In this episode of the Memoirs of an LDS Servant Teacher Podcast, host Maurice Harker explores how to turn intrusive thoughts, exhaustion, and spiritual opposition into fuel for growth instead of proof that you're failing.Drawing from the Come, Follow Me lesson and recent general conference talks, Maurice explains how to reframe negative self-talk as deliberate spiritual opposition, not “just your own broken mind.” He walks through his process of creating “Notes to Self”—personalized, gospel-rooted reminders in written and audio form—to anchor your mind when Satan attacks with shame, depletion, or “you're not enough” narratives. In this episode, you'll learn:How to recognize intrusive, self-critical thoughts as spiritual warfare—not your true identityWhy exhaustion and burnout are often a satanic strategy, not a badge of righteousnessHow customized audios and written “notes to self” can function as a personal iron rod during late-night anxiety and early-morning attacksWhy God expects you to rest and let divine compensation (ministering angels, teammates, and grace) cover what you can't doHow to support youth and adults who are wrestling with questions, doubt, and truth-seeking without fearIf you're an LDS spouse, parent, leader, or disciple striving for self-mastery, resilient faith, and Christ-centered emotional health, this episode will help you see your mental battles in a new light—and give you practical tools to fight back with the Savior instead of against yourself.

Today, I'm talking about something I don't do well in my reading life, but I want to: adding annotation and marginalia to the books I read. I'm quite comfortable with my sticky note and book dart practices, but something is calling me to explore more methods to leave tracks of my thinking in the books I read. Come listen as I explore the how and why behind annotation, marginalia and what I like to call ‘bookish notes to self'. We'll discuss why it matters and I'll offer 5 ways you could bring the practice to your own reading life…which means you're more able to make changes in your actual life, too. What do YOU think about annotation, marginalia and bookish notes to self? I'd love to hear more about your practices in the comments so I can give them a try, too! I'm thinking about workflow associated with audio Notes to Self after hearing Elsie Escobar riff about it on Twitter. I often make audio notes to self when I see something by using HiQ MP3 recorder to shift content automatically to Google Drive. Then I clear the Drive notifications by sharing the clip into a Notion database. I often elaborate on the audio clip by discovering something in my Notion I can use to make the audio snippet more worthwhile. For this whole process to be sustainable, the audio clips should relate to a goal. The goal needs to be free of bottlenecks. And the content needs to appear in an another channel such as my RSS or Feedspot.

Julie Hesmondhalgh is a well known face on television and stage. Recently she has been in The Pact on BBC1 and played Hayley in Coronation Street. Her choice of book is Notes To Self by Emilie Pine - a raw and powerful memoir of life for a young Irish woman. It's not a 'mis-mem' or misery memoir as Julie is keen to point out, rather a life affirming and honest account of womanhood, a book she has given copies of to many women friends. Elaine C Smith chooses the memoir of Scots poet Jackie Kay - Red Dust Road - a love letter as Elaine describes it - to Jackie's adoptive parents as well as her birth parents. It deals with the painful quest to find her Nigerian father and Scots mother whilst feeling that she was betraying her loving adoptive parents. It also recounts the prejudices experienced by a young dual heritage girl. We are discussing sexual energy, sexual trauma, reclaiming your sexual energy, what it means to be a cognitive interrupter, and so much more. This was a powerful episode for both of us; topics that are sexual in nature are steered away from so frequently. There is also an important message here for parents.
