Sam succumbs to a character moment as a Southern gentleman, before they cover some really family-friendly tunes from Cannibal Corpse. They take a very non-legalistic look at the Live Nation Anti-Trust lawsuit, and how it might impact the Aussie industry. Then Max dials in with Nick Allbrook from WA legend POND off the back of their latest single "So Lo". They talk about how the band are channeling a big night at the club, whether genre is back in a big way, and how the band plan out their albums. Then in Vinyl Club, they look back at some heat Sam copped online for not liking Deftones, they get a new song from a deep-cut friend of the show, and Max gives his impressions of Knocked Loose's latest album.Connect with POND on Instagram and Facebook, and listen to their latest single "So Lo" on Spotify and Apple Music. This week for City Scenes we have reached the letter P we're in Perth Australia. An unexpected goldmine of alternative, indie and psychedelic rock music. Perth or Boorloo as it is known in the indigenous Nyungar language is a city on the west coast of Australia and capital of the state of Western Australia. With a population of 2.1 million it is the fourth most populous city in Australia and is known for it's relaxed vibe, beach lifestyle and, as we'll see a very active music and arts scene. Interestingly its position on the west coast of australia makes it one of the most isolated large cities in the world with Adelaide being the nearest big city at over a 28 hour drive away. In this episode we hear a couple of great bands from Perth's past and then focus on the prolific ensemble of musicians and their side projects that revolves around the members of bands like Tame Impala and Pond who were responsible for a whole wave of psych rock revival in Australia in the 2010s. The Triffids formed in 1978 and received big success in the 1980s and are known as one of Australia's most loved Post-punk bands from that period. Perth has always maintained a reputation as a hotspot for alternative rock and in the 90s a new band on the scene called Jebediah, took Australia by storm when their debut hit Jerks of Attention gained massive radio play on the influential alternative radio station Triple J. A particularly fertile moment in the music history of Perth came about in 2008 with the appearance of a couple of new bands on the scene called Tame Impala and Pond. Both of these bands shared members with Tame Impala focused around the psychedelic songwriting of frontman Kevin Parker and Pond being more of a collaborative project between the musicians Nick Allbrook, Jay Watson and Joe Ryan all of whom at one point all played in Tame impala. These days Australia is known for its psych rock scene with bands like the lazy Eyes, King Gizzard and the lizard wizard and Jagwar Ma all finding worldwide success but it wouldnt be an understatement to say that all of this was catalyzed in some way with the emergence of Tame Impala in 2008. Since then Tame Impala have released 4 albums, found huge success all over the world and these days Tame Impala sell out stadiums and Kevin parker is a producer to the stars, collaborating with the likes of Mark Ronson and Diana Ross. Another band that have gaiend a huge following and who are intrinsically linked to Tame Impala is Pond who started making music at the same time and some of which's members have played in Tame Impala as Kevin Parker's backing band. Perth's music scene is particularly active and exciting but in the early 2010s, as Tame impala and Pond were beginning to gain recognition and tour internationally it must have been a particularly inspiring time to be making music in the city. Other bands to have emerged from this group of musicians include The Growl and Gum, the solo project of Jay Watson who is both the guitarist of Pond and has played both drums, and keyboard in Tame impala.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of guys who don't know each other well, but who've crossed paths a few times over the years—most recently at the Desert Daze festival, Nick Allbrook and Josh Conway. Allbrook is the frontman of the Australian psychedelic rock band Pond, which is sort of inextricably linked with another Australian band, Tame Impala. Allbrook was actually a member of Tame for years while also playing with Pond—which includes some current members of Tame Impala. But Pond, which has been around about as long, has built a sound of its own, much more hard charging than that other band, and released a whopping nine albums of frenetic, fun, fuzzy rock. If you've never heard the band, their album titles give a hint as to what they're all about, from Corridors of Blissterday to Man It Feels Like Space Again. Pond's latest album has a much simpler title, it's called 9, and among its fantastic tracks is this one, “Lights of Leeming.” Josh Conway is a huge fan of Pond, though his own band, The Marias, approaches music with a much gentler soul. Conway started the group with his significant other, the band's namesake Maria Zardoya. Their beginnings are kind of funny: They tried to write songs for film and TV placements, none of which—as you'll hear in this chat—were ever picked up. But, happy with what they'd written, Conway and Zardoya ended up releasing them anyway, and the Marias was born. Their alt-pop is miles from our other guest's on today's episode, with elements of jazz and even reggaeton sprinkled throughout a great debut album called Cinema. Check out “Hush” from that album right here. In this conversation, Allbrook and Conway talk about the work hours of Australians versus Catalonians, about how even a deliberate attempt to sell out can result in great creative work, and how taking a walk under the influence of molly and Outkast changed Conway's outlook. Also, they declare, cheekily, that God is dead, and art is too. Enjoy. Thanks for checking out the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Nick Allbrook and Josh Conway for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcast platform. This episode was produced by Keenan Kush, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by The Range.
