In her 1936 book, The Secret of Childhood, Maria Montessori writes that “We must wake up to the great reality that children have a psychic life whose delicate manifestations escape notice and whose pattern of activity can be unconsciously disrupted by adults.” The approach to education that Montessori established sought to remove such unnecessary disruptions while cultivating a fruitful environment wherein children could discover the world, grow toward the maturation of their God-given capacities, and experience the wonder and responsibility of real freedom. Montessori schools have since been established all across the United States and indeed across the world, including here in my own hometown of South Bend, Indiana. The conversation on our episode today will focus on one such school, St. Joseph Montessori, which is in fact a Catholic Montessori school for children ages 2.5 to 6. My guest is Dr. Elizabeth Capdevielle, who is a board member of St. Joseph Montessori, and who, as a trained Montessori educator, will help us learn more about the Montessori approach, the anthropological underpinnings of this education, and the correspondence of Montessori education to a Catholic vision of the world and the human person. In addition to serving on the board at St. Joseph Montessori, Beth is an assistant teaching professor at the University of Notre Dame, where she teaches in the University Writing Program. Danny and Maura Vega are two of the superstar parents featured in my upcoming Boundless Parenting book. They are the founders of Fat Fueled Family LLC, a blog, podcast, and YouTube channel dedicated to leading a movement that empowers families to eat better, move more, and grow closer. I interviewed Danny, the author of the children's book series Unexplainable Adventures, the first fictional, character-based series of growth and development books geared specifically for children. After working as a basketball strength and conditioning coach, Danny spent ten years in the medical device industry before starting Fat Fueled Family LLC. If you are searching for a holistic parenting approach where food, education, relationships, movement, spirituality, and the outdoors all hold an equally important space in your child's upbringing, you will love this episode. The Vega's are very purposeful when it comes to the food they eat as a family; we get to learn what foods are out, what foods are in, and why. They are also purposeful and passionate about the kind of schooling their children experience, learning from mistakes as they go. I enjoyed our quick chat about different kinds of "unschooling" methods and great resources that can help parents choose. I am a huge fan of creating Rites of Passage for my children. It's important to involve children in Rites of Passage as they move through different stages of life. This gives them a sense of independence, confidence, pride, and ownership over their life. Danny talks to us a bit about the Rites of Passage that he's laid out for his sons. You can't talk about rethinking education for long without hearing Montessori come up. In fact, several past guests on the show have mentioned it, either as an inspiration or having been brought up in that educational philosophy themselves. While we've scratched the surface before, we've never had the opportunity to dig into it until now.Joining us to help us get a clear picture of this popular education method is Hannah Baynham, Director of Learning and Professional Development at Montessori and Melanie Thiesse, Senior Director of Membership and School Accreditation. They share the philosophy behind Montessori, why it's so popular among those rethinking education, and how it is helping to shape the future of education. To learn more, visit: pastfoundation.orgWe unbox:What Montessori is and where it comes fromHow Montessori practitioners balance student agency and facilitationHow schools can get accredited as a Montessori schoolIntegrating Montessori education in an existing school environmentHow Montessori is pushing the future of educationResources:Learn more: amshq.orgConnect with Hannah on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/hannah-joy-baynham-16aa211a9Connect with Melanie on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/mthiesseMentioned in this episode:Learning Unboxed Audience SurveyThank you for listening to Learning Unboxed! Today we welcome the founder of Montessorieducation.com, Jesse McCarthy. We learn what makes a school "Montessori style," see how you can tell if your child could be a good fit, and find out what age is typical to start Montessori. We then discuss the Montessori experience and dive into some real-life examples: Does Montessori-style discipline exist? What happens when kids aren't listening in Montessori? And finally, what changes could your child experience by putting them in Montessori for preschool but then switching them to a more "traditional" elementary school? --------------------- Find more Dad Podcasts from A Dad's Path a website for dads!!
