Joining me today is Army MAJ (Ret) Ruslan Emelyanov. Ruslan was born and raised in the former Soviet Union. When he turned 18, he was conscripted into the Soviet Army in 1989 and chose to be a Paratrooper. Over the next couple years, he accepted an invitation to attend the newly formed Russian Military Academy. He graduated in 1995 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Russian Army. He had also earned his Jumpmaster status at that time. His first assignment was to join his new unit already fighting in the First Chechen War. At the conclusion of the war, his unit redeployed in December 1996. Ruslan was then reassigned to Moscow and transferred to the Military Police. In 1998 as a Captain, he resigned his Commission and left the Russian Army. Family relatives who lived in California applied for a Green Card for Ruslan, and in 2000, he joined his relatives in Carmel, CA. When the Sep 11th attacks occurred in 2001, he contacted an Army recruiter about the possibility of joining the U.S. Army. The recruiter said he could enlist with a Green Card and signed him up as an 11B Infantry MOS. At 28, he attended Basic Training at Ft. Benning, GA. After graduating Basic, he attended Jump School and earned his U.S. Parachute Badge. His first assignment was to B Co., 2/35th Infantry at Schofield Barracks, HI. In 2003, he renounced his Russian citizenship and was sworn in as a U.S. citizen. In April 2004, his unit deployed to Afghanistan for a year tour. Upon returning, he was promoted to SGT. He also earned Jumpmaster in the U.S. Army. A few years later, he was recommended for OCS at Ft. Benning, and in 2007 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry. In 2009, Ruslan changed branches to Civil Affairs and spent the next 12 years working with Special Operations Forces out of Ft. Bragg, NC. He retired from the Army in 2023.

Did you know for every £1 you spend on even simple Biophilic Design enhancements, you could get £2.70 back? So reveals the new research conducted by Joyce Chan Shoof Architect and Sustainability Lead at the UK Parliament. Using a scientific approach with control environments, adding biophilic design elements to test the effect and then removing them to further test the effect of their absence, Joyce explains the rigorous approach she took over a seven-year period to arrive at her conclusion. This is a phenomenal breakthrough for those of us working in Biophilic Design. You can read the whole report here: https://plplabs.com/reap-what-you-sow-2/And come and see Joyce present the research in person at Workplace Trends in London on the 18th April 2024 https://workplacetrends.co/events/wtrs24-prog/We often have struggled trying to articulate the economic benefits of Biophilic Design, this research can be used to support arguments why businesses need it in the workplace. Joyce has also developed a framework to help designers work out what we need and the impact it will have. Using existing frameworks, like the Flourish model (as advocated by Professor Derek Clements Croome) and others, she has woven a great new model we can all hang our designs on.From a career as a practicing architect, Joyce explains that transferring to the client side within the Parliamentary Estate has been transformational in the way she sees building design from feasibility study through to construction. The change and the opportunity it gave her has inspired her to incorporate multidisciplinary approaches and to study the impact of taking a biophilic design on efficiency, productivity and well-being within the workplace.Just like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, one interesting outcome that she highlights during the podcast, the study concludes that an immersive approach to incorporating Biophilic Design in the workplace is less effective overall than a more measured approach. But she explains that the immersive effect was preferred by people. The results showed that the moderate Biophilic Design intervention (that which we could normally advocate) seems to be the best.Joyce sees academic rigour as an important part of her role when leading a complex development. Since 2017, she has been conducting this doctoral research with the Design School at Loughborough University, focused on Sustainable Well-being in the workplace with a particular interest in biophilic and social value. She is a keen advocate of how Architects can make positive impacts towards allowing people to live happier and healthier. Her team sits within the Design Authority who are a group of design professionals and specialists who are managing the estate in Westminster, and their objective is to inject new thinking into the adaptive use of new and heritage buildings within the Parliamentary Estate – a UNESCO site. Parliament's vision is amibitious; it aims to set an example to lead the early adoption of Zero Carbon (Scope 1, 2 & 3), Healthy Buildings, Social Value and Circular Economy through our own refurbishment projects and procurement. The team manages the design, construction and operations of the Parliamentary Estate of 20 buildings including the Palace of Westminster. Joyce discusses her study of the economic benefits of incorporating a biophilic