This week, it's an all-Newslaundry panel as Akanksha Kumar is joined by Basant Kumar and Ayush Tiwari. Basant kicks off the podcast by talking about the ongoing election season in Gujarat, the ground realities of the Gujarat model, unemployment, Narendra Modi's image, and unkept promises such as those surrounding the sugar mill in Kodinar. He explains how the closing down of one mill has compelled farmers to grow less profitable crops as compared to sugarcane. Ayush then details how the Yogi Adityanath government gave Republic TV a plot in Noida for a new studio, and how this land was leased during the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, on a day Arnab Goswami interviewed the chief minister in Ayodhya. He says the deal is not illegal but raises questions. This and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn't, and what shouldn't have. This week, host Nidhi Suresh is joined by Ayush Tiwari and Sidharth Singh of Newslaundry. In February 2021, the I&B ministry's Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity presented, in the parliament, data on the Narendra Modi government's ad spending. It shows that Republic TV and Times Now, the most watched English news TV channels in the country, got fewer ads than NewsX, India Today, and BTVI. This data doesn't match the numbers the government had previously released under the Right to Information Act, however, nor with those maintained by the channels themselves. Ayush discusses his report on this discrepancy.Nidhi asks Ayush why he thinks the Modi government is hesitant revealing its actual expenditure? Ayush has no answer to why but says, “The fact that they gave numbers that didn't reflect the actual expenditure raises several questions because, at the end of the day, this is money collected from taxpayers.” Ayush adds that the ministry is conveniently blaming news channels for whatever discrepancies there might be in how it is calculating spending.Sidharth talks about his report on gender representation in Indian newsrooms. Two years ago, Newslaundry published a report in partnership with UN Women, Gender Inequality in India Media, which found that women held barely five percent of newsroom leadership positions. According to preliminary findings from Gender Inequality in Indian Media 2021, the numbers have not really changed for 2019-20.Comparing the two reports, Sidharth says, “Unfortunately, we aren't really seeing great leaps and strides as far as gender representation is concerned.” Ayush weighs in by talking about gender representation in Newslaundry compared to other news major organisations. This and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn't, and what shouldn't have.Tune in. Afghanistan has called on India to engage with the Taliban once American troops return home. The signals became public just one day after the US vacated its biggest airbase near Kabul in a step towards ending its 20-year occupation of the war-wrecked nation. The Pentagon has said the withdrawal of US forces will be completed ahead of the original deadline of September. “A safe, orderly drawdown enables us to maintain an ongoing diplomatic presence, support the Afghan people and the government, and prevent Afghanistan from once again becoming a safe haven for terrorists that threatens our homeland,” Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said. And as the new deadline neared, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke of an “aroma of relationship” while Afghan President Ashraf Ghani urged Delhi to reach out to the “nationalist” Taliban. “India can play a very constructive role here,” said Farid Mamundzay, President Ghani's top diplomat in Delhi as the Taliban overran one Afghan district after another in blistering attacks which have continued since the US military pullout started. Ambassador Mamundzay told Republic TV that India should use its regional clout to persuade the “Taliban to let go of violence and talk to Afghan people in a way where we would reach a dignified and lasting peace.” The resilient Taliban action is reminiscent of Mujahedeen-led attacks during the 1989 Soviet military pullout, which led to political turmoil followed by civil war that lasted until the US attempted to counter the Taliban regime in November 2001. Analysts such as Harsh Pant of Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation says US President Joe Biden's government has acknowledged India as a potential peace-maker in Afghanistan. “India's role is certainly going to be very important in going forward, as demonstrated by the fact that the Biden administration brought India back into the peace process earlier this year,” analyst Pant told public broadcaster RSTV. India takes Taliban to the UN India, which has close and friendly ties with Afghanistan, told the United Nations Security Council late last month that violence must end for the peace talks to begin. “For enduring peace in Afghanistan, terrorist safe havens and sanctuaries must be dismantled immediately and terrorist supply chains disrupted,” Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said. Some South Asian diplomats also accuse Pakistan of backing the Taliban Islamic militia in order to blunt arch-rival India's growing influence with President Ghani's administration in war-torn Afghanistan. “Pakistan beyond doubt is helping the Taliban in every possible manner including arming it to the teeth and so the solution to the problem really lies in controlling Pakistan and this is something the international community has to do,” added Prabhu Dayal, a former Indian ambassador to Islamabad. Pakistan targets India But Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has rejected the accusations, asking questions about the presence of Indian nationals in Afghanistan. “At times we feel that their presence is perhaps larger than it ought to be because they do not share a border with you,” Qureshi told Afghan media group TOLOnews in an interview on the stuttering Afghan peace process. But the sideshow aside, Pakistan is under pressure to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table. India, which has spent hundreds of millions of euros in infrastructure projects, recently issued a 13-point security advisory for Indians deployed in that country. “We're concerned by the violence there based on which we have issued an advisory,” foreign ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi told a news conference.

