Senate Democrats want audit of DOGE access to federal systems; Army Secretary forces West Point to rescind appointment given to Jen Easterly

The digital footprint left by DOGE in agency computer systems and IT networks would be thoroughly examined under legislation introduced Wednesday by a trio of Senate Democrats. The Pick Up After Your DOGE Act from Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Ron Wyden of Oregon and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts would require the administrator of the Elon Musk-created tech collective to provide a full accounting to the U.S. comptroller general of all the agencies and IT systems that DOGE accessed. Those systems would then be subject to comprehensive performance and security audits. “The DOGE-boys have weaseled their way into Americans' most sensitive data systems, claiming to hunt ‘waste, fraud, and abuse,' while actually creating waste, fraud, and abuse. They're destroying Americans' trust in once-reliable government systems and could be hawking your stolen data to their friends in Big Tech and AI,” Whitehouse said in a press release. He added that the Pick Up After Your DOGE Act protects seniors and all Americans by fixing any bugs or backdoors that DOGE may have purposefully or negligently created in Social Security, Medicare, and other highly sensitive government data systems. The audit would be conducted by the Government Accountability Office, which has been bombarded with congressional requests to probe DOGE's agency IT dives since the beginning of the Trump administration. The United States Military Academy abruptly ended the appointment of Jen Easterly to a high-profile academic position in West Point's Department of Social Sciences, according to a memorandum issued Wednesday by the Secretary of the Army. On Tuesday, the academy announced that Easterly was named as the next Robert F. McDermott Distinguished Chair, a department position created in 1943 to bring a leading scholar, practitioner, or expert in the fields of social sciences — such as economics, political science, or international relations — to West Point. In a since-deleted LinkedIn post, the academy welcomed the former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency director and academy alumnus after “an extraordinary career of service in the public and private sectors,” adding that her “unique perspective — combining military experience, advanced academic training, private sector innovation, and senior government service — makes her ideally suited to guide discussions on the critical issues facing our nation and the world.” After the announcement, far-right activist Laura Loomer suggested on X that Easterly should not be named to the position, due to her work under the Biden administration, allegedly with Nina Jankowicz, who served as the executive director of the Disinformation Governance Board of the United States. (Jankowicz later Wednesday posted on BlueSky that she had never worked with Easterly.) On Wednesday, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll announced in a post on X that the position would be rescinded, and a full review of the academy's hiring practices would be conducted. Lillian Easterly-Smith's journey is one of unexpected impact. Birthed from her own recovery from alcohol use and multiple addictions, her passion for helping others find true healing has become her life's purpose. Lillian's journey found her at the helm of two major non-profit organizations. She has authored multiple recovery curriculums and co-authored several other books along with a fairly recent book with her husband and ministry partner, Mike Smith. She has achieved international acclaim in the world of pastoral care and counseling; and remains an in-demand keynote speaker.Arukah Ranch's story is rooted in the belief that addiction is often a symptom of underlying issues. Unlike traditional treatment centers that focus on the elimination of addictive behavior, Arukah Ranch is dedicated to root cause recovery. Recognizing that abstinence alone does not equate to healing, they emphasize identifying, treating, and removing the source of pain. This approach challenges the conventional narrative surrounding addiction recovery, making Arukah Ranch a distinctive and impactful player in the field. https://arukahranch.org/

On top of that, Palantir's Gotham and Apollo products — a data-driven enterprise mission-planning platform and an operational software deployment control center, respectively — will be installed in Microsoft Azure Government, as well as in the Azure Government Secret (Defense Department Impact Level 6) and Top Secret clouds. Meanwhile, the annual Black Hat conference kicked off this week in Las Vegas, and CISA Director Jen Easterly spoke about how she views the recent CrowdStrike outage that caused millions of computers around the world to malfunction as “a useful exercise” for understanding what Chinese-linked cyber operations focused on sensitive U.S. networks could accomplish. If tensions were to escalate in the Pacific, the U.S. could see Beijing take action via the malicious campaign known as the Volt Typhoon to disrupt critical infrastructure similar to what the CrowdStrike outage caused, but at a more significant and perious scale. “A war in Asia will be accompanied by very serious threats to Americans — the explosion of pipelines, the pollution of water systems, the derailing of our transportation systems, the severing of our communications,” Easterly said. Pianist/composer Jack Wilson: "Easterly Winds"

Tonight's Jazz Feature is by a fine pianist who always seemed to have a bit of an undeserved low profile. His name is Jack Wilson and he was born in Chicago on August 3, 1936 and passed away at age 71 on October 5, 2007. He was a favorite of some great singers like Nancy Wilson and Dinah Washington and was sought after for his musicality and fine touch. Wilson performed in Chicago with all the great players from the Windy City then moved for a few years to New York and recorded several good albums for Atlantic Records then out to Los Angeles where he kept busy in the movie and TV studios and played a lot of Jazz too. He got a contract to record for Blue Note Records and did 3 albums for them and tonight's Jazz feature is his best of the 3. "Easterly Winds" displays Wilson's playing and his composing abilities and this band selected by Wilson sounds like a working band even though they were only assembled for this album. The people involved aside from Jack Wilson are Lee Morgan on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Garnett brown on trombone, Bob Cranshaw on bass and the great Billy Higgins on drums. Wilson wrote 4 of the 6 tunes on the date and does the ballad "A Time for Love" as a trio and brings in a tune by saxophonist Frank Strozier called "Frank's Tune". "Easterly Winds" is an overlooked latter day classic and it tonight's Jazz Feature. Check it out!.