According to the National Autistic Society, "There is increasing evidence that the Montessori approach is highly effective for children on the autism spectrum." The individualized learning plan and hands-on teaching methods help students with autism learn in ways that are tailored for them. Montessori schools also emphasize social skills and peer interaction, which can be beneficial for children with autism. In addition, the structure and routine of a Montessori classroom can provide a calming environment for children with autism. We are joined by Erin Banks to talk through this teaching method and explore how it can help your kiddo grow! What is Montessori learning and how can it help children on the autism spectrum? How does a Montessori classroom environment differ from a traditional classroom setting for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)? What are some of the key benefits of Montessori learning for children with ASD, such as improved communication and social skills, increased focus and concentration, and better self-esteem? Are there any drawbacks to using a Montessori approach for educating children with ASD? How can parents ensure that their child receives the best possible education through a Montessori program or in another setting that meets their individual needs?" Hola! I'm Karina host of Elevating la Cultura, and today I'm talking with Lisset from Casita Montessori. I get so excited to hear stories of people pouring back into their community, which is exactly what Lisset is doing by opening this school. I loved learning about Montessori education and why it's so important to her to bring this type of access to the southside of Chicago. She is working hard to open the doors to this school by fundraising through her business La Casa Calderon. If you can, support by purchasing products from her site. I can't wait for the day that the doors are open, and the families are supported and loved through the community Lisset is building.Website: COMING SOONFacebook: Casita Montessori Chicago & La Casa Calderón Instagram: @casita.montessori & @lacasacalderonTikTok: @lacasacalderonOk amigos, Thank you so much for listening. This week I am sharing with you about why Montessori education is unique. I share the four key elements of Montessori education and how they are implemented in the classroom and into the raising of children. I will also share with you how you can implement these four elements into your child's life whether they attend a Montessori school or not. Dr. Montessori wrote and spoke about education being the only way for us to truly reach lasting peace, and in this episode I share with you how achieving peace through education is possible with these four key elements of Montessori education. When we raise children with empathy, accountability and an understanding of their impact within their community, we will raise children who care about others and who will understand how they can make the world a more accepting, loving and peaceful place.
So here's the challenge all parents of young children face: how can we get out the door in the morning without our children fighting us every step of the way? Sometimes kids refuse to get dressed, don't want to eat the breakfast we served them, or are simply too immersed in an activity to listen to us. What can we do in these situations? So to help us get there, I asked for the help of Katy Wang who is the Lower School Director at Mission Montessori (which is the program for 3 - 6 year olds). She's been in early childhood education for the past 15 years: she has her AMI Certification in Primary Montessori (ages 3 - 6), AMI Certification for Elementary (ages 6 - 12), Masters in Educational Leadership, and will soon complete her Masters in Montessori Education. Here are just some of the learnings from the episode with Katy: Respect your child: When your child says “I don't want to go to school”, listen to her and treat her as you would a friend. You wouldn't ignore your friend and let them know “I don't care, you have to go to work.” No, you would empathize with them, “Yea, sometimes I don't want to go to work either.”Model behavior: When you get frustrated with your child, it's ok to be vulnerable, apologize to them, and take the time to explain why you're frustrated. Model the behavior you want your children to have.Use the “head fake” technique: If the kids aren't being responsive, try to snap them out of it by being playful (like when I pretended the dress was eating Juniper's head). Or, spur their curiosity, like when I asked Juniper, “I wonder what activities she's going to do at school.”Problem solve: If your child is focused on an activity in the morning, problem solve with them to refocus their attention: for example, when Juniper was engrossed in drawing in the morning, I could ask her “where do you think is a good place to hide your drawing in a secret place so that it's untouched until you get back from school.”I want to thank Katy Wang and Mission Montessori for being a part of our episode today.I want your feedback, questions, anything really. I just want to talk to you and the best way to do it is by shooting me a tweet at @junloayza.If you found this episode of Dad Smarter Not Harder valuable, then I ask you to please pay-it-forward by forwarding this episode to one other parent. Your recommendation to another parent is the greatest compliment you can give me. Thank you very much.
