On the 55th episode of “Great Dane Nation,” Morten is joined by Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist and coaching legend Dick Vermeil (06:54 – 01:04:17). But first, he checks in with TommyFreezePops (Tom Carroll) for this week's edition of the “Opening Kick” (01:06 – 06:54). Morten reacts to an epic game between the Chiefs and Ravens from this past weekend, and explains why he thinks Lamar Jackson is the MVP of the league through two weeks of the season. We then move to our interview with Dick Vermeil, where he discusses a wide range of topics: his involvement in the wine business, and the history behind his company, “Vermeil Wines” (07:41); his coaching style, and the difference between delegating and designating (13:53); Morten having teammates on the Chiefs that weren't born when he started playing (15:49); knowing when to release a player, and remaining close with many players he has cut (16:46); being the first official special teams coach in NFL history (18:12); taking over an Eagles franchise in the late 1970s that was a losing program, and what it took to turn them into NFC Champions (19:38); why the NFL needs to do a better job helping its former players with medical assistance as they get older (24:04); the amazing story of Vince Papale making the team in Philly (24:46); a review of “American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story” (26:18); his love for underdogs, and why London Fletcher should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (27:05); what a Gold Jacket would mean to him (27:44); why Tom Flores getting inducted helped clear the way for Dick, and the various high-profile coaches stumping for him as a candidate (29:12); the hilarious story of David Baker's phone call to let Dick know he was a finalist (30:43); reminiscing about the late, great Frank Gansz Sr. (31:58); why he stepped away from coaching after winning the Super Bowl with a historically great St. Louis Rams team in 1999 (36:59); why he came out of retirement to coach the Chiefs in the early 2000s (38:48); working his players so hard in St. Louis, there was almost a “mutiny,” and why things were different in Kansas City (40:15); why Patrick Mahomes could go down as the finest quarterback to ever play in the NFL (42:45); the state of the Rams, his relationship with Sean McVay, and why Matthew Stafford will be great in L.A. (44:13); why he doesn't think Doug Pederson should've been fired in Philadelphia (47:03); and this week's edition of “The Name Game,” featuring Kurt Warner, Ron Jaworski, Trent Green, Marshall Faulk, Tony Gonzalez, Jared Allen, Harold Carmichael and Will Shields (48:45).Then we move to this week's edition of “Morten's Fast 5,” where our Hall of Famer makes picks for the five biggest games of the football weekend (01:05:13 – 01:12:08). Morten gives his picks for Buccaneers at Rams (01:05:51), Saints at Patriots (01:07:05), Packers at 49ers (01:08:36), Chargers at Chiefs (01:09:33), and Washington Football Team at Bills (01:10:49).Finally, “Morten's Game Winner” returns – a weekly monologue from The Great Dane on his biggest takeaway of the week. This week, Morten reflects on his relationship with Coach Vermeil, and explains why he's had a profound impact on every single one of his former players (01:12:08).

Buffalo went into Arizona on Monday Night with ice in their veins, and walked away with a big victory over the defending NFC Champions, the San Francisco 49ers. A much better way to leave the same stadium that had them in heartbreak several weeks ago.The Bills, from start to finish, were relentless on the 49ers, and didn't leave much room for optimism after the first quarter. Buffalo dominated offensively, with Josh Allen having his way with this 49ers secondary. 4 touchdowns and nearly 400 yards by air is a solid performance against a Top 10 ranked defense. Speaking of defense, the Bills continued to impress, in both run defense, and passing. San Francisco's Raheem Mostert was the most important facet of this offense heading into this game. Buffalo brought the heat, and made San Francisco one dimensional, and that's right where they wanted Nick Mullens to be. It was an impressive game plan, and it paid off in dividends. Buffalo plays Pittsburgh this week, who are coming off of their first loss of the season against the Washington Football Team. They'll either play against a very angry, yet relieved team who doesn't have to worry about being perfect anymore, or a spiritually defeated team, whose loss last week will spiral them out of control a tad more. Regardless, this is a great opportunity to make a statement on prime time football against one of the best teams in the NFL today.

Despite jumping out to a two-score lead and knocking New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees from the contest, the San Francisco 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan failed to take advantage of the situation -- or successfully move the ball -- resulting in the Niners' third blowout loss in as many weeks.  Niner Noise Podcast hosts Chris Wilson (@cgawilson) and Robert Morrison (@rs_morrison) discuss a pair of excellent showings from the SF 49ers' two first-round rookies -- wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw -- in what was otherwise a lackluster performance by the reigning NFC Champions. The duo then breaks down everything that went wrong in NOLA, and what actions should be taken over the Niners' bye week, which Shanahan has finally reached after a month of passive and predictable play-calling. 304: Seahawks first game showcases new dynamics on offense and defense

Anyone questioning if Pete Carroll could drastically shift the dynamics of the offense and defense from last season to this season got their concerns answered in the Seahawks Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Their 38-25 victory featured an aggressiveness on offense rarely seen in previous years. No give up plays on 2nd and long, going for it all on fourth down while the Seahawks had the lead, and Russell Wilson looking as though he was in complete command of the offense. Defensively, Carroll used Jamal Adams to generate pressure in a way we haven't seen him use that position in the past. We saw nickel and dime defenses. With those exciting changes, there remain areas of significant concern. With the Seahawks leading by three scores and a relatively immobile quarterback in Matt Ryan, Seattle's defensive line still wasn't able to get into the backfield with any regularity. Late in the game we didn't see punishing runs by Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde to help put the game away. Atlanta had early success running the football and in the second half they completely abandoned the idea testing Seattle's defensive tackles. Against the Patriots, the Seahawks front seven will be tested defensively. New England ran the ball early against the Dolphins and then opened up a passing game in the second half that allowed them to move the ball very effectively against Miami. The Patriots strength on defense is in their secondary, but containing Russell Wilson has never been something New England has had much success with. Let's see if the trend of what we saw on offense against the Falcons continues in Week 2. In the second half of the show take a look down at the 2019 NFC Champions in the cellar of the NFC West. We discuss the new club that Russell Wilson belongs to and another player who will be joining that club in the near future. The Philadelphia Eagles are the 2017-2018 NFC Champions after beating the Minnesota Vikings at The Linc by a score of 38-7! This was a amazingly dominant game by the offense and defense just about from start to finish. Not only did the Eagles offense destroy the No. 1 ranked defense in the NFL, but the defense held the Cinderella Story, Case Keenum, to only 5.3 yards per completion in this game. Home field advantage, defensive dominance, Nick Foles throwing for three touchdowns and putting his passes on a dime this week were the keys to the Eagles winning this game. With three turnovers, the Vikings hit a wall and could never rebound. Doug Peterson and Jim Schwartz called one of the best games of the season, which we get into on this post-game show. As always, we gave our analysis, takeaways and grades. It's now onto the Super Bowl to face the New England Patriots!

The NFC Divisional Playoffs at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia had all the markers that the underdog Eagles would be beaten by the Atlanta Falcons at home. The Vegas oddsmakers thought so, the sports analysts thought so. The trouble for all of them, and the Falcons, was the Eagles organization and fans didn’t think so. The Eagles go on to beat the Falcons 15-10 in what was a Defensive struggle throughout. The fans in the stadium were louder than I’ve ever heard them, they stepped up, and believed. Coach Doug Pederson worked up a game plan that worked. Nick Foles did what Nick Foles does, and didn’t try to be Carson Wentz. The Offensive Line was in control, protected Foles, and moved the Defense for the runners. The Eagles Defense, though, stepped up huge. The scheme met what the Falcons threw at them. They kept the defending NFC Champions to only ten points in a playoff game. Think about that. Now the Eagles are playing, at home, in the NFC Championship. This Sunday evening, the Eagles invite the Minnesota Vikings into The Linc. The Eagles will be underdogs again. We look into the difference between being average at a position and being elite at that same position. As Peyton Manning in vegas I’m mean on Sunday Night Football got his, but the Kansas City Chiefs defense didn't make it easy. The have a legit Super Bowl Defense and we get into what this does to the other teams clawing for that last spot. The hottest division race might be the NFC South. We shoot the breeze about the Saints having the Panthers hot on their tails in what looked to be a runaway for the Saints. Most interesting enough the Saints have two late game against Carolina Eazy believe the Panthers will be NFC Champions for some reason. These and a few more topics are discussed on this week podcast.
