For centuries, the Bible has been revered as "the Good Book," serving as a moral and religious guide that leads us into a relationship with God and shows us the path to righteous living. However, in modern times, there are those who argue that the Bible is outdated and potentially harmful. Many Christians are unaware of the odd and disturbing passages contained within its pages. Whether you identify as a Christian, a skeptic, or someone new to exploring the Bible, Pastor Ernest Grant offers a guiding hand. He leads you step-by-step in understanding these challenging and perplexing passages, providing clarity and insight along the way. There really is no way to describe John Waters's work other than queer, which is why Pink Flamingos (1972) had to be our third Pride Month pick. An indie made on a shoe-string budget and starring drag icon Divine as the "filthiest person alive," this flick truly pushes the envelope, and it doesn't matter if we're talking poop, penises, or poultry. Like Degrassi, it goes there — which is why we enlisted a little extra help to cover it. On our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're joined by John Waters fan and filmmaker Paul Jacob Presley as we break down this creepy, crass camp classic. “We had to go back to the ratings board five times. It was a long journey. You have to laugh sometimes, because we had some really grotesque imagery in our film. We even have a demon phallus in the film and nobody was worried about that. It was really the image of the vagina that was getting us that rating,” says Arkasha Stevenson, director, and co-screenwriter for The First Omen, about initially getting an NC17 rating from the Motion Picture Association. After much back and forth, the film is now rated R. The First Omen was written by Tim Smith and Arkasha Stevenson with Stevenson also directing. The film is a prequel to the classic horror film The Omen (1976) and stays true to the narrative that brings Damian, the antichrist, into the world. But keeping faithful to the original film proved to be challenging in a number of ways. “Because we grew up on The Omen,” says Stevenson, “it has such a special place in our hearts. We knew that it has such a special place every horror fan's heart, too… We didn't want to tarnish anything, so trying to find a balance where we were trying to create something new, and have our own world, and characters and messages within that, but also pay homage to the original omen, and also have tie-ins and callbacks – it was interesting to try and figure out how to have a conversation with the original film,” she says. We also discuss how the film explores the theme of control over women's bodies and how the current political climate factored into the story considering abortion is such a hot-button issue. To hear more about the writing of the film and how Stevenson and Smith came to the project, listen to the podcast.

It is not often that we cover box office blockbusters. There is the occasional special edition, but most of the films we cover tend to fly under the mainstream radar. Late Night with the Devil does not change that, but it has done some interesting business. But as is par for the course nowadays, it comes with a bit of controversy. We love hearing about movies that have taken things too far. The First Omen had already hooked up thanks to its awesome trailer. It was recently revealed that it was almost rated NC-17 - and not for the reasons you might think. This certainly sounds exciting at first, but are there ulterior motives behind this revelation? There are some names that are common throughout horror. There are plenty of movies called “The Curse” or have “Revelations” in their title. And while you wouldn't think there would be two movies called Easter Bunny Massacre, it should not be that shocking. The fact that they are both about friends who share a dark secret having a reunion before being picked off by a killer dressed in an Easter bunny outfit is certainly strange. Obviously, it takes elements from I Know What You Did Last Summer, so it should come as no surprise that it borrows liberally from Scream. But when do you cross the line between homage and rip-off? (Here's a hint; taking scenes word for word and shot for shot is a little much.) Easter Bunny Massacre: The Bloody Trail sounded like dumb fun, but just ended up being dumb. There was no way that Easter Bloody Easter was not going to provide some sort of entertainment. Its story involving a killer jackalope and an army of killer bunny rabbits was just too silly. And the climax provided the kind of bonkers excitement that we knew we were going to get.Regrettably, that was the only part of the film that lived up to its promise. How do you get the tone wrong in a ridiculous comedy horror? Include a toxic relationship and alcoholism for starters. And that is just the start of many problems in Easter Bloody Easter? Were the genuinely funny moments enough to overcome its many flaws? And will we ever do another Easter episode again? Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Finally I've stepped into the world of David Cronenberg films. It really is fitting that the first one I see and review is Crash from 1996. It was both me and Charles' first watch and we were enthralled. The exploration of subcultures I always find fascinating and this certain was that. We talk about the physical reactions to car crashes, how James Spader is THAT one, and constantly remind you that it's not the same film as that abomination that won Best Picture in 2004. off-topic rants include: who we would like to see in the film now, Christopher Meloni, Coen films, the history of NC-17 movies--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! While the team re-assembles, Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill goes solo to discuss the history of sex in American cinema and the X and NC-17 rating. Craig marvels that 50 years ago X-rated movies like MIDNIGHT COWBOY were winning Best Picture and THE DEVIL IN MISS JONES were mainstream, making the equivalent of $100 million dollars, and getting 3 star ratings from Roger Ebert while now American studios, filmmakers, and films seem to have no idea how to deal with sex scenes (and so avoid them). For the societal health of the country, Craig advocates for the emergence of the "adult sex movie" as a mainstream genre like action, horror, fantasy & sci-fi, and the superhero. It would help bring conversations about sex and sexuality back into the light and mainstream.