In this episode, the host Snigdha Sharma is joined by Newslaundry's Ayush Tiwari to discuss the television ratings scam and the WhatsApp chats between Republic TV's editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and Partho Dasgupta, the former CEO of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC).Ayush begins by pointing out that the chats revealed something that everyone already suspected—that behind all the nationalistic clamour on Indian television news, there is nothing but a network of opportunists and middle men who line their pockets and buy influence.Through the length of the discussion, Ayush cites his recent media reports and goes on to highlight how BARC, a government-mandated body, has been compromised at different levels. From Republic TV and Zee reaching millions of viewers illegally to a former minister in the information and broadcasting ministry allegedly “keeping aside” a multi-crore complaint against Republic TV, Ayush explains just how deep-rooted the corruption is. Actress Kangana Ranaut has condemned the arrest of Republic TV's Editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and has called out the Maharashtra Government.
First, Mohamed Thaver talks about why Republic TV owner and editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami has been arrested, the question it raises, and discusses the other cases he is involved in. Next, Astha Saxena explains why Delhi is seeing a sharp rise in cases and the kind of strain it is putting on the city’s health infrastructure (13:02). And in the end, a quick look at the letter from the Department of Military Affairs that has proposed a drastic cut in pension for officers seeking premature retirement from service and an increase in retirement age (20:32). Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami is making headlines again — from being accused of manipulating TRP channels just last month, the allegation now is of abetment of suicide for which he has been taken under arrest and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. But not without some high drama. In an unexpected development, the Raigad police along with the Mumbai police arrived at Goswami's Worli residence to arrest him on Wednesday morning. But the police teams faced what they called 'extreme resistance' from arrest by Goswami along with a volley of questions — all of which was captured on a now viral video. Once arrested, the TV anchor was taken to Alibaug, about 100 kms from Mumbai, where the abetment of suicide case against him was registered. The case relates to the suicide by 53-year-old interior designer Anvay Naik in 2018. The architect and his mother committed suicide over alleged non-payment of dues by Republic TV. As some journalists spoke out to condemn this act, irrespective of their differences with Goswami's brand of journalism, this arrest turned into a political row between the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress government in Maharashtra and the BJP-led Centre. But what is this old case about? Why has it re-surfaced now? As we talk about all that, let's also look at how the state of the fourth pillar of democracy has been under attack since the past few years.Producer and Host: Shorbori Purkayastha Editor: Shelly Walia Music: Big Bang FuzzListen to The Big Story podcast on: Apple: https://apple.co/2AYdLIl Saavn: http://bit.ly/2oix78C Google Podcasts: http://bit.ly/2ntMV7S Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2IyLAUQ Deezer: http://bit.ly/2Vrf5Ng
Republic TV owner Arnab Goswami was arrested by the Maharashtra Police in a 2018 alleged abetment to suicide case. How this case, unlike the previous ones against him, is not a directly linked to his journalism. Why this is a State vs Centre, Shiv Sena-BJP fight, and whether Arnab is a victim or a perpetrator, a crusader or willing political pawn, would depend on your political view. First nine months of the year Arnab Goswami spent witch-hunting political opponents of the Govt, the minority community & Bollywood stars. In the last three, Mumbai police seems to be extending the same courtesy to him! The Battle between Arnab Goswami and Mumbai Police Commissioner Parim Bir Singh has been dubbed as ‘unprecedented'; and while it does appear that Mumbai Police is going after Republic - all guns blazing - it is not something that should surprise folks are Republic TV who have honed the skill of witch hunting to a fine art. Here are some of the instances where Republic sacrificed journalism to the fire and chose the popular medieval form of witch hunt to garner more views and money. In the context of television in India, three letters – TRP – has gained a rather dubious reputation over the years. Television Rating Points or TRP was often synonymous with a compromise in the quality of television content. However, since Mumbai Police's press conference which named Republic TV as having tampered with TRP measurement system, the news has touched a raw nerve among the news channels. As the nation wanted to know what exactly the whole controversy was, primetime debates across channels had a variety of answers - a “scam”, “scandal”, “dhokha”, “cheating”, “saazish”, “fraud”, “racket”, “chori” and “vishwaasghaat”. However, while Republic TV's CFO S Sundaram skipped a summon by the police on Saturday citing a pending petition before the Supreme Court, news channels have framed this as an issue of one bad apple ruining the basket, media veterans explain why it is a much deeper issue pertaining to the entire news industry with political, social and economic implications.

