Montessori is often thought of as an educational philosophy, but my guests for today's episode, Simone Davies and Junnifa Uzodike, are committed to bringing Montessori into the home and guiding parents through the principles of Montessori to enhance their children's development and foster respectful relationships with their families and the world. Over the years, I've learned how much alignment there is in the strength-based parenting approach we subscribe to in our community, where we see and respect our children as the unique humans they are, with the core principles of Montessori, which prioritizes meeting our children where they are and being a guide for them as they navigate their childhood. So I invited Simone and Junnifa to come on the show to talk about how we can apply these Montessori principles to parenting our neurodivergent kids and some of the other concepts they write about in their lovely new book, The Montessori Child: A Parent's Guide to Raising Capable Children with Creative Minds and Compassionate Hearts. About Simone Davies Simone Davies is the author of The Montessori Toddler and co-author of The Montessori Baby and The Montessori Child books, comprehensive guides to raising children in a Montessori way.Simone is an AMI Montessori educator based in Amsterdam. Hello! Welcome to the LTF Podcast! I am so glad you're here. In this episode I ramble on about routines; how to establish them and why they matter. This information can be applied to the classroom or at home. This episode is linked to the last episode about independence. Children are always in search of themselves, and who they are in the world, and we often get in their way. Establishing freedom within boundaries via routines will help the child to develop self-awareness, confidence feelings of safety, pride, and community all while building independence too. Routines are not bad! Only those charts and when we hold on to them so tight we refuse to adjust as needed. Thanks for listening! Come along with us through our Montessori morning with our toddlers. Montessori morning routines look like activities, materials, outings, and the work of the adult all mixed together. From school drop offs, to phone calls, and shelf work, get an in-depth look at how toddlers get their day started. Hello and welcome to the LTF Podcast! I am so happy you're here. You must have chosen this episode because you yourself are experiencing the amazing wonder that is the young child and asserting their independence, finding their voice and their self realization that their actions have power! In this episode I share with you some of my insights and ideas as to why this is such a wonderous time in childhood, some coping strategies and ways to better assist your child during this time of self discovery as well as just letting you know that yes, it does pass.I hope that whether you're an educator or parent you will find something useful in this episode and that, in the very least, you will know that you're not alone.
Love for your child is absolutely something you probably don't ever have to question or think about, right? In this episode I explore the definition of love, the aspect of attachment and how your love for your child could potentially be holding your child back in their development and quest for independence. I explore how our adult mindset and need for control can in fact be hindering our child's growth and possibly impacting our relationship with them. Often times we think that when we protect and provide everything for them, this is the greatest act of love...when in fact letting go...stepping back and guiding them towards independence is truly loving them. This is because when we step back, let go... we are acknowledging the child as an independent individual. We are supporting their future selves. I also give you ideas on how to achieve this level of freedom within boundaries in your own home today! Thanks for tuning in! Find me on Instagram @learningtakesflight

In this episode of Tilt Parenting, I bring back to the show Simone Davies, a Montessori teacher and parent educator who runs a Montessori playgroup in Amsterdam for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers up to four years old. Through her online business, The Montessori Notebook, Simone focuses on helping parents learn how to bring Montessori into their home. Today Simone and I are talking about the “spaces” in our home—specifically how we can best design and set them up to support our differently-wired kids. I've watched as Simone developed her virtual e-course, Setting Up Your Home Montessori Style, and I was struck by how the approach she talks about in her course directly relates to the things we as parents can do to support our kids in developing those crucial executive functioning skills, like task initiation, time management, planning, and organizing, as well as fostering independence. In this episode, we'll talk about how we can set up our homes—our kitchen, bedroom, shoes and coat area, homework space—to support our children in fostering these skills. Simone Davies is also the author of The Montessori Toddler, a comprehensive guide to raising your toddler in a Montessori way. It includes Montessori activities, how to set up your home, and how to encourage cooperation from your children, and The Montessori Baby. Things you'll learn from this episode How to set up the shoes and coat area to help kids “get out the door” with success and independenceHow making checklists for our kids can instill in them a sense of responsibility while also easing transitionsWhat parents who aren't naturally organized can support themselvesThe gifts of decluttering and clearing our spaceThe importance of making a homework space inviting and distraction-freeTips for setting up spaces to foster more independence in childrenWhy making things attractive, cozy, and comfortable benefits our kids Resources mentioned for supporting children's growth at home The Montessori NotebookSimone Davies on Strategies for Staying Calm in Difficult SituationsSetting Up Your Home Montessori-Style Julie George on the Role of Executive Functioning in Differently-Wired Kids Switch: How to Change Things When Change is HardSupport the showConnect with Tilt Parenting Visit Tilt Parenting Take the free 7-Day Challenge Read a chapter of Differently Wired Follow Tilt on Twitter & Instagram
Hello LTF Listeners! This is episode 2 in my mini series all about building community within a school group, classroom or homeschool (psst... you also need to focus on building community within your family group too!). In this episode I share my thoughts, ideas and suggestions about building community among the adults in the children's lives. I share they reasons why building community is so important and how to build and maintain community among the adults. Because our focus in education should be the child, it is imperative that the adults take care of themselves and are the best models for the child on how to relate, learn and care for ones self and their community. As always, thank you for listening! Please feel free to always reach out, ask my questions and let me know if there is a specific topic pertaining to Montessori, child development or teaching you'd like to hear discussed on the LTF podcast.
