Gabriel Barcia-Colombo Recorded at the Stony Island Arts Bank during the Chicago Architecture Biennial Gabriel Barcia-Colombo joins Bad at Sports from a rain-soaked tailgate outside the Stony Island Arts Bank, in the middle of Chicago Architecture Biennial programming and an open-hours weekend that turns the city into both subject and stage. A media artist whose work consistently centers human presence inside technological systems, Barcia-Colombo is in Chicago to present Media Stream, a large-scale public artwork that brings the people of Chicago directly onto the architecture they move through every day. The project is built from hundreds of filmed participants, composited into an algorithmic, ever-changing flow across vertical LED blades embedded in a public building. Contributors are asked to perform ordinary gestures, then to imagine moments of sublimity or loss, producing intimate, vulnerable expressions that are scaled up and encountered by strangers passing through the space. The result is a work that reverses the usual logic of media spectacle, shifting attention away from screens and systems and back toward the faces of people themselves. From there, the conversation opens into a wide-ranging discussion of digital memory, data after death, and the uneasy permanence of media archives. Barcia-Colombo reflects on early works like Animalia, Chordata, his long-running interest in collecting and containing human presence, and later projects such as The Hereafter Institute, which staged personalized funerals for participants' digital lives. Throughout, the group wrestles with the problem of preservation in media art, from CRT monitors and film projectors to contemporary AI tools that threaten to erase labor, context, and material specificity. The episode also touches on Barcia-Colombo's collaboration with David Byrne, his role as co-director of NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program, and the contradictions of teaching technology as a humanist practice inside systems driven by speed, spectacle, and capitalization. What emerges is a thoughtful meditation on how artists can still create moments of connection and care inside infrastructures not designed for either. Recorded live, mid-storm, with rain hitting the merch cart and conversation drifting easily between theory, jokes, and deeply personal reflection. Highlights & Moments Turning public architecture into a living portrait of the city LED "blades" as broken, moving images rather than seamless spectacle Directing strangers to perform the everyday and the sublime Data, memory, and what happens to our digital lives after death Early video art as prophecy rather than nostalgia The problem of preserving media art as technologies disappear Labor, erasure, and value in digital and AI-assisted work Teaching technology as a humanist practice at NYU ITP Collaborating with David Byrne under extreme time constraints AI as mirror, therapist, and deeply unsettling collaborator Names Dropped Stony Island Arts Bank — https://rebuild-foundation.org/site/stony-island-arts-bank/ Chicago Architecture Biennial — https://www.chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org Media Stream - https://150mediastream.com/ Gabriel Barcia-Colombo - https://www.gabebc.com/ Times Square public art installations Animalia, Chordata The Hereafter Institute Nam June Paik — https://www.paikstudios.com Bruce Nauman — https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/bruce-nauman-1478 Paul Pfeiffer — https://www.moma.org/artists/4595 Christian Marclay — https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/christian-marclay-732 NYU Tisch School of the Arts — https://tisch.nyu.edu Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) — https://itp.nyu.edu Neon Museum, Las Vegas — https://www.neonmuseum.org

