Night Flying Qualification: VFR geht auch nach Sonnenuntergang...Es gibt verschiedene Wege, an einen Flugschein zu kommen: Drachenflug, Trike, Ultralight oder eben die "Echo-Klasse" - aber alle eint in der "Standardausführung" ein kleines Manko: mit Einbruch der Dunkelheit (plus-minus) ist eben Schluss. Das lässt sich, für alle, die "höher" hinaus wollen, durch IFR und ATPL lösen - aber "for the rest of us" sind die Wintermonate die entscheidende Jahreszeit: nun heißt es, die frühe Dunkelheit kostengünstig für die Nachtflugausbildung zu nutzen - wenn ein Flugplatz mit Befeuerung und entsprechenden Öffnungszeiten in der Nähe ist! https://youtu.be/s5xiyMh30Qc Die reguläre Sichtflug-Ausbildung (VFR-Flug, visual flight rules) hat zwei gravierende Einschränkungen: schlechtes Wetter und Dunkelheit. Wetter ist in der (Hobby-)Fliegerei immer ein großes Hindernis und auch mit "Upgrades" nicht immer ganz zu umgehen bzw. schlichtweg nicht zu bezahlen. Zumindest aber für Letzteres lässt sich durch eine Zusatzqualifikation schnell und einfach ein "Upgrade" der bestehenden Privatpilotenlizenz (PPL) herbeiführen - und ein einmaliges Flugerlebnis genießen! https://youtu.be/1OW6hq4KC6U Aber nun schön der Reihe nach: Die PPL, die Privatpilotenlizenz, wird in unserer Region normalerweise für Maschinen bis zu einem Abfluggewicht von 2 Tonnen, einem Propeller vorne mittig und Reifen unten, zwischen Bahn und Flugzeugrumpf, erstellt. Mit dieser darf, auch wenn die neuen EU-Regelungen namens SERA (Standardized European Rules of the Air), die das Verkehrsministerium (BMVI) in Deutschland nach wie vor eisern mit der überflüssigen Luftverkehrs-Ordnung (LuftVO) eigens und in Teilen abweichend regeln will, in einem Zeitfenster von - in unserer Gegend - ca. 35-40 Minuten vor Sonnenaufgang und bis maximal ca. 40 Minuten nach Sonnenuntergang legal geflogen werden. Natürlich, wie der Name schon vermuten lässt, hat die klassische Sichtflugausbildung das Manko, dass ich nur fliegen darf, wenn ich sehen kann, wohin. Nebel, dichter Schnee und heftiger Regen sowie Wolkendurchflüge, um schnell und oberflächlich nur einige zu nennen, schließen ein Fliegen in der jeweiligen Region bzw. durch die genannten "optischen Hindernisse", aus. Und, klar, die Nacht fällt ebenfalls unter ausgeschlossene Zeiten. Wobei... nicht ganz, dann hier lässt sich mit einer Zusatzausbildung einiges ändern, mit wenig Aufwand, im Vergleich zu der nächsthöheren Stufe, dem Instrumentenflug (IFR - wobei für IFR-Ausbildung die NFQ eine Voraussetzung ist!). Wer schon immer mit dem Gedanken an eine NFQ, Night Flying Qualification, schwanger gegangen ist, hat das beste Zeitfenster für günstiges Fliegen bereits verpasst: nach Beginn der Winterzeit, rund um November/Dezember, wenn es ab gefühlt 16 Uhr Ortszeit bereits dunkel wird, ist die Zeit, wo an den entsprechend ausgestatteten Flughäfen plötzlich die Landelichter angehen. Sind die Gebühren für Nutzung und auch Landung noch im Normaltarif, rentiert sich das Rundendrehen am meisten. https://youtu.be/PhzUp6Odtrg Nun aber der Reihe nach: Die VFR-Nachtflugberechtigung bzw. NFQ erhält, wer innerhalb der Nachtstunden mindestens fünf Flugstunden mit Fluglehrer nachweisen kann. Im Rahmen dieser Flugstunden ist ein Streckenflug von mindestens 50 Kilometer zu einem weiteren Flughafen erforderlich, als auch fünf "full stop landings", die ohne Fluglehrer an Board realisiert werden müssen. Full stop bedeutet, dass nicht, wie bei üblichen Platzrunden, angeflogen, aufgesetzt und sofort wieder gestartet wird, sondern das Flugzeug landet, stoppt und dann zum Abflugpunkt auf der Piste zurückrollt und erneut startet. Hört sich alles trivial an, wer aber seine Homebase an einem Flugplatz ohne Nachtbetrieb und entsprechender Befeuerung der Bahn und Vorfeldflächen hat, kennt die Probleme: der Flieger muss tagsüber zu einem entsprechenden Platz überführt werden, wenn sich kein zweiter Mitstreiter findet, muss ein Taxi gebucht werden. Dann muss man abends wieder dorthin, fliegen, nach Hause - und den Flieger am nächsten Tag in der Früh wieder zur HomeBase bringen, damit alle bestehenden Buchungen von Fliegerkameradinnen und -kameraden durchgeführt werden können. Teuer und zeitlastig. Aber...! Nur weil Du an einem Flugplatz bist, der dies alles bietet, muss der wiederum, meist preislich, nicht die beste Wahl sein! Ich habe meinen ersten Anlauf zur NFQ, den ich damals in Hessen nicht fertigstellen konnte, an meinem Heimatplatz Egelsbach (EDFE) gemacht. Streckenflug nach Karlsruhe Baden-Baden, Platzrunden in Egelsbach. Allerdings musste man hierzu die damalige