On today's episode, Wisdom steps behind the curtain of the music business with Jess Loper, a seasoned veteran in the A&R and publishing world. In this insightful episode, Jess shares her wealth of knowledge and experience, demystifying the often-opaque realms of artists and repertoire (A&R), music publishing, and sync licensing. From scouting talent to navigating the intricate landscape of royalties and recoupment, Jess offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the industry. Whether you're an aspiring artist, songwriter, or simply a music enthusiast, this episode is a must-listen for anyone curious about the business side of music. Jess Loper began her career in the newsroom serving as an Editor with Business Wire who services the Associated Press with press releases for publicly held companies. From there she took her love of words into the music industry in the A&R department at Capitol CMG/Universal Music. In this position, she was an integral part of the production process for CMG's roster of artists (Amy Grant, Chris Tomlin, Kari Jobe, TobyMac, Passion/sixstepsrecords) while also working with business affairs, union negotiations, and film & tv licensing for the label. In 2017, she joined the team at Gotee Records as VP of Brand Management (Gotee Records) and Publishing (Emack Music). Gotee Records and Emack Music are a record label and a music publishing and administration company started in 1994 under the leadership of artist, TobyMac and label president, Joey Elwood. In this position, she handled A&R for artists Jon Reddick, Hollyn, Aaron Cole, Joseph O'Brien, Charly Beathard, and RENEE, cultivated writer relationships for Emack writers Tyrus Morgan, Hunter Leath, Ben Shive, and Lindsey Sweat, assisted with film and tv placements (ESPN, Fox Sports, ABC, NBC & VH1) and handled administration for Man Cub Music (Bryan Fowler & Micah Kuiper). Most recently, she launched Without Labels Collective, a company that focuses on music supervision and licensing for film & television (The Jesus Music Documentary, Trinity Broadcasting Networks, The Huckabee Show, Compassion International, and Thrive just to name a few). This new venture is also focused on educating and supporting songwriters & artists on the business side of the creative process. She serves on the Board of the CMPA and works closely with the GMA Dove Awards. Outside of her career in the music industry, her writing has been featured in the Huffington Post & Business Week Magazine among other digital news outlets and printed publications. Her greatest role in life has been getting to be a mom to Brody (15) & Kellen (12). In the Spring of '22, she married her favorite songwriter, Brent Loper, on the front porch of their little farmhouse in Culleoka, TN SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST: On Apple Podcasts On Spotify All other platforms CONNECT WITH US: Wisdom Moon on Instagram Lula Music Group Lula Music Group on Instagram Christian Artist Coach Lula Street Records Christian Music Industry Podcast on Instagram Pure Mosaic Collective --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christianmusicindustry/message

On today's episode, we chat with Ryan Stevenson! Ryan is known for songs such as, 'Eye of the Storm', and 'With lifted hands'! Ryan is a part of Gotee Records. Ryan's latest album, 'Able', is his best to date, following a season of listening, learning, and pressing into the promises of God. “I was raised in a strict religious environment, and I saw God through a lens of fear, wrath, and moodiness, thinking He was always disappointed in His creation,” Stevenson explains. “But in this last season, the Lord quietly led me out into a wilderness where He could get face-to-face with me. I believe He did this out of kindness and jealousy for my wholeness, to settle a lot of questions and doubts I've lived with for many years.”  “For the first time ever, I've become rooted and established in my beloved identity,” he adds. “The Holy Spirit has begun to peel off layers of insecurity and fear of rejection. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says we are ‘the righteousness of God,' and Galatians 2:20 says we 'have been crucified with Christ' and that everything connected with the old flesh has died. This revelation has pierced my heart and brought me tremendous freedom and a passion for helping others see Jesus through the same lens.” ABLE is also highlighted by the title-cut and debut single, a soul-stirring testimony of God's faithfulness written by Stevenson, Blake NeeSmith and Jeff Pardo. 'Able' is out this Friday! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christianmusicguys/support