Venu, founding editor of The Wire to discuss the recession, the state of the media, and everything that happened this week. The panel discusses and debates the possible paths of India’s economic recovery, whether the government’s approach to the lockdown made things worse, and why India has experienced greater negative impacts due to the coronavirus than other global economic powerhouses. In this interview, former Republic TV journalist Tejinder Singh Sodhi sits down with Newslaundry’s Manisha Pande to discuss the events surrounding his resignation letter, which has now become viral on social media. Tejinder Sodhi has been a journalist for about 18 years and prior to joining Republic TV he had worked for organisations like PTI, Hindustan Times and The Tribune. He is also the only Indian civilian to have studied at the US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth. On the reasons prompting his resignation from Republic TV on 5th August, Sodhi recounts how the organisation has no concept of exit interviews. The company is least concerned about the reasons surrounding anyone’s resignation from the organisation which is why he made it a point to write a separate note outlining his reasons aside from his resignation letter that he sent almost a month later. He says that while there were several reasons for his leaving, the fact that the staff was treated terribly was one of the most prominent reasons. He also cites instances where for a story he was made to compromise his ethics and resort to tactics like protesting with placards outside party offices. With regards to the Sunanda Pushkar case, he recalls how one of his colleagues was under so much pressure for an exclusive story that he suffered a heart attack while in office. Similar events surrounded another resignation from a reporter who was unable to get Rhea Chakroborty’s interview for the channel. On the subject of his time at Republic TV, Sodhi recalls how the channel while campaigning against nepotism also actively supported it. An interview that had previously been granted to Mr. Sodhi was reassigned to a close crony of Arnab Goswami which is what triggered his resignation. He also recalls how reporters were constantly asked to focus on a particular angle while reporting their stories which was centred around bashing a particular political party. With respect to the reporters mandate at Republic, Sodhi says that while he was never explicitly asked to not do a story on the BJP, the manner in which the stories were given prominence via the Mumbai desk made the bias very obvious. Since he headed the Jammu office for Republic, Sodhi recalls how while reporting about Mufti or Abdullah the channel would always focus on the one comment in their speeches that could be utilised to call them anti national and focussed all their energy on that.Watch. In this episode of NL Hafta, Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Mehraj D Lone, and Anand Vardhan of Newslaundry are joined by journalist Faye D’souzaThey discuss the issue of Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah being slapped with the Public Safety Act. Mehraj gives the historical context of the draconian law and what its application entails. Faye says laws like the PSA are emergency laws and "we are obviously no longer in an emergency". “If you join all of these dots, the suggestion that because people are making statements in your opposition you’re going to keep them in detention is actually very worrying for a democracy,” she adds.Abhinandan expresses his concern over Prime Minister Narendra Modi using a quote from a satirical website to denounce Abdullah. "When the PM says something that's a headline on a satire website, it shows the level of politics we have gone into now,” he remarks.Faye points out that the government has not provided any evidence that the Kashmiri leaders intended to incite violence. Even if they wanted to mobilise people to protest in case they were released, it would be their democratic right. Abhinandan then discusses comedian Kunal Kamra’s ambush of Republic TV boss Arnab Goswami with Prateek Goyal, Newslaundry's correspondent based in Pune. Prateek argues that by tweeting