Dr. Michelle Otstot explains the "Walk the Line" activity, a key Practical Life exercise in a Montessori early childhood classroom. The activity is designed to foster motor development, concentration, coordination, emotional regulation, and cognitive skills. She emphasizes how this simple exercise aids children's independence and social awareness while promoting a sense of balance, both physically and emotionally.
In this week's Coffee Talk, Megan sits down (with a surprise guest) to chat about her journey to normalization in her brand new Children's House classroom. Megan shares in what ways she has had to evaluate herself, her approach, her priorities, and how building community through a heavy focus on practical life (and grace & courtesy, but more about that another time!). This episode is a fantastic reminder of why practical life is more the heart of the normalization process, and why it is so very important we don't skip over these often tedious lessons and steps!

As SDAs, we all know about the Great Controversy. We all have this idea in mind that there is this controversy between Christ and Satan going on in the background. At least Satan wants us to think it's just that—a background scenario that's mainly independent from our every day lives. In light of the Great Controversy between Christ and Satan, our controversies could be called small controversies in the scheme of things. But, as I'm sure we all would admit, we tend to think of our personal controversies as though they're great controversies, and sometimes THE Great Controversy between Christ and Satan becomes pushed out of our thinking as something irrelevant to our every day choices. In this study learn about how viewing things from the perspective of the Great Controversy can help pull into our every decision the knowledge of the two ways - the ways and principles of Christ versus the ways and principles of Satan- and this hopefully will help us make our choices easy ones because we can see more clearly the end result which our choices lead to. This is hard to accomplish when we are tricked into looking at the small picture - our small controversies - without keeping a knowledge of the Great Controversy in the forefront of our minds. Do you feel like you're checking boxes to ensure your child's success but still questioning your approach? Well, you're not alone. Listen as Lacy Estelle dives into ADHD and the myth of transactional parenting. Discover why fulfilling tasks aren't the key to everything and how true fulfillment is found in grace and intentionality. Lacy challenges the fear-based parenting narrative and shares insightful experiences to help you embrace faith and act in ways that glorify God. Plus, don't miss her candid take on Bill Gothard's teachings and why they don't align with biblical principles.3 Key Takeaways:- Parenting is not a series of transactions guaranteeing successful outcomes; it's a journey of faith, intention, and individual growth.- True fulfillment comes from a relationship with God that is rooted in grace and faith, rather than fear and a checklist of tasks.- Our worth and the worth of our relationships, especially with our children, are not defined by societal standards but through compassion and trust in God's plan.Links & Resources:#192 Escaping Legalism and Cult-like Teachings, with Jinger Duggar Vuolo, on The Alisa Childers PodcastThe Intentional Mom Podcast | Simple, Practical Life & Home Solutions for Women of All Ages & Stages of Life Support the show

Hello! Welcome to the LTF Podcast! I am so glad you're here. In this episode I ramble on about routines; how to establish them and why they matter. This information can be applied to the classroom or at home. This episode is linked to the last episode about independence. Children are always in search of themselves, and who they are in the world, and we often get in their way. Establishing freedom within boundaries via routines will help the child to develop self-awareness, confidence feelings of safety, pride, and community all while building independence too. Routines are not bad! Only those charts and when we hold on to them so tight we refuse to adjust as needed. Thanks for listening! Maria Montessori developed her method for children with an emphasis on practical life activities before the invention of the television, and yet children are still called to the real, purposeful work that this subject area offers. Modern parents, stressed by our fast-paced world and inundated with techy solutions for every possible problem typically look to children's cartoons for support and entertainment. They bemoan how addictive screens are. However, practical life activities offer a nurturing and educational alternative to keeping little hands busy. Plus, they are addictive as well: in a good way! Practical Life is hard and we need better instruction to listen to. How does Proverbs speak into our everyday lives and how can I learn better about living God's life with skill, expertise and competence? In other words, how do I live God's beautiful life wisely? Emotions are a huge part of our lives. We are emotional creatures. Circumstances, relationships and personal makeup are usually drivers of emotions, but the biblical authors seek to teach us that negative emotions should not be drivers of our actions. We do not have to respond to emotions as our habits dictate. It is possible to feel one way and act another. This is such an important lesson that God seeks to teach us as we seek to be obedient to God's commands.

How does Proverbs speak into our everyday lives and how can I learn better about living God's life with skill, expertise and competence? In other words, how do I live God's beautiful life wisely? Sin is a word we use a lot, but don't spend a ton of time thinking about sinning verses not. Sin is missing the mark that God has designed and created us to hit. So we can sin by doing, just like we can sin by not doing. This conversation will hopefully help you situate and think about sin better. We don't simply need to continue to fall into it but need to understand that it is something that Jesus died to free us from and we need to consider ourselves dead to it and kill it.
Practical Life is hard and we need better instruction to listen to. Conflict in this life is inevitable, but it doesn't have to mean the relationship is over. Far to often, that is exactly what it means. As we engage with one another, and experience conflict what does Proverbs teach us about moving forward in love?

Steve and Andrew are joined by Kevin #2 to discuss practical ways to improve our lives.
Maria Montessori defined Practical Life as… purposeful activities that develop motor control and coordination, and develop independence, concentration, and a sense of responsibility. The exercises in practical life cover two main areas of development: care of self, and care of the environment. Why did Maria Montessori believe that practical life work was a necessity in childhood? Maria Montessori was an observer and through her observations of children she came to believe children have this innate sense of curiosity within them and they want to participate in the activities that they see happening around them. So she coined the term “practical life” and believed strongly in children being part of the daily activities such as cleaning dishes, washing laundry, and cleaning up normal activities that children were participating in. Why have them sit aside when they are craving to be independent and want to be functioning members in the household/environment. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