The lead singer of Pond talks living with Kevin Parker from Tame Impala, going on spirit walks and why being a Freo supporter is a like a sad, but extremely good novel. Nick Allbrook is an enigma, and a lovely one at that. He's the frontman of one of Aussie music's most esteemed bands, Pond, who have just released a deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed album 'Nine'. Their new single is out now, a killah tune called 'Lights of Leeming'. Check them out at https://linktr.ee/Pondband See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Pond came out of the incredibly fertile Fremantle scene of the mid-2000s. It's the scene that gave birth to acts like Tame Impala – of which Nick Allbrook was also a member – and Mink Mussel Creek, as well as solo acts like Jay Watson's Gum and Shiny Joe Ryan. Thanks to the fact that Fremantle and the nearby city of Perth are some of the most isolated cities in the world, the whole scene was able to develop out of the reach of the music industry. Nick knew a thing or two about seclusion, having growing up in a small town called Derby, hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town of any size. We talk about his upbringing in this interview, his memories of coming up in the Fremantle scene, his decision to leave Tame Impala in 2013, and Pond's new album, '9'.
Nicholas Allbrook is an Australian musician, singer and songwriter, most known for his work as the frontman for psychedelic rock outfit POND and his work with Tame Impala. POND recently released their 9th studio album, aptly named '9', so we sat down with Nick to talk about the album, coming up in the Perth music scene, experimental recording techniques, the joy of collaborations, the business side of art, this being the first time he's off tour for an extended period, and a lot more! To celebrate the release of their 9th studio record, we've got Pond joining us for Episode 92! The WA psych-pop lads had planned to make their most divisive record yet when they hit the studio but instead returned with the brilliant and incredibly fun 9. In today's episode, we're talking with frontman Nick Allbrook about allowing themselves the freedom to get odd in the studio, what an expanded live setup would look like, the power of Betty Davis and how marathon running can help with the creative process. You can listen to Nick's playlist here. You can buy 9 here. You can listen to Pond here.Pond Instagram: @pondPond Facebook: @pondThanks again to Nick Allbrook and Pond for their time. "Pond" are a psychedelic rock band from Perth, Western Australia.Although the band official formed in 2008, their roots can be traced back to 2005, when singer Nick Albrook got together with a few friends under the name of "Electric Blue Acid Dogs". Feeling that the name was not appropriate when entering a local battle-of-the-bands competition, they renamed themselves to "Mink Mussel Creek". It was at this time they crossed paths with Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, who would later join them as their drummer and go on to produce a number of Pond's early studio albums. Since those early days the band have gone on to tour the world and drop 9 studio albums. Join Jay and Jesse as we dive into the history of "Pond" and spin a few favorite tracks, including some early rare jam/demo recordings which also feature Kevin Parker on drums. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

First up, host Lior Phillips chats with Nick Allbrook of Australian outfit POND. The psych rocker dishes about his time in Tame Impala, the importance of building a music scene on friendship and collaboration, and how he was influenced by David Byrne and Primal Scream. After that, we check in with Norwegian-born, Berlin-based indie pop artist Farao, who jokes about her type A personality and explains the raunchy dream about a jazz icon that inspired her project name. Marleah and James talk about the Pond (with The Muckers) show that they saw on 9/21/19 at Warsaw. Marleah likens the auditory experience of The Muckers to washing down a tab of acid with a bottle of Old Grandad. James gives props to our local Aussies, who do a damn good job of showing up for their people. Both Marleah and James seriously wonder if, in fact, Nick Allbrook is somehow the magical love child of Laurie Anderson, twice fertilized, once by Jagger and once by Bowie. Just...google these people. You'll see. Also, all concert venues should offer free water. BUDD: Starting up in Brisbane in 1991, Budd was formed out of a love for the Seattle sound and Fuzz guitar pedals. The foundation of Budd was created by Jeremy Finlayson on guitars; with Gary Linaker on Bass, Nico on guitars and John Morris on Drums. They released their debut album ‘Yakfat’ in 1993 and blew the minds of audiences with their ferocious volume, that left many ears ringing. The lineup changed before the release of their second album ‘Naf’ in 1994, with Jeremy being the only original member carrying the