Hello LTF Listeners! I am so excited to be back with a new episode of the LTF podcast. In this episode I will share with you the reason why building classroom community is so important and how you can begin to build a classroom where children feel safe, accepted and truly part of a class family. This is the first episode in my mini series all about the importance of school community and how to build it! Each episode will focus on a different aspect of the school community: students, colleagues and families. Though my perspective is from a Montessori elementary classroom, I truly believe that there is something here for educators and parents of children with any changes and method of education. When we create a safe space for children to be themselves and build social skills, we are helping to make the world a more peaceful and empathetic place. Thank you for tuning in! Special guest: Simone Davies,Let's face it. When people hear the word; “toddler” it often conjures up thoughts of “the terrible twos,” torrential tantrums and tirades that feature the word “NO!” in big capital letters. There are frustrations about toddlers not listening, not eating fruits and vegetables, not sleeping, not listening, not allowing parents to go to go out on a date or go to the bathroom without their company. But what if I told you that by looking at life through a toddler's eyes and using the methods developed by Dr. Montessori, you can learn the peaceful way of raising a toddler to become a curious, responsible, kind individual? That is exactly what we are going to do today with our next guest. Simone Davies is the author of “The Montessori Toddler”, runs parent-child Montessori classes in Amsterdam at her school Jacaranda Tree Montessori, and is mother of two young adults. She also has a popular blog, “The Montessori Notebook”. Finding Montessori helped her so much when raising her own children and it's now her passion to help other parents introduce these ideas in their homes too. She was looking to find a way to be with her kids that wasn't about bossing them about, threatening them and bribing them. Or giving them free reign either. And she wanted them to have a positive experience of school, not just to pass tests, but to love learning. Hello Listeners! This week I will share with you the importance of how we move, speak and are when in the presence of children. Our phrasing, body language and what we model is more important than the most beautiful materials, classroom set up or "perfect" lesson. The children will absorb our presence and we will impress upon their young minds how adults are in their presence. Are we someone who will nurture, someone whom they can trust? Or someone who is frazzled or prone to outbursts? It can be exhausting to feel as though you're always "on" so to speak, so how do develop a lifestyle and boundaries for ourselves that allows us to be our best for our children, and what do we do when we make mistakes, have an outburst or lose our cool?Find out on this week's episode what you can do to be your best self with the children in your life, providing them independence, a safe space and modeling how to communicate in a healthy way. I also share my favorite moment of the week, a truly bittersweet one this time. As always, thank you for listening and following.
The Montessori prepared environment can truly be a place of magic! By providing the child with order, beauty and opportunities for independence you can unlock the magic of the Montessori goal of the child who is independent and thus happy! Confident! Self aware! This week I share with you the magic of the prepared environment i.e. the classroom, how to achieve this and what to do when things don't seem to be going how you planned. I hope you tune in, follow and find me on instagram! I am so happy you're here! “The first aim of the prepared environment is, as far as it is possible, to render the growing child independent of the adult.”— Maria Montessori

The reality is that sometimes Montessori is messy, imperfect and not how we planned.. Sometimes as parents and educators we say and do the wrong thing. I am just discovering Montessori and I have a 3…almost 4 year old. She has developed a fear of bugs so much that she cries when it’s time to go outside. I’m a working mom so I try to get her outside as much as I can. I do let her hold my hand and I let her know that she is safe. We talk about bugs that are okay to observe close up vs bugs that we want to observe at a distance. Basically, how do I navigate through this time? We are in Michigan so it’s quite buggy right now and the summer months are upon us. My husband and I loooove being outside (camping, gardening, etc) but now she’s so afraid that we are finding ourselves inside a lot to respect her emotions. - Scarlett
Hello listeners! This week I share with you my message, which is Dr. Montessori's message that peace can come through education. I will share with you ideas on how to incorporate education for peace within your home and classroom. I'll give you a little hint on one of my ideas... it begins with BOOKS! Reading truly does help. I believe so much in building a community through this podcast and I want to encourage you to keep going in this vital work, you matter as an educator, parent and guide. You have a gift before you in the life of the child(ren) and an opportunity to help to make the world a better place, even when it seems an impossible feat. This week I share with you why providing art and crafting experiences for children is so important! I give some examples of how to make these opportunities more accessible, affordable and less daunting to provide. I will also share with you some of the things we should never do in regards to a child's creative efforts. This is one of those "tip of the iceberg" episodes... an entire podcast series could be dedicated to providing art for children. I hope that this episode is a launching off point though and provides some inspiration and support. If you have any questions about how to adapt your classroom to offer more opportunities for art and crafting, please email me at:learningtakesflightmontessori@gmail.comHappy Listening!