a mildly abusive rant against Goswami, Kamra did what he accuses Goswami of. Abhinandan, on the other hand, sticks to his argument that people in positions of power need to be held accountable for their conduct.Anand adds to the discussion saying one should stick to more formal language in such instances, especially in public. “The language of his heckling, in my view, was in poor taste," he says, referring to Kamra. Faye chimes in, “Apart from the legal aspect, there’s the ethical grey that our country seems to have discarded.” Manisha says people need to file civil defamation suits against mediapersons who daily demonise them. “If you are going to keep saying something that puts lives in jeopardy, it’s no joke anymore,” she says. “And you can't keep appealing to their good sense.” Moving on to the next big news, Manisha expresses sadness that the Delhi election discourse does not include pollution as a major issue. On the TV coverage of the election, she says, “I don't think anywhere in the world it is possible for people – and blame for this is on the media – to be so careless about something so important.” The panellists also discuss Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's singing of Hanuman Chalisa. Faye articulates her displeasure at the fact that it was a journalist who asked Kejriwal to recite the prayer. “The credibility of that news network and the journalist went completely down the drain,” she says. In the context of the Aam Aadmi Party's campaign rhetoric, Mehraj argues, "If you’re competing for the hardcore Hindu vote with the BJP, you are not going to get that. Because the BJP has a monopoly on that.”Reflecting the panel's collective displeasure at the Delhi election discourse, Anand opines, “Speaking from a distance of approximately a thousand kilometres in Bihar, I think the election’s coverage has been quite disproportionate to its importance in national politics.” The panellists also talk about how religion has long played a role in India’s electoral politics, the Shiv Sena's shifting ideological positions, and much more.Tune in! In this episode of NL Hafta, Manisha Pande, Raman Kirpal, Mehraj D Lone and Madhu Trehan are joined by Vivek Kaul, an author who’s been writing a series on the Union Budget for Newslaundry.Vivek starts the conversation with the 2020 Budget and the Economic Survey. “What used to be a remarkably esoteric document suddenly became very readable,” he says. Vivek says the invariable economic slowdown India is witnessing is a result of a lack of investments. He speculates that the reason for this might be the fact that it’s incredibly hard to carry out any economic activity in India right now, and blames this on operational issues.Mehraj brings up the huge tax cut the government gave mega corporations a few months ago, and wonders why this hasn’t resulted in a jump in investments. Vivek responds, “When a corporate invests, they hope to see a return on their investment, but there has been a consumption dip.”Madhu chimes in, “I’m wondering about the inconvenience that so many traders complain about when they talk about the problems that GST and such have caused them. But they then turn around and express their vehement support for Modi.” Manisha asks: “How much are people driven by the economy, actually, as opposed to ideas?” Madhu calls this a “psychological disconnect between your vote and your daily troubles”.Moving on to the big news of the week, Manisha talks about how Kunal Kamra gave Arnab Goswami “the Republic TV treatment” on an IndiGo flight. Manisha likes the term Abhinandan used in his piece on the incident — “ambush monologue” — and asks Madhu, “How many times have you been accosted by viewers?” “Thousands!” Madhu responds, talking about being waylaid in planes, washrooms, and even restaurants and parties. “Especially after the contempt of court thing,” she adds, “but I don’t object to it.” Madhu then explains how journalists write in a public space and that the public have a right to argue with reporters, and it is a journalist’s responsibility to deal with it.In the context of the ethics of Kunal’s actions, Mehraj queries whether Arnab can even be called a journalist. “Technically Radio Rwanda was considered journalism as well,” he points out. “And because there is no culture of accountability in this country, we just let this happen.”The panel also discusses the shooting at Jamia Nagar, Sharjeel Imam’s sedition case, Prashant Kishore’s ousting from the JDU, and much more. Last week, comedian Kunal Kamra heckled conservative Republic TV news host Arnab Goswami on a flight, and it became national news. While the reaction by private airlines and the Indian government was criticized by national and international media, many people seemed to be divided on heckling as a means of protest. In this week’s episode, we discuss the method and its effects and implications.

IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet have barred Kunal Kamra from flying with them after he heckled Republic TV anchor Arnab Goswami onboard a flight. Kamra reportedly confronted Goswami with multiple questions and mocked him even as Goswami chose to ignore him. Such behavior can be a nuisance for other passengers besides posing security risks. But is the ban too harsh a step?
While Delhi is holding full fledged campaigns for the upcoming elections and newsrooms are bracing for Budget 2020, a rather peculiar incident is making the headlines and stirring up a lot of conversation on social media.Comedian Kunal Kamra posted a video on Twitter where he's seen doing what some are calling “heckling” and others are calling “confronting” Republic TV journalist Arnab Goswami about his journalism. The video was shot in an IndiGo airlines flight which banned him for six months, only hours after the incident. But what happened after is a chain reaction.First the state-owned Air India banned him, followed by SpiceJet and then GoAir.This happened after a prompting from Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister for Civil Aviation. Commenting on the incident he had tweeted, “Offensive behaviour designed to provoke & create disturbance inside an aircraft is absolutely unacceptable & endangers safety of air travellers. We are left with no option but to advise other airlines to impose similar restrictions on the person concerned.”Should Kamra have approached Goswami in a flight? Should IndiGo have banned Kamra for this? We spoke to journalists and comedians and the jury is divided. Abhinandan says: “If your own guy who’s supposed to report to you in your office, which happened a year ago, would not listen to Arvind Kejriwal ... He wouldn’t come in the room when you called him—what can be the reason for giving that to the Centre?”The panel moves on to discuss the contempt charges against the CBI's former interim director Nageswara Rao. Raman says the main reason for contempt charges was transferring the officer probing the Muzaffarpur shelter home horror. He adds, “Right from the day one, he has been breaking all the rules.”The panel also talks about the CAG report on the Rafale deal, with Abhinandan reading out some of the details. In this week’s podcast, our regular Hafta gang of Abhinandan Sekri, Madhu Trehan, Manisha Pande and Raman Kirpal are joined by Newslaundry subscriber Anushka Shah who is a researcher with MIT Media Lab. The podcast kicks off with a discussion on the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 after Indira Gandhi’s assassination. The team talks about how even today, media coverage of communal riots has been limited to political whataboutery where journalists only cover how a political party accuses the other. Anushka points out that in the last two years, the 1984 riots has been covered twice as much as 2002 Gujarat riots. They talk about the Delhi High Court’s judgement convicting Congress politician Sajjan Kumar for his role in the riots. Madhu says journalists should focus on writing descriptive accounts of court proceedings instead of limiting reports to the final court judgement.Moving on, Abhinandan mentions how political parties offer farm loan waivers to please their voters. Manisha says loan waivers are only a short-term solution and we need to look at the root causes of farmer distress. Anushka says 25 per cent of all news stories on agriculture are about loan waivers while stories on unemployment and agricultural unproductivity are less than 0.2 per cent. The panellists then discuss the court ruling on the Rafael deal. In the judgement, the court said it has no objection to any part of the deal. Madhu says one needs to recognise that courts are not investigating agencies. Raman replies, “Reliance has never been into aviation (sector) and they get such a huge project of around ₹30,000 crores. I personally feel this was a good enough reason for a probe.”The podcast also touches upon Rajiv Gandhi’s role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Abhinandan says that as a representative of the state apparatus, Rajiv Gandhi deserved to be tried for culpable homicide. Madhu says that one should note that Rajiv Gandhi was living