GO TEAM VENTURE! We are back for our second installment in our Capes 'N Cowards season. This season is a celebration of stories where unlikely characters have to rise to the occasion of herohood. In that vein, today we are taking a look at The Venture Bros.! We watched the first two seasons of the Adult Swim cartoon to see who may want to check this one out. The Venture Bros. is an adult animated television co-created by Chris McCulloch aka Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer that aired on Adult Swim for 7 seasons. The duo ran the show with their unique vision and inspirations that are clear throughout the entire series. The show follows Dr. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture, his bodyguard/father-figure/secret agent Brock Samson, and Dr. Venture's two teenage fraternal twin sons Dean and Hank Venture. Through the series they get into all sorts of satirical pulp adventures with heavy emphasis on science fiction, superheroes, and other things that influenced the show. Jordan joins Dan once again to talk about a show he has wanted to cover forever. Jordan reveals his origins with the series which are very similar to those we have heard in the Evil Dead episode from GateSlashers 2. Dan talks about his only experience with the show before this episode and how it includes electronic cigarettes and New York City Comic Con.

Stay tuned to the end of this one, because you won't want to miss the announcement we have for you! We find ourselves in a Freaky Friday situation as Jack takes over the 2nd Unit to share a decade-and-a-half long obsession of his: Richard Williams' animated passion project, The Thief and The Cobbler! Never truly finished by Williams and released in a variety of cuts from different companies, this is a must-listen story for anyone even remotely interested in animation (and a heartbreakingly cathartic story for anyone with creative anxiety). Join us for the tale of arguably the longest production cycle in history (sorry, Mad God), the ways people like the Weinsteins absolutely ruin films, and the heights of achievement and acclaim you can reach (and what they can cost). Our boys have grown up so much! And that's just us going off on a longer-than-expected tear about the Venture Brothers when we thought we had the measure of them. Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer saw that coming though, proceeding to sweep aside sizeable swathes of their world of aimless adventurers and vacuous villains to allow something new to grow. It was a tough row to hoe for both the creators and the fans incensed at the change, but did all their hard work pay off? Teenage rebellion, the sins of the fathers and a catchy hit single underscore an immense inventory of a turbulent time, still keeping a little space for a Post-Podcast Repaste of course.Listen up!

Arch-villain Brian Smith is unleashed to cast a wiser eye upon the awkward transitionary phase of the Adult Swim darling in our second retrospective chunk, comprising series 2 and 3. While we get a better sense of the cartoon it would become, and the ambitions of Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer for it beyond an outlet for coarse humour, The Venture Brothers still had a lot of growing up to do. The good news is you get a whole lot more: more dumb-voiced duos! More genuine pathos! Ever more oblique cultural references! And more to come way down the line with the prospect of a movie to cap off the whole lot. It's bigger, it's louder, and it's got an appetite for a Post-Podcast Repaste to match!Listen up!

On the fourth episode of the Post-Punk Podcast, our Editor-in-Chief Alex Baker catches up with his old friend Doc Hammer following the release of his band Weep's recent album Too Much Nothing. You may know Doc Hammer as Dr. Girlfriend on the Venture Bros, an animated program that was on cartoon network's Adult Swim, that he co-created along with Jackson Publick. But before Doc was known as Eric Hammer, a baroque, flamboyant, Dracula-looking, and often shirtless, Gothic Rock guitarist from the bands Requiem in White, and Mors Syphilitica. During the interview, Doc discusses exactly what Goth is, as well as talking about Bauhaus, The Damned, Sisters of Mercy, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. As well as his acquisition of guitar that if you were to open a museum of post-punk, it would be the highlight of the collection. Dreamed up by the even more peculiar pairing of Jackson Publick & Doc Hammer it proved an ostentatious outpouring of their influences and enthusiasms that set the show apart from its stablemates at Adult Swim. Our multi-stage journey begins here in the murk of the first series and its preceding pilot, wherein we may discover the Venture Brothers' not-so-secret origins and glimpse their potential for growth beyond arbitrary late-night television weirdness. They get into the obsessive level of detail, love letters to pop culture, surprising amount of heart, brilliant musical score, and questionable creative choices that have made The Venture Bros. stand out among Adult Swim's line up of talking fast food and late night stoner favorites.

We've finally reached our first Adult Swim series on What A Cartoon, and it's their longest-running one to date: The Venture Bros.! Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer's creation launched as a Johnny Quest spoof in 2004, but over the years, it's grown into something much more ambitious that somehow survived despite near-cancellations and years-long delays between seasons. This week's episode comes via the request of our VERY generous patron David Whittington, who joins the show to steer us through one of The Venture Bros.' earlier gems: Escape to the House of Mummies Part II.

Show creator McCulloch was one of the main writers for the Saturday morning animated series The Tick. He created The Venture Bros. storyline sometime prior to 2000. After working for the television program Sheep in the Big City and the live-action version of The Tick, McCulloch set to turning The Venture Bros. into an animated series. The Venture Bros. was originally conceived as a comic book story for an issue of Monkeysuit. McCulloch realized that his notes were too extensive for a short comics story and proposed that Comedy Central air The Venture Bros. as an animated series, but the network rejected it. Although the first draft of the pilot script was written in the spring of 2000, the premise was not greenlit until around the summer of 2002 by Adult Swim. McCulloch had not previously considered Cartoon Network because he "didn't want to tone The Venture Bros. down," and was unaware of the existence of the network's late night adult-oriented programming block, Adult Swim. With the revised pilot, production began in autumn of that year, and the pilot was first run on February 16, 2003. The first season of the series was completed and premiered in 2004, and it was added to the summer schedule in August.

A special surprise visit by Mike Norton occurs during the interview and a possible future collaboration is made. Sunday was a bit tamer, so I sat with the lovely CNI girls and booth helpers, Carrie Tucker, Kristin Garay and Colleen McAllister, to get their thoughts on the show. Also, Jimmy has a dream interview with the amazingly beautiful and talented Molly Crabapple. What about the other interviews you ask? Well, tune in this Saturday, April 26th, for a special CNI One-Shot: The Venture Bros. That's right! Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer, the creators of the acclaimed animated series The Venture Bros., joined us to discuss the upcoming season 3. Also, James Urbaniak (voice of Dr. Venture and Phantom Limb) stops by to discuss his work on the show as well. Tune in next week for more interviews from Greg Pak (Incredible Herc), Stephen Lindsay and Lauren Monardo (Jesus Hates Zombies) and The Vampire Cowboys Theater Company.

McCulloch had not previously considered Cartoon Network because he "didn't want to tone The Venture Bros. down," and was unaware of the existence of the network's late night adult- oriented programming block, Adult Swim. With the revised pilot, production began in autumn of that year, and the pilot was first run on February 16, 2003. The first season of the series was completed and premiered in 2004, and it was added to the summer schedule in August.
