This episode discusses a contemporary use of the term castration, introduced by Freud. Cantin distinguishes between imaginary, symbolic, and real castration in relation to different moments of the human individual life and to the psychoanalytic cure, highlighting the relevance of castration as a work that liberates subjects from the cultural montage of sexuality that hijacks unconscious desire. The second half of the episode specifically explores the experiences and difficulties women face with regard to taking responsibility for their desire.Special thanks to Tracy McNulty for recording the translated interview with me, to Amelia Gayle for working on the translation from French to English, and Omar Brown, Luke Heister, and Abhipsa Chakraborty for their editorial work on this episode!Find Lucie Cantin's work here:“The Drive, the Untreatable Quest of Desire” — differences“The Borderline, or the Impossibility of Producing a Negotiable Form in the Social Bond for the Return of the Censored” — Konturen “Femininity: From passion to an ethics of the impossible” — Topoi After Lacan: Clinical Practice and the Subject of the Unconscious — Willy Apollon, Danielle Bergeron, Lucie Cantin (SUNY Press 2002)References mentioned: “The Mirror Stage” — Lacan“Psychoanalysis Terminable and Interminable” — FreudGaga: Five Foot Two (2017)“The Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen” — Olympe de GougesHere Women Don't Dream — Rana AhmadFollow the Center for Psychoanalysis and Culture on FacebookRead Penumbr(a), a new journal of psychoanalysis and modernity: https://www.penumbrajournal.org/

Just a week removed from a very serious neck injury, Rage qb Jeff Brohm outgunned the Outlaws slinger Ryan Clement at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Brohm's numbers were impressive to say the least. 13 of 20 for 235 yards and two touchdowns as the boys from Orlando closed in, on clinching a playoff berth. Remaining as the only team that had not tasted defeat in the XFL, Orlando outscored Sin City 27-15 before almost 25,000 Raged fans. For three quarters it looked as if the mighty 6-0 Rage were going to take their first loss. Even though there were several lead changes, the guys from the desert seemed to have an answer for every move the Rage had. Early in the 4th quarter and with Orlando leading 14-12, Vegas found themselves with perhaps the best opportunity to steal a win away. An Orlando loss would negate the Rage their bonus check for the first time. Three times the Outlaws tried to cross into the promised land but failed. Orlando's defense showed why the Rage are still undefeated. A cheap-shot field goal by Outlaw Paul McCallum gave Vegas the lead for the last time. The crowd became a huge factor. The screams, chants, drum beats and claps all contributed as they were felt around the stadium. Fans were in a contagious delirious frenzy. Once the defense did their thing, Brohm and company came to do theirs. Seven minutes later, Kevin Swayne found the melon coming his way. A few seconds and 16 yards later, he scored, putting the homeboys ahead. Vegas still had a chance since there were still over 3 minutes remaining in the ball game. Orlando head coach Galen Hall did not flinched. He sent out the XFL's most opportunistic defense back on the field to seal the deal. Omar Brown and the rest of the guys did not fail their coach. The Outlaws began deep inside their own territory. with the clock running down, Clement fumbled the pigskin as he was getting fitted by Andre Pervis. Orlando's Sedric Clark took care of the rest as he delivered the goods to the end zone for the touchdown.