Michael Cochren from Cochren and Co has  been playing music since high school and began touring his songs as a teenager. He asked some mates to join and form a band and were soon opening shows for the Newsboys and Jeremy Camp, among others. The biggest deal came when he was noticed and signed to Toby Macs label Gotee Records. It's just amazing that Toby  took him under his wing and encouraged him to be the best version of himself. This helped launch Cochren and Co. to a huge audience. He loves Billy Joel and NSYNC ,all who helped shaped his musical journey. It was a bible study at college that made him realized his faith was actually real. He has a beautiful non guilty relationship with God.  He is a big fan of shows like this and Christian radio for getting his music out there, having seen the impact he's had as people all over the world sing his songs. Humbled by people clinging to his lyrics during tough times. He wants to encourage you to stay in the word, stay close to the voice of god and engage with people, start a conversation and see where random conversations go. Super nice guy making music that matters. Spend some time with Cochren and Company on the God rock Show.

Danielle Kimmey Torrez, one-third of the award-winning Christian pop/dance/r&b group Out Of Eden, checks in to the show today. Out Of Eden (aka “OOE”) was the first artist signed to Gotee Records, co-owned by dcTalk member Toby McKeehan (aka tobyMac). Danielle, along with her sisters Lisa Kimmey (Winans) and Andrea Kimmey (Baca) teamed up to release seven albums from 1994-2006, including “This Is Your Life” in 2002, winning Dove Awards for “Urban Album of the Year” and “Song of the Year” in 2003. Danielle shares candid thoughts on music, family, racial challenges in our culture, and more, all wrapped up in a strong faith in God. The conversation is part retrospective and includes a couple of cuts from an in-studio interview Danielle, Lisa & Andrea did with WFIL’s sister station 990 AM WNTP (then, WZZD) in February 2004 when in town to promote their new album “Love, Peace & Happiness.” Danielle also gives an update as to what she and her sisters are each doing in 2019. A pleasure to catch up with Danielle (and indirectly, the group) once again!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In order to make sense or find meaning in our lives in early childhood, we develop narratives that sort of explain our life experiences. We often choose specific incidents that we string together into the plot we now live.  But, have you ever stopped to ask yourself if the story you are living is true? In today’s episode with singer/songwriter Ryan Stevenson, we really tackle the concept of owning your own narrative and challenge whether the interpretations of your own story are in fact true. And if they’re not, the Enneagram can help provide you with some clarity about the story you’re living in right now. We hope this episode encourages you to reflect on your own story.  To get started, simply ask yourself: Are my interpretations about who I am and the way the world is true? Is my story helping me simply “survive” life rather than to live it fully? And remember, you have the freedom and the power to change your story.  You can revise your interpretations and see your true story through a new lens.   About Ryan Stevenson  Following a seven-year stint as a paramedic, Pacific Northwest native Ryan Stevenson signed an exclusive agreement with Gotee Records in 2013 after capturing TobyMac’s attention by co-writing the No. 1 and Grammy nominated single “Speak Life," His first recording for the label was the Holding Nothing Back EP in 2013, which garnered the Top 25 single “Holding Nothing Back. This was followed by 2015’s full-length album Fresh Start, which featured the No. 1 radio single “Eye of the Storm”. With three No. 1 singles (two as an artist and one as a co-writer), a GRAMMY® nomination, Billboard Music Award nomination, a Dove Award (2017), ASCAP honors and major tour bills with the likes of TobyMac, MercyMe, Newsboys and Matt Maher, among others, Ryan has already distinguished himself as a rare talent whose unique perspective guides his honest lyrics and sonic sensibilities.

What does a teenage farm kid growing up in Pataskala, Ohio know about launching a career in hip-hop music and becoming a rapper — in the no-internet era of the mid-1990s? Arguably very little, but that didn’t stop a young John Zappin from pursuing his joy anyway. Always using humor as his safety shield, John embraced the uncomfortable moments of dropping his rhymes in front of audiences at summer camp, the church hall, and open mic nights to build his confidence and find his voice. That voice would eventually ink a deal with Gotee Records where he would go on to record six albums. In a pre-file sharing, pre-American Idol world, John put in the work to carve out his niche in an unlikely genre of rap. John shares his story and drops some wisdom for anyone pursuing their dream. But now on the cusp of 40 and having already achieved a level of success that any recording artists would envy, John is like that teenage kid all over again: back in Ohio and asking “what if" and wondering “what’s next.”
