In this episode of Transform Your Workplace, host Brandon Laws sits down with Nikki Innocent, a leadership coach and DEI consultant, to explore the human side of workplace culture. Nikki shares a pivotal moment from her corporate career that ultimately led her to question workplace norms and advocate for more transparent, human-centered leadership. From addressing workplace toxicity to embracing multigenerational collaboration, Nikki challenges leaders to rethink how they create spaces where employees feel seen, valued, and heard. Listen in and discover how to break outdated workplace molds and foster a culture where authenticity and collaboration thrive. TAKEAWAYS When employees leave without acknowledgment, it creates confusion, mistrust, and a lack of psychological safety in the workplace. Toxic workplaces are often the result of outdated systems, not just individual bad leaders. Viewing workplace dynamics as heroes vs. villains oversimplifies human behavior and limits opportunities for growth and collaboration. Encouraging open conversations about challenges and discomfort leads to stronger teams and a healthier work environment. Modern leadership is shifting toward transparency, inclusion, and belonging—values that professionals across all generations seek. Acknowledging difficulties and emotions at work isn't a weakness; it's a sign of strength that fosters problem-solving and resilience. Since learning happens in every aspect of life, not just through formal education, workplaces should embrace continuous growth and adaptation. Multigenerational workplaces thrive when collaboration is prioritized over competition, creating space for diverse perspectives and innovation. A QUICK GLIMPSE INTO OUR PODCAST

What does learning mean to you? Do you have a practice for unlearning too? Today's episode is a special one because we're sharing a conversation that Nikki had with OwnTrail founder Kt McBratney about the value or the purpose of having a practice of continual learning and unlearning to navigate an ever-changing world with authenticity. Originally a video livestream, this conversation dives into giving yourself permission to evolve, be wrong and ask questions; to understanding how different people are impacted by the traditional approach to “learning” in our society and offers guidance on how to align with the most resonate ways to learn and unlearn while also stretching you outside of your comfort zone. What's something you learned or unlearned lately that has changed your perspective around you? For show notes and more info, visit nikkiinnocent.com/podcast

We talk about the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels and how imposter syndrome is not a problem for individuals to fix within themselves, but rather a systemic issue to be approached from a grander scale. Host, Nikki Innocent, focuses this episode around a topic that comes up in almost all of her coaching calls along with any live Q&A session at her speaking engagements: How to hack Imposter Syndrome and overcome the fear of being found out. Imposter syndrome is defined as that sinking feeling that you will be found out as a fraud, that you are not qualified, that you don't belong, that your successes are undeserved and based more on luck, timing or other factors outside your control rather than your skills, contribution and strong performance. When Imposter Syndrome was first talked about in the 1970s, it was believed that it only affected women. From then to now, fifty years later, we realize that it is not just a women’s issue. We now know that so much of this Imposter Syndrome comes from you being seen as part of the non-dominate, non-majority or subordinate group. If you are seen as a member of that non-majority identity dynamic, you have been told by society that you are not enough, that you are a fraud. So much of this feels like it is our own heaviness that we are carrying around, but the reality is that you have been told as a member of that subordinate group that you are not enough. Nikki urges listeners to shine a light on this topic, to identify it, and to talk about it. The tangible solutions discussed in this episode tie to three common themes that Nikki discusses in her women’s leadership work: 1) people pleasing 2) seeking external validation or approval 3) lacking awareness of our unique strengths Listen to the full podcast episode for specific exercises to shine a light on these three themes, tap into specific tools to hack the powerful feelings of fraudulence and put them in action to overcome imposter syndrome. Host, Nikki Innocent, centers the importance and power of taking time for a purposeful pause right now. As we start September and enter into "back to school" territory, the need for a thoughtful period of reflection and self-awareness is key. In the midst of COVID19 and our national reckoning on racial injustice, so many of us find ourselves in an autopilot, survival mode. We're striving to keep our heads above water and as a result the cyclical restart that comes with the launch of a new school year & post Labor Day work rush feels markedly different, as it should. Nikki urges listeners to take a beat, to acknowledge the unorthodox situation many of us find ourselves in and to get close to where they are feeling constricted or tight in their lives, feeling stuck, blocked or numb and where they are feeling expansive and momentum. This purposeful pause and awareness is important to regain more agency in the midst of uncertainty, avoid burnout and move forward with sustainable energy & intentional action during this period of significant individual and collective transformation. Nikki folds in learnings from the classic TV show Family Matters and from her favorite album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, needless to say folks who grew up in the 90s will feel the love! As a Culture Columnist for The Boston Globe, Jeneé Osterheldt often writes at the intersections of identity and social justice through the lens