POPULARITY
What's the ideal environment for making a comic? We toss the question to Sean Phillips and Jacob Phillips, and they ponder it for a moment. They've never experienced it, and they're not sure it's possible, or if it was, that they'd want it. Deadlines loom over all, making every comic an emergency. This urgency helps them accomplish their craft, and it must be working since, undoubtedly, everyone reading these words is craving their next collaboration, Houses of the Unholy (out August 14th from Image Comics). The father/son duo first worked together on the Criminal novella, My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, written by longtime writing partner Ed Brubaker. Initially, Sean was set to color the book, and he knocked out a couple of pages, but the deadline demanded an alternative strategy. He called on his son for assistance, and since then, Jacob Phillips has colored all the Brubaker/Phillips joints. For Father's Day, we asked Sean Phillips and Jacob Phillips to sit down with us and discuss their creative origins, collaborator origins, what Ed Brubaker expects from them these days, their need for affirmation, and why every book must be a race to the finish. Also, has Sean Phillips read The Enfield Gang Massacre yet? We begin this week's podcast by interrogating the dad holiday, relating our recent parental celebrations, and discussing our attendance at Washington, D.C.'s second annual DC/DOX Film Festival, where we saw Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, which included a moving and memorable conversation with Reeve's daughter, Alexandra Reeve Givens. Somehow, the recent season of MasterChef factors in as well. Please ensure you're following Sean Phillips on Instagram, Twitter, and his Website and Jacob Phillips on Instagram, Twitter, and his Website. As always, Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader, sponsors our Referrals segment. This week, we selected two comic book titles on the site that satisfy this episode's themes. We won't spoil what they are here, but if you click the links below, you'll be immediately escorted to those books. If crime does not pay, podcasting must be the greatest crime of all! Join the Runners as they commit a capital offense against ears and taste by diving into the most recent Criminal stories by Brubaker and Phillips. Archie, Conan, Shang-Chi, and the entire comics industry are all lovingly pastiched before we learn the sordid history of the murder of Teeg Lawless over the course of one cruel summer! Topics of discussion include Cruel Summer's successes and failures as a capstone Criminal story, the Runners' ranking of the Criminal oeuvre, and some Mario Kart strategizing. Covering Criminal: The Last of the Innocent #1-4, Special Edition #1, Criminal 10th Anniversary Special #1, My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, and Criminal (2019) #1-12 by Ed Brubaker (W), Sean Phillips (A), Elizabeth Breitweiser (C), Jacob Phillips (C), and more. Summer Break Archives - Graphic Novelties: My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies Cover B is on summer break, but we'll be back with brand new episodes in August. In the meantime, were sharing some segments from way back when that you may have missed. This week, it's our very first Graphic Novelties discussing My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, by (you guessed it) Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. It's all happening now on Cover B.
Comics in Motion is proud to partner with Lenovations Press! Check out their high quality independent comics here. However, before the show starts, there is a quick promo for an awesome kickstarter from G.E. Gallas. Follow her on Instagram and Twitter and support her kickstarter. This week, Tony welcomes back man whose middle name might legally be changed to podcaster, Dave Horrocks. Co-Founder of the Comics in Motion network. This week, the go deep into TWO books on one show. First up: A History of Violence (Click here for the movie review with Chris and Dave) John Wagner, Vince Locke It's just another quiet day in small-town, USA, until a couple of wanted killers walk into Tom McKenna's diner looking for trouble. When Tom gives them more than they bargained for, he and his family are thrust into the kind of white-hot media spotlight that attracts a lot of attention - and questions about Tom's past. ls he really an easygoing small town guy, or is there something more? AND Pulp Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips (Artist), Jacob Phillips (Colors) A gorgeous original graphic novel from the best-selling creators of Kill Or Be Killed, My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies and Criminal. Max Winters, a pulp writer in 1930s New York, finds himself drawn into a story not unlike the tales he churns out at 5 cents a word - tales of