Gut health has become a major focus in nutrition, medicine, and consumer wellness, but the term is often used loosely. Claims about microbiome testing, probiotics, fermented foods, fibre, and "boosting" the gut microbiome are now common, yet the evidence behind these claims varies substantially. In this episode, Dr. Emily Leeming examines what gut health actually refers to, why it cannot be reduced to the microbiome alone, and where current microbiome science is being applied before it is ready. The discussion covers the limits of commercial stool testing, the difficulty of defining a healthy microbiome, and the practical strategies most strongly supported by current evidence. In this podcast we welcome back Dr Kate Leeming who embarked on a 5-month, 9000km bicycle expedition following the Syr Darya River from its source in Kyrgyzstan to the Aral Sea and from there along the Amu Darya to discover its true source into the Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan. This amazing feat was conducted by a small team where the use of a bike meant that Kate could make connections with people that are not easily done when in a car. Kate talks about her experiences out in the field, the impacts climate change is having on the region as well as how people are working to try and mitigate these challenges.

Wigan Warriors rugby league star and former Leeds Rhinos captain Kruise Leeming joins me for an honest, powerful conversation about leadership, loss, identity, and emotional growth. At just eight years old, Kruise lost his dad and was immediately told he was now “the man of the house.” That moment shaped everything: his drive, his discipline, and his approach to sport and leadership. Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham. Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
Your gut isn't just about what you eat. It's about how you live, love, feel, and breathe. In this episode of Live Well Be Well, I sit down with Emily Leeming, PhD, gut-brain researcher at King's College London and registered nutritionist whose work bridges the gap between cutting-edge microbiome science and practical wellness, to uncover the hidden forces shaping your microbiome. We go far beyond food and supplements to explore how hormones, intimacy, stress, and human connection are quietly reshaping your gut health every single day.Emily reveals why men and women have fundamentally different gut microbiomes, how a 10-second kiss transfers 80 million microbes between partners, and why stress, trauma, and even loneliness might impact your gut health more than any probiotic. This isn't about achieving perfect gut health. It's about understanding that your microbiome is alive, responsive, and deeply interconnected with how you feel, relate, and move through the world. In this conversation, we explore: • Why men and women experience gut health differently • How estrogen fluctuations and menopause alter women's gut diversity • Why testosterone and sperm quality are linked to gut health in men • The surprising ways sex and cohabitation change your microbiome • How stress, loneliness, and trauma can shrink your microbiome • The emerging connections between ADHD, autism, and gut-brain signaling • Why breathwork is one of the most underrated tools for gut health • The truth about commercial gut testing versus listening to your body • What stool reveals that gut tests don't • The role of polyphenols, fibre & fermented foods in microbial diversity • How gardening, touch, and community naturally diversify your microbesYou'll leave with a completely reframed understanding of gut health. One that honors the emotional, social, and hormonal dimensions of wellness alongside the nutritional ones.Love,Sarah Ann

What is your gut trying to tell you? It might not speak in words, but it's always sending signals through your energy levels, mood or even our skin. But most of us don't think about those little signs as part of a bigger picture. And a blatant way your gut communicates your general state of health, is through the state of your poo! Quickly flushed away, many of us don't take the time to examine our poop for signs of health, but if you're interested in gut health, keeping a track of your stools could be more informative than any wearable or microbe test you can buy!Today, we're diving into the world of what our poop says about our gut health with Dr. Emily Leeming, a scientist at King's College London, registered dietitian and the author of Genius Gut.You'll learn:What to look for in your poop and how to tell that your digestive system is working optimally.Whether the evidence for eating 30 Plants a week is actually that strongHow menopause can affect the gutHow long it would take to reset or ‘heal' the gut after years of excess sugar, poor eating or antibioticsWe also talk about the superpowers of fibre. How it creates “an obstacle course for sugar”, how it can stretch the gut and signal to your brain that you've eaten enough and even how it can lower your cholesterol.