This episode about Marvin Reyes and sustainabilitySuch a fun conversation today with Marvin of Vincerola nurseries & preschools in Cologne, Germany. We were planning to interview some of the children but with 4 and 5 year olds whose native language isn't English, well, you'll have to listen to hear how that went. Keeping it real. Then I got to ask Marvin all about their sustainability projects in their Montessori school. We talked about building bee hotels, nature visits and how they are making children conscious of how much trash they make in a week. I listen to the podcast regularly and read the Montessori Toddler while on maternity leave. My 2.5 year old son attends a lovely AMI Montessori School full time here in Canada, and my husband and I try our best to follow the Montessori method at home, although we were both raised in a very different way. His teachers report that our little guy is easy and affable at school, but at home he has lately started to push up on limits very strongly. Although I understand this is exactly what he should be doing, I often don't know what to do after I feel like I appropriately responded to his behavior and he persists in it.For an example: the first nice warm day of Spring on our commute home from school (I was walking and pulling him in his wagon as usual) we saw another family eating ice cream cones. He started asking for ice cream, repeating the request more and more urgently. I pulled the wagon off the side walk, crouched down to his level to look him in the eye. I calmly explained that I understood that he wanted ice cream, ice cream was delicious and I wished we could have some too. But today we were not going to have ice cream. I couldn't buy him ice cream today (this was true, I hadn't brought my wallet), which was hard, because I understood the he wanted some very much. Today was not the day to have ice cream. Today was that family's turn to eat ice cream and it would be our tun to have ice cream on a different day. Today we were going to the park!. I felt like we had connected and he understood, but as soon as we started walking again he resumed yelling and repeating his demand for ice cream. What to do in this instance? Ignoring him didn't feel very respectful, but I was at a loss how else to move on and ended up diverting him with the slide when we arrived at the playground. This is an example of something that is happening a lot. I feel like I am communicating that I understand his wishes, explain the limit, and validate his feelings towards the limit. But then when he continues to test that limit (which I understand) what is the best way to respond?"

In this discussion, Simone shares insight into the history of Montessori, the four planes of development (as outlined by Dr. Montessori), empowering methods for communicating trust and appreciation to our children, the concept of acknowledgment versus praise, and tips for bringing the practices of Montessori teaching into our homes. The Montessori method of teaching is built on self-directed activity, collaborative play and hands-on, practical learning. It emphasizes independence and supports and celebrates individuality. Simone shares that her main message for children and families is to be authentically yourself; she elaborates that Montessori is about accepting every child exactly as they are, as well as learning to respect others for their differences. The Montessori Toddler by Simone Davies has over 200,000 copies in print and is helping families around the globe with children between one and three years to bring Montessori principles into their home. On May 11, 2021, The Montessori Baby (co-writtten with Junnifa Uzodike) will be added to the collection, which focuses on the developmental period from conception through the first year. This week I share with you about what is often called "teacher burnout". I truly think though that anyone working with children (and remember, children develop until age 24!) can feel overwhelmed, uninspired, frustrated and fatigued. I will share with you my experience with these feelings and what you can do to try and get through them. The most important message this week is this:give yourself grace and know that you are not alone!I hope that you can find some helpful advice here and maybe just the reassurance that what you are feeling, especially this time of year while a pandemic rages on, is completely normal!
This week I am sharing with you about why Montessori education is unique. I share the four key elements of Montessori education and how they are implemented in the classroom and into the raising of children. I will also share with you how you can implement these four elements into your child's life whether they attend a Montessori school or not. Dr. Montessori wrote and spoke about education being the only way for us to truly reach lasting peace, and in this episode I share with you how achieving peace through education is possible with these four key elements of Montessori education. When we raise children with empathy, accountability and an understanding of their impact within their community, we will raise children who care about others and who will understand how they can make the world a more accepting, loving and peaceful place.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Simone Davies, Author of THE MONTESSORI TODDLER. Toddlers can be a handful. They won't eat, won't sleep, won't listen, and in general go left when their parents want them to go right! But toddlerhood can bring as many frustrations (is that chocolate in the carpet?), as it does joys (“I did it all by myself!”)—and by raising a child the Montessori way, parents learn to view their child through a new lens and enjoy their toddler for who they genuinely are. And now with THE MONTESSORI TODDLER: A PARENT'S GUIDE TO RAISING A CURIOUS AND RESPONSIBLE HUMAN BEING (March 19, 2019), written by specially certified Montessori educator Simone Davies, parents can bring Montessori principles into their home. Montessori is a 100-year-old educational method taught at 4,000 Montessori schools around the country, and another 20,000 worldwide. Drawing from Davies 15 years of experience from teaching the Montessori method to thousands of parents, THE MONTESSORI TODDLER offers parents step-by-step, practical ideas for raising self-sufficient, curious, and independent toddlers and children.
