When should we use acronyms in our content? Seems like a simple question that isn't asked often. I see it all the time, unfortunately: Articles full of alphabet soup. Every chance the writer gets, they'll use acronyms. Nonstop. All the time. Now, I don't want to overstate things here. There's a place to use acronyms when they are globally understood and sometimes we don't even know they are acronyms. For example, laser is an acronym that stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, according to the AP Stylebook. In 2017, the AP Stylebook approved the use of "they" as a singular pronoun to reflect the changing ways in which we use language to identify gender. For some, transitioning to a new, inclusive vocabulary has come naturally. For others, it has led to confusion and a struggle to keep up to date to ensure accurate coverage of those lying outside of the gender binary or those who do not identify as cisgender. We are joined by Kelly Bauer from Block Club Chicago, Tuck Woodstock from Sylveon Counseling and Kelly McBride from Poynter to explore how journalists can be inclusive and respectful of the trans community and gender diversity in their reporting. National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel persisted again with Jennifer Dobner of the Associated Press (the AP Newswire), on February 1, 2007. This was in response to a then-proposed bill, HB 2009, introduced by Rep. David Lujan, D-Phoenix, in Arizona, that sought to prohibit judges from granting custody to a parent who engages in "child bigamy" unless the judge determines that no threat exists to the child. In addition to trying to present the national movement's response to the bill for then-future AP-articles in that news cycle (and to address the falsely-worded idea of supposed "fleeing polygamy"), Mark Henkel was also again persisting to get the needed clarification in the AP Stylebook to include the necessary differentiating adjectives (such as "Mormon polygamy"). http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel was POST-interviewed on November 27, 2006, AFTER an article by the Associated Press (the AP Newswire) published nationwide on November 24, 2006. **This MUST-HEAR Interview*** is the third of 3 podcast audios regarding this article written by Reporter Jennifer Dobner. This interview discussed Mark Henkel's reaction and feedback on the interview, noting his observation of the need to help correct the AP Stylebook on the issue of reporter's needing to be allowed to differentiate "Mormon Polygamy" as a term, because of the mainstream "Mormons controlling the AP Stylebook." Mark Henkel gave the sound-bite, "The problem is, because the Mormon institution is controlling the definition, you can't say 'Non-Mormon Polygamist' because you can't say 'Mormon Polygamist.'" This point re-affirmed the connection to the past interviews, over the previous several months, with this same AP Reporter, in which Mark Henkel had persistently and repeatedly sought to get the AP Newswire's reports to clarify that UCAP, Unrelated Consenting Adult Polygamy, normal pro-polygamists around the country, had never (and always have never) had anything to do with the criminals or cults such as Warren Jeffs and the FLDS. This 3rd of these 3 podcast audios here reveals the friendly, professional, and even mutually laughing rapport between the reporter and Mark Henkel. The Reporter agreed that it made sense to move forward in exploring how to get such accuracy changes into the AP Stylebook, for the purpose of ensuring better brevity. She said, "It is a quagmire, I agree... ...I think it's a valid point... ...That's a really good suggestion, I'm writing it all down." She later concluded, "Everything you say is good fodder for another story." For more information about these 3 audios, listeners will want to be sure to also listen to the 1st and 2nd of these three podcast audios, posted in the previous 2 podcast episodes before this one. http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

Transcript This is Cirina Catania with OWC Radio. Steven Reed of Worship Leader Magazine is here with me. And I am fascinated by what you do and who you do it for. So can you tell our listeners exactly what that is? And then tell us about your recent trip. Sure. So excited to be here and thankful you guys are doing a podcast like this. So my name is Steven Reed, and I'm with Worship Leader Magazine. I'm with several other people at different times, my wife and I, and our family, do some music and travel, and do consulting for churches. But then we also take all of that knowledge, all that experience that we've had over decades of leading worship and being involved in churches and doing that consulting work and put that into Worship Leader Magazine, which is an online resource that has just so many decades. It's basically 30 years of magazines and conferences. And we host a podcast of our own that we do with different worship and church influencers. And then we also get to go to different churches and preach and teach and lead people in worship. So it's been an amazing journey, for sure.  And you're also an author.  I also write a lot, obviously, write for Worship Leader Magazine, and I've written a book that is about ready to be published. I'm writing another book that was written later, but it's going to be done before delegating because a lot of church people are struggling with learning how to delegate to other people. And so that's exciting to be getting that out. I've written plays, I've written all kinds of different stuff, and it was kind of funny because I felt like I struggled in English class, with grammar and all those things. So I'm thankful for spell check, thankful for my wife, who knows some grammar. And the AP Stylebook, right? That's right. Yeah, I think it's interesting. Delegating is a problem that all businesses have. It's very difficult for someone who is either an alpha or very creative or the leader of a team. Sometimes teaching people how not to micromanage can be very, very valuable. That's awesome that you're doing that. So you're multi-talented,