AIP VFR genau studieren: EDFE hatte nach, wenn ich mich recht entsinne, 19-21 Uhr lokal PPR im Winter, die man sich teuer mit etlichen Euros erkaufen musste. Es galt damals abzuwägen: raus fliegen, in der Region auf die Finsternis warten, Platzrunden drehen und im Idealfall gleich die finalen fünf Landungen fliegen (Anmerkung: eher illusorisch, bei Nacht sieht die ganze Welt ganz anders aus und Landungen eben auch!) und wieder ab nach Hause, bevor das PPR-Fenster verfällt und es wirklich unsagbar teuer wird... mit möglichen Plätzen im Umkreis war es schnell ausgerechnet: Platzrunden in Egelsbach und aus. Beim ersten Flug haben wir nach ersten Platzrunden gleich mal den Streckenflug nach EDSB (Karlsruhe BB,) geflogen. Damals, es war 2013, musste noch auf den Radar-Frequenzen zwischen Air France und Lufthansa im Ländereck gefunkt werden und kurzfristig mit Reims, eher unverständlich, der Abflugflughafen - trotz aufgegebenen Flugplan - geklärt werden. Vergesst die Details, es war eine unvergessene Zeit... aber, kurz gesagt: ich bin mit den Ladungen nicht fertig geworden, daher die Fertigstellung aufgeschoben... und das so lange, bis SERA dem Ganzen nun eine "Fertigstellungsfrist" von sechs Monaten ins Gesetz geschrieben hat... 2013 - 2021... das muss man nicht rechnen, um festzustellen, dass sechs Monate hier nicht zum Tragen kommen. Dafür war es dieses Jahr im Februar mit drei Terminen "schnell" erledigt: während Eis und Schnee schon wieder tobten und wir drei von drei Maschinen fast wegen zugeeisten Reifenschuhen fast absagen mussten, klappt letzter Ersatzflieger mit hohem Heizungsaufwand und durch viele Fliegerkameradinnen und -kameraden - und so flogen wir abends nach Leipzig, zwei nette Anflüge (siehe auch die Videos hier im Blog) und ab nach Hause. Damit war ein wichtiger Punkt erledigt: der Streckenflug. Für die Platzrunden bietet sich in Berlins Süden Oehna an. So viele dicke begeisterte Daumen kann ich gar nicht heben, wie der Service die beiden Abende war. Noch dazu: ich war an beiden Abenden der einzige! Und trotzdem: ich konnte in Ruhe meine Platzrunden üben (erster Abend) und ein paar Tage später meine fünf full-stop-landings hinter mich bringen. Nachtflugausbildung: aus der Cirrus über Leipzig, MDR-Tower deutlich sichtbar / Bild-Quelle: privatAuch neu war die Regelung, dass nicht der Fluglehrer nach Rückkehr und Abschluss sowie Dokumentation der erfüllten Anforderungen handschriftlich in die Lizenz die Berechtigung einträgt, sondern, dass diese an die Landesluftfahrtbehörde geschickt wird und gegen Kostennote eine neue Lizenz mit der Post kommt... wenn einem das LUBB nicht im ersten Anlauf die falsche Lizenz zuschickt... wer weiß, wer meine so fälschlicherweise in der Post hatte... Kurzum: VFR-N ist eine anspruchsvolle aber machbare und sinnvolle Ergänzung zur PPL! Flugplan bei Nacht ist, alleine schon aus Sicherheitsaspekten, obligatorisch. Auch übt man das Ausfüllen einfach viel zu selten. Funken geht nun auch ohne AZF, reine BFZ-Sprechgruppen reichen. In der Theorie käme man auch mit deutsch durch, aber lasst euch auf das Experiment, mal wieder die englischen BZF-Sprechgruppen auszupacken, gerne ein. Ich hatte das Problem, dass ich nach Abflug und Wechsel auf Arrival den Lotsen so gut wie gar nicht verstanden hatte... somit habe ich in einer der wichtigsten Phasen den Luftdruck nicht verstanden und auch das Zurücklesen mehrfach durch Wiederholung des Lotsen "erraten", aber immer noch nicht "verstanden", geschweige denn schriftlich auf dem Kniebrett fixiert! Nur gut, dass das Wetter stabil war und der Kollege aus München im Anschluss ein wenig stimmstärker war - und ich trotzdem wieder nur Bullshit zurück gelesen habe... lag wohl eindeutig an mir und nicht an der Lautstärke. Aber sonst war es super - mal sehen, wie der Vorsatz, mehr englisch zu funken, sich über das Jahr nun so bewährt... Sonst hat sich wenig geändert. Der Streckenflug ist eine tolle Erfahrung, in "totaler" Finsternis und mit fast absoluter Ruhe eine Nachtstreckenflugerfahrung zu gewinnen. Es ist ein majestätischer Moment - und mancher könnte es als "das wahre Fliegen" bezeichnen - zurecht! Landen ist ein spannendes Thema. Trotz sämtlicher Kippschalter auf "on" und voller "Christbaumbeleuchtung", die klassische Referenz aus den Augenwinkeln fehlt... aber: dafür übt man es ja. Nicht entmutigen lassen, weiter machen. Eine kleine Hilfe ist, einen zweiten Höhenmesser auf Flugplatzhöhe zu stellen statt QNH, um somit neben dem Blick nach vorne immer mal wieder die "wahre" Höhe über Boden abgleichen zu können. Für den "Solo-Prüfungsflug" der