The Trap Set is back, and so is Marnie Stern. Marnie burst onto the NYC rock scene in 2007--seemingly out of nowhere--with a unique blend of virtuosic guitar; surreal, beautifully yearning lyrcs; and a "sheets of sound" vocal delivery. Joe met Marnie in 2012 and toured with her behind Stern's 2013 album, The Chronicles of Marnia. It was on this tour that Joe conceived of the idea for The Trap Set. Shortly after the tour, Stern took a break from releasing original music and took a gig as the guitarist for the 8G Band--the house band for Late Night with Seth Meyers--a position she held for over eight years. Now back with a fantastic new album, The Comeback Kid, Marnie joins her old pal, Joe, to catch up!
Legendary guitarist Marnie Stern joins Melissa and Courtney to talk about a guy who ghosted and left her heartbroken for years. Then, they chat about discovering new artists back then versus now, being a mom while touring, and after 10 years, releasing her first LP The Comeback Kid.

Natalia Wotjowicz has written an excellent book called Wargaming Experiences about approaches to professional wargame design informed by her experience with the NATO Civil-Military Cooperation Center of Excellence. Her book offers a lot of guidance relevant to both historical games and wargames, so I invited her to discuss it along with differences between professional and commercial design. Guitar virtuoso Marnie Stern comes roaring back with her first album in 10 years, and the good news is, she still shreds. We discuss "The Comeback Kid" on episode #200 of "For the Record." For all the past episodes, visit ForTheRecordPodcast.com.
Stephanie Land's 2019 memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother's Will to Survive was a visceral portrait of living in poverty as a single mom, cleaning houses. It was a bestseller and later adapted into a critically acclaimed Netflix series. Now Land has a new book, Class, about her experience juggling college, motherhood, and work. During that time she experienced food insecurity, and struggled to get government assistance. "I see such a lack of empathy toward people who live in the margins of society," she tells Tonya Mosley. Also, rock critic Ken Tucker reviews the new album from guitarist Marnie Stern, and David Bianculli reviews the latest season of Fargo.

In this chat, we get to meet Marnie Stern. Marnie is a singer, songwriter, and electric guitar wizard, who's back after more than a decade-long absence with her fifth record, The Comeback Kid. In this chat, she and I talk a lot about this new album - the songwriting, the production - and what it felt like to get back into her specific style and groove after so long out of the studio. We also discuss what she was up to in the interim, which included having two children and also playing in the house band on Seth Meyers. So needless to say - she's been busy in between albums. But now she's back! And she's ready to melt you. We also talk drumming's importance to her work, the fading glory of blogging, and that one time she ripped the sleeve of a record I bought from her at a show (it's cool). Thank you for listening.
On today's episode, I talk to musician Marnie Stern. Originally from New York City, Marnie didn't start out trying to pursue music professionally, and her first album In Advance of the Broken Arm came out in 2007 on Kill Rock Stars when she was 30-years-old. It instantly garnered acclaim, and was followed by This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That in 2008, a self-titled album two years later and The Chronicles of Marnia in 2013. The previous year, she made Spin Magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time", and after Seth Meyers took over Late Night, Marnie eventually joined the 8G Band for a number of years. Most recently, Marnie has recorded her first album in ten years; The Comeback Kid is out now on Joyful Noise, and it's fantastic! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. Check out my free philosophy Substack where I write essays every couple months here and my old casiopop band's lost album here! Incoming transmission from Joe Wong. He's an incredibly busy guy: he hosts the Trap Set, a weekly interview podcast he’s helmed since 2015, where he sits down with artists like Mix Master Mike, Sharon Van Etten, Jim Keltner, Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo, among many others. He also makes music for film in TV—you’ve probably heard his work on Master of None, Russian Doll, Awkwafina is Nora From Queens, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Midnight Gospel. Joe has long played music with artists like Mary Timony of Helium and Marnie Stern, but recently, he released his debut solo long player, Nite Creatures. Produced by Timony, who also plays on it, it finds him joined by members of Flaming Lips, War on Drugs, and that dog. for a set of deeply cinematic psychedelic pop, which brings to mind the mystical lushness of Scott Walker, the Zombies, and Pink Floyd. One of the albums best songs “Dreams Wash Away” was featured in Duncan Trussel’s Midnight Gospel finale on Netflix—one of the most affecting things you’ll see all year, and like that episode, Nite Creatures grapples with mortality and existential dread, but remains vivid, colorful, and beautiful.

Joe Wong is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, and podcaster based in Los Angeles, Ca. He is currently the host of The Trap Set, a weekly podcast and radio show about the lives of musicians. As a drummer he is known for his work with Parts & Labor, Marnie Stern, Aa, Man Forever, and Mary Timony. Wong was also chosen to participate in the Boredoms' event 88 Boadrum. Wong's drumming style has been described as "trancelike", "propulsive", and "explosive". As a composer he has worked on projects that include the hit Netflix series Russian Doll and Master of None; the Sundance Special Jury Prize winning feature, The Pool; documentaries such as Collapse, The Yes Men, and Independent Lens; the hit young adult film To All the Boys I've Loved Before; and avant-garde work such as Adult Swim's Superjail! and the 2014 film Hamlet A.D.D.. Wong's scoring projects have garnered praise from the New York Times, Time, and The A.V. Club. (bio taken from Wikipedia) In this episode JC chats with Joe about his new album, Nite Creatures (out Sept. 18, 2020) on Decca Records, working with film directors, and where the music industry is headed.

Marnie Stern is an obscenely talented musician. That's probably something we should mention from the get go. Her guitar playing and songwriting nous is remarkable, and the result of her skill is four very good albums, most of which could be considered for out discography. However, Mark makes a case for her third self titled album as being the one which should be added to our canon of classic albums. Weaver enthusiastically agrees, whilst Chris gives some thoughts on why her second and fourth albums might be more worthy additions to the Unsung Discography of Classic Records than this. What do you think? Is Marnie Stern's self titled third album her definitive work, or do you think perhaps another record of hers should be considered? Vote on our Facebook page below.
