The tenth episode of “Kicking the Copier” is all about how we as teachers tend to respond to “bad vibes” in our classroom (this time of year especially) in a way that sometimes makes those “bad vibes” even worse. In Marcus's experience: by retreating from classroom community rather than leaning into classroom community.Today's reflection, then, is about a realization he had in his own classroom around this tendency; how he shifted in response; and what he wants to take from this learning going forward. As always, thanks to: Alberto Lugo, one of Jim's former students, for contributing their music to The Broken Copier podcast and also Tom Csatari for allowing us to use his band's recording of “Woodstock” from their 2020 album, Garden; and Courtney Milavec for graphic design.* Find Tom's work at uncivilizedtom.com, and on Instagram @banduncivilized.* Find Alberto's work at djsynchro.weebly.com, and on Instagram @djsynchro. * Email thoughts to thebrokencopier@substack.com or leave feedback at fanlist.com/brokencopier.Thanks for listening, and take care of yourselves! We've heard it said:  Relationships are everything. It's a bold statement, but - man, is it ever true…ESPECIALLY when it comes to teaching! If the pandemic and the past two years have taught us anything, it's that teaching and the success of students is more than just the academics that are taught.  At least - academics are only a piece of the puzzle. And if academics are like a puzzle... then the teacher-student relationship is the table that you build the puzzle on.And, the conversation that I had on this week's podcast is simply amazing.Johnny Tiersma, 6th grade teacher and children's book author, knows a thing or two about building relationships with students.  His 16+ years in education has taught him that teaching the curriculum starts with building a positive classroom community.  And he doesn't only KNOW this - he's passionate about it.So, when he reached out to me to share his 10 truths about building a classroom community - it was a no brainer. This isn't your average conversation about building a classroom community.  Johnny uses not only his teaching experience, but his humor and his heart, along with a few stories to help us all learn how to build a classroom community that feels like family.FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES VISIT:  classroomnook.com/podcast/140Links & Resources Mentioned in the EpisodeBook on Amazon: If I Were the TeacherBook website: www.ifiweretheteacher.comConnect with Johnny on Social Media:www.twitter.com/johnnytiersmawww.instagram.com/mrjohnnyteachwww.instagram.com/ifiweretheteacher

How do you build a classroom community? This is the question Kayla tackles with OEA member Rachel Hsieh. Rachel is a District Mentor and Coach and previously worked as a fourth-grade teacher. Rachel now spends her time mentoring new educators and classroom community is one thing she mentors them on.    Rachel tells us that classroom community is all about belonging. Some strategies Rachel and Kayla talk about include class meetings, incorporating joy and humor, establishing and revisiting co-created classroom agreements/norms and routines, and spending some time with your students out of class, for example at lunchtime or recess. As a teacher, Rachel even wrote letters to her students.    Community doesn't mean people can't disagree but that there's a respectful way to approach disagreements, so Kayla and Rachel discuss options for repairing harm when something hurtful happens. They also emphasize the importance of creating a team with students' families and establishing open communication with families.   Resources: Designing for Care: Building + Maintaining a Humanized Classroom (video)- NEA/Jeffrey Austin & Kristal Jaaskelainen Back to School with PBS KIDS: Design an Inclusive Classroom - Mike Lang Instructional Equity: What, Why, and How in Equity in the Classroom - Rachel Hsieh The Power of Literature | Lessons For Elementary and High School - Rachel Hsieh & others

It's undeniable.  Students love to talk.Sometimes is hard to get them to stop talking. But, not all “talk” is created equal. It's one thing to have your students discuss what they did over the weekend, or what new video games they are in to.But - what teacher hasn't observed students sitting in a small group trying to discuss a new topic they are learning about or a book that they are reading.:::Crickets:::The truth is, when it comes to having deep, meaningful conversation - the kind of talk that moves learning forward - students often struggle to keep the conversation going.  Instead of asking thoughtful questions or making insightful comments and observations on what their peers are saying, students often find themselves trapped in the ‘yes' or ‘no' auto responder vortex when it comes to classroom discussions. And - it's hard for the conversation to flow both ways when students only answer with ‘yes' or ‘no'.When the conversation only flows in one direction, you miss out on a valuable opportunity to really dive deep into a topic.  That's why I feel it is really important to teach students how to have a meaningful and valuable conversations with you, the teacher, as well as with their peers.  That's where teaching students the art of accountable talk can be a game changer.Accountable talk is an intentional open-ended conversation where participants listen, add on to each other's comments, and use clarifying questions to make sure they are understanding what others are saying. When students participate in accountable talk, they can have richer and deeper conversations that go beyond surface-level thinking. For complete show notes visit:  classroomnook.com/podcast/57---------------------LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE:Grab my FREE Accountable Talk Posters inside the Members Resource Library under “Classroom Decor.”