Landungen empfehle ich euch: erste Runde mit Fluglehrer. Alles aussprechen, jede Bewegung, jeden Hebel, jedes Flap-Setting, jede Ruderbewegung, jede Windkorrektur. Stress könnt ihr in dieser dunklen Situation nicht brauchen. Und Licht? Einfach durchgehend brennen lassen, es ist und bleibt dunkel draussen! Und dann, wie beim ersten Mal: Fluglehrer aussteigen lassen und los! Es ist schneller vorbei, als gedacht, dann geht es nach Hause, Schulterklopfen - und das fliegerische Paperwork... Ich freue mich, da wir dank unserer Regierung, die wirklich alles verschlafen und maximal möglich ignoriert hat, auf den kommenden Herbst (ja, ja, ich weiß... ich freue mich auch endlich auf Sommer, Sonne und Hitze!), wenn die Nächte wieder spät nachmittags beginnen. Dann mache ich mich gleich mal wieder auf nach Leipzig... und dann mal sehen...! Kleines Wort zur Mahnung: Die einmal erworbene NFQ verfällt nicht, will aber regelmäßig durch Training wieder aufgefrischt werden. Nachtflieger geben mir hier recht, wer es noch nicht gemacht hat, glaube mir: die Nächte sind verdammt dunkel, selbst über einer Großstadt oder in direkter Nähe eines internationalen Airports! Also: Wenn es soweit ist, ruhig mal auf drei, vier Runden mit Fluglehrer los gehen - der Sicherheitsgewinn und das stetige Auffrischen ist mehr wert, als die Euro, die das Training kostet! Und ja: nachts fliegen ist ruhiges fliegen, ist majestetisches fliegen. Also, lasst es drauf ankommen! Und ja, mit der Berechtigung dürfen auch Passagiere mitgenommen werden - wenn denn die erforderliche Anzahl an Landung(en) IN DER NACHT in den letzten 90 Tagen "proficient" gehalten wurde! On November 3rd, Daylight Savings Time will be ending, and with it brings early nightfall.  For those of us who work a regular 9-5 schedule, early nightfall means an increase in night flying time.  How current are your night skills? Maybe it’s time to focus on what is different between day VFR and night VFR flight. Obviously, less ambient light adds challenges for anything requiring eyesight.  This includes preflight inspection, taxi safety, obstruction avoidance, IMC recognition and avoidance, cockpit resource management, and a number of other things.  Most familiar to pilots is probably the differences in landing. The sight picture of a normal approach to a runway is very different with reduced external visual cues from night.  Flashing lights can help or hurt pilot attention and recognition. So should night flight be avoided?  Not necessarily. Night flight brings with it reduced ATC workloads, often calmer winds, cooler temperatures that help performance, and the ability to spot traffic from farther off.  Your decision about flying at night can be aided by attending a Night Flying Refresher seminar like this one.

Night flying is generally smoother and features less communications traffic congestion than daytime flying. But to have a safe night flight, the pilot needs to be extra vigilant in several areas. For starters, it is much more difficult to find a suitable area for an emergency landing at night, so you might want to adjust your route of flight to remain within a reasonable distance of suitable emergency airports. That might necessitate flying slightly higher at night to maximize gliding distance. Flying higher, however, has its own downside at night, since vision is directly affected by oxygen level. Consider using supplemental oxygen if flying above 5,000 feet. Prepare your eyes for night vision by wearing sunglasses for at least 30 minutes before dusk. Rhodopsin - visual purple - enhances the sensitivity of the rods in your eyes. Once your eyes are dark-adapted, they can discern the light of a candle at 2 miles. Even a brief flash of light will bleach out the rhodopsin and destroy the enhanced night vision. Rhodopsin is insensitive to red light. Have at least two flashlights available, and keep instrument lights as dim as possible. Currency requirements to carry passengers: 3 full stop landings within an hour of sunset or sunrise during the preceding 90 days.

Night FlyingThis was my first introduction to a number of things. Night flying, a Cessna 172, right hand traffic pattern at an unfamiliar airport, and takeoff from a towered airport. The video quality is extremely dark, so in an attempt to make things somewhat better I increased the resolution of the video to 640x480 so you might make out some objects so this is the reason for the larger download. It is still pretty dark, though. There is some good audio for those interested in what is different with night flying.-GregDownload the video
