New Orleans, Louisiana is home to some of America's greatest musical traditions, and plays an outsized influence on the evolution of everything from jazz through to r&b, rock and funk. Today, the city is still legendary for its second line brass bands and brightly costumed Mardi Gras Indians. But if you've rolled through New Orleans on pretty much any night in the last 30 years, you've probably heard another sound—the clattering, booming, hip-shaking, chant-heavy roll of bounce, a form of hip-hop music, dance and culture unique to the Crescent City. Pulling from the national mainstream but remaking it the way that only New Orleans can, bounce has become a sonic touchstone for an entire generation of residents. For this Hip Deep edition, Afropop digs into the close-knit scene, talking to dancers, producers, MCs, and managers from over 30 years of bounce, all to explore the beat that drives New Orleans—and to find out what it means to the people who bring it to life.
The Kings went into New Orleans and got their asses handed to them by the Pelicans. They were unfortunately without their star point guard De'Aaron Fox for the 2nd game in a row, and for the 2nd game in a row, it was noticeable. That must have been why they got destroyed right? No, because the Pelicans were also without Jonas Valančiūnas, Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. The Kings simply got outworked, out-hustled and outplayed by the Pelicans. The Kings were a step slow, didn't show the right amount of aggression and intensity to win this game. It's unfortunately another game in which the Kings couldn't beat a team that were on a 2nd night of a back to back. For as good as the Kings have been this year, they just can't win these games for whatever reason. Despite the demoralizing loss, because of the wins they banked in earlier, they have a bit of cushion to work with and it doesn't send them plummeting down the standings. And if you told Kings fans that they would be 3rd in the standings at this point of the season, many of them would be ecstatic. The Kings didn't have a lot of time to pick up the pieces from that loss as they headed to Houston to face the Rockets the next day, and they responded. Mike Brown had said in the press conference after the Pelicans loss he wanted to see how the Kings were going to respond to adversity after a demoralizing loss. Well the Kings came into Houston with a sense of urgency and blow out the Rockets in decisive fashion. They needed a game like this to reestablish who they were get some confidence back. Call it a "get right" game, and while yes, it is the Rockets, who showed why they're one of the worst teams in the league, the Kings showed up with a sense of purpose and took care of business. It's something that a good team has to be able to do consistently, and the Kings did just that. The Kings will face the Rockets again to close out this road trip, let's see if the Kings can close out the road trip with a win. After surviving a Thirty-Five foot fall with his close friend August 16th, 2016. Four surgeries and a year of rehab later; Mansa Obi has emerged from the ashes to finish his life's work. Known for his creation of Authentic Bounce (not to be confused with "Classic" Bounce) seductive melodies, blunt--commentary and creation of the bass-less genre. Mansa hopes to continue to push the cultures forward sonically with his four volume album "Anthology". As a DJ & Producer Mansa showcases an incredible attention to detail,: with cuts like “Liberation,” alternating his rap flow with an incredibly soulful hook; while bravely placing the production in the background, to let the vocals function as rhythm and bass. Only to surprise us with rare 3 am New Orleans Bounce releases. Not many artist can do this, correction not many artist can think like this and to create such a compelling sound. Mansa Obi strikes for an organic and direct sound, no tricks, just honesty and talent, as it also appears from the reflective and personal lyrics. Hands down, some of the most original and daring hip hop I have heard period; somewhere in between the old school (samples, soul influences…) and the new (tight analog beats, fat low end). https://twitter.com/nftmansa https://shop.mimexmime.xyz https://www.mimexmime.xyz https://objkt.com/profile/nftmansa/created --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thewrongadvicepod/support

Covid changed a lot for a lot of people. Bezos is killing it more than ever. And whoever owns Purell. But for the rest of us things went off the rails. With the March lockdown looming, standup comedian and yoga guru Ari Shaffir decided to take his dog and go live with his parents out in the suburbs. In part 3 of my 2020 Year in Review podcast, I talk about living with my parents. My NYC apartment didn't seem like the best place to be forced to stay inside all day. So I left the city I love to have a unique and lovely time with my mom and dad. To get to hang out with your mother and father for that amount of time, as an adult, is an experience I'll never get to have again and I'm eternally thankful to that bat dude in China for making it happen. My dog loved it, too. All she did all day was figure out ways to escape the yard and run into the woods to chase deer. While my friends were busy signing hundred million dollar deals, I was busy nailing mesh fencing to trees. Wouldn't trade places. And I pondered that every afternoon, drinking wine on the deck while watching the sunset with my mom. Please sign up for my Patreon.com/AriShaffir for bonus content. For when you're too old to party but you still want to catch a buzz in the burbs, think rosay. It's the wine you're afraid to admit you love. And our other sponsor, Outfield Fencing. When you want to keep your dog in the yard until the moment you go inside for 2 freaking minutes to go pee, think outfield fencing. It's strong, totally destructible if your dog chews on it a little bit or a deer runs into it, and easy to run under. Outfield fencing. It's really just for baseball. Crossfaded Bacon and Mad Decent Records presentMad Decent Worldwide Radio #30: BOUNCE ITMixed by EmyndI started listening to Bounce music about two years ago and, over the past couple years, have acquired a pretty extensive collection of CDs, MP3s, and records of this really rich music. For those unfamiliar with Bounce, it is a fairly unique strain of club-oriented hip-hop that originated in New Orleans sometime around 1991 with MC TT Tucker's "Where Dey At." Almost 20 years later, Bounce still dominates the urban club and block party scene in New Orleans with very little major label backing. Just as Baltimore Club is based on the Lyn Collins' "Think" break and the Gaz "Sing Sing" break, Bounce beats are based on samples from The Showboy's "Drag Rap" (aka "Triggerman") and Derek B's "Rock The Beat" drum break (more commonly known as "the Brown Beat"). The best club music seems almost always to thrive on calculated simplicity, and Bounce is no exception, relying on MC work that is based on simple call and response chants, straightforward rhyme schemes/patterns, and repetitive dance refrains. My buddy Noz-- http://www.cocaineblunts.com -- has helped me learn a lot about this music and several years ago (right after Katrina), he put together a really great collection of earlier Bounce songs that you can download (http://www.cocaineblunts.com/blunts/?p=690). Also, the first podcast on New Orleans rap has got some good stuff on it as well.In contrast to Noz's collection of songs, I made my mix as an effort to put people onto some more recent New Orleans Bounce songs and artists that they likely aren't very familiar with. As you'll notice pretty quickly, I've kept the mixing and DJing to a real minimum and tried to move pretty quickly from song to song to fit in as much stuff is possible. There isn't a real rhyme or reason for most of the selections on here. They're mostly just a bunch of Bounce songs I really like, and I'm hoping some of y'all will enjoy this stuff enough to go and support some of these artists. I've provided links wherever possible to help make that search as easy as I could because a lot of these folks have a pretty strong presence on Myspace. Please hit these dudes up on their Myspace, support their events, and buy whatever you can from them. Tracklisting:1. Intro2. DJ Jubilee "Get Ready, Ready!" (1997) 3.
