American treasure Stevie Wonder urged senators to protect voting rights in a video released yesterday, and a newscaster in Guadalajara sounded off against anti-vaxxers in a fiery rant on live TV. In tonight's Pod Show exclusive, Stephen vents to Jon about covid anxieties and contagious pumas. Meanwhile… Stephen helps the ubiquitous earworm “Baby Shark” song celebrate a milestone, and helps our head writer Opus Moreschi answer a tricky question from his father. Then, “Succession” star and author of the new memoir, “Putting the Rabbit in the Hat,” Brian Cox joins Stephen for a two-part interview that kicks off with a look back at his parents, his childhood in Scotland, and the experiences that cemented his desire to become an entertainer. Next, our good friend Samantha Bee stops by to celebrate the 200th episode of her namesake TBS show, “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” and explain to Stephen what she means when she says this season will be “nut-nut.” Learn more about your ad choices. Hey hey, it’s the head writer for the “Late Show With Stephen Colbert” – Opus Moreschi! Opus discusses his work on the new season of MST3K, as well as being named for a cartoon penguin. Ryan and Erik from sister podcast “Junkmouth” drop by Greg’s apartment for a special recording session of the show (it’s not as creepy as it sounds). The Colorado-based podcast gang celebrates the Denver stop of the “MST3K Watch Out for Snakes Live Tour,” while Greg geeks out to getting a shout-out from none other than Joel Hodgson himself. Everyone lambastes the zither theme from classic film noir thriller, “The Third Man,” while Ryan seems a tad confused over the plot of “Spiderman: Homecoming.” Greg finally delivers on his homemade vanilla gelato, and makes the gang Sioux City Birch Beer floats. Plus, James and Ron tackle a double feature: "Progress Island" and "Assignment: Venezuela." All this, and a dark and gritty reboot of “New Zoo Review” that reimagines Henrietta Hippo and Charlie the Owl as avenging vigilantes, on this episode of the Revival League Podcast! (This podcast does not represent Alternaversal, Shout Factory or the Kickstarter campaign in any official capacity). EDITOR’S NOTE: In June 2019, this podcast merged with the Damn Dirty Geeks Podcast and became The Damn Dirty Drive-in. These are our classic back catalog episodes, dating back to March 2016. Please enjoy! The new Drive-In podcast opens for business with original sketches, movie discussions, interviews, weird food tastings and more at Episode 168.

Opus Moreschi is a classic Hollywood triple threat: a writer, performer and mammal. He also happens to be the head writer of The Colbert Report and a close personal friend of mine... as far as he knows. I've been promising a Colbert writer for a long time now and I'm happy to "report" that it is now a reality. Opus and I cover just about everything you'd ever want to know about writing for Stephen and writing for Jon and how they differ and how they're the same and what they have for breakfast... and we do it all in under an hour! It's a Hanukkah miracle!! Opus is a graduate of Emerson College (smart!) who has written and performed comedy at I.O. West and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (funny!). He's also a multiple Emmy Award winner - we talk about that a little as well.

The juggernaut of melancholy keeps rolling along, friends, on the latest live episode of Beginnings. A while ago, I had an idea to rip off the Nerdist Writers Panel and do the same kind of thing but with that patented Beginnings spin, and what a fun/sad time we had at UCB East earlier this month! (Sad in a good way though, folks! You know, that poignant, meaningful sadness, not the pitiful kind!) Annie Mebane from The Michael J. Fox Show/Community/Happy Endings joined us, as did J.R. Havlan of The Daily Show, and Jackson Publick, the co-creator of The Venture Bros. And Opus Moreschi, the head writer of The Colbert Report, sat in as my guest co-host. That show was frakking stacked! We chatted about 7th grade acid trips, a horrifying Wolverine/clown hybrid, Buddy Rich's drumstick, shitty underwear, divorce, a bloodsoaked sock and enjoyed a lot of uncomfortable sadness as well as a final moment of joy. It's time for a "juggernaut of melancholy" with the most horrific episode of Beginnings yet! Three minutes into this baby, I creep myself out, and the shame train kept right on going as my fantastic guests stand-ups Bonnie McFarlane and Max Silvestri, The Colbert Report's Eric Drysdale, Todd Goldstein of ARMS and guest co-host Mike Pace told tales of inappropriate adult/teen relations, and (maybe less creepily?) what it's like to grow up on a farm, Usenet Star Wars fans fanfic, the most criminally negligent camp counselors in history, Lobot's International House of Funk, building a museum in your house, a Don Rickles puppet, high school mail order bride screenplays, and a long conversation about audio tape brands.Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal, Ramesh Srivastava  of Voxtrot and more, and the next live episode will be September 3rd for the Beginnings "Writer's Panel" featuring Jackson Publick (The Venture Bros.), Annie Mebane (Community, The Michael J. Today marks the first episode of the newish format focusing more on my guests' childhoods, and I couldn't have asked for a better guest, the wonderful musician and writer Larry Livermore. Originally from Detroit, Larry began to get involved with the San Francisco punk scene in the late 1970s. After playing in a number of bands, he co-founded Lookout! Records in 1987 which was the home of numerous bands including Green Day, Op Ivy and Rancid. Larry's also written for Maximum Rocknroll, Punk Planet, and most recently Don Giovanni Records published his memoirs Spy Rock Memories.A few weeks ago, Larry stopped by my Harlem studio and we got in deep about childhood enemies, learning not to be a smart aleck, stories from WWII and The Depression, autos as status symbols, working class consciousness and being on the run from the FBI in late '60s NYC. Plus, in the epilogue, I learn about current day warzone-ish Detroit from my fiancee, stand-up Naomi Ekperigin.A big thanks, btw, to Matt Cohen and Eric Silver for their thoughts on how to further develop the show!Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal, Ramesh Srivastava  of Voxtrot and more, and the next live episode will be September 3rd for the Beginnings "Writer's Panel" featuring Annie Mebane (Community, The Michael J. On today's show, I talk to musician and producer Quentin Stoltzfus. From 1999 to about 2006, Quentin was the principal songwriter behind the amazing Philly psyche-pop band Mazarin. When a wedding band with the same name threatened a lawsuit, Quentin dropped the moniker and is now recording as Light Heat. With The Walkmen as the backing band, Light Heat's self-titled debut was just released at the end of June. And it's great!A few week's ago, Quentin and his publicist Mona came over to my Harlem apartment on a not-so-hot afternoon to chat about hating projects you've just spent a lot of time on, the incest taboo, leaving the Amish church, evangelical schooldays and early cynicism, a peripatetic childhood and pathological laziness. Also, in the epilogue, I interview my friend, Pittsburgh musician Corey Layman about what it was like to grow up as a Mennonite.Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal and more, and the next live episode will be September 3rd for the Beginnings "Writer's Panel" featuring guest co-host Opus Moreschi (head writer of Colbert Report) and more!

Opus Moreschi is a tall, pale son of Italy and an improviser, formerly a house performer at Improv Olympic West and currently at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York. He's also written for shows such as Lil' Bush and The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn. Opus is an inspiring figure, for his talent, of course, but especially for his determination. When it was announced that Stephen Colbert was getting his own show, Opus knew he immediately wanted to write for him. Five writing packets and a number of near misses later, he was hired on as a writer at The Colbert Report, where he currently spends his days on what is easily one of the best shows on TV. A few weeks ago Opus sat down with us at The Wrestling Team apartment to discuss divorce, improv, pyramid schemes, over-achieving at temp jobs, Edward G. Robinson impersonations, production by Andy Dick, writing political material and The Comedy Awards. We also debut a BRAND NEW comedy term that is sure to set the jargon community on fire!