If you’ve ever had a disagreement with a client, partner or employee over the use of certain words in your marketing or PR campaign, there are two simple ways to remedy this situation. Use AP Style.   The Associated Press issues an updated book every year called the “AP Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law.” It’s available at http://www.apstylebook.com/. Basically, it provides a dictionary-like guide to correct spelling and grammar that is used by most media venues in the U.S. And since press releases usually follow this style anyway, why not use it to settle word disagreements? If your clients insist on using a certain word or style, point to the entry in the book and show the correct usage. You have set guidelines for everyone to follow, and the disagreements end.   Test it.   Another way to end disagreements about word usage is to test variations. Simply write your content and post two different versions. Monitor the results with Google Analytics or links and interactions you can track, and see which version received the most attention. You then have an uncontested winner!   Why spend time on dumb arguments over word usage, grammar and style? Instead, use one of these solutions to enhance overall results and focus on more important, core business activities. www.rembrandtwrites.com www.podcastandradio.com   Learn more about your ad choices. The Associated Press Stylebook has decided to join the sexual and moral revolution, and it's going to war with human nature. The new guidelines instruct that writers and editors, for example, should “avoid references to being born a boy or girl.”On the one hand, we must realize that one of the most important weapons in moral revolution is vocabulary. If you change the language, you in effect change the reality. On the other hand, we can be sure that they will not actually be successful in changing this fundamental reality of biological sex. As much as the modern sexual revolutionaries may want to destroy them, the terms and ideas of being male or female remain rather indispensable.Parents will continue to announce that a baby boy or a baby girl has been born. And that's because, thanks be to God, parents are not bound by the Associated Press Stylebook, nor will they be.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Words have power. How we speak and how we’re spoken to impacts our lives. This is especially true of mass media, which is our window on the world around us. Most news media, newspapers, magazines, broadcast new media, use what’s called the Associated Press Stylebook in Writing. It’s been around since 1953, and it’s designed to provide a uniformity of writing style. It’s mostly concerned with grammar and other language conventions. Every year, the Stylebook is updated to reflect changes in language uses. But this year’s changes are problematic. Instead of listing when to use numerals instead of spelling out numbers, or proper use of commas, or when to use abbreviations, the latest changes seem to reflect an agenda. As examples, the phrase "pro-life" is no longer used. Instead, it’s "anti-abortion." And the word "abortionist" is also discouraged, with the phrase "abortion provider" being recommended instead. Rachel Alexander, senior editor of The Stream, talks about why this is happening and what it means for journalists and media providers.

-Pat and Stu ponder Donald Trump's inaction on immigration policies enacted by the Obama Administration. Why didn't Trump take action on day one in office after running a campaign focused on enforcing immigration laws that had been ignored? Has he gone back to his democratic roots and gone down the path of “comprehensive immigration reform”? Pat explains that such reform undoubtedly means amnesty to illegal immigrants.-New York police are on the hunt for four activists who mounted a “Refugees Welcome” banner on the Statue of Liberty. The only lead they reportedly have is that one of the four is named “David”. So, if you know a “David” living in the Tri-State area, call NYPD now! (Actually, please do not do that.)-Venezuela has continued to plummet into chaos as its socialist policies have led to its starving citizens taking on a “Maduro” diet and eating flamingos to stay alive. The guys wonder if the birds taste like cotton candy… In all seriousness though, 82 percent of Venezuelans live below the poverty line, so we can pretty clearly discern that things have only gotten worse since the death of Hugo Chavez.-The Trump Administration has announced that they will lift federal transgender bathroom guidelines. Exactly what this means is still uncertain, but Pat and Stu agree that it is probably good news for conservatives who either champion the states' right to choose or a policy of “the gender of your junk” (Stu's exact words).-President Trump is a very well-spoken man… sort of… Okay, maybe he isn't. While visiting the new African-American History Museum in Washington, the President allegedly looked upon a slave auction block from Maryland and was quoted as saying, “Boy, that is just not good. That is not good.” On a pair of shackles, he supposedly remarked, “Boy, that is really bad. That is really bad.” Well, he's not wrong.-Major League Baseball pitchers no longer have to throw four pitches for an intentional walk. Now all the umpire needs is a signal from the dugout to send the batter to first base. The guys agree that this isn't messing with tradition too much. They can't say the same for the idea of giving both teams a free runner on second in extra innings to help shorten games.