By the end of the year, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency plans to launch an automated vulnerability warning program to alert organizations that are running software with vulnerabilities being exploited by ransomware gangs, the agency's director, Jen Easterly, said this week. Currently running in a pilot phase, the program is mandated by the Cyber Incident Reporting for Critical Infrastructure Act of 2022 and aims to reduce the number of ransomware attacks by getting the owners and operators of vulnerable systems to patch them before they can be infiltrated. Speaking at an event hosted by the Institute for Security and Technology, Easterly said the pilot is focused on reducing the prevalence of ransomware by using vulnerability scanning tools to let businesses know if they have vulnerabilities that need to be patched. CISA has issued 2,049 warnings since the pilot was launched last January. It has since expanded to include CISA's database of known exploited vulnerabilities and common misconfigurations that can be linked to ransomware attacks.

Photo Credit: Tyler Follon - Wingman VisualsIn this episode of the Moral Imagination Podcast, I speak with Professor William Easterly of New York University about his work in development economics, and the problems of technocracy and social engineering of the poor. Easterly worked at the World Bank from 1985-2001 and began to be troubled by a number of things, including how aid is given without much concern about how it is distributed and managed thus subsidizing bad governance and harming the poor. We discuss Peter Bauer's critique of how foreign aid politicizes development and delayed the development of business in Africa, and Bauer's paradox of aid: * The countries that need aid — aid will not be effective* The countries where aid will be effective — do not need aid But the key problem with the dominant model of development is not simply a lack of efficiency, but the failure to respect the rights and agency of poor people. Easterly explains that development projects often result in people being deprived of their property, political rights, and participation and consent in the very projects that are supposed to help them. He discussed the tendency to to trivialize problems in the developing world, and the lack of feedback and market tests in development policy. We discuss how the developing world can often become a a lab for experiments for technocrats and social engineers. We also talk about Hayek's Knowledge Problem, a response to Marianna Mazucatto idea of moonshots, and what I call “embedded'“ economics. We discuss a number of issues including * “The Debate that Never Happened” - Gunnar Myrdal vs. Friedrich Hayek on development economics* Social Engineering * Technocracy and the Hubris of the Technocrat * Spontaneous Order* Edmund Burke and Friedrich Hayek * Soviet 5-year central planning as model for economic development * Limited Horizons of Humanitarianism— a secular, hollowed out version of Christian love the focuses on material at the expense of personal agency. * Lack of Accountability * Material vs. Non-material Needs * Materialist visions of the human person * People have a right to consent to their own progress * Harry Potter novels vs. Mosquito Nets * Marianna Mazucatto's ideas of Moonshots * vs. accidental discovery* vs opportunity costs * vs failed social engineering projects * and the complexity of economics and markets embedded in deep historical, cultural, norms, institutions, and religious foundations. * How to think about foreign aid and public goods like healthcare, infrastructure, education* Aid for emergencies vs. aid as answer to chronic poverty* Institutions of Justice including clear title to land, access to justice in the courts, ability to participate in the formal economy, and free exchange. * The impact of globalization on manufacturing in the US* Trade-offs and economic volatility * The moral rules that are needed for progress to beneficial * Consent, Self-Determination, Moral Equality * Attempts to develop Native Americans, US intervention in Philippines etc. * Material progress is never enough to justify interventionBiography William Easterly is Professor of Economics at New York University and Co-director of the NYU Development Research Institute, which won the 2009 BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge in Development Cooperation Award. He is the author of three books: The Tyranny of Experts: Economists, Dictators, and the Forgotten Rights of the Poor (March 2014), The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good (2006), which won the FA Hayek Award from the Manhattan Institute, and The Elusive Quest for Growth: Economists' Adventures and Misadventures in the Tropics (2001).He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed academic articles, and has written columns and reviews for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Review of Books, and Washington Post. He has served as Co-Editor of the Journal of Development Economics and as Director of the blog Aid Watch. He is a Research Associate of NBER, and senior fellow at the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD). Foreign Policy Magazine named him among the Top 100 Global Public Intellectuals in 2008 and 2009, and Thomson Reuters listed him as one of Highly Cited Researchers of 2014.
