Was it an exhibition in the strictest sense of the word? Or was it an installation, a happening or even an ‘environment'? It was certainly a landmark event in London that decade. Will worked at Tate at the time, and has fascinating insights into the exhibition and how it came about. This is a Froody Music production. Thanks to Martin Lumsden Hosted on Acast. Timothy Morton, who teaches English at Rice, has become a bit of a rock star interpreter of our hellishly hot planetary times. And his eclectic work has even gotten the stamp of approval of real rock stars - like Laurie Anderson & Björk as well as the Big Lebowski himself, Jeff Bridges. So it was really fun to have him on KEEN ON to talk about HELL: In Search of a Christian Ecology, his new theological guide to how to live in catastrophic times. “This is hell, but not the end of the world,” Timothy Morton says of the world. And so it requires a retro Biblical figure like Morton, a self-styled “angelic demon”, to lead us out of our current hell and recover our human agency. Timothy Morton is Rita Shea Guffey Chair in English at Rice University. He has collaborated with Björk, Laurie Anderson, Jennifer Walshe, Hrafnhildur Arnadottir, Sabrina Scott, Adam McKay, Jeff Bridges, Justin Guariglia, Olafur Eliasson, and Pharrell Williams. Morton co-wrote and appears in Living in the Future's Past, a 2018 film about global warming with Jeff Bridges. He is the author of the libretto for the opera Time Time Time by Jennifer Walshe. He is the author of Being Ecological (Penguin, 2018), Humankind: Solidarity with Nonhuman People (Verso, 2017), Dark Ecology: For a Logic of Future Coexistence (Columbia, 2016), Nothing: Three Inquiries in Buddhism (Chicago, 2015), Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World (Minnesota, 2013), Realist Magic: Objects, Ontology, Causality (Open Humanities, 2013), The Ecological Thought (Harvard, 2010), Ecology without Nature (Harvard, 2007), eight other books and 250 essays on philosophy, ecology, literature, music, art, architecture, design and food. Morton's work has been translated into 10 languages. In 2014, Morton gave the Wellek Lectures in Theory.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Künstler machen was sie wollen, Designer wollen was sie machen. Sagt Kurt Weidemann. Aber ist es wirklich so einfach? Wo sehen wir den entscheidenden Unterschied, oder aber die Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen Kunst und Design? In unserer neuen Folge von Grid. An accidental invention which revolutionised plant collecting has inspired an artwork from Mat Collishaw, created in collaboration with video artists based in Ukraine, which is being premiered in a gallery at Kew Gardens. The nine minute video, accompanied by music by Samuel Barber's Adagio for strings, draws on the discovery in 1829 that a Wardian case could allow plants to grow under airtight glass. And the way art and music respond to environmental concerns is at the heart of this Free Thinking conversation hosted by Jade Munslow Ong. Jimmy López Bellido has written a symphony inspired by photographs of a changing landscape, Sarah Casey's drawings look at the impact of ice melting in glaciers and New Generation Thinker Vid Simoniti has written a book exploring the political ambitions of contemporary art in the early twenty-first century. He talks about the work of Alberta Whittle, Olafur Eliasson, El Anatsui, Maurice Mbikayi, Margaret Wertheim and Christine Wertheim. Producer in Salford: Nick Holmes Petrichor, a new exhibition of work by Mat Collishaw runs from 20 October 2023- 7 April 2024 at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art, Kew Gardens. Sarah Casey is Director of the School of Art in Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts and has worked on The Emergency project which uses drawing to examine artefacts emerging from alpine glaciers as a result of climate change and ice melting. She also convenes a group studying rocky environments and geology. From 26-28th October ‘Rocky Futures', an art exhibition in the form of three live video events streamed from destinations across the globe on the theme of geology, mobilities and the climate emergency will be available online at https://wp.lancs.ac.uk/rocky-climates/rocky-futures/ Vid Simoniti's book is called Artists Remake the World: A Contemporary Art Manifesto.

Episode Summary:On this World Whale Day we devote our episode to the Ocean - one of the most important places on our planet and home to thousand of different plant and animal species. The aquatic ecosystems make up 70.8 percent of the earth's surface and act as a buffer against many critical global issues including pollution and over-harvesting, it is a source of half of the oxygen we breathe. We have the pleasure to meet Markus Reymann, a Director of TBA21–Academy and an advocate for ocean literacy, research and conservation. He expands on his mission and tells us about how creativity and global collaboration with tribalizers in the fields of art and science - such as Olafur Eliasson, David Gruber and the new exhibition with Wu Tsang 'Of Whales' opening this 21st of February - can foster ocean's restoration. The Speaker:Markus Reymann is Director of TBA21–Academy, a non-profit cultural organization he co-founded in 2011 that fosters interdisciplinary dialogue and exchange surrounding the most urgent ecological, social, and economic issues facing our oceans today. Reymann leads the Academy's engagement with artists, activists, scientists, and policy-makers worldwide, resulting in the creation of new commissions, new bodies of knowledge, and new policies advancing the conservation and protection of the oceans. In March 2019, TBA21–Academy launched Ocean Space, a new global port for ocean literacy, research, and advocacy. Located in the restored Church of San Lorenzo in Venice, Italy, Ocean Space is activated by the itinerant Academy and its network of partners, including universities, NGOs, museums, government agencies, and research institutes from around the world.Follow Markus Reymann, TBA21-Academy and Ocean Space journey.Hosts: Farah Piriye & Elizabeth Zhivkova, ZEITGEIST19 FoundationFor sponsorship enquiries, comments, ideas and collaborations, email us at info@zeitgeist19.com Follow us on InstagramHelp us to continue our mission and to develop our podcast: Donate

She talks about exploring the darker sides of Whitney's life and working with British actor Naomi Ackie who stars in the title role. Hannah Khalil, writer-in-residence at Shakespeare's Globe theatre, tells Luke about her retelling of the classic 1001 Nights story cycle - Hakawatis: Women of the Arabian Nights, which reimagines Scheherazade's storytelling feat as a team writing effort. Today I'm speaking with Lauren Puckett. She's an artist with an adventurous spirit and a love of flying airplanes. She just recently returned to the states from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland where she was working on her PhD in glass and now, she's currently in a residency at the McColl Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The sky's the limit for this artist and pilot, but where she's currently gaining altitude is by intertwining feminine studies with glass in an unexpected and seamless way. Her pieces examine subculture, stereotypes and representation with contemporary power structures. Her work is powerful and thought provoking, and creates the start of conversations that need to be had. Everything she's doing will make a lasting impression, her efforts to modernize our traditional practice with her C&C plasma framing system included. It's the spark to a flame that may make the future of stained glass more safe and therefore more accessible. It's now possible to download the imagination of the environmental artist to a street near you, via an app. But is it as good as the real thing? Reporter Anna Bailey pressed download and spoke to Olafur to find out. Public art has long been the preserve of men but feminist artists Nikki Luna from the Philippines and Bahia Shehab in Egypt challenge the patriarchy, by taking up space on the street and online. Nikki Luna's audio-visual installations confront gender-based violence with the voices of marginalised women, while Bahia Shehab's street art foregrounds the female form and addresses consent. Earlier this week, Adrianne and I watched the first episode of the new season of Abstract on the Netflix . For those of you who haven't seen it, Abstract is a fantastic show about art and design. It follows roughly the same format as something like Chef's Table — which is also an excellent show — where each episode profiles a specific artist or designer. Last season included Tinker Hatfield, Paula Scher, and Platon among others and this season starts out with someone who I've never heard of by name though I have seen his work. Olafur Eliasson is an artist and architect whose large scale works are focused and really dependent on the user or viewer's experience of them. Many of his works center around light — specifically, the effects and manipulation of light. For example, one of his earlier pieces is called “Beauty” and it was his attempt to create a rainbow by lighting a gentle waterfall of very fine mist. The effect was such that no two people experience exactly the same rainbow, since the color and intensity are based entirely on your viewing angle relative to the mist. “This is a space totally dependent on you being there,” Olafur says. “When you leave the exhibition, and there's no-one in the room, there's also no art.” This idea is really core to Olafur's art — the Why of his art, if you will. Each piece he makes is a sort of challenge. As he puts it, “do I trust my own eyes and my own capacity to engage in the world?” His work is completely dependent on the spectator. It's a collaboration –maybe even a conversation – between him as the artist and us as the viewer. Even his episode of Abstract is a collaboration, beginning with Olafur breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to the camera — to us — as he presents the conditions of our collaboration.
