Space out.  No, really, go ahead and think of your favorite space themed games, movies, and books, because on this episode of Data Center Therapy, your host Matt “PlexMan” Cozzolino welcomes Ryan Grelck into the virtual studios to talk about 2022 and what fun things are right around the corner.  Don't be fooled, however, as the duo also talk about Linux as a desktop operating system, ransomware, and transparent network virtualization technologies all in the same episode!  While taking you, our dear listeners, on an intergalactic journey through the greatly anticipated entertainment releases of late 2021 and 2022, Ryan and Matt also discuss: Why manning a Security Operations Center typically requires more people than you'd initially estimate. If Linux gaming is ready for prime-time, and the performance price you might pay to play on it. And why NSX-T's most nifty feature is not the much-vaunted microsegmentation and VM firewalling it's known for.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          This episode is a whirlwind of topics so there's something for just about everybody.  If you're into Dune, Star Wars, Fallout, or the Half-Life series, there's definitely something here for you.    Please be sure to like, share and subscribe the Data Center Therapy show wherever finer podcasts are found, and be safe, stretch your Layer 2 network (across the country) if you feel like it (with NSX-T!), be entertained, get excited and we'll catch you on the next episode of Data Center Therapy!

Question: When does a 40-minute podcast episode feel like a fun 15-minute chat beside the old water cooler? (Remember when that was still a thing?)   Answer: When it’s Matt “Lemme tell you something about Android” Yette and Matt “Got YubiKey?” Cozzolino talking about multi-factor authentication! Our intrepid hosts of Data Center Therapy have a lively and always topical talk about MFA and more in this latest chapter.  You, our welcome listeners, get to hear about: How TouchID, FaceID, and biometrics are an important part of the multi-factor authentication story (and if they’re generally proven to be secure). How Duo, Okta, Microsoft and Google Authenticator apps as well as password management software tie into enabling better security. When a “backup plan” involving printouts, USB keys, or a big heavy safe might be a good idea for a CYA factor. You’ll also get to hear cringey tales of sticky notes under keyboards, badly designed applications (for banks!) that improperly used two-factor auth, and how back in the day PayPal sent Yette a nifty gadget, now long gone.  Tune in to have some fun, learn a little, and come away from the conversation with a fresh perspective on how to lock things down. As mentioned in the episode, if you’re interested in attending Matt Cozzolino’s “Introduction to Microsegmentation with NSX-T” class, please be sure to reach out to your IVOXY Account Manager to register for the class before it fills completely up.  If you enjoyed the episode, please be sure to like, subscribe and share wherever finer podcasts are found.   Be safe, be healthy, subscribe to the “something you have, something you know, and something you are” model of security, and we’ll keep the lights on for you, our loyal DCT friends!  See you next time.

Mack and the Matts chat about: What the basic recipe of SD-WAN is, and where you’d want to use it in your corporate and datacenter networks. How SD-WAN can act as a unified management platform for wide area connectivity, how it can efficiently enable cloud applications. Who the players are in the SD-WAN space, such as CloudGenix, Silver Peak, Velocloud and Viptela, and how various acquisitions of the OEMs by other companies affects them. Mack also shares an “I’ve never seen that before!” about his experience working with SD-WANs in the field.  Note that there’s some audio difficulties with Mack’s studio set up on this episode, but loyal listeners will be rewarded with a great introduction to this new world of high-bandwidth, managed-performance, cloud-enabled 2021-ready networking technologies. As Yette mentions, drop the promo code PODCASTPODS when you register for Cozzolino’s Introduction to Microsegmentation with NSX-T class and you’ll receive $1,000 off and a pair of AirPods Pros, so register now before the class fills up completely!  And as always, be sure to like, subscribe and share your love for DCT wherever finer podcasts and social media are found. There’s a couple kubernetes announcements this week: we mostly talk about Pivotal’s, and a tad on IBM. Buy Coté’s book dirt cheap (https://leanpub.com/digitalwtf/c/sdt)! Mood Board: Evil Hodor is cancelled. Must be this short to ride free. The full mullet of monitoring. There is no nuance to this statement. Just keep using VMware. If you’re compiling the source code, you’re gonna have problems. LAMP stack. Tell me how to do what I want, not why I can’t do it. Relevant to your interests Pivotal kubernetes stuff (https://content.pivotal.io/home-page/pivotal-build-service-now-alpha-assembles-and-updates-containers-in-kubernetes), alpha of running all the stuff on Kubernetes (PKS), Pivotal’s JRE/Tomcat product now GA. “PAS on Kubernetes is packaged as a tile for Ops Manager, and uses BOSH to deploy its system components. It requires vSphere, NSX-T, and Enterprise PKS. “ (“Tile” is Pivotal speak for “feature/sub-system/plugin/extension/component/product/etc.”) Good summary from NL coverage (https://www.computable.nl/artikel/techwire/digital-transformation/6706859/2499347/pivotal-lanceert-alfaversie-pas-op-kubernetes.html): Build Service: Easily automates container images for developers and offers companies audit and security controls that are needed to work with confidence on a large scale. Build Service is made possible by the CNCF Cloud-Native Buildpacks project and is co-developed by Pivotal. RabbitMQ for Kubernetes: Automates the implementation and management of RabbitMQ. In addition, RabbitMQ is configurable and offers a self-service experience for developers; Service Mesh: Automates the installation and configuration of Istio. This allows developers to drop apps to production quickly and safely. In addition, it provides secure networks that businesses need. Spring Runtime: It offers comprehensive support for Java environments, including OpenJDK, Spring Support and Apache Tomcat. The New Stack: The Pivotal Application Service Addresses Kubernetes Complexity (https://thenewstack.io/the-pivotal-application-service-addresses-kubernetes-complexity/). Pretty good summary (https://siliconangle.com/2019/07/16/pivotal-lets-developers-go-kubernetes-new-application-service/) of Pivotal Cloud Foundry as a whole: “Pivotal Application Service is a software application development platform based on the open-source Cloud Foundry project, which provides a range of clouds, developer frameworks and app services to work with. The idea is to make it easier for developers to build, test, deploy and scale up their apps on a variety of cloud platforms.” Taft (https://searchmicroservices.techtarget.com/news/252467009/Pivotal-tools-aim-to-ease-Kubernetes-complexity-for-developers): “This reflects an important strategic shift by Pivotal to acknowledge the importance of Kubernetes as an integral component of customers' application modernization programs, said Charlotte Dunlap, an analyst at GlobalData in Santa Cruz, Calif.” Jeffrey Hammond, Forrester (https://searchmicroservices.techtarget.com/news/252467009/Pivotal-tools-aim-to-ease-Kubernetes-complexity-for-developers): "For a while I've spoken to enterprises that are worried that they have to make a choice: PAS and Cloud Foundry, or go with Kubernetes and give up what they like about PAS. This makes it possible to keep what they like about PAS and work at a higher level of abstraction, without worrying about somehow missing out on all the innovation going on in the Kubernetes world." On the 17th episode of Virtual Stack Podcast, I’m joined by Dumlu Timuralp (NSX Sr. Systems Engineer at VMware) and we take on the challenge of squeezing all the new features of NSX-T 2.4 into a 45-minute podcast! NSX is VMware’s flagship software-defined data center networking and security solution. On this episode, we try to summarise the new features and focus on the key areas; intelligent operations, security, networking and more. Great to have Dumlu on the show for the 2nd time. You can reach out to him via LinkedIn and Twitter, and expect to listen to him on his next appearance soon. Hope you enjoy the show. Feel free to share your feedback via Twitter (@emregirici), LinkedIn or virtualstack.tech.
