing? Try to have more fun. And I'm trying to talk talk, tell her your listeners and our athletes. I'm telling you that because I have not celebrated a lot of things. I always moved on to the next thing, because I was always something bigger and better. [00:43:23] What I'm trying to tell you is that I want you to stay in the sport a long time and you're, I want you to seek mastery and to do that, we have to do the full range of emotions, right? Like you have to have those stressful moments. You have to overcome those stressful moments and then you have to celebrate all the things you did along your journey. [00:43:38] Okay. And I'm not saying you give yourself a pat on the back. Finishing a forty-five minute trainer workout. You know what I mean? But I am saying when you sign up in October or November for Belgium waffle ride, Kansas, it's 10 months away. You've got to celebrate when you get to the end. And whether your celebration is having a beer with your buddies or giving your eating half of a of a carrot cake, it doesn't matter. That's not what. With what it is for each athlete, but I think celebrating is so important. And what I would also say to tell your athletes, and we talk about celebrate. Make this a family affair. Most of us are, have kids. Most of us have spouses. Most of us have busy lives and there's more people. [00:44:24] So don't make this about what you accomplished, make it about what we accomplished. As a coach, I'm a part of your performance team. Okay. So I want. I didn't pedal the bike for you, but I'm really excited to play the role that I get to play. And I know joy is to my wife. She's really oh my gosh, like you just won a national championship. [00:44:40] That's amazing. But so make it a part of, we, we did this together. When I tell you the, when you're setting goals, tell your friends, right? Tell your buddy Craig Hey, because of this podcast, I decided to sign up for this. And then not only did you sign this, sign up for it, you come back and you're like, I never thought I would do a sub nine Leadville. [00:45:01] Oh my God, I got a big belt buckle. Or whatever your thing is, like I never thought I would do a sub nine hour builds, waffle ride, whatever [00:45:09] Craig Dalton: Yeah. Yeah. I think [00:45:10] Brian McCulloch: Celebrate that and tell people about it because that accountability is what makes us great. And I'm telling you, you are capable of more than you think So hold yourself accountable, put it out in the world, go after it work hard. And if you fall a little short, that doesn't mean you don't celebrate, still celebrate what you did accomplish and then move on and it's. [00:45:30] Bree adjust, recalibrate reengage, set your sights higher and go for it. [00:45:34] Craig Dalton: Yeah, I think those are great words to end by Brian. Thank you for such an enthusiastic conversation. I hope for the list. Everybody's stoked and keep this conversation near ear, particularly those words about being able to do more than you think you can. Cause you, you all are capable of more than you think you are. [00:45:50] Brian, thanks so much again for the time. [00:45:53] Brian McCulloch: Oh, thank You so much, Craig. Thank you for the opportunity. And if anyone ever wants to check us out on big real coaching, please do. It's just my wife and I, and we have a lovely coach. She if there's ever anything we can do to help you, we would love to, but also please. Just get out there, get after it, have a great time. [00:46:09] And let you know, come see us at the races. We're always at the races. We love seeing you. We want to hear about your celebrations and Craig, I want to hear about some of yours. So I'm going to put it on you. I want to hear about what your goals are. And then I want to hear about the process, your preparation, how the race day stuff goes, and then we can have another one of these conversations soon. [00:46:25] Craig Dalton: You got it, Brian. Thanks. [00:46:27] Brian McCulloch: Rock and roll brother. [00:46:27] Craig Dalton: So that's going to do it for this week's podcast. Big thank you to Brian for joining us. I hope you got a lot out of our discussion and another big thanks to athletic greens for sponsoring this episode.
