Richard Vine's debut novel transports readers to the sharp, seedy world of Manhattan art shows, broken hearts and criminal enterprise. What starts as helping out a murder investigation soon becomes much more for art-dealer (and friend of victim) Jackson Wyeth. "SoHo Sins" is crafted by Vine with a knowing pen, one that is encouraged by a wealth of career experience in the art game and inspired by the busted-up detective narrators of noirs gone by. LTP is excited to be back and kick-starting a new round of reviews with this 2016 entry from Richard Vine and Hard Case Crime.
This week, I was thrilled to welcome a longtime Twitter mutual who's a huge cinephile with outstanding taste, a veritable encyclopedia of Film Noir, & an author as well. Christa Faust writes crime novels, comics, & tie-ins. She worked in the Times Square peep booths, as a professional dominatrix, & in the adult film industry, both behind & in front of the cameras. Her forthcoming Hard Case Crime novel THE GET OFF, the final book in the Angel Dare trilogy, is set in the world of rodeo & will be out in February of 2025.From the 2 years she spent following rodeos around the United States for her upcoming novel to her love of John Huston's THE MISFITS & movies about the sport in general, in this richly fascinating conversation, Christa gives us an insider's view of what it's like to train, live, & work in rodeo. Filled with interesting asides about topics deeply entrenched within it, including traumatic brain injuries, the vital role of women within the rodeo community, & metaphors involving the death of rugged individualism & working in Hollywood, I learned so much from this conversation & I know you will too. Spending a bulk of our time on THE MISFITS, we also touch on THE LUSTY MEN (which listeners will remember was covered in our S4 Robert Mitchum episode too), plus the contemporary films NEON BULL, BULL, & THE RIDER.Originally Posted on Patreon (8/7/24) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/109652602Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveShop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi

Can the main character of his book ever achieve full carny acceptance? Why doesn't the magical child at the center of the mystery infuriate your hosts? All these questions and more will be explored in this episode of Bad Books for Bad People. BBfBP theme song by True Creature. After releasing The Colorado Kid and Joyland via the Hard Case Crime imprint, Stephen King made his grand debut into the world of hard-boiled crime fiction with Mr. Mercedes. The first in a trilogy, the 2014 novel introduced readers to Bill Hodges, a crusty, retired detective who finds his golden years interrupted by the taunts of a psychopathic killer he failed to apprehend. Join the Losers as they detail the book's origins, how it differs from the author's previous forays into crime, and the ways in which it reflects evolving societal fears about domestic terrorism. They also discuss the book's messy vision of a post-recession America and its musings on class, second chances, and the nature of evil. It's also one of King's poundcakiest books, so prepare to blush. Follow us on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Patreon Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The Losers head down to North Carolina for a summer job at Joyland. Together, they discuss Stephen King's second Hard Case Crime novel, weighing in on the era, the crime at the center, and how it connects to an iconic work in King's Dominion. Spiritually, of course. "The Triumph of the Spider Monkey" is the chaotic narrative of Bobby Gotteson, whose repressive lust and murderous rage reach their fever-pitch following a hubris-led journey to California. All but disowned by its author, Joyce Carol Oates, we crack the covers on a new season of LTP with a look at this stylish, often brutal novel, recently resurrected from obscurity by Hard Case Crime. We also take a look at "Love, Careless Love", Oates' never-before collected companion novella.