-A Massachusetts school district has halted a program that had police officers high-five students as they entered school. The rationale behind this action is that “some students might not be comfortable with police presence at the beginning of the day.” Pat, Stu, and Jeffy agree that we should have more of these programs in place to promote trust of such authority figures.-“Illegal Aliens” or “Undocumented Immigrants”? What is the proper way to address the millions of immigrants who have entered this country without proper authorization? According to the AP Stylebook, the only term to use is “Undocumented Immigrants." Stu makes the claim that "Illegal Aliens" sounds like these people actually entered the country illegally (which they did), whereas "Undocumented Immigrants" sounds like they are documented, but just left their papers at home.-Glenn Beck joins the program to tell the story of Booker T. Washington's emancipation from slavery and subsequent rise to prominence within the African-American community. Glenn implores listeners to read 'Up from Slavery', which eliminates all doubt about what sort of man Washington really was.-Why do cartoon characters wear gloves? The reason is not racism, as was surmised on a previous episode. The reason is that these humanized versions of animals required additional contrast to be seen properly in grainy, black-and-white footage.-The guys eat and rate new salsa and queso-flavored chips in the latest edition of SPOONS! Plus, ordinary vs. ornery, versing vs. versus, dishwater vs. ditchwater, the copyediting term stet, still hunts, and doozies. And if someone's a phony, is he a four-flusher or a floor-flusher? Maybe he's also a piece of work.FULL DETAILSHas anyone collected the stuff bald people say? How about a busy road grows no grass, or God only made so many perfect heads—the rest he covered in hair. Jorge Luis Borges deemed the 1982 Falklands War between the UK and Argentina as "a fight between two bald men over a comb."If someone seems too good to be true, he may be a four-flusher. This term for "a fake" or "a phony" comes from the poker slang four-flusher, meaning someone who has four cards of a suit but not yet the full flush. Some people confuse the term as floor-flusher, like in the 1954 Popeye cartoon about a plumbing mishap that makes humorous use of this expression. Is someone dull as ditchwater or dishwater? The more common phrase, which came into use much earlier, is ditchwater. What do you call the rear compartment of a station wagon or minivan? Many know it as the way back, not to be confused with the regular back, which is more likely to have seat belts. Who knows if Harry means "hairy," but we do know that the name Calvin means "bald." For example, between bacon, lettuce and tomato, bacon takes the prize by far for most Google hits, while lettuce brings up the rear. What'd lettuce do for the talent portion? What's the difference between Pandora's box and a can of worms? In Greek myth, the contents of the fateful box belonging to Pandora (literally, "all gifts" in ancient Greek) were a mystery. WIth a can of worms, on the other hand, you know the kind of tangled, unpleasant mess you're in for. It's worms. Does the possessive “s” go at the end of a proper name ending in “s”? What's the possessive of  a name like James -- James' or James's? Either's correct, depending on your style guide. The AP Stylebook says you just use an apostrophe, but others say to add the “s”. Your best bet is to choose a style and then be consistent. The term callow goes back to Old English calu, meaning "bald." The original sense of callow referred to young birds lacking feathers on their heads, then referred to a young man's down cheek, and eventually came to mean "youthful" or "immature."The word stet was borrowed from the Latin word spelled the same way, which translates "let it stand." Stet is commonly used by writers and editors to indicate that something should remain as written, especially after a correction has been suggested. Why do we refer to a draw in tic-tac-toe as a cat's game? Throughout the history of the game, cats have been associated with it. In some Spanish-speaking countries, for example, it's known as gato, or "cat." Photos and tests from the Mars Rover show an abundance of hematite, a dark red mineral that takes its name from the Greek word haima, meaning "blood." Another mineral, goethite, is named for the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, an amateur geologist whose collection of 18,000 minerals was famous throughout Europe. Is versing, meaning "to compete against someone," a real verb? In the past thirty years, this term has grown in popularity because versus, when spoken, sounds like a conjugated verb. So youngsters especially will talk about one team getting ready to verse another. Similar things happened with misunderstanding the plural forms of kudos (in ancient Greek, "glory") and biceps (literally, "two-headed") — both of those words were originally singular. To sell woof tickets, or wolf tickets, is African-American slang meaning "to threaten in a boastful manner."  Geneva Smitherman, a professor at Michigan State University who's studied the term, believes it has its origins in the idea of a dog barking uselessly. The term doozie, which refers to something good or first rate, may derive from daisy, as in the flower, sometimes considered an example of excellence. It might also have to do with the Italian actress Eleanora Duse, who toured the States in the 1890s.Goethe wasn't all about the minerals. He's also quoted as saying, "One ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words." Goethe also said, "Everything is simpler than one can imagine and yet complicated and intertwined beyond comprehension," which seems quite appropriate for a poet whose name graces rocks on another planet. What does it mean if someone's on a still hunt? This hunting term, for when you're walking quietly to find prey, has been conscripted by the political world to refer to certain kinds of campaign strategies. Can ordinary also mean "crude" or "crass"?
