In this episode, I had the honor of welcoming 2021 Oregon Teacher of the Year Nicole Butler-Hooton as my special guest. In our conversation, Nicole shares her personal journey in education, how she centers her identity as an Indigenous educator in the classroom, her educational advocacy work throughout her home state of Oregon, transitioning from the classroom into her new role as a Teacher mentor for this new school year, and so much more! To learn more about Nicole's work, you can visit the CCSSO website at https://ntoy.ccsso.org/2021-state-teacher-of-the-year-oklahoma-jena-nelson/ or follow her on Instagram (@nbutlertoy2021) and Twitter (@ButlerHooton). BIO: “Be the Change you wish to see in the world,” by Mahatma Ghandi, is the quote that best describes 2021 Oregon Teacher of the Year Nicole Butler-Hooton. She is a thoughtful, connected, loyal Native American woman who believes in the value of family, friendships, community, and growth. She exemplifies living each day to its fullest. Born into a minority family where neither parent graduated high school and raised in a small coastal town, Butler-Hooton's personal drive to excel at the highest level resulted in her success in high school academics, sports, college, and in her personal and professional life. Butler-Hooton earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon (UO) in sociology with a minor in ethnic studies, and she was a recipient of the Sapsik'ʷałá grant, provided to high-performing Native American students striving to earn their Master's degree in education. Upon receiving her Master's, she secured a job in the Bethel school district teaching second grade at Irving Elementary in Eugene, Oregon, where she has taught for 15 years. Irving Elementary boasts a supportive community, which has empowered and affirmed Butler-Hooton's vibrant, inclusive, and culturally competent teaching style. Her colleagues, families, and students respect her well established classroom culture. Each day she teaches and transforms the lives of her students and families. Butler-Hooton's primary professional goal is to build rapport and make a positive difference. Butler-Hooton is involved in the Oregon Indian Education Association, Eugene Education Association, Northwest Christian University consortium, UO elementary education, and the Bethel School District professional learning community for culturally sustaining practices. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/identitytalk4educators/support

In this episode Chaplain Annie is dying to know what you do when someone you have a complex relationship with, dies before you've reconciled? So she speaks with Reverend Kerry Kesey who was raised by hippy parents, yes, she is related to Ken Kesey author of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and infamous Merry Prankster, Kerry's father, Dale, was on the infamous bus Further and as a child, her family lived on the Kesey farm commune. They lived in a bus, and even in tents in Northern Idaho while her parents tried to build a log cabin. She had her 3rd birthday at Woodstock.Though her childhood may seem like a fun dreamland for many folks, Kerry wanted to follow a very different path from her hippy parents. Her grandmother in Arkansas always brought her to church, and the stability there drew her to Jesus and the Church. So she felt called into ministry, graduating from Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Oregon with a B.S. in Church, Society and Family.  She then attended Lexington Theological Seminary, receiving her Masters in Divinity in 1999 and was ordained as a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Like her nomadic parents, she has served churches in Oregon, Texas, Kentucky, Kansas, Washington and Hawaii, and just recently began a ministry with the First Christian Church Fayette in Missouri.Kerry's hippy mother died suddenly in 2018.

If as a pastor you intentionally broke one of the Ten Commandments what would happen? Well, you’d probably either lose your job or your position. Or you’d be reprimanded or given a warning. Or, at the very least—maybe for using the Lord’s name in vain—you’d get a few dirty looks. But there is one commandment that, if you were to regularly disobey it, you would probably get a raise.Which commandment? The commandment to keep the Sabbath. Why is that? That’s what AJ Swoboda and I discuss in this episode of Spiritual Life and Leadership.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:AJ Swoboda is Assistant Professor of Bible and Theology at Northwest Christian University and author of Subversive Sabbath. The pace at which the Western world is living is not only not sustainable, it’s a suicide mission. The Sabbath undermines the empire of anxiety and hurry. The Sabbath is not a practice to improve your life. It will utterly disrupt everything you want. The kind of life we have grown accustomed to—full of busyness and hurry—is not truly life. The Sabbath originates in the Garden of Eden—before the Law.The importance of the Sabbath is seen in the story of the Hebrew slaves in Egypt. God wanted to restore to the Hebrews the Edenic rest. The Sabbath is a foretaste of what we will experience forever in Heaven. The ideal of the practice of Sabbath is a 24-hour period of rest. The early Christians transitioned the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday, which they called the Lord’s Day.AJ preached on the Sabbath for three weeks and people left his church. He realized that if he broke nine of the Ten Commandments he would lose his job, but if he broke the Sabbath he would get a raise.God said, “Remember the Sabbath Day.” It’s as though God knew this was the one commandment we would be most likely to forget.People who keep the Sabbath are wildly healthier people. When you enter into the Sabbath, the Sabbath begins to enter into you.Sabbath is not merely a day. It’s a state of being.AJ shares the way he is currently struggling with practicing the Sabbath. He is finding that God is in the struggle. You can find AJ on Twitter at @mrajswoboda.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:AJ SwobodaTwitter: @mrajswobodaBooks mentioned:Subversive Sabbath, by AJ SwobodaThe Sabbath, by Abraham HeschelEmotionally Healthy Spirituality, by Pete ScazzeroInstructions to leave a review of Spiritual Life and Leadership:Click HERE.Click on the link that says, "Listen on Apple Podcasts."In the window that opens, click the button that says, "Open Link."
