This week, we set the way back machine for 1996…with a stop off in 1999, which is the setting for the new book by Kyle Wiltshire and Jay Watson, The Dead Rock Stars. Coincidentally, then, we welcome co-author Kyle Wiltshire as our Third Lad! Kyle is a husband, father, and writer who has seen U2 eleven times. He tries to paint like Bob Ross and enjoys talking about the Star Wars universe on a very deep level. He loves pop culture and prides himself on being able to name the year any movie from the 1980s or '90s was released. P.S. We put him to the test with a brand new O3L game, “B-Movie…or Be Dead!” About The Dead Rock Stars: What if famous rock stars from the past, those who died young, in sudden and tragic ways, actually faked their deaths to become secret agents? Welcome to the world of The Dead Rock Stars, the heroes we never knew we had. The Dead Rock Stars is a tale about Cole Denton, a young tech genius who discovers the secret world of rock star secret agents. He is tasked with saving the world from an unknown threat—one that's closer to home than either Elvis Presley or the team can imagine. But can they beat the clock before it strikes midnight on December 31, 1999? In a twisting and nostalgic story, The Dead Rock Stars is an alternate history, placed squarely in the realm of real-world events, that happened without anyone knowing. Brimming with pop culture references for music lovers of every generation, the novel's fast and hilarious plot will keep readers guessing at every turn. Learn more about your ad choices. What if Curt Cobaine and Elvis never died but instead have been secretly saving the world this whole time? That's the premise of the new book by Jay Watson and Kyle Wiltshire called "Dead Rock Stars". When I heard about that I had to learn more. Over five albums of fronting GUM, not to mention the nine he's made as co-leader of psych cosmonauts Pond, Jay Watson's restless imagination has treated us to some of the most sonically diverse explorations of the past decade. On his new album Saturnia, however, these visions have coalesced into the richest, but also the most coherent work of Watson's career to date. Like the rest of the world I learned this past Tuesday, June 13th, that Cormac McCarthy had passed away at the age of 89. This episode had already been recorded, but I thought it would still serve as an initial and quick response to the need to offer a tribute: it's a compilation of the responses to the question What's your favorite McCarthy novel, and why? from the podcast's first 16 guests. The guests responding to the "favorite book and why" question this episode are: Steven Frye, Dianne Luce, Bill Hardwig, Nell Sullivan, Brian Giemza, Dennis McCarthy, Stacey Peebles, Paulo Faria, Jay Watson, Marty Priola, Bryan Vescio, Michael Crews, Peter Josyph, Richard Poe, Rick Wallach, Lydia Cooper, and myself. It is worth noting that at the time of the recording It is worth noting that at the time of the recording of each of these responses, The Passenger and Stella Maris had not yet been published. A more intentional tribute will be forthcoming soon. As posted on the society website: Cormac McCarthy 1933-2023It is with great sadness but also with deep gratitude that we mourn the loss of Cormac McCarthy. His contributions to literature, and to our lives, have been momentous. McCarthy was one of the most notable authors of his or indeed any generation. In his long, rich life, lived in places as various as Knoxville, Santa Fe, and Ibiza, his voracious curiosity led him equally to the most abstract ideas and the most downtrodden of barflies, all the cracks and corners of human thought and experience, our endless potential for both coming together and violently wrenching apart. He never compromised his devotion to the beauty of language and the necessary art of storytelling. He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, tapestries of character, history, philosophy, environment, and the moral questions that pull at all of us. This week for City Scenes we have reached the letter P we're in Perth Australia. An unexpected goldmine of alternative, indie and psychedelic rock music. Perth or Boorloo as it is known in the indigenous Nyungar language is a city on the west coast of Australia and capital of the state of Western Australia. With a population of 2.1 million it is the fourth most populous city in Australia and is known for it's relaxed vibe, beach lifestyle and, as we'll see a very active music and arts scene. Interestingly its position on the west coast of australia makes it one of the most isolated large cities in the world with Adelaide being the nearest big city at over a 28 hour drive away. In this episode we hear a couple of great bands from Perth's past and then focus on the prolific ensemble of musicians and their side projects that revolves around the members of bands like Tame Impala and Pond who were responsible for a whole wave of psych rock revival in Australia in the 2010s. The Triffids formed in 1978 and received big success in the 1980s and are known as one of Australia's most loved Post-punk bands from that period. Perth has always maintained a