Many chiropractors start their practice with a strong vision, only to find themselves facing unexpected hurdles that force them to pivot. But what if those challenges weren’t setbacks, but stepping stones to a deeper purpose? In this episode of The Marketing Your Practice Podcast, we sit down with Tim Leeming to explore his incredible journey—from building a thriving practice to navigating personal and professional obstacles that led him to redefine his mission. If you’ve ever questioned your direction or felt the pull toward a more meaningful path, this conversation is for you. Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode:
Twenty years ago, very few scientists even knew about something called the gut microbiome. Now, with over 70,000 research papers published on the subject, this complex ecosystem, home to trillions of microorganisms, is recognised as a key factor in our physical and mental wellbeing. Today's guest is Dr Emily Leeming, microbiome scientist and researcher at King's College London, registered dietitian, former chef, and author of Genius Gut: The Life-Changing Science of Eating for your Second Brain. In this conversation, Emily explains how our understanding of gut health has evolved dramatically over the past two decades, to the point where we now know it plays a crucial role in everything from our immune system, our ability to respond to stress, our skin and even our mental wellbeing. But, how can we assess the state of our own gut health? Emily shares how observing your own bowel movements can often tell you more about your gut health than costly microbiome tests and why some bloating after meals may actually be a sign of a healthy gut. We also discuss how our gut health has been negatively impacted by our modern lifestyles - stress, sleep quality, our modern diets as well as the timing of our meals. And, Emily shares why time-restricted eating and earlier dinner times can be really beneficial. Finally, Emily also gives some really practical advice about what we can eat to improve the state of our gut health, and explains why breakfast offers us a golden opportunity to support our gut health and why she is not a fan of recommending that everyone eat 30 different plant foods each week. Emily is someone who is highly knowledgeable and passionate about helping us all improve the health of our guts. Her message is clear: nurturing our gut microbiome is not about following rigid rules - it's about understanding this remarkable ecosystem and working with it, not against it. Over the years, Leeming worked as an assistant to Baldwin, who gave him permission to take care of his papers. He tells host Razia Iqbal that he was at the author's side during some of Baldwn's liveliest years.Leeming eventually became professor of English and comparative literature at the University of Connecticut. What a refreshing and enlightening interview this was!Dr Emily Leeming is a true gut expert (not one of the many people online who purport to be one) who has studied our microbiomes more than anyone I've ever encountered and is on a mission to help us feel better by looking after our "2nd brains" in a simple yet really effective way.During the episode we chat about the microbes that live on and in our body and how without them we would find it hard to survive. Emily myth busts in a big way, explaining why probiotics are not generally the answer and why rather than populating our guts with supplements, we need to look after and diversify them with diet, social interaction and other simple but truly effective tricks for health.I ask Emily so many questions (I couldn't get them out quickly enough) and just know that this episode is going to help so many people.I also have to point you to her AMAZING book Genius Gut which I devoured in a day. Please listen to this episode if you have time. It will help you without overwhelming or encouraging restrictive or comlex diets. Emily is indeed a genius!

Angela welcomes Dr. Emily Leeming, a research fellow at King's College London, to discuss the fascinating connection between the gut microbiome and brain health. Dr. Leeming shares insights on the impact of stress on the microbiome, the importance of fibre and diverse foods for gut health, and the role of omega-3 in mental well-being. They also look at topics such as the production of short-chain fatty acids by gut bacteria, the influence of diet on mental health conditions like depression and ADHD, and the potential benefits of post-biotics. KEY TAKEAWAYS Eating foods rich in fibre and polyphenols, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can support the gut microbiome and brain health. Consuming omega-3 fatty acids from sources like oily fish can help prevent cognitive decline and support mental health. Chronic stress can negatively affect the gut microbiome, leading to inflammation and other health issues. The impact of artificial sweeteners on the gut microbiome is still being researched, with varying results depending on the type and dose. The gut microbiome can produce a wide range of metabolites, emphasising the importance of consuming a diverse range of foods to support gut health. BEST MOMENTS "So the microbiome really means all the microbes that we're covered in. So we're covered in microbes inside and out." “That was one of the key things that I took away from the book when I was reading it." "I think with the research where we know it at the moment in terms of the menopause, with taking soy foods and phytoestrogens is that it's very much on an individual basis." In this current climate, should you be looking for ways to save money on farm? Or should you be looking at upping your production to cover rising costs? This week on the Head Shepherd podcast, we hope to answer those questions for you. Our guest this week, Tim Leeming, is well known for his precision lambing and we've had him as a guest on the podcast before (go check that one out here). In this episode, Tim discusses his strategies for farming success. “When it comes to your production system - when it comes to understanding what drives that in your business - whether you've got paddocks that need to be subdivided, whether you've got soil fertility that needs improving, pasture composition that needs improving … If you're a good farm manager and have a reasonable base knowledge of how the job rolls … it's not rocket science.”Tim and Ferg discuss the mindset behind cutting costs vs upping production. While the current advice may be to not join ewe lambs or containment feed, Tim believes in identifying where profit margins exist for a job done well. “If you do a bad job, of course, the economics of those two things might be pretty ordinary, but if you do it well, the margins are