design approach to workspace and gives many insights into her approach and into how she found a way of attributing economic value to the benefits. Her wish is that we reconnect with nature, the sources of food, the feeling of being part of nature rather than living lives that separate us from the natural world. She wishes that all of us benefit from an improved environment, and her research is a massive and welcome step in that direction. To register for Workplace Trends and meet Joyce in person on the 18th of April 2024: https://workplacetrends.co/events/wtrs24-prog/Reap What You Sow: What's the value (£) of Biophilic Design? (14.40)– Joyce Chan-Schoof (RIBA), PhD Research Researcher, Loughborough University and Sustainability Lead, UK ParliamentGiven employees are the largest cost for a business, to what extent can biophilic design save companies money by ensuring that staff are healthier and happier at work? We explore these questions by delving into the monetary benefits of biophilic design. This presentation presents new ways to capture the tangible well-being and environmental values of connecting with nature in the workplace. This project is part of a doctoral research project at Loughborough University in collaboration with PLP Architects, Benholm and Reading University. Joyce's research is funded by the Design Star (AHRC), and the BCO sponsored the pilot study.Read more and follow up on the research:https://plplabs.com/wearables-in-the-workplace/https://www.bco.org.uk/Research/Publications/Use_of_Wearables_In_The_Office_-_A_review_and_examples_in_practice.aspxHave you got a copy of the Journal? In 1989 when Australian rock bands like Midnight Oil and INXS were screaming up the charts in the US, you'd think the easiest thing in the world would be to present one more and let them continue the streak. Such was not the story of Boom Crash Opera. Despite getting some airplay for "Onion Skin" off their second album, These Here Are Crazy Times, and despite having material just as strong as their peers, it didn't happen and BCO never got their just due (except back home where they remain a draw). Guitarist and primary songwriter Peter Farnan joins us this week to detail the whole story and discuss his wonderful solo career. What's surreal about all of this is that Peter is a fan of the show, making this a mutual appreciation society meeting! Enjoy and please dig into some BCO. It's killer! www.boomcrashopera.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
BCO crew talk about some current WA bills and how we all can help. After we jump into hunting Africa as Kris prepares himself for another crazy adventure.
It's been 20 years since The Soldiers of Blackhawk Company 1st of The 23rd Infantry Regiment. This interview is with my former Driver Christopher Burritt. Burritt had the pleasure of driving B6 during our operational deployment in 2003-2004. Chris was one of the many heroes that I served with throughout my military service, and he has been working to launch his business. Part of the remaster is to bring attention to the previous shows that I shot during the pandemic and the audio was not the best, but also to provide you with a much better clearer version of the discussion. This is just a hint of who we were back then, and Blackhawk Company 1-23 was one of the formative years of my career and gave me a great understanding of what soldiers can do in the Army with some top cover and some initiative. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to lead in unit of distinction.Previous Show Description: Conversation with Christopher Burritt, former NCO from 1-23 Infantry. He now runs his own business American Twister Manufacturing. He mentioned Patriotic Online Marketplace, LLC www.pompUSA.org who assisted him in marketing his small business. I enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do as well. We had some audio issues, but I hope that you can hear it. We talked about some of the experiences that we had leading up to the 20th Anniversary of our First Deployment and the 4th of August 2004. Joe's book should be out on Amazon this year by 4 August, but we are planning to talk again before the release of the book. Lots of links in this one but they will add some context to what we talked about during the show today. Stephen Russell, a former airborne infantryman with a decade of military service. He brings a unique perspective shaped by his deployment with Bco 1/12 3HBCT 1st Cav DIV to Baqubah, Iraq, during the surge in 2006-2007. Beyond the battlefield, he's a versatile artist, currently contributing to the comic series Tales of Nihilism and open for traditional art commissions. He believes the U.S. hasn't fully reckoned with the aftermath of 9/11, emphasizing the need to confront our collective anger and hate. His memoir, Troublemakers: The Greatest Dog and Pony Show in Iraq, is a compelling exploration of the nature of war and its lasting impact on current events—a moral imperative to illuminate the foundations shaping our world today.Thank you for pressing play on this small veteran podcast. If you enjoyed leave a little love with a review. It would not only help me reach more veterans but also make my whole week!