a wild west outlaw dispensing justice with a six-gun. But will Max be able to do the same, when pursued by bank robbers, Nazi spies, and enemies from his past? One part thriller, one part meditation on a life of violence, Pulp is unlike anything the award-winning team of Brubaker and Phillips have ever done. A celebration of pulp fiction, set in a world on the brink. And another must-have hardback from one of comics most-acclaimed teams. (less) Comics in Motion is now a Humble Bundle Partner. If you want to talk with Tony about comics or to suggest any future shows, please connect with him on Twitter @Tricycleboombox. Cameron gives his friend Hannah her first comic book ever! My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies is a gritty crime-noir book that introduced Hannah to the world of comic books. Hannah loved the romanticism of addicts within this text and the crazy twist ending at the end of the book. It's sufficient to say that she'll definitely pick up another. Comics won't just break your heart. Comics will just kill you. Hal Crane should know, he's been around since practically the beginning. Stuck at an out-of-town convention, waiting to receive a lifetime achievement award, Hal's weekend takes us on a dark ride through the secret history of a medium that's always been haunted by crooks, swindlers, and desperate dreamers. BAD WEEKEND-the story some are already calling the comic of the year from its serialization in CRIMINAL #2 and #3-has been expanded, with several new scenes added and remastered into a hardcover graphic novel, in the same format as ED BRUBAKER and PHILLIPS' ( KILL OR BE KILLED, FATALE, CRIMINAL) bestselling MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES. This gorgeous package is a must-have, an evergreen graphic novel every true comics fan will want to own. Brubaker is in conversation with actor/comedian Paul Scheer and film director Nicholas Winding Refn.
Weekly Pull Highlights Goddess Mode #6 Assassin Nation #4 Superman: Year One #1 Crucified #1 Lab Raider #1 Age Of X-Man Nextgen #5 Chris shares some interesting new indie number 1's, while Tee wraps up DC's Goddess Mode (albeit a little... overwhelmed). The news is a little light this week, but we do get a good chuckle over some savage marketing by Marvel. We wrap up this week with a brand new segment called Graphic Novelties, where we discuss and review "My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies," an OGN by Ed Brubaker.
Heroes Con, Blues for Lady Day and Basquiat: A Graphic Novel by Paolo Parisi from Laurence King Publishing, Gates of Plasma from Carlos Gonzalez from Floating World Comics, Marvel Comics #1000, Absolute Carnage, Silver Surfer: Black by Donny Cates and Tradd Moore, Curtain Call by Wilfrid Lupano and Rodolphe Guenoden from LionForge, Grand Abyss Hotel by Marcos Prior and David Rubin from Archaia/BOOM!, My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips from Image, Fearless Dawn: Shorts #1 by Steve Mannion, Junji Ito's Shiver from Viz, A Walk Through Hell, plus a whole mess more!

Brian came back to reading Gideon Falls and has finished 2 volumes, read everything available from Copperhead, and is well into reading Sweet Tooth in digital. John and Brian both finished watching Dead to Me and give it high praise. John also continued watching Barry and Game of Thrones. Brian continued watching Seattle Mariners games and watched Fury on 4k. Both guys played video games, with John playing MBA 2K19 and Brian started playing the new season of Diablo 3! This week the show welcomes special guests Eamon & Lish Hill, a married couple who are turning their love of horror and comics into a new project. Everything from our favorite comics and horror films, to a discussion on westerns and what artists move us. We also cover the ramifications of bat-penis and erupt into a spirited talk about pro-wrestling! Eamon & Lish bring their awesome style and humor to CREAM giving us a seriously kick ass episode. We also look at Murder Falcon by Daniel Warren Johnson, My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies by Ed Brubaker & Sean Philips. That and so much more!
In this episode, Robert discusses Batman: Gotham Noir, a 2001 DC Elseworlds graphic novel that represents one of the early works in the Brubaker and Phillips partnership. The team's interpretation of Gotham City in 1949 is a great read as it is one their few forays into the superhero genre and contains many of the plot devices that would be used again throughout their subsequent comics. A year later, both Brubaker and Phillips worked on a single issue of DC's regular monthly Batman book, Batman #603. This episode also contains a brief discussion on the upcoming graphic novel My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies and some exciting news about a new monthly Criminal book coming in January.