Joe Escalante's weekly glimpse into the business end of showbiz. This week: the latest from the box office (Gran Tourismo unseats Barbenheimer!), Youtube racist algorithm wins a lawsuit, and a couple of sports stories, one that hits home in LA. First, Michael Oher blindsides everyone who thought his wholesome story would have a happy ending. And, former USC Trojan Reggie Bush wants his Heisman back. Might as well... not like he killed anyone, amirite, OJ???Oh, also, Joe goes into the history of the NC-17 rating, and how it replaced the X-rating in theaters. Quick question: since porn co-opted XXX, what ever happened to those slightly classier XX films???

We have a lot to say about the two films from the Sundance Film Festival, but before we talk about them, we have a discussion about the Academy Awards and the Razzies. Neither of us are huge fans of the Oscars, but we understand their place in cinema. The Razzies, however... We also discuss the new Scream VI poster. We brush over Young Adult themes in genre, but never really cover any. During this week's Genre of the Future we do just that. We also cover a couple of lukewarm trailers and the edited version of one of the films we are covering this week. Plus, our problem with The Last of Us.My Animal from the Sundance Film Festival is not your typical werewolf story, though it does start out like one. The film is an family drama, teen romance, and outsider story. It covers a number of themes and is one of the most unique looking creature features you will see. So why couldn't we get completely behind it?Infinity Pool is one of the our most anticipated movies of this year. The Sundance World Premiere also gave us a chance to see it in all its unedited glory. Brandon Cronenberg's latest is a strange watch that is lives in the moment while also telling a deeper story. We also talk about the amazing Mia Goth and what is sure to be a polarizing ending.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Special thanks to Jefferson Moore, independent filmmaker, for providing the guest intro for this repeat episode. Episode Tie-In: The film “Blonde,” which is the subject of controversy due to its NC17 rating and graphic nature, airs on Netflix on September 23. For more details on the controversy, listen to our SW update episode posted on August 30th. CW: Adult themes/descriptions of violence; listener discretion is advised. Although often stereotyped as the ‘dumb blonde' character, Marilyn Monroe was actually a complicated woman who overcame a traumatic childhood, studied acting with Lee Strasberg, co-founded her own production company, and formed relationships with a number of high-profile, powerful men. Sadly, Marilyn's promising career was cut short in 1962 when she was found dead, nude in her bed with a telephone receiver in hand, the victim of an apparent overdose. She was only 36. But was Marilyn's death really the result of an overdose and ‘probable suicide,' as the coroner declared at that time? Or was Marilyn intentionally silenced, as many did and still believe, including her close friend Frank Sinatra?

Hop on into the squad car and bear witness to one of the most notorious cops in cinematic history with Bad Lieutenant, Abel Ferrara's controversial 1992 masterpiece. But before we scrutinize this grisly mugshot of a movie, this week's Blue Plate Special find us fielding 2022 thoughts on Steven Spielberg's 1979 disaster 1941 (with us so far?); glancing into the hall of mirrors psychological gauntlet Synecdoche, New York from none other than Charlie Kaufman; and find a lot to love in Nope, Jordan Peele's latest blockbuster chiller. The time finally arrives to merge onto this episode's degenerative off-ramp of a movie, forcing us to confront an outright daring Harvey Keitel performance while grappling with what sets Ferrara and his direction apart within the crime genre, not to mention a discussion of content that warranted the film its infamous NC-17 rating. It goes without saying this episode isn't for the faint of heart but perhaps you'll agree that the unlikely redemption makes the brutalist filmmaking all the more rewarding. In this episode Cy Kellett asks Trent to explain how the Bible can be the Word of God and contain incredibly disturbing depictions of sex and violence.
One strategy used by those who want to denigrate the Bible is to say it doesn't meet Christian standards of what is acceptable in the media. It's a clever move, but is it true that the Bible is too sexy and violent for respectable reading? Cy Kellett : Should the Bible be reserved for mature audiences only? Trent Horn is next. Cy Kellett : Hello, and welcome to Focus, the Catholic Answers podcast for living, understanding and defending your Catholic faith.