reputation as a hotspot for alternative rock and in the 90s a new band on the scene called Jebediah, took Australia by storm when their debut hit Jerks of Attention gained massive radio play on the influential alternative radio station Triple J. A particularly fertile moment in the music history of Perth came about in 2008 with the appearance of a couple of new bands on the scene called Tame Impala and Pond. Both of these bands shared members with Tame Impala focused around the psychedelic songwriting of frontman Kevin Parker and Pond being more of a collaborative project between the musicians Nick Allbrook, Jay Watson and Joe Ryan all of whom at one point all played in Tame impala. These days Australia is known for its psych rock scene with bands like the lazy Eyes, King Gizzard and the lizard wizard and Jagwar Ma all finding worldwide success but it wouldnt be an understatement to say that all of this was catalyzed in some way with the emergence of Tame Impala in 2008. Since then Tame Impala have released 4 albums, found huge success all over the world and these days Tame Impala sell out stadiums and Kevin parker is a producer to the stars, collaborating with the likes of Mark Ronson and Diana Ross. Another band that have gaiend a huge following and who are intrinsically linked to Tame Impala is Pond who started making music at the same time and some of which's members have played in Tame Impala as Kevin Parker's backing band. Perth's music scene is particularly active and exciting but in the early 2010s, as Tame impala and Pond were beginning to gain recognition and tour internationally it must have been a particularly inspiring time to be making music in the city. Other bands to have emerged from this group of musicians include The Growl and Gum, the solo project of Jay Watson who is both the guitarist of Pond and has played both drums, and keyboard in Tame impala.

Pond came out of the incredibly fertile Fremantle scene of the mid-2000s. It's the scene that gave birth to acts like Tame Impala – of which Nick Allbrook was also a member – and Mink Mussel Creek, as well as solo acts like Jay Watson's Gum and Shiny Joe Ryan. Thanks to the fact that Fremantle and the nearby city of Perth are some of the most isolated cities in the world, the whole scene was able to develop out of the reach of the music industry. Nick knew a thing or two about seclusion, having growing up in a small town called Derby, hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town of any size. We talk about his upbringing in this interview, his memories of coming up in the Fremantle scene, his decision to leave Tame Impala in 2013, and Pond's new album, '9'.
"Pond" are a psychedelic rock band from Perth, Western Australia.Although the band official formed in 2008, their roots can be traced back to 2005, when singer Nick Albrook got together with a few friends under the name of "Electric Blue Acid Dogs". Feeling that the name was not appropriate when entering a local battle-of-the-bands competition, they renamed themselves to "Mink Mussel Creek". It was at this time they crossed paths with Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, who would later join them as their drummer and go on to produce a number of Pond's early studio albums. Since those early days the band have gone on to tour the world and drop 9 studio albums. If you happen to be out of the loop on Pond, let us kick things off by letting you know they're legitimately in our short list of favorite bands of all time. These Perth, Australia psychedelic rockers are made up of Nick Allbrook, Jay Watson, Shiny Joe Ryan, James Ireland, and Jamie Terry. You know, building and improving our systems approach to soil health isn’t just a movement happening on the farm. There are more and more companies coming alongside growers to encourage the implementation of these practices, understanding the value of restoring our soils while addressing consumer concerns and desires. In today’s podcast, we’ve got a great opportunity to explore some of those ideas with Jay Watson, the Sourcing Engagement Manager for Global Sustainability and Grain Operations at General Mills. Jay leads efforts to advance progress on agricultural sustainability efforts. Jay says he’s been fortunate to travel to where many of GMI’s key ingredients are grown and appreciates the opportunity to connect with farmers and learn more about stewardship as well as family legacy. Mr. Jay Watson leads efforts to advance progress on agricultural sustainability efforts, including General Mills, Inc.’s (GMI) 2025 greenhouse gas reduction and 2030 regenerative agriculture commitments. In his role, Mr. Watson collaborates with buyers and external partners to develop and deploy engagements to both characterize & reduce social, environmental and economic impacts of key ingredients. Prior to joining the sustainability team in January 2017, Mr. Watson spent 10 years in a variety of buying roles within the company’s global sourcing organization. Mr. Watson holds B.S. in Finance and a B.S. in Economics from Arizona State University and a MBA from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management.