The Losers return to Maine and take a ferry out to Moose-Lookit Island, where they learn about the mystery of The Colorado Kid. It's a slim tale with very little answers, but they quickly learn there's a lot of meat to chew on. Hell, you might even choke on it! Keep all that in mind as you join the Losers for their first book episode of Season 7. Together, they discuss the origins of the Hard Case Crime imprint, how Stephen King got involved, the ways this peculiar parable is built on hard-boiled tropes, and how it all aligns with From a Buick 8 and beyond. Ian Fleming (1908-1964) always wanted to be a writer. Not an "author," as he put it, and not someone in the "Shakespeare stakes," but someone who wrote for money and pleasure. In developing his enduring character James Bond, he managed to accomplish both. In this episode, Jacke takes a look at the life and career of the most famous spy novelist in history. PLUS we look at an American spy novel, Sam Greenlee's The Spook Who Sat by the Door, which was poised for success - until some terrified authorities shut it down. Additional listening ideas: Like genre fiction? Try our episode on classic crime novels with Hard Case Crime editor Charles Ardai. Really like genre fiction? We talked about reviving (and revising) Westerns with Anna North. Fan of twentieth-century British novelists? Maybe try our episode on Roald Dahl or our look at Graham Greene's The End of the Affair with Laura Marsh. Help support the show at patreon.com/literature or historyofliterature.com/shop. We covered The Colorado Kid. We covered Joyland. And now, we're covering Stephen King's 3rd Hard Case Crime novella, Later. Join your usual hosts, Alex and Rich French as they discuss the newest thriller in this sneak peek at our Patreon-exclusive series, Troubled with Extra Syrup. PATREON is where you can reach our Bonus Episodes that come out monthly!
"Later" marks the third and most recent crime story written by Stephen King for the Hard Case Crime label. Offering readers a predictable mix of the supernatural and police procedural, the horror master's latest tale continues his career penchant for coming-of-age narratives with soul-searching themes. Josh and Scott break down the narrative and weigh its subtle strengths as series three of LTP picks up momentum.
Wow! So, in supporting a black-owned business online, yours truly learned a little about how intolerant and uptight we are in the Midwest about race. Granted, I already knew this somewhat, but not to the extent I witnessed. After the break, I come in hard about some new vinyl I've acquired starting with the latest Greta Van Fleet album The Battle at Garden's Gate that I picked up as my first of their records. I like it...a lot. I have heard them prior to now and I've even seen them perform live on SNL, but I wasn't too awful into it. I will say, though, I think they're a pretty solid group instrumentally and his voice is even growing on me some. This is my fave tune and the album opener. It's interesting watching "kids" rock in a 60s-70s style in 2021. I guess the real point is that I just need to "STFU Boomer" and enjoy some good modern rock. There's pretty much zero denying the fact that these fellas are super talented. In addition, I picked up a couple of classics. First up, Rage Against the Machine's self-titled debut. Personally, I think this to be one of the more important records from the whole time I was in college (yes, I'm dating myself there). There's so much about this record's sound and feel that still applies right now. Maybe even moreso. How big is/was it? Just give this Wikipedia entry a read. Finally, I picked up the second major release from Jane's Addiction called Ritual de lo Habitual. I don't go for imports too often for a number of reasons. They tend to be poorly pressed, they're more expensive for no reason, and I guess I just like buying originals. I made an exception here as I have had a tough time finding it. I'm glad I did. It's outstanding just as I recall it. Watched the first Kingsman film the other night with my wife. We loved it. I snagged a double boxset of the two films on 4K Blu-Ray for...get this...$5. So happy at this. The digital codes even still work. Anyway, we're on board with Eggsy and the gang big time and looking forward to the second film and eventually the third (which is a prequel I hear). Good silly action seemingly created for me. Not a surprise as I'm a Mark Millar fan big time and I may have to check out his original comic version. Of course, the wife was entirely on board when she saw Colin Firth on the cover. I've watched a few other new things I talk about. On the reading front, I'm super excited about my new Stephen King book from the "Hard Case Crime" publisher. I like these pulp fiction novels he's written. I read Joyland and The Colorado Kid and now it's time for Later. Wait, what? That's the title. Anyway, he does a great job on these of writing some crime fiction with just a dash of Stephen King weirdness thrown in. Can't get enough. I blather on a little more, but that's all the links I think you'll need for this entry. Two more episodes until #100. Can you feel the excitement? Me neither. Hi, welcome back to the Constant Reader Podcast, with me your host, Richard Sheppard. Last month's guest, the mighty Paul Tremblay has recently re-released two of his earlier novels, The Little Sleep and No Sleep Til Wonderland through Titan publishing. They're wonderful stuff, very offbeat, and will that great Titan design that I love. The Firestarter film will officially commencing filming in Ontario next month, with Zac Efron in the lead. Stephen King has sent them a message of love, so we'll see how it turns out. There is certainly a great film somewhere in the novel. Other than that, not much news. Later has come out from Hard Case Crime, and we're looking forward to discussing