band name for the next two decades. In 2015, a reconciliation of the original lineup came together for the re-release of ‘Yakfat’ through Tym’s Records and rekindled the spark to play live shows again. The set you’re about to hear is a display of a band that found their sound again after being apart for 23 years. Recorded at Sonic Masala Festival in Brisbane on the 13th of August 2016. Recorded by Reuben Aptroot. Mixed by Branko Cosic. Nick Allbrook: Next up is Nick Allbrook, who some might know as a member of Tame Impala and Pond, and hails from Western Australia. Nick’s first foray into psych music started in 2007 with his first band, Mink Mussel Creek. A year later, he had joined Tame Impala as an auxiliary member, and also formed Pond, which has a revolving cast of members from both Tame Impala and Mink Mussel Creek. In 2014, Nick released his first solo record, titled ‘Ganough, Wallis & Fatuna’ through Spinning Top Records and followed it up with ‘Pure Gardiya’ in 2016. Recorded at the VOLUMES Festival in Sydney on the 27th of August 2016. Recorded and Mixed by Harvey O'Sullivan. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 13th of August 2017. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
Singer/songwriter and POND frontman Nick Allbrook takes me backstage before the band's recent LA show to reveal his long-term infatuation with Outkast's 2003 classic 'Love Below', the complex and endlessly inventive record helped teach Nick it was ok to love pop bangers. We talk about how the album is structured like a concept record, the wonderfully weird production choices, how Andre 3000 and Outkast evolved from their early Atlanta rap days into the genre blending of 'Love Below', the Outkast cover Nick did with Tame Impala on triple J, stories about foisting the record on the Tame boys in their old sharehouse, the pop anxiety some psych fans have about the evolution of Pond's sound and what to expect from the new Pond record. FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP32. Tame Impala. 11.07.12I’m back and I hope you’re all doing well. Thanks for sticking with me during my move and the podcast dry spell. The truth is I’ve hardly had any time to think about recording with the move. I have, however had several ideas floating around in my head. For instance I am thinking of changing the name of this podcast to Digital Spray Paint. And I am going to make the format a bit different, offering more variety, in the ways of interviews with bands, alongside phone conversations with my radio alumni, and comedian friends. With that said I am going to give you one more traditional FeedBack podcast the way it’s been since I started this little project. Also listen for a series I’m calling the 12 tracks of Christmas, that will IV drip songs throughout the month of December for your listening pleasure, as we get ready to start the new podcast format that will beguine soon after the new year. Thanks for listening now here’s the Podcast. A phone conversation with my friend recently had me thinking about how much great music comes out of Australia. With the obvious bands out of the way I posted a FaceBook comment and received several comments from you guys as well, listing a ton of iconic rock, that hails from the land down under. I’m not 100% certain of what it is they do differently there but I can say that Australia has yet to produce a rock band that disappoints me. Tame Impala is a band that popped up about two years ago with their debut record Innerspeaker, and shares an ambiance similar to America’s Interpol. The band was originally known as The Dee Dee Drums and is a c ollaboration of other indie groups fronted by Kevin Parker who also plays drums in Pond: A band that compares to other Australian notables like the Vines and Wolfmother. It’s also comprised of Tame Impala members Jay Watson and Nick Allbrook. Kevin’s drumming would show up again in his work with Mink Mussel Creek a group that was comprised of his friends in the Australian underground music scene as well as members of Tame Impala. The group started recording in 2008 but because of setbacks weren’t able to officially release their record, however in this technology age there is a way to find anything online, and the recordings were eventually released. Which is good for me because otherwise I wouldn’t have a song segue right here. There’s more to Parker than rhythm, he also shows intuition towards recording and effect pedal usage, with nearly 20 pedals in his arsenal while on stage. In an interview with UnderCover TV he elaborated on his take towards using pedals in a new way that helps create a sound that newer musicians are wishing they thought of. This past October Tame Impala released their latest full length titled Lonerism an album that embodies the atmospherical, environmentally, synth blanketed rock that fans have grown to crave. A mention of this new album by one of my FaceBook followers has me leaving you with two tracks from these guys.