It's hard to remember it now, but back in 2010 Tame Impala were getting excited about the prospect of their first headline American tour. The Perth band had just released their debut album Innerspeaker. We all thought it was pretty good, and it would go on to win the J Award for Australian Album of the Year. This month, September 2020, we've been celebrating great Australian debuts on Double J Radio, so I thought it'd be fun to jump in the time machine, and dig into the Take 5 archives to share my conversation with Tame Impala the year they released their first album. Kev Parker and Jay Watson joined me to share their “songs that would surprise”, and it's such a joy to hear them at this moment, quite unaware of how big they would become. They've stayed true to that down to earth spirit, to this day. But I bet they never imagined they'd be headlining Coachella. One of the other things I love about this Take 5 is that it sounds like a blueprint. A debut album can be such a forecast for an incredible career to follow; it's a statement to the world on who you are, and where you're headed. This collection of songs does the same; we didn't know it yet, but Kev has a huge love of pop music… he would stray more and more towards that in the Tame albums that followed. And, perhaps most beautifully, he picks a song from a producer and musician who would go on to become on of his greatest collaborators and friends. Justin Timberlake - "Rock Your Body" The Presidents of The United States of America - "Peaches" S.O.A.P. - "This Is How We Party" Boris - "Heavy Friends" Mark Ronson and the Business Intl. - "Bang Bang Bang" (feat. Welcome to Beyond Technique, a podcast empowering photographers to bring their businesses to the next level! All images copyright Jay Watson Photography We discuss in detail: how Jay got started in photography the art of staying focused finding the right match in clients building relationships and keeping in touch intelligently the role PhotoShelter plays in the success of his business the role of professionalism self-correcting your professional path advice for those wanting to break into lifestyle and editorial photography Bonus! Here are 10 Tips of Jay's Tips for New Photographers 1. Start assisting. Make yourself available to other photographers. Start from the ground up as a volunteer assistant, 2nd assistant, and then to a 1st assistant as you get more experience. 2. Learn more about the photo business. Join EP, APA, or ASAP. Each site has terrific resources for business related info. Get the single best resource I have ever read: "Best Business Practices For Photographers" book by John Harrington. It’s a book. Study it! 3. Don't be afraid. Start shooting commercial jobs now and don't be afraid to ask for money. Yes you need experience, but you also can't afford to work for free. Learn about marketing, pricing, estimating, billing, and contracts Don’t take on an assignment that is over your head. Always be able to deliver. 4. Don't be so hard on yourself. Nobody ever said photography was easy, cheap, or fast. These are all misconceptions. It’s okay to make mistakes and to be frustrated. It takes years to gain experience. Embrace the hard work, and try to enjoy the process along the way. 5. Shoot great content that matches what your target audience needs. Hi ya! 6. Build the best website you can. Showcase your best work with 2-4 galleries (or genres of work) with roughly 12-30 images in each gallery. Don't build a gallery for every genre of photography. Show your focused strengths. Shoot a creative self portrait that is just as strong and creative as the work in your portfolio. Treat the bio portrait like an assignment portrait. Write a strong bio that avoids cliches in 2-3 short paragraphs. Mention your specialties, your experience, and a few personal facts about you. The site should be on your own domain name. For both new and working photographers looking to refresh their careers: 7. Work on improving your technical skills. Experiment with new tools. Commercial work demands that you can produce work with some level of predictability. The more you know, the more reliable you become. It also builds up your own confidence, and will open up new creative doors. If you are lacking in certain skills like lighting or retouching - practice and look for a good workshop to fill the void. 8. Start a new body of work. New theme. New genre. Give yourself a new outlet to explore without any expectations. 9. Make art or photography part of your daily lifestyle. This means being active every single day of your life. This could be time spent looking at images, reading new techniques, practicing new skills, testing new gear, writing down ideas, sending emails to potential clients, researching, sharing/posting images, working on your portfolio, or of course shooting something new. 10. Don't let yourself get in the way. You can always find a reason not to shoot. Excuses like "I need more time, more money, more equipment, better locations, or better subjects" will easily keep you from moving forward. Make due with what you have, rent gear, and find creative workarounds. It’s never going to get easier. You know what to do so just do it. Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and one of Western Australia's favorite sons Jay Watson (GUM, Pond, Tame Impala) joins me to talk about how the sonic world of Sly and the Family Stone's classic 'There's A Riot Going On' has inspired him through the years. We talk about why his uncool taste as a kid has become retroactively cool, liking music because of the context around it, glamorizing self-abuse in musicians, whether you’d be willing to sacrifice great art for the health of your musical heroes, the importance of making creative mistakes, people whose whole identities are defined by their musical taste, which band the fans at his gigs look like and why he thinks time is kind to almost all music. Way back in 2010, a little band from Perth had just released their debut album Innerspeaker. It would get attention worldwide, and win the J Award for Australian Album of the Year. Two months shy of that gong, Kevin Parker and Jay Watson came in to Take 5 with Zan and share five songs that we might be surprised to find in their record collection. Kev's love of pop music is well known today, but at the time these choices got quite the reaction when they came in to co-host, and giggle, with Zan. (Published on Oct 26, 2012) Cadwalader Park, Trenton. 100-acres of urban landscape came alive with dance and music through a creative collaboration called DanceScapes NJ, presented by Passage Theatre, a Trenton based company. Key partners were DanceSpora dance troupe, and the D&R Greenway Land Trust. (Oct. 6, 2012) "I spent a lot of time as a child in this park," says Jay Watson, VP of D&R Greenway. "This park really shaped me and turned me into an environmentalist." The centerpiece of the multi-arts event was a dance piece, Rapture For a Season, choreographed by Heidi Cruz-Austin. The work featured eight dancers accompanied by the young jazz quintet, ReBop, lead by 16-year-old trumpeter Alonzo Ryan. Passage Theatre producer Kacy O'Brien called the event an opportunity to "get to know Cadwalader Park in a different way."

FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP32. Tame Impala. 11.07.12I’m back and I hope you’re all doing well. Thanks for sticking with me during my move and the podcast dry spell. The truth is I’ve hardly had any time to think about recording with the move. I have, however had several ideas floating around in my head. For instance I am thinking of changing the name of this podcast to Digital Spray Paint. And I am going to make the format a bit different, offering more variety, in the ways of interviews with bands, alongside phone conversations with my radio alumni, and comedian friends. With that said I am going to give you one more traditional FeedBack podcast the way it’s been since I started this little project. Also listen for a series I’m calling the 12 tracks of Christmas, that will IV drip songs throughout the month of December for your listening pleasure, as we get ready to start the new podcast format that will beguine soon after the new year. Thanks for listening now here’s the Podcast. A phone conversation with my friend recently had me thinking about how much great music comes out of Australia. With the obvious bands out of the way I posted a FaceBook comment and received several comments from you guys as well, listing a ton of iconic rock, that hails from the land down under. I’m not 100% certain of what it is they do differently there but I can say that Australia has yet to produce a rock band that disappoints me. Tame Impala is a band that popped up about two years ago with their debut record Innerspeaker, and shares an ambiance similar to America’s Interpol. The band was originally known as The Dee Dee Drums and is a c ollaboration of other indie groups fronted by Kevin Parker who also plays drums in Pond: A band that compares to other Australian notables like the Vines and Wolfmother. It’s also comprised of Tame Impala members Jay Watson and Nick Allbrook. Kevin’s drumming would show up again in his work with Mink Mussel Creek a group that was comprised of his friends in the Australian underground music scene as well as members of Tame Impala. The group started recording in 2008 but because of setbacks weren’t able to officially release their record, however in this technology age there is a way to find anything online, and the recordings were eventually released. Which is good for me because otherwise I wouldn’t have a song segue right here. There’s more to Parker than rhythm, he also shows intuition towards recording and effect pedal usage, with nearly 20 pedals in his arsenal while on stage. In an interview with UnderCover TV he elaborated on his take towards using pedals in a new way that helps create a sound that newer musicians are wishing they thought of. This past October Tame Impala released their latest full length titled Lonerism an album that embodies the atmospherical, environmentally, synth blanketed rock that fans have grown to crave. A mention of this new album by one of my FaceBook followers has me leaving you with two tracks from these guys. Go by my site WesTexasMedia.com for a full track list of this episode, check out the video for Expectation, and listen to some more poddy deliciousness.Tracks Heard on this Podcast: It’s Not Ment to Be – Tame Impala Jeremy’s Storm – Tame Impala Fantastic Explosion in Time – Pond Doesn’t the Moon Look Good Tonight – Mink Mussel Creek Expectation – Tame Impala Mind Mischief – Tame Impala Music to Walk Home By – Tame Impala