that on the show soon. Lisey's Story is still coming out at the beginning of June on apple TV, and I'm definitely going to be talking about that adaptation of one of my least favourite king novels over the Summer. But now, to today's guest. Andy Stanton is an author who lives in North London. He studied English at Oxford but they kicked him out. This stroke of good luck put him on the road to fame and fortune as the creator of Mr Gum, an anarchic curmudgeon in a series of best-selling children's books. Apt that we should talk about King's best book about children, growing up and facing monsters, I suppose. As you can probably tell from the running time, Andy is passionate, verbose, funny and incisive, so I took the opportunity to speak to him a little longer than usual. This is a real deep dive, so take out hands as we explore the darker side of Derry Maine. A massive thank you to Stephen L Parkes, who was responsible for editing this behemoth. He's the best in the business. This episode was hosted by Richard Sheppard, with research and support from Dr Linda Sheppard, and technical and sound production by Professor Stephen L. Parkes. Nästa avsnitt: Dean R Koontz I slutet av april blir det Dean R Koontz-special! Johan läser "Midnight" (1989) och Magnus läser "Devoted" (2020). Hosts John Cribbs & Christopher Funderburg discuss the upcoming reprint of Donald E. Westlake's Enough, a pair of novellas that have been given the much more appropriate title Double Feature in conjunction with the re-release. The two works, A Travesty and Ordo, have been out of print for nearly 40 years despite ranking among Westlake's very best work. The breathless episode touches on everything from the history of Los Angeles as depicted in crime literature, the technicalities of locked room mysteries, the relationship of Westlake's work to that of Charles Willeford as well as the strange moments when pulp fiction seems to transcend the pulp genre and transform into legit literature. Romero for Tor's Summer 2020 release of The Living Dead. Our intrepid hosts also briefly talk about HBO's debut episode of Watchmen and Adam Nevill's latest folk horror novel, The Reddening. Then, the group breaks out into a spoiler-filled exploration of John F.D. Authors on the Air host Pam Stack presents this very special edition of IN CONVERSATION with Lawrence Block and Wallace Stroby, two of our best writers of mystery, suspense and thrillers. About Lawrence Block: Lawrence Block has been writing crime, mystery, and suspense fiction for more than half a century. He has published in excess (oh, wretched excess!) of 100 books, and no end of short stories. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., LB attended Antioch College, but left before completing his studies; school authorities advised him that they felt he’d be happier elsewhere, and he thought this was remarkably perceptive of them. His earliest work, published pseudonymously in the late 1950s, was mostly in the field of midcentury erotica, an apprenticeship he shared with Donald E. Westlake and Robert Silverberg. The first time Lawrence Block’s name appeared in print was when his short story “You Can’t Lose” was published in the February 1958 issue of Manhunt. The first book published under his own name was Mona (1961); it was reissued several times over the years, once as Sweet Slow Death. In 2005 it became the first offering from Hard Case Crime, and bore for the first time LB’s original title, Grifter's Game. About Wallace Stroby: SOME DIE NAMELESS is Wallace's current book. He is an award-winning journalist and the author of the novels THE DEVIL'S SHARE, SHOOT THE WOMAN FIRST, KINGS OF MIDNIGHT, COLD SHOT TO THE HEART, GONE 'TIL NOVEMBER, THE HEARTBREAK LOUNGE and THE BARBED-WIRE KISS, which was a finalist for the 2004 Barry Award for Best First Novel. A New Jersey native, he's a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore. For 13 years, he was an editor at The Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger, Tony Soprano's hometown newspaper. authorsinterviewscrime fictionlegendsstorytellingwriterswriterscommunitypodcast

In 1896, an enterprising man named Frank Munsey published the first copy of Argosy, a magazine that combined cheap printing, cheap paper, and cheap authors to bring affordable, high-entertainment fiction to working-class folks. Within six years, Argosy was selling a half a million copies a month, and the American fiction market would never be the same. In this special episode of The History of Literature, we’re joined by Charles Ardai, a man who helped to resurrect one of twentieth-century pulp fiction’s brightest stars: the hardboiled crime novel, with its brooding heroes, high-energy prose, fast-paced plots, and seductive painted covers. His publishing line, Hard Case Crime, brings back forgotten and never-published manuscripts of old masters as well as new novels by contemporary authors like Stephen King and Christa Faust-- and returns readers to the days when a dangling cigarette and a tumbler of whiskey was almost enough to make you forget the dame who nearly got you killed. Almost. Authors discussed include Stephen King, Paul Auster, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain, E. Howard Hunt, Charles Ardai, Christa Faust, Arthur Conan Doyle, William Blake, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Robert Browning, Mickey Spillane, Robert Bloch, Donald Westlake/Richard Stark, Michael Crichton/John Lange, J.K. Rowling, Lawrence Block, Erle Stanley Gardner, Madison Smartt Bell, Robert Parker, Ed McBain, David Dodge, Edgar Rice Burroughs, James Joyce, and Charles Dickens. Charles Ardai, novelist and founder of Hard Case Crime, sits down with Daniel Ford and Sean Tuohy to talk about his website, which hard-boiled detective he'd like to work with, and why up-and-coming writers shouldn't be afraid of rejection.
