Nationwide protests. Racist discrimination. Militarized police. These were the characteristics used to describe America during the long hot summer of 1967, when riots swept through more than 150 cities. They still describe America today, as the government has responded to protests against racist policing and immigration raids with militarized police forces backed by the Marines and the National Guard. It all sounds eerily similar to the America of more than half a century ago, when a presidential commission diagnosed the country's problem: racism, particularly in policing, was causing widespread political unrest. “When a protest becomes that broad-based — cutting across gender lines and ethnic lines — then I think you have the opportunity to realize this is a true political movement,” says Rick Loessberg, an urban historian and the former planning commissioner for Dallas County, Texas, and the author of “Two Societies: The Rioting of 1967 and the Writing of the Kerner Report.”“This is not just a group or a segment of the population letting off steam,” says Loessberg, “which was what was one of the explanations that was used in the 1960s. Rugby is a sport where people spend over an hour pretending they're not hurt. That's in contrast to soccer, where people spend over an hour pretending they are.

According to a new White House National Security Memorandum, AI is strategic to our national defense, and by extension is also a threat to our well being.  With this memorandum, the federal government is declaring far more reaching authority with AI's use, development and testing.  This also means the government will be able to intercede in the technology industry when national interests can be potentially threatened.  It was only a year earlier that the Department of Defense published its new strategy to ensure that economic strength is included in its overall military supply chain strategies called the National Defense Strategic Initiative.  In that document the DoD introduced a concept called economic deterrence, where a strong economy is integral to the US military's ability to respond to threats from foreign actors.  Economic resilience is a key factor.Many of the concepts first introduced with the NDSI in 2023 are echoed in the White House memorandum issued at the end of October 2024.  On many occasions we have discussed that when the US government declares that there are to be standards to be met before AI can be used in production systems, it will mean a consolidation in the tech industry as the smaller development will not have the resources to conform with the same standards that well funded foundations like OpenAI can meet.  But will the concept of the “economic resilience” found in the NDSI now be applicable to tech industry that produces AI products, and will that mean precious minerals such as cobalt and lithium become vital for procurement to the detriment of agriculture?We have been manipulated.