A conversation with Paul Pfeiffer, Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, and Anthony Elms recorded in May 2025. Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa makes art, writes about it, and occasionally edits essay anthologies. His artist's book, INDEX 2025, is out now from ROMA Publications, and his recent essay “ECHO—LOCATION,” on installations at Dia Art Foundation by Cameron Rowland and Steve McQueen, featured in the April issue of e-flux journal.  Recent exhibitions include Scene at Eastman, at George Eastman Museum (2025), Greater New York at MoMA PS1 (2021), and But Still, It Turns at the International Center of Photography, New York (2021).  Read more essays in e-flux journal by Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa here. Paul Pfeiffer recasts the visual language of pop spectacle to investigate how media images shape our perception of the world and ourselves. Working in video, photography, sculpture, and sound, he is drawn to moments intended for mass audiences (live sports events, stadium concert tours, televised game shows, celebrity glamour shots), which he meticulously samples and re-edits to expose an uncanny emptiness underneath. From the hyperreality of photo retouching and digital erasure to the endless repetition of video loops, his mastery of postproduction allows him to magnify the surreal aspects of contemporary existence, where bodies become sites of saturated observation, and violence-as-entertainment flirts with nationalism, religion, and ancient myth. While he also experiments with the format and scale of his works, immersive audiovisual installations often cohabit with portable fetish objects in his exhibitions. Throughout his practice, Pfeiffer seeks to reflect and heighten the existential condition of the viewer as consumer by perversely blurring the boundary between voyeurism and contemplation. The recent exhibition discussed in this episode, Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom was presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the MCA Chicago.  Read a review from e-flux Criticism of Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Los Angeles by Juliana Halpert. Anthony Elms organizes exhibitions and writes. He recently organized Rodney McMillian: Neighbors for the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, Wa. opening in October 2025. An essay on artist Oliver Ressler, "Ellipsesverse," posts online this fall for Ressler's exhibition Scenes from the Invention of Democracy at the Museum Tinguely. His essay "Begin to begin to begin to begin to begin" is forthcoming in Ecstatic Aperture: Perspectives on the Life and Work of Terry Riley. from Auryfa / Shelter Press.

Episode No. 708 features artist Paul Pfeiffer. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is showing the retrospective "Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom." For over 25 years, Pfeiffer has investigated spectacle and mass culture, especially sport, and has found within it the power to create and extend political narratives. Included within the exhibition is only the second US presentation of Pfeiffer's landmark 2007 The Saints, an immersive sound and video installation that considers the 1966 men's World Cup final between England and West Germany that is one of the most significant works of the 21st century. "Pfeiffer" was curated by Clara Kim and Paula Kroll. The MCA presentation, which is on view through August 31, was organized by Bana Kattan with Iris Colburn. When award-winning comedian Liz Glazer watched The Wonder Years as a kid, she thought she was seeing, for the first time a kid just like her: one who knew even as he lived his life that he'd one day look back on all this wistfully. This simple (mis?)interpretation of the show foreshadowed the type of adult she'd grow into: a comedian who is able to weave tragic experience into comedy with ease. After Jordan and Liz's conversation, Jordan has one quick thing about the  new John Cena/Jackie Chan pairing we've all been waiting for (right?).***With Jordan Crucchiola and Liz GlazerLiz's new LP, A Very Particular Experience

Photo: Joey Trisolini Born in Honolulu in 1966, Paul Pfeiffer grew up between Hawaii and the Philippines before moving to New York in 1990 to attend Hunter College and the Whitney Independent Study Program. Pfeiffer is known for his highly sophisticated use of digital technologies and new media, and has created celebrated works of video, photography, installation and sculpture since the late 1990s. Using digital erasure, magnification, and repetition, Pfeiffer samples and retouches images or video footage from sporting events, concerts, game shows and Hollywood films to enhance their psychological effects. By drawing attention to certain aspects of visual culture and concealing others, he underlines the spectacular nature of contemporary media and its consumption. Pfeiffer's videos are often presented using unusual monitors and hybrid hardware, further emphasizing the ostracizing effect of the found footage and incorporating a crucial sculptural element to the work. Pfeiffer has had one-person exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2001); the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2003 and 2017-18); the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2005); MUSAC León, Spain (2008); the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2009) and Sammlung Goetz, Munich, Germany (2011). Pfeiffer has presented work in major international exhibitions in recent years, including the Performa Biennial and the Honolulu Biennial in 2019 and the Toronto Biennial and Seoul Mediacity Biennale in 2022. In this episode Paul Pfeiffer and Kevin Arnold's birthdays are just days apart, and the two friends have usually always celebrated together. But this year, upon turning 13 Paul(as per Jewish Tradition), will become a man. The only problem is that Paul's Bar Mitzvah happens to take place on the same day as Kevin's Birthday! I loved the “Bookends” song that played at the end of the episode as the picture of Kevin and Paul fades to black and white. Such a good episode and I’m happy Kevin changed his tune and was a good supportive friend to Paul on his big day. Have a great week everyone!

Hey there Wonderlings, It’s Friday Yay!! Who’s ready for the weekend, it’s finally August and you know what that’s means the last real month of summer. Wow, how did we even get here, right? I’m your host Angela Bowen and today I’ll be reviewing The Wonder Years S2E13 Birthday Boy which aired on April 11, 1989. Speaking of birthdays there’s only 20 days until mine. That’s right on August 24th, I will be turning the big 3-5. During this episode I will be sharing some fun birthday moments of my own, well, the ones I can remember anyway. Time for my flower power episode rating: I’m giving it 5 out of 5 flower power petals 1. For the cute scenes of Paul and Kevin celebrating birthdays together they were so cute. 2. For Grandpa Pfeiffer’s speech at dinner 3. For Norma explaining to Kevin their family history 4. Paul talking up his Bar Mitzvah celebration on the bus to Wayne and Steve and Kevin 5. For the end with Kevin and Paul making up at his party and the song bookends replaying as the scene fades out on a black and white photograph of the boys together. I loved the dancing and laughing. My Wonderling Words of Wisdom: What I got from this episode: not every birthday we have is going to be spectacular, it’d be nice if it they were. I'm sure they’re are some birthdays we could take or leave or would like to forget. The farthest back I can remember is my 6 or 7th birthday. I remember waking up when I was young and running into my parents room screaming it’s my birthday, it’s my birthday today! I remember the strawberry shortcake birthday card on my dresser. Here’s my quote of the episode: Narrator: And so it turned out to be a great birthday after all. I slow danced with Paul's Aunt Selma. I ate more than Mrs. Pfeiffer could have dreamed possible. And in a funny way... when I look back on it... I sorta feel like it was my bar mitzvah, too. And to all you other listeners out there, thanks again for listening. I want to give a sincere thank to all you listeners out there whether you listen to this podcast on Itunes or Soundcloud or any other listening platforms that you may use to hear this podcast. I love giving you the episode recaps of The Wonder Years every week joining me as I go into full detail as we reminisce of days gone by with Kevin and his friends Paul and Winnie, and the rest of the Arnold family. as well as giving my occasional running commentary and childhood stories. Ok, well join me next Friday August 11 when I review S2E14 Brightwing which aired on April 18, 1989. In this episode we get some big sister little brother quality time. Im excited for this because we haven’t really seen them interact to much together. To get closer to his sister, Kevin agrees to run errands for her before school. He soon discovers that she is skipping school to hang out with her friends at the "rock". All right Wonderlings, have a great weekend and we’ll meet again same place, same time, next Friday!!

How I’m Spending My Summer Vacation which aired on May 16,1989. In this episode we start on the last day of school and Kevin is faced with some unexpected surprises, first his dilemma mulling over what to inscribe in Winnie’s yearbook, then his summer plans for him and Paul are shot to hell when Paul announces he and his family are going to stay at a cabin with friends for the next 6 weeks. Next we see Kevin get a sweet kiss from Winnie but right after that she plays him hot and cold at her parents annual luau backyard BBQ and finally ending on Kevin’s realization that all is not well with the Cooper elders. S3E:1 Summer Song which aired on October 3, 1989. The Arnold family and Paul Pfeiffer travel to Ocean City for a little fun in the sun. However, once there, no one really seems to be having any. Kevin is still stinging from the news the Winnie Cooper has a new boyfriend, until he meets a cute (but older) girl named Teri. S5E1: The Lake which aired on October 2, 1991 The Arnolds and the Pfeiffers take their annual summer fishing trip to Lake Winnihacci.