an apolitical life, and was not ready to be in a position of power. She adds, “I don’t think Rajiv Gandhi ordered the killings of Sardars, it was the people who wanted to please the Gandhi family.”Towards the end, Abhinandan refers to Republic TV's Republic Summit that was held on December 18 and 19. He says that with guests like PM Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and businessman Mukesh Ambani, the summit seemed more like Annual General Meeting for the BJP.Listen up! There’s more. On this week’s NL Hafta, Abhinandan is joined by Madhu Trehan, Raman Kirpal and guest Ajoy Ashirwad, Deputy Editor at The Wire. Journalist TS Sudhir from India Today joins the panel on the phone to discuss the Karnataka results. The talk kicks off with the elections, with Sudhir sharing the possible political manoeuvrings that can be adopted by the BJP to prove its majority in the Assembly. Enumerating on the vulnerable spots in the JD(S) and Congress, he says: “Caste and Cash, these are the two things that are being used to kind of ensure a majority for the BJP government.” Abhinandan brings in the Karnataka governor’s decision to call the BJP first to form the government. Madhu weighs in with a pertinent reference to 1996. The Suresh Mehta-led government in Gujarat, under which the present Karnataka governor held a cabinet portfolio, was dismissed by then Prime Minister Deve Gowda. She remarks, “So, this was his Karmic chance.” Ajoy says: “The governor was facing a kind of complicated situation where he had to choose between constitutional responsibility and party loyalty, and we know what he chose now.” On the matter of “horse-trading” of MLAs, Abhinandan comments: “One thing it definitely shows is that our democracy is very immature.” He adds: “For one, something like this happens… and no reporter is out there who will question the MLAs who flipped! Why did you flip? What were the specifics?” Abhinanadan wonders about the possibility of turncoats being re-elected. Sudhir says it depends on the constituency, for instance in places like Ballari ‘muscle power’ can be used to ensure no formidable candidate stands against them. The panel also discusses the ‘supremacy’ of certain individuals and groups that still persists, despite the system discouraging discrimination. Talking about whataboutery, which has become the trend nowadays, Abhinandan weighs in by saying: “This whataboutery has just become the default setting of not just politicians but every journalist in the country.” Madhu adds: “They don’t have any credibility at all. I think we’ve come full circle on that.”Raman points out that “we've hit the bottom already. If you check the TRPs… people have stopped watching TV”.Adding to this, Madhu talks about the ban on Republic TV in a chain of hotels because of the thought process of the owner.Talking about Smriti Irani and the recent cabinet reshuffle, Abhinandan asks: “Why do you think she was asked to go?” Madhu responds: “I will really miss her. She’s very articulate, she’s very well dressed… I don’t think any of the things she’s done, they weren’t done by herself alone. They were done with the PMO’s knowledge and approval. The government has its eye on the 2019 elections.”Raman agrees, saying “she used to pick up fights and creates controversy… the government doesn’t want it, very simple.” Ajoy adds that “all the controversies she created actually worked out to the advantage of the BJP."Abhinandan updates the panel by reading a report on News18. "Security to be withdrawn from the resort where all MLAs are staying - they’re being moved to Punjab or Kerala." To this, Madhu asks, “Why has he chosen Punjab and Kerala?” Abhinandan points out that there is a non-BJP government there. He jokingly asks Ajoy: “Would you say Odisha’s biggest contribution to the country has been Sambit Patra?” Ajoy in his reply highlights the stereotypes and adds: “Why would I say that… He represents the Odiya face in Delhi. Not the food or dance forms and diverse cultures.”The panel talks about Patra’s crassness that is conspicuous in his verbal and online communication. Abhinandan feels that “he is just a very vile man” while Madhu says “he is very entertaining”. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
