What is Hinduism? For centuries, that question was particularly thorny, both for local Indians and for colonial outsiders. People inside and outside the country tried to define what Hinduism was. Missionaries grappled with Hindu practices, finding both similarities and dangerous differences with their own Christian faith. The East India Company adopted several Hindu rituals to keep the peace, much to the chagrin of officials back in London. And, increasingly, Indians began to define what Hinduism meant as part of a broader political awakening. Manu Pillai tells that story in his latest book Gods, Guns and Missionaries: The Making of the Modern Hindu Identity (Allen Lane: 2024) Manu Pillai is the author of the critically acclaimed The Ivory Throne: Chronicles of the House of Travancore (HarperCollins: 2016), Rebels Sultans: The Deccan from Khilji to Shivaji (Juggernaut: 2018), The Courtesan, the Mahatma, and the Italian Brahmin: Tales from Indian History (Context: 2019) and False Allies: India's Maharajahs in the Age of Ravi Varma (Juggernaut: 2021). Former chief of staff to Shashi Tharoor MP, Pillai is also a winner of the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar (2017) and holds a PhD in history from King's College London.
Arun Gandhi is in 2023 overleden. Events that happened on November 6 This Day in Baseball history. November 6 , 1887 Walter Johnson was born on this day in 1887. Considered by many to be the greatest right-hander in baseball history, Johnson was the hardest thrower of his time. He was a phenomenally successful pitcher on often terrible Washington Senators' teams. As a veteran, he anchored the only Senators' World Series winning club, in 1924. He and Christy Mathewson were the first pitchers inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was known as the “Big Train” and in later years, upon seeing Bob Feller throw his hard one, Johnson admitted that he had thrown harder in his day. Johnson is the greatest player to ever play for the Washington Senators, debuting on August 2, 1907, against the Detroit Tigers and Ty Cobb. “He's got a gun concealed about his person. They can't tell me he throws them balls with his arm.” – Famed writer Ring Lardner wrote of JohnsonSam Rice tells the truth about game 3 of the 1925 World Series - On November 6, 1974, the contents of a letter written by the late Sam Rice to the Hall of Fame are revealed in Cooperstown, New York. In the letter, Rice, who had instructed the letter be opened after his death, says that he did successfully make a disputed catch in the 1925 World Series.Bud Selig goes toe to toe with the players association - November 6, 2001 — Denying it's a negotiating ploy, major league owners give commissioner Bud Selig the authority to “begin the process” of eliminating two ‘to be announced' teams by a 28-2 vote. Donald Fehr, the Players Association executive director, calls the action of possibly eliminating the Expos, Twins, or Marlins most imprudent and unfortunate, and the worst manner in which to begin the process of negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement. We had hoped that we were in a new era, one that would see a much better relationship between players and owners. Today's announcement is a severe blow to such hopes.November 6, 1950, Branch Rickey signs a five-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates after selling his 25 per cent interest in the Brooklyn Dodgers' franchise. On October 26, Rickey had resigned as Brooklyn's president, giving way to Walter O'Malley. Rickey will serve as the Pirates' general manager and executive vice-president. The ‘Mahatma's' magic doesn't seem to work, as the Bucs will compile a 269-501 record (.349) during his tenure in Pittsburgh.

Even though Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most well known figures in Indian history, for many, especially the young, he has become a bit of a two dimensional figure. Someone who helped us get independence from the British, but also someone whose face is on the currency notes, and who has a lot of streets named after him.Though it is only when we read his letters to friends, family and opponents, or their accounts of encounters with him, we get a much more three dimensional picture of the Mahatma. Recently, his grandson, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the former governor of West Bengal, has compiled and edited, A Frank Friendship, that brings out these details. The book is about the Mahatma's long history with Bengal, a state that brought him great joy, but also tested his life's philosophy. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, he joins Sandip Roy to talk about the book, and how the state shaped the father of the nation. Edited and mixed by Suresh Pawar

We spent a recorded hour with esteemed journalist and editor Perry Garfinkle, author of the bestselling Buddha or Bust and the recently published Becoming Gandhi. Perry spoke of his quest to find morality in Gandhi's life and work and Gandhi's six principles and the differences between being and becoming – the latter presupposing the infinite in practice. Perry spoke of the Mahatma's lack of understanding of his own sexuality as well as his belief in goodness, which Perry labeled "pollyannaish." He was able to mix criticism of Gandhi and his principles, including naivete about social violence in man's nature and less sophistication in Gandhi than in the Buddha, with high respect for Gandhi's deep understanding of human suffering and the need for compassion and empathy with an enduring belief in passive resistance as a means to change. Perry spoke of religious differences in India and Gandhi's letters to Hitler, which went unanswered, and the media's overplay of an incident involving the Dali Lama, who wrote the Foreword to Perry's book, and a young boy. Michael and Perry also discuss the efficacy in today's world of passive resistance and links to Thoreau and Martin Luther King, as well as fasting and the impact of Richard Attenborough's famous film about the Mahatma and the Mahatma's essential twin pillars of truth and non-violence. Perry concluded by calling himself a cynic by profession but one who felt heartened as a result of being changed by studying Gandhi and striving to be "Perry 2.0."

With a bit of a twist and a sprinkling of spice, Swami Padmanabha and Mahatma das bring to the table the vital conversation of self-love in bhakti—a conversation not only rarely had but often silently undermined through misconceptions of bhakti and, therefore, everything else that relates to Her—ourself, our practice, and God. Dispel self-sabotaging myths and discover the interpenetrating reality of self-love and love for God in this unique “purvapaksha-style” dialogue where the “friend mind”— represented as affirmations that support a healthy, vibrant sense of self rooted in the reality that we are a beloved of God—and the “enemy” mind—those countering, self-defeatist statements that sabotage our ability to own and step into that reality. Escuchar audio

In a confessional reflection on writing his new book, Becoming Gandhi, acclaimed journalist and bestselling author Perry Garfinkel says, “It was so difficult I almost gave up twice. I thought, ‘I can't write this book. It's too big a subject. Who am I to try to become Gandhi?'” Garfinkel persevered, and in this podcast Tami Simon speaks with him about what he discovered along the journey—and how practicing (not perfecting) six universal principles of the Mahatma can transform each one of us. Tune in to this highly aspirational yet very down-to-earth conversation on the poignance of the human condition and the elixir of laughter; the Tao of Gandhi; satyagraha, an insistence on and holding firm to the truth; considering “how to Gandhi” a situation you're faced with; the notion of “good enough”; nonviolence in thought, word, and deed; the connection between words and feelings, and the step-by-step process of personal transformation; simplicity; faith as the driver of our moral compass; celibacy and making love; Gandhi's life as his message—and making peace with his imperfections; and more.
