Pauline Murray kept a diary when she and Penetration were on the punk rock frontline and her vivid and emotional memories appear in a new memoir, Life's A Gamble, beautifully illustrated with personal photos, press cuttings, late ‘70s gig listings and other lovingly archived memorabilia. It teleports you back to a time when pop music made daily headlines and battles were lost and won in fragrant dancehalls and knackered vans on motorways. As does this podcast, recorded with an audience at London's 21Soho club in late November. Aged 14 she was travelling to London from County Durham and sleeping in railway stations to see the Pistols and the Clash. She formed Penetration in ‘76 and for two hectic years they were caught up in the whirlwind. This account of it all includes Alan Freeman, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Jonathan Richman, Tim Curry (as Dr Frank-N-Furter), why the deaths of Sid and Nancy has such symbolic significance, the female punk ‘sisterhood' giving her the cold shoulder, her unwise marriage, and the profit and loss statement of the debt she still owes Virgin (the annual reminders have never stopped). And she talks movingly about the experience every group endures when their first flush of mutual love and enthusiasm turns to bitter inter-personal fall-out. One of her kids was in the audience. Welcome to this special edition of Retrosonic Podcast where we talk to the legendary music photographer Paul Slattery about some of the recent books and records to use some of his iconic pictures. There's Johnny Marr's new book "Marr's Guitars" and Paul pays tribute to The Smiths' bassist Andy Rourke who sadly passed away recently. There's news of Paul's recent meeting with Mona Soyoc from KaS Product in France and their new compilation album. Penetration and Invisible Girls frontwoman Pauline Murray has included some of Paul's photos in her promising forthcoming autobiography "Life's A Gamble". Then there's the comprehensive Subhumans book "Silence Is No Reaction" by Ian Glasper. The shortlived but influential band Empire featuring Bob Derwood Andrews and Mark Laff of Generation X used Paul's pics for their "Expensive Sound" album which was a favourite of Johnny Marr and John Squire and was an inspiration on Fugazi and the Washington DC Hardcore scene. Damaged Goods Records will reissue Thee Headcoats' classic album "Heavens To Murgatroyd" with new cover photography by Paul. Then we discuss the upcoming Joy Division walking tour and talk in Stockport which coincodes with Paul's book "Joy Division at Strawberry Studios". Paul also picks his favourite Joy Division track which also happens to feature on the most expensive record in his collection. Then Paul discusses his love of the German Electronic and New Wave 'Neue Deutsche Welle' scene and looks back on a special night in Blois in France with The Flamin' Groovies and local Pub Rock heroes Sharpers. On the fifth episode of the Post-Punk Podcast, our Editor-in-Chief Alex Baker spoke to Wayne Hussey of The Mission, a band that formed in wake of The Sisters of Mercy's debut album First and Last and Always, and its aborted follow-up. During the interview, Wayne talks about his work with several other bands, including Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls and Dead or Alive. Wayne also spoke on what the original Goth scene featured at Planet X in Liverpool was like, as well as his visit to Danceteria in New York, and the origins of some of the iconic Goth fashions of the 80s, including the famous Goth cowboy hat. Wayne discussed all of this and more, including the origins of some iconic songs from both TSOM and The Mission, with more in-depth details on these stories to be found in part one of his autobiography Salad Daze. Wayne also launched The Remission International Charity collaboration, where various artists from the Post-Punk and Gothic Rock scenes came together in support of front-line workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic. You can find more info about the "Tower of Strength 2020" aka "TOS2020" here. Be sure to check out Wayne's Lynchian duet of ‘The Delicate Balance of All Things” with his wife Cinthya for Michael Ciravolo's Beauty in Chaos, a collaborative track that heralds more to come between Mr. and Mrs. Hussey. OK, I give up--I am playing some fairly well known bands this time--but you have to have the greats in a show about the Manchester scene ( though I am leaving out the Smiths, because they are just too big)--Manchester had my favorite label, Factory records, My favorite producer ( Martin Hannett) and my favorite band ( Joy Division)--plus, a TON of other great bands. I am trying to play a few of the lesser known greats as well , like John Cooper Clarke ( now performing again), more Pauline Murray, plus Ludus, Magazine, Barry Adamson, the Fall ( probably the best known other than Joy Division ), Joy Division ( 2 songs), and A certain Ratio. Too many bands have been left out, but gotta move on to other subjects--the may someday be a Manchester Part 2, who knows? Anyone want to win a T-Shirt? Next episode, there will be another quiz where you can--stay tuned, and like the Cramps used to say, Stay Sick!

I have a great affection for female vocals, so here is a celebration of some of the best and rarest from the early Postpunk era. In fact I have so many groups to choose from, that this is part one of 2--This part features Toyah WIlcox, ultra rare songs from Dolly Mixture, obscure music from Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls, Danielle Dax, The Slits, and rarely heard music by Bjork's early band KUKL.