there. They're proven margins. We've seen it,” says Tim.Tim emphasises the need for clear targets and disciplined execution. “We've got evidence of it, that if you manage your nutrition right in ewe lambs and hit these targets and do all the right things, guess what, you'll get a bloody good result, and those sheep will pay you dividends for the rest of their life on your farm because you've done that well.”Discipline is a big theme throughout this week's podcast, with Tim collecting data when the opportunity presents itself (for example, ewe body condition when ewes are in the yards). “If you think about a mob of ewes, for instance, and how many times that they might visit the stockyards over the year. There are probably at least eight times in a year that those animals will be in a yard facility and generally, they will be going up a drafting race or drenching race or through a sheep handler,” he explains. For Tim, consistently doing the small things well sets a foundation for long-term success. “It's a two, four, five-minute job to get a line in the sand on where that condition score of that mob is at that particular time. I'm like a dog with a bone. I'm very, very persistent on making sure that we record that, every time we're bringing those livestock in the yards,” says Tim. “It's so important in your decision-making and your management. So, you know, that is a discipline thing.” Tim has a huge passion for farming and there are some great takeaways from this podcasHead Shepherd is brought to you by neXtgen Agri International Limited, we help livestock farmers get the most out of the genetics they farm with. Originally aired August 9th, 2021Imagine the endless desolation and sand dunes of the Sahara Desert abruptly falling into the ocean. That's Namibia's Skeleton Coast. It's a brutally punishing environment with the only water being cruelly limitless and ironically undrinkable as it's filled with salt. The other challenges include dodging the African lions that walk up and down the shore, hoping to snag a meal via a seal lion, the only place on earth that lions actually hunt by entering the ocean. On this episode of the podcast, I had the pleasure of talking with the founder and CEO of The Visible App, Harry Leeming. If you haven't downloaded the app the link is below, after listening to the podcast I am sure you will want to have this useful tool. Harry explains the app, how it monitors the HRV (heart rate variability) and HR (heart rate) along with self reported information. The app can then provide information and a pattern which can support you to understand when the body is at baseline, under stress or at risk of being under stress, which is a great tool for identifying potential crashes/relapse. Allowing the user to adapt, pace and try to avoid crashes/relapse. Harry explains the app is constantly being improved and added to and gives an insight into the future of Visible. Which is exciting, you will definitely want to hear the future plans. Harry also shares his own journey with long covid and how this led to the development of the App. I hope you enjoy this episode and as always take care. See you on the next podcast. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of guys who don't know each other well, but who've crossed paths a few times over the years—most recently at the Desert Daze festival, Nick Allbrook and Josh Conway. Allbrook is the frontman of the Australian psychedelic rock band Pond, which is sort of inextricably linked with another Australian band, Tame Impala. Allbrook was actually a member of Tame for years while also playing with Pond—which includes some current members of Tame Impala. But Pond, which has been around about as long, has built a sound of its own, much more hard charging than that other band, and released a whopping nine albums of frenetic, fun, fuzzy rock. If you've never heard the band, their album titles give a hint as to what they're all about, from Corridors of Blissterday to Man It Feels Like Space Again. Pond's latest album has a much simpler title, it's called 9, and among its fantastic tracks is this one, “Lights of Leeming.” Josh Conway is a huge fan of Pond, though his own band, The Marias, approaches music with a much gentler soul. Conway started the group with his significant other, the band's namesake Maria Zardoya. Their beginnings are kind of funny: They tried to write songs for film and TV placements, none of which—as you'll hear in this chat—were ever picked up. But, happy with what they'd written, Conway and Zardoya ended up releasing them anyway, and the Marias was born. Their alt-pop is miles from our other guest's on today's episode, with elements of jazz and even reggaeton sprinkled throughout a great debut album called Cinema. Check out “Hush” from that album right here. In this conversation, Allbrook and Conway talk about the work hours of Australians versus Catalonians, about how even a deliberate attempt to sell out can result in great creative work, and how taking a walk under the influence of molly and Outkast changed Conway's outlook. Also, they declare, cheekily, that God is dead, and art is too. Enjoy. Thanks for checking out the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Nick Allbrook and Josh Conway for chatting. In 2019 she became the first person to cycle 1600km through the sands of the Namibian coast and is working toward the first-ever Antarctic bicycle crossing via the South Pole for her educational outreach organization, Breaking the Cycle. In May of this year Leeming completed her latest expedition, The Andes, the Altiplano & the Atacama. The 4,400km adventure began just as Covid-19 hit, forcing her to end her trip after 1,100km of riding. She returned earlier this year to successfully complete the trip. In this episode, we ask: What is your first memory of going on an adventure? Were you a good student in school? Did you enjoy learning? Have you always considered yourself an explorer? How does Breaking the Cycle: Education connect with your expeditions? What is the goal? What got you interested in the traversing the Skeleton Coast in Namibia by bike? Tell us about the all-wheel-drive fat bike you used. Was this a custom set up, or something you were able to find off the shelf? How did the bike perform? Were there any surprises along the way? How do you prepare for such massive expeditions, especially ones that no one else has completed before? How much of the preparation involves physical training versus research and logistics? How do you prepare yourself mentally? What are the challenges that women continue to face in the world of adventuring and exploring today? Are there ways we can be “explorers” in our day-to-day lives? What is the value of staying curious?