Christa Faust's latest novel, MONEY SHOT, distills all the darkest and most addictive spirits of 1940's film noir and 1950's hard-boiled into a lethal elixir. Such a statement is necessarily contradictory, for Faust's unique blend of a noir atmosphere of inescapable doom with the campy, two-fisted action of Gold Medal-era pulp, gives us characters who die so that they might be reborn, and action that destroys in order to redeem. Protagonist Angel Dare, former porn star and savvy businesswoman, kind-hearted sucker and cold-hearted avenging angel, is the very embodiment of contradictions, yet makes so much sense she'll break your heart. She is the antidote to the uni-dimensionality of today's genre fiction, capable because of her flaws, vulnerable because of her toughness, and of a moral complexity few can touch and none can sully. Far from being anachronistic, MONEY SHOT is a thoroughly modern tale, the work of an author who brilliantly revisits the past in order to reinvigorate a literary tradition and create a new sort of femme fatale who can walk, or work, today's mean streets. No wonder Hard Case Crime chose it as the first title in the line by a female author. This podcast is brought to you by Clute and Edwards of www.noircast.net. DEADLY BELOVED, released in December 2007 by Hard Case Crime, is the culmination of Max Allan Collins's eclectic and prolific career. Its tight pacing and razor-sharp scene cuts recall Max's talent as a filmmaker. Its visual prose speaks to his experience writing the Dick Tracy comic strip, the Ms. Tree comic book series, and the justly famous graphic novel THE ROAD TO PERDITION. The vivid evocation of the city of Chicago, and the subtle references to its mob past, remind us of Max's uncanny ability to build fiction on fact--as he has done so successfully with his Nate Heller historical thriller series. In short, DEADLY BELOVED could only have been written by Max Allan Collins. These are the topics addressed in the first half of this double-length holiday-bonus episode, while the second half allows Max to detail his current projects--as the inheritor of Mickey Spillane's unfinished manuscripts, the creative genius behind a series of graphic novels that investigate real-life crimes in the world of comics, and (perhaps) the feature film adapter of his own novels. This podcast is brought to you by Clute and Edwards of www.noircast.net. Author and editor Charles Ardai is a double-feature unto himself. In the first half of this special hour-long episode Richard Aleas (Ardai's anagrammatical authorial alter ego) discusses his Edgar and Shamus Award nominated novel LITTLE GIRL LOST: its literary predecessors--from William Blake's poetry to period pulp, and its complex vision of justice. In the second half of the interview, Ardai the entrepreneur speaks of his imprint Hard Case Crime: the reasons for its creation, the decision to commission fresh artwork from some of the finest painters of the classic era of paperback originals, and the particular challenges of editing and publishing a line that mixes period reprints with new titles while maintaining a consistent noir worldview. Abundantly clear are the intelligence and vision that have made Ardai the reigning Pasha of Pulp publishing, and Hetman of Hard-Boiled writing.
