In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy, Jamie and Stu look back at week 1 of IPL 2025 through a stock market lens. Who are we buying? Who are we selling? And what are we watching with our fingers poised ready to pounce in the coming weeks? We start on a positive note, highlighting a balanced RCB side unbeaten at the time of recording thanks to a bowling attack featuring the quality of Josh Hazlewood and a top order that's firing thanks to Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, Rajit Patidar and co. In the Buy section of the show there's also praise for Sai Sudharsan, MS Dhoni and wicketkeepers in general. We're watching the impact player performances and how that's impacting games and batting lineups. We're selling a star-studded Mumbai Indians batting lineup featuring Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and friends because we can't understand why they're continuing to struggle, and watching closely to see how much tinkering do with their teamsheet, tactics and batting lineup with the likes of Curran, Dhoni, Jadeja and Ashwin who could all slide up and down the middle order. To round out the show, there's chat about whether teams will score 300, how home ground advantage could play a role and if it is too early to be worried about Pat Cummins and his SRH bowling attack. We'll be back in your feed later in the week with more of a game review style show. Ahead of the elections, Gujarat is seeing fierce campaigning by the political parties. Along with the fierce campaigning by the BJP and Congress, AAP is also making in to the headlines with its fierce engagement. What has been interesting is the political trajectory of three candidates who are all well known to the mass- Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakor and Jignesh Mevani Patel became famous with his Patidar agitations. After a brief tenure with the Congress, he joined the BJP. Mevani, a Dalit scholar, is running on the Congress ticket. Lastly, Thakor was the founder of the was the OBC-ST-SC Ekta Manch. Patel, a headstrong leader of the Patidar reservation, had referred to Prime Minister Modi as a “publicity minister.” His attacks against the BJP used to be constant and aggressive. Patel took a U-turn when unhappy with the Congress, he joined the BJP in June this year. After making alliance with the party, Patel has said that the Centre has helped the community with its 10% reservation for the EWS. He has also praised the government for its decision on scrapping Article 370, construction of the Ramjanmanhoomi temple. Thakor, who led the OBC agitation, won the 2017 elections with the Congress ticket. He joined the BJP in 2019. Ever since, Thakoor has praised the BJP for its groundwork and being in touch with all the party workers. On being asked about his decision to quit the Congress, Thakor has blamed the Congress's structure. Mevani, who started as an independent candidate, is now the face of the Congress, has said that the Congress is way better placed this time than the last time. He has added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi no longer appeals the people of Gujarat. In this podcast, we decode the career trajectory of the three leaders. Gujarat is all decked up to go to polls. The elections will be held in two phases from December 1 to 5. The home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat, has been a political stronghold for the BJP for a very long time. The 2017 elections saw the BJP win 49.1% of the votes, with the Congress winning 41.4% votes. 2017 was the time when issues such as demonetization, GST and Patidar reservations dominated the polls. This year, poll issues are different. The rising price is one of the issues that's affecting the mass. This year is also the time when the AAP has been campaigning aggressively for the Gujarat elections. AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has said that Gujarat is headed towards a “cyclone of change”. Will AAP win a significant position in the Gujarat elections? Amid the Bharat Jodo Yatra, how will the Congress perform? Will the BJP continue to play a dominating role in Gujarat? What are the poll issues this year? In this podcast, we talk to Poornima Joshi, who recently visited Gujarat. Poornima helps analyze the play of power in Gujarat politics; she talks about factors that would dominate the election and the aggressive campaigning done by parties for the election. FYI. 948: How Can Hardik Patel & Sunil Jakhar's Exit Impact The Congress?

