I'm at a TED event when Sarah Silverman takes the stage. She launches into her comedy set and as she gets going, I notice something interesting. A couple of jokes in, some people in the audience are already laughing hysterically. But others are fidgeting and looking uncomfortable with some of her content. My husband Mark turns to me and says, “Stand-up comedy is hard.” I agree and whisper back, “Yeah - that's why they invented Dad jokes. That's much easier - they're like training wheels for laughter.” Stand-up on the other hand is another league and I'd rather leave to the professionals - like my special guest today. Emily Walsh is a stand-up comedian who performs all over the world. And today on the Storytelling School Podcast, she shares how the worlds of comedy and story intertwine from her perspective. In this episode, you'll hear about approaches to comedy shows and being a different version of yourself on stage (even if just slightly), as well as hear answers to questions such as: How do you navigate the challenging waters of potentially offensive jokes to your audience? What role does story play in comedic content creation? How can you ease people into your jokes and get them comfortable with you as you tell your story? And what's the one thing you don't want to leave your audience with? What you will learn in this episode: What the first thing is that you must learn in any performance or presentation How to discover the kind of material that will work for your audience most of the time What you can do to re-engage a disengaged part of your audience Who is Emily? Emily Walsh is a comedian who performs nightly in bars and comedy clubs across New York City. Originally from Boston, Emily moved to New York City after college to pursue her dream of painting scenery for theatre, film and television. She still paints sometimes because comedy doesn't provide health insurance. Emily was recently featured on Kevin Hart's Lyft Comics on Peacock. Her festival credits include HBO's Women in Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, West End Festival in Atlanta, Boston Comedy Festival, the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin, and the Rogue Island Comedy Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. She also co-hosts the podcast Alone at Lunch, part of the Morbid podcast network on Wondery, and hosts and co-produces a monthly show at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn called Golden Ticket. VulgarGrad: VulgarGrad bring you the old songs of the Russian thieves, along with punk classics of the Perestroika era. The band arose in Melbourne in late 2004 out of a collaboration between some of Australia’s best musicians in underground ethnic styles and they combine elements to create their own inimitable sound, producing something that transcends the language barrier by aiming straight for your convict heritage and your dancing feet. Since that time, they have caused a sensation on Australia’s live music and festival scene, proving that what Australian audiences really seem to need is a wild night of old-fashioned Russian criminality. After all, if Russia and Australia have anything in common, it’s convicts. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 10th of July 2016. Dave Graney And The Coral Snakes: Dave Graney 'n' the Coral Snakes were THE stand alone act in Australia during the 90s. Nobody stood near them. They cut through with wit, flash and weirdness and flew their freak flag for four albums while Dave Graney used street slang and literate word bombs to fully state his case. For the first time since 1997, ARIA Award winning artist Dave Graney ‘n’ the Coral Snakes reformed last year to perform their much acclaimed album “Night of the Wolverine” (1993) as well as many other classics from their soft and sexy songbook featuring the original gangsters who made NIGHT OF THE WOLVERINE - Dave Graney on vocals with Clare Moore on drums, Rod Hayward on guitar and Robin Casinader on piano. The shows sold out across the country proving Dave Graney is still the "King of Pop". With Dave Graney & Clare Moore being tributed as "Living Legends" last year as part of Leaps & Bounds Festival and a documentary in the works, the band have decided to reform once more as part of this year's Leaps & Bounds Festival due to popular demand. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 6th of July 2016.

Recorded during the Out of Bounds Festival, this episode features two of Austin's finest, Ralph Hardesty and star of stage and screen Kerri Lendo. Kerri is not opposed to sending SWAT teams after hippies. Ralph shares his secret shame regarding Miley Cyrus. I suggest that a disgraced cop kill himself. VC Andrews makes a strong showing near the end. I think the heat got to us.

It's time for a "juggernaut of melancholy" with the most horrific episode of Beginnings yet! Three minutes into this baby, I creep myself out, and the shame train kept right on going as my fantastic guests stand-ups Bonnie McFarlane and Max Silvestri, The Colbert Report's Eric Drysdale, Todd Goldstein of ARMS and guest co-host Mike Pace told tales of inappropriate adult/teen relations, and (maybe less creepily?) what it's like to grow up on a farm, Usenet Star Wars fans fanfic, the most criminally negligent camp counselors in history, Lobot's International House of Funk, building a museum in your house, a Don Rickles puppet, high school mail order bride screenplays, and a long conversation about audio tape brands.Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal, Ramesh Srivastava  of Voxtrot and more, and the next live episode will be September 3rd for the Beginnings "Writer's Panel" featuring Jackson Publick (The Venture Bros.), Annie Mebane (Community, The Michael J. Today marks the first episode of the newish format focusing more on my guests' childhoods, and I couldn't have asked for a better guest, the wonderful musician and writer Larry Livermore. Originally from Detroit, Larry began to get involved with the San Francisco punk scene in the late 1970s. After playing in a number of bands, he co-founded Lookout! Records in 1987 which was the home of numerous bands including Green Day, Op Ivy and Rancid. Larry's also written for Maximum Rocknroll, Punk Planet, and most recently Don Giovanni Records published his memoirs Spy Rock Memories.A few weeks ago, Larry stopped by my Harlem studio and we got in deep about childhood enemies, learning not to be a smart aleck, stories from WWII and The Depression, autos as status symbols, working class consciousness and being on the run from the FBI in late '60s NYC. Plus, in the epilogue, I learn about current day warzone-ish Detroit from my fiancee, stand-up Naomi Ekperigin.A big thanks, btw, to Matt Cohen and Eric Silver for their thoughts on how to further develop the show!Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal, Ramesh Srivastava  of Voxtrot and more, and the next live episode will be September 3rd for the Beginnings "Writer's Panel" featuring Annie Mebane (Community, The Michael J. On today's show, I talk to musician and producer Quentin Stoltzfus. From 1999 to about 2006, Quentin was the principal songwriter behind the amazing Philly psyche-pop band Mazarin. When a wedding band with the same name threatened a lawsuit, Quentin dropped the moniker and is now recording as Light Heat. With The Walkmen as the backing band, Light Heat's self-titled debut was just released at the end of June. And it's great!A few week's ago, Quentin and his publicist Mona came over to my Harlem apartment on a not-so-hot afternoon to chat about hating projects you've just spent a lot of time on, the incest taboo, leaving the Amish church, evangelical schooldays and early cynicism, a peripatetic childhood and pathological laziness. Also, in the epilogue, I interview my friend, Pittsburgh musician Corey Layman about what it was like to grow up as a Mennonite.Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal and more, and the next live episode will be September 3rd for the Beginnings "Writer's Panel" featuring guest co-host Opus Moreschi (head writer of Colbert Report) and more!