of the arts and culture. Jeneé joins host Nikki Innocent for a conversation featuring their discussion about being biracial, the experience of living in the in-between of identity buckets and how that influenced them both as children and as adults. The episode also touches on Jeneé’s experiences as a public figure speaking out against injustice from Kansas City to Boston and her experience thus far wrestling Boston’s liberal and racist stereotypes holding the same space. Naturally with Jeneé’s expertise, the episode also touches on so many moments happening in pop-culture and cutting edge news through a lens of diversity & inclusion, from Cardi B's WAP to Viola Davis's powerhouse career to The Baby-Sitters Club on Netflix. During the episode, you'll hear as Jeneé's editor breaks the news that Kamala Harris was named the VP candidate for the Democratic party. Jeneé and Nikki reflect real time about the impact of the first Black & South Asian being named as a major party VP candidate, the importance of representation and the racial and gendered complexities of America navigating a leader with a mixed race identity who is a woman -- shining a light on the intersection patriarchy and supremacy. When Jeneé’s not writing or making smoothies, she spends her time dancing, binge-watching, or being bossed around by a boxer named Peppermint Patty. This episode is for anyone who is interested in learning more about the real life experiences of racial discrimination and how to discuss the dynamics at play, who is raising mixed race children, who is looking for ways to activate the power of their privilege, are interested in learning more about colorism or simply interested in learning more about journalism. Women's leadership experts, Keisha Shields and Nikki Innocent, discuss the importance of owning your own legacy. Keisha shares experiences of having her identity defined by the perceptions and actions of others. She grew up being told that she was " too much" and began to caution herself before speaking, then she did the work of breaking free of that conditioning to live fully as her most authentic self. Her confidence is infectious. Keisha talks about her experience of being the youngest, the only female and the first Black executive at the "boy's club" that was her last employer. Nikki & Keisha discuss the realities of Keisha's partner being incarcerated, both in the obstacle of physical distance and in navigating socialized stereotypes. This conversation also touches on all things money -- Keisha explains how the appropriate allocation of resources leads to intergenerational legacy. And last, but most certainly not least, if you are someone that is interested in gender equity in the workplace, you'll enjoy these two women's leadership experts deep dive into the systemic & conditioned dynamics that hold women back from leading and how we can overcome them. Keisha Shields is a personal & business adviser to women leaders and is known for giving her clients huge “aha’s” moments. In Checkbox Other's first solo episode, host Nikki Innocent discusses the vital moment that America finds itself in following the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. Nikki reflects on the public outcry, the rally for whiteness to be acknowledged and the systems of oppression in our society to be called out, brought into the light and ultimately dismantled. She encourages listeners to DO THE WORK and actively unpack their own internalized oppression while at the same time holding themselves accountable and working towards an ideological shift to use white privilege to stop the pervasive harm being inflicted on black lives. Nikki invites listeners who are white to sign up to actively work on unpacking their whiteness and dismantle their oppressive conditioning. In this episode, Keisha Shields has a Conversation with a Friend, Nikki Innocent. Keisha & Nikki talk about the experiences of being a young "black" woman in corporate, about that feeling of being silenced and seeing other women with brilliant visions being silenced in the workplace. Keisha & Nikki also dig into coping and getting out from underneath narcissistic "leaders" and venturing out into their own independent coaching & consulting companies as well as various other entrepreneurial ventures. Keisha & Nikki also talk about the hardships that can come with being the coach in friendships and in finding and owning their stories and voices. Nikki Innocent is a humanity activist, keynote speaker, and social entrepreneur with a focus on women's leadership and diversity & inclusion. After over a decade of experience in the corporate world, at companies like Bain & Company and Bain Capital, Nikki left her corporate career and ventured into the entrepreneurial world to find a solution to the challenges she faced in the workplace. She is a certified new paradigm women's leadership coach and diversity & inclusion facilitator who works with both individuals and groups. Her company, Story & Voice, offers both small and large-scale training implementations for organizations who are looking for an action based approach to overcome diversity & inclusion hurdles in a shame-free environment. Nikki is a two-time TEDx speaker who dives into topics of belonging, inclusion and leading authentically. Her first TEDx talk is about embracing the times in life where you feel like you don't fit in, the times you feel “other” and her second TEDx is all about rewriting the rules in your life to thrive fully as you. Nikki also speaks about the next generation of leadership, recognizing and overcoming burnout, betting on yourself, finding and following your purpose and so much more. Nikki's podcast, Checkbox Other, explores a variety of topics and features guests who discuss times in their lives where they have felt "other" or that they didn't belong. The power of witnessing these stories is that we experience empathy and shared humanity. We see that despite the ways we differ, we are much more alike than we are different.