How many times have we worked with a student and wondered if the program or intervention was what was finally going to work for a student? There are so many programs for so many different learning differences out there. Every single one says that they have the answer to learning difficulties, and know what to do to get students back on track in record time. Teachers hear these claims from interventionists, principals, trainers, even commercials. It all sounds too good to be true, and honestly, most of the time it is…. This whole system is incredibly frustrating for teachers who just want their students to learn. Today we are going to talk about the one thing that makes the most amount of impact on whether students progress or not...and what we can do to make sure we have that when we work with students.Subscribe & Review in iTunesAre you subscribed to my podcast? Imagine If you could increase student participation & build classroom community… at the same time.Sounds lovely, doesn't it?So often, teachers focus on teaching the content that our curriculum requires, but we often forget a very important core element of teaching. Relationships. Students learn best when they have a genuine relationship with their teacher and their classmate. If we fail to set that foundation, we are passing up incredible opportunities for learning and growth in our classroom. Imagine with me. You are working on teaching a new concept with your students and instead of having the same three students engaging in your classroom discussions, you have nearly the entire class interacting with one another.  And, as a bi-product of that student participation, you begin building a stronger classroom community. This learning utopia is within reach.  Trust me. Let me share several strategies to help you increase student participation so that you can reap the benefits it will provide for your classroom. And, as a bonus: you may just become the coolest teacher ever! For complete show notes visit:  classroomnook.com/podcast/55LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE:Episode 33: 4 Things to Stop Doing in Your Classroom-------------------------Pssst ... Summary:  In today’s episode, I share simple systems and activities you can implement in your classroom to continue strengthening your classroom community in a genuine way. These ideas go beyond the basic get-to-know-you and team-building activities and work to build sustainable ways to boost student engagement, motivation, and trust. If you are interested in more in-depth explanations of these strategies, additional ideas, and a set of templates to get you started right away, check out the October Edition of my Classroom Community Building Collection here. Key Points: Teacher systems to implement: Positive notes and calls home - create a system to jot down who you’ve contacted and a quick jot about the topic can help you see patterns. Who have you been noticing often, who have you been missing and do you need to be more intentional about focusing on the positive for, and what patterns do you notice in things your students are doing well? Patterns of motivation - particularly for students who need a boost in motivation or encouragement, pay attention to what motivates them. When are they the most engaged? Did a particular topic or activity type pep them up? Is it a pattern of more participation early in the morning or later in the day? How can you use these observations to boost their motivation at other times or during other activities? Weekly newsletters with student shout outs - similar to the positive notes and calls home, but this goes beyond just the student and their family. They get recognition from the whole class community, building their sense of pride and helping kids and families see that you value each of your students and their efforts. Classmate Encouragement Challenge - At the start of the week, give each student a post-it or notecard with a classmate’s name on it. Throughout the week, challenge them to observe that classmate for challenges in their learning. When they see their classmate needs encouragement on something, they jot down what they observed, a tip for growth, and a positive note or affirmation. On-the-fly stories...getting to know one another beyond the basics - Let your students see you as a real human being, beyond Mr. or Miss so-and-so! Share little life tidbits, memories of trips you’ve been on or experiences you had in school, family traditions, etc. Likewise, allow small, regular bits of time for students to share bits of their life, and connect with you and one another. Show them you value them as more than just a student, and help everyone really get to know one another. Wouldn't it be nice to multiply the impact of your effort? You can do just that by taking time at the beginning of the school year to create a positive community with your students. It takes a small amount of time upfront and yields a big payoff over the course of the school year. There is urgency to close the opportunity gap and to support all students in mastering grade level math content, and it may seem counterintuitive to take time away from academics to focus on culture. It's natural to feel pressure to get right down to business and start drilling content when school starts, and that pressure will be even higher this coming school year. However, there ARE compelling reasons to ‘go slow to go fast' and to take time to build relationships with and between students. Creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment before jumping into content yields a huge return on investment. In this episode, I'm sharing the top 3 benefits you'll receive when you prioritize community building in your classroom, especially at the beginning of the year. The emotional climate of the classroom is established by the teachers, and not the students! YOU get to decide what values are most important in your classroom. Things like kindness, patience, helpfulness, acceptance, and friendship are values you have to intentionally teach, promote, and reinforce on a daily basis, if you want them to be exemplified in your classroom. Establishing a positive climate begins with your Relationships with the children - which have to be thoughtfully cultivated! But it also includes child-to-child relationships. Relationship skills such as "how to be kind," "how to give a compliment," "how to make be a friend," and "how to be respectful of each other" --these things have to be explicitly taught, and intentionally promoted every single day by the teachers. If you want kids to care about each other, you have to talk about that! Talk about how they feel if one of them hurts the another - and how they need to treat each other in order to be liked and to be friends. Teachers can be very intentional about building into daily routines, a variety of positive, community-building features that help children learn to take care of each other and develop the social skills they need to succeed in life.