The Big Story

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2022 21:33

On 18 May, Hardik Patel who gained popularity during the Patidar agitation, quit the party. Taking swipes at senior leaders, he accused the party of lacking strong leadership both at the state and central levels. He said that Congress only plays the role of a “roadblock” when it comes to serious issues — be it about Ram Mandir, abrogation of Article 370 or GST. While it's not yet clear where Hardik will be headed next, resignations within the Congress party have been on the rise. There have been brazen expressions of discontentment over party leadership and the party's functioning from Congress leaders themselves.  Besides Hardik, many prominent and senior leaders – some of whom had decades-long association with the Congress – quit the party and switched over to opposition parties over the last few year. In fact, earlier in the day a former senior leader of Congress from Punjab — Sunil Jakhar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, merely days after quitting Congress. But what doesn't make for good optics is that Hardik's resignation comes just days after the Congress wrapped up their 3-day 'Chintan Shivir' in Udaipur, where the party got together to chart out a plan for its revival. Jakhar, in fact, resigned while the Shivir was still underway. So, we'll look at two things in this episode: firstly, how does Hardik Patel and Sunil Jakhar's exit stand to impact the Congress at a time when its fast losing its grip over its voters? Secondly, what are the big takeaways from the Chintan Shivir? Is the Congress acknowledging the shortcomings that has been costing it so dearly? The meeting was held to give a final shape to its strategy for the 2019 General Elections. * Patidar leader Hardik Patel, who shot to fame by spearheading a quota stir in Gujarat also attended the meeting formally joined the Congress in CWC meeting.  * If the Congress did visited Sabarmati Ashram for the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March in 1930, PM Modi wrote a blog attacking the Congress. Want to find a way to automatically donate money to charity without affecting the rest of your budget? Check out my interview with Coin Up founder & CEO Leena Patidar all about how you can make big change with your spare change. Long description: The other week, a member of my Facebook group asked how people automate (or try to automate) their charitable giving. Well, talk about good timing because for my latest podcast interview I have Leena Patidar on the show, and she’s the founder and CEO of Coin Up. It’s literally an app to help you automatically give money to charity without you having to put much effort in, but still giving you those handy charitable tax receipts and making you feel like you’re doing some good in the world! As you’ll find out in the interview, Leena is a serial entrepreneur with a killer resume. She could honestly have continued her career and become a very successful and high paid CEO if she wanted to, but giving back was always something that she was passionate about. So, she eventually developed Coin Up, the merging of her passion for giving back to those in need and her entrepreneurial skills. When I heard about Coin Up and Leena’s story, I was so excited to have her on the show. Giving back and donating to charity are often overlooked when talking about the elements of personal finance, but giving back really should be a line item in your budget. You don’t have to donate a lot either. Although many people follow the tradition of donating 10% of their income to charity, I’ve always believed that you should just give whatever you can afford. It can be $50/month, or $5/month. Giving anything is better than not giving anything at all, so I challenge you to take a look at what charities are out there that speak to you, and make room in your budget to donate a sum to help them with their services. How Does Coin Up Work? You’ve probably heard of apps that help you add small additional amounts of money onto your debt or into your investments? Usually how those apps work is every time you make a purchase with your credit or debit card, a percentage of that amount you spent will also be taken out of your savings or chequing account and put onto your debt or investments. It’s basically a way to automatically accelerate your financial goals without you really noticing. That’s similar to how Coin Up works too. When you sign up with Coin Up, it will round up your everyday credit or debit card transactions and will donate that spare change to your selected charity every month. For more info on how to set it up, check out Coin Up’s FAQs. Who Can Use Coin Up? Currently the app it’s only available in the U.S., but Leena mentions in the episode that they hope it will be available in other countries like Canada very soon. How Do I Download Coin Up? You can either download the app from Apple’s app store, or you can sign up on their website. Right now, the app isn’t available for Android. The odds are that if you don’t figure in an administration’s records, you won’t figure in the historical record. But what do you do to get into those records? Raising a ruckus is one way. But that works only if someone else hasn’t managed to raise more of a ruckus than you can ever hope to – and this, as Vinayak Chaturvedi tells us in Peasant Pasts: History and Memory in Western India (University of California Press, 2007) was exactly the situation the peasants of Gujarat faced during the last century of British rule in India. The Dharala peasants lived and worked in the Kheda district, the stomping ground of the powerful Patidar community, who formed a support base for Mahatma Gandhi’s satyagraha campaigns. The Mahatma’s nationalism did not, however, attract the Dharalas, given that the Patidars had co-opted it for themselves. The Dharalas felt they stood nothing to gain by joining forces with groups that locally exercised economic power over them.
