Send us a textOn Monday, June 8th, 2020, the murders of sisters Bibba Henry and Nina Smallman made the news. It wasn't just their brutal murder that was so harrowing, or the fact they were so close...or that the killer was so depraved. No. It was the way police mishandled their case, refusing to treat them with dignity. Merch, patreon, discord, kofi and more here: https://linktr.ee/cruelteaSupport the show

In this episode, Jonah and Patrick take us back to the beginning of Paul's letter to the Ephesians, where he introduces himself as “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God…” With that simple line, they take us on a journey—of Saul taking on the name Paul, of becoming an apostle or ‘sent one' of God, and of discerning the many ‘wills' at work in the depths of our beings. In the letter, Paul is inviting us to turn towards and unite ourselves more and more with the thoughts, feelings and will impulses of the True Human Being.Support the Show. Many thanks to Camilla Lake for show notes and Podcast/Patreon production and communications. With few exceptions most short lived metal bands make forgettable comeback albums. One very recent and clear exception to this rule is the stunning death doom record "Death of Sorrow" by Sorrow (Extreme Records, 2023). "Death of Sorrow" is equal parts catchy crushing riffs and and deeply personal ferocity--killer vocals and lyrics that are brutal commentaries on political corruption, religious hypocrisy, and the dark side of the human condition. If you've listened to earlier episodes, you know