As a parent myself, I'm always seeking ways to expand my knowledge and create a nurturing environment for Ollie and Keira. The Montessori approach has been particularly intriguing to me because of its emphasis on fostering independence, curiosity, and respect in children. By providing tools for success, encouraging their abilities, and giving them space to develop independently, the Montessori way offers a powerful alternative to conventional parenting. It helps children develop critical thinking, self-discipline, and a love for learning while maintaining a respectful and collaborative parent-child relationship. In this episode, experienced Montessori educators and advocates Simone Davies and Junnifa Uzodike share invaluable insights on integrating Montessori principles into the daily lives of school-aged children. We explore key differences between Montessori and traditional parenting, debunk common misconceptions, and offer practical tips for cultivating respect and handling tantrums with grace. Discover how to balance nurturing and spoiling, create meaningful connections, and bring joy into modern parenting. Simone and Junnifa also discuss the importance of co-regulation, unlearning traditional parenting practices, and adjusting to the Montessori approach. Montessori is often thought of as an educational philosophy, but my guests for today's episode, Simone Davies and Junnifa Uzodike, are committed to bringing Montessori into the home and guiding parents through the principles of Montessori to enhance their children's development and foster respectful relationships with their families and the world. Over the years, I've learned how much alignment there is in the strength-based parenting approach we subscribe to in our community, where we see and respect our children as the unique humans they are, with the core principles of Montessori, which prioritizes meeting our children where they are and being a guide for them as they navigate their childhood. So I invited Simone and Junnifa to come on the show to talk about how we can apply these Montessori principles to parenting our neurodivergent kids and some of the other concepts they write about in their lovely new book, The Montessori Child: A Parent's Guide to Raising Capable Children with Creative Minds and Compassionate Hearts.   About Simone Davies Simone Davies is the author of The Montessori Toddler and co-author of The Montessori Baby and The Montessori Child books, comprehensive guides to raising children in a Montessori way.Simone is an AMI Montessori educator based in Amsterdam. In this episode of Tilt Parenting, I bring back to the show Simone Davies, a Montessori teacher and parent educator who runs a Montessori playgroup in Amsterdam for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers up to four years old. Through her online business, The Montessori Notebook, Simone focuses on helping parents learn how to bring Montessori into their home. Today Simone and I are talking about the “spaces” in our home—specifically how we can best design and set them up to support our differently-wired kids. I've watched as Simone developed her virtual e-course, Setting Up Your Home Montessori Style, and I was struck by how the approach she talks about in her course directly relates to the things we as parents can do to support our kids in developing those crucial executive functioning skills, like task initiation, time management, planning, and organizing, as well as fostering independence. In this episode, we'll talk about how we can set up our homes—our kitchen, bedroom, shoes and coat area, homework space—to support our children in fostering these skills.  Simone Davies is also the author of The Montessori Toddler, a comprehensive guide to raising your toddler in a Montessori way. Special guest: Simone Davies,Let's face it. When people hear the word; “toddler” it often conjures up thoughts of “the terrible twos,” torrential tantrums and tirades that feature the word “NO!” in big capital letters. There are frustrations about toddlers not listening, not eating fruits and vegetables, not sleeping, not listening, not allowing parents to go to go out on a date or go to the bathroom without their company. But what if I told you that by looking at life through a toddler's eyes and using the methods developed by Dr. Montessori, you can learn the peaceful way of raising a toddler to become a curious, responsible, kind individual? That is exactly what we are going to do today with our next guest. Finding Montessori helped her so much when raising her own children and it's now her passion to help other parents introduce these ideas in their homes too. She was looking to find a way to be with her kids that wasn't about bossing them about, threatening them and bribing them. Or giving them free reign either. How do you feel after you make a purchase?  Do you feel good about your decision? Do you have guilt over it?  Diana shares her first time buying home decor that was fairtrade, something she didn't realize even existed.  Her purchasing experience was very unlike previous purchases which prompted her to start Saltbox Sash. Saltbox Sash is everything home decor that is also fair trade.  Often when we think of fair trade items we think of coffee, tea, and chocolate, but Diana is bringing light to a whole new array of fair trade products that we can use to make our houses a home.  Her products are from all over the world and connect her customers with ethically sourced and high-quality goods.   We also dive into how to teach our children the importance of fairtrade products and how we can get them involved in fun ways as well as engage in constructive dialogue around the topic.  I share a story of taking my children with me overseas to visit some of the areas we were getting our fair trade products from and the impact that has had on their lives and how they are implementing a sustainable lifestyle today in their own lives.   Topics Discussed: Expanding our view of fairtrade products. Why it's important to start small with a more fairtrade lifestyle.  How do we teach our kids about fairtrade? Have you ever struggled with finding toys that keep your child entertained?  Have you felt that you no sooner buy them a toy than they are bored with it and are wanting something new?  In the episode, I sit down with Ashley from Farmhouse 598 as she explains to us how less is often more with our children's toys.  She explains to us simple ways we can implement the Montessori learning approach in order to enrich our children's lives.  She also gives us some easy hacks we can all implement to bring back excitement over old toys that our children already have. We follow her journey from becoming an educated teacher to coming back into woodworking and how she now uses that skill to create children's toys from wood which is far more sustainable and long-lasting, and better for the child's development. Ashley is also a homesteader and uses the Montessori approach in homeschooling. We dive into the benefits of this type of learning as well as how it makes the child's play areas more aesthetically pleasing and avoids the over-stimulation and lack of creativity that many toys today bring.  We will also learn about creative ways to keep your child entertained and how so often less is more with creativity.  Ashley talks about how to watch your child discover their playing habits in order to get new ideas for how to stimulate their playtime.     Topics Discussed: Being a woman in a male-dominated space. The Montessori approach to learning. The benefits of wooden toys and toy rotation. Dealing with relatives who want to buy too many gifts for your child. --   SUBSCRIBE TO START SMALL: iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/start-small/id1537390467 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/49cOe3NI7OHSXACpUsQSkC Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcjQKGox5xnowa3nD1J5vGQ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/start-small TuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Health--Wellness-Podcasts/Start-Small-p1380487/ Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9tb3lhYXNoZWFidXR0ZXIubGlic3luLmNvbS9wbGF5ZXJmbQ   Connect with Ashley: Website: https://www.farmhouse598.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/farmhouse598/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/farmhouse598 Email: ashley@farmhouse598.com       Resources Mentioned: Montessori Toddler by Simone Davies: https://www.amazon.com/Montessori-Toddler-Parents-Raising-Responsible/dp/152350689X/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=montessori+toddler&qid=1614373704&sr=8-5 Simone Davie's Podcast: https://www.themontessorinotebook.com/the-montessori-notebook-podcast/ Connect with us! Most of us know that our kids could be more self-sufficient and helpful around the house than they are today. We look back on our own childhoods and see that we developed life skills much earlier than our own kids, but for various reasons — including our tendency to pack our schedules with activities that are focussed on the kids, we haven't made this a priority with our own children. So how do we go about raising our kids in a way that both nurtures them and helps them develop abilities to care for themselves and to contribute to their households and communities? If you're heard anything about Montessori education, you likely know that it puts a lot of importance on practical life. I'm joined today by Simone Davies, a Montessori teacher and the author of The Montessori Toddler: A Parents Guide to Raising a Curious and Responsible Human Being. While the book focuses on the toddler years, it's guidance on the Montessori philosophy is relevant to all ages. Simone and I talk about how our kids are capable of far more than we may currently be expecting of them, and how to cultivate the self-sufficiency and life skills they'll need to thrive when they eventually leave the nest. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Simone Davies, Author of  THE MONTESSORI TODDLER.              Toddlers can be a handful. They won't eat, won't sleep, won't listen, and in general go left when their parents want them to go right! But toddlerhood can bring as many frustrations (is that chocolate in the carpet?), as it does joys (“I did it all by myself!”)—and by raising a child the Montessori way, parents learn to view their child through a new lens and enjoy their toddler for who they genuinely are.             And now with THE MONTESSORI TODDLER: A PARENT'S GUIDE TO RAISING A CURIOUS AND RESPONSIBLE HUMAN BEING (March 19, 2019), written by specially certified Montessori educator Simone Davies, parents can bring Montessori principles into their home. Montessori is a 100-year-old educational method taught at 4,000 Montessori schools around the country, and another 20,000 worldwide.             Drawing from Davies 15 years of experience from teaching the Montessori method to thousands of parents, THE MONTESSORI TODDLER offers parents step-by-step, practical ideas for raising self-sufficient, curious, and independent toddlers and children.