All right. I say authentic. And you? Overall, I'm sure you're rolling your eyes. I get it. But listen. Authentic leadership, is so true to what Nikki Innocent is all about. I think you're gonna love this conversation. And what you're going to hear is two big hearted coaches who truly care about humans and just kick out all the topics that are like that. Nikki Innocent, like me, was corporate bread but now she's out in the world being a coach and entrepreneur. She is a podcast host of "Check Box Other," which has really in-depth conversations with other change makers and I love the uniqueness of her approach. She's also both a keynote speaker and a fellow tech speaker. So enjoy the time and give authentic leadership a chance as we listen to Nikki talk about how she moved from sort of that quirky, bossy young leader to really an evolved boss. So enjoy. “Business was something that felt very concrete. It wasn't something I thought I was interested in, really. I just felt like it was safe. And I wanted to create a safe space for me to be able to kind of lay the foundation of the next parts of my life. Cause so much had happened that felt like it was out of my control.” At minute 8:18, Nikki talks about a time in her life when circumstances were out of her control but she used her energy to focus on her passion and career in her future, something she took full reign of and gained control over. “Giving yourself not only the time to prioritize the bullets on the job description, but really to prioritize the bullets in your life of who you are, how you bring your best self, but also the best energy to the party and what can help you grow into the person you want to be. Because I promise you, when you identify those, you can map them to the thing that's productive within your organization.” At 19:41, Nikki talks about how she intentionally took time for reflection, self awareness, and personal development. “Self compassion specifically, I think is so important. I'm doing the best I can. I'm going to continue to do the best that I can. I'm not going to be perfect, but that's OK. Not meaning, I get a pass because I didn't do something. But like, I'm not going to beat myself up because I think what happens, especially when we get to a point where we see what we didn't do well, we beat ourselves up and then we default back to kind of the concrete analytical stuff to show stuff.” At minute 45:58, Nikki talks about giving yourself grace and compassion as a leader, both for the sake of your team and yourself. Nikki shared a lot of valuable information about how she is always trying to express herself authentically in her personal life and in her business. She also gave a lot of helpful tips to fellow entrepreneurs, so make sure to stay tuned! Whenever I go to events or conferences, I don't try to meet the most people, I try to meet the right people. It's usually just one to three people and today's guest was one of those people from an event I attended in 2018, Nikki Innocent. Nikki's big truth was around it being the right time and place right now for anyone to be here, in this particular vessel, creating change in one way or another. From there we talked about bearing witness to other people's stories, what it brings up for us and how to be with discomfort when it arises. We're also both communication nerds so we spent a good bit of time getting into the difference between tone policing and methodology, self-policing, the many polarities we live in, cancel culture, what progress actually looks like and conversations stoppers, deflection tactics and accountability. We talked about the components of a real, effective apology and how to embrace and show up as who we are now as we grow. If you're a fan of nuance, context and complexity, you're going to love this one. Share it up and let us know what lands for you! xo, E For more information and for full show notes, head to http://untameyourself.com/323 Truth Telling with Elizabeth DiAlto aims to cut through the noise and ignorance of our current culture by exploring the truths of a diverse range of incredible voices. College classmates Jessica Skupien and host Nikki Innocent dive into the ins and outs of the Enneagram, the feeling of losing yourself in the search of corporate "success" and the tug of war between credentials and credibility.
This first episode of Checkbox Other is a reverse interview where Nikki’s cousin, Meghan, interviews our host about the journey, through career shifts and personal obstacles, that has led to creating this podcast. You’ll get a peek into a few key moments when both Nikki and Meghan have felt “othered” in their lives and a glimpse into some of the self-discovery work Nikki has been up to in order to connect more fully with the work she is doing and the world around her. This episode will be especially interesting for anyone looking to work on boosting their self-compassion and reigning in their self-judgement.
Checkbox Other is a podcast from leadership coach and humanity activist, Nikki Innocent, that celebrates people who don’t fit in a defined box or category. In Checkbox Other, we focus on creating a safe, warm and welcoming space to explore experiences where people are feeling the options provided by society don’t match who and what they truly are. While the initial sentiment of “othering” experiences can be isolating or negative, there is a universal part of feeling “othered” -- we have all felt it to some degree. The magic in the sharing these stories of otherness is that we become more connected with how, as humans, we are all more the same than we are different.
Nikki Innocent is not only a She Geeks Out ambassador and diversity and inclusion facilitator, but she is also the Founder of marketing consultancy Story & Voice and a women's leadership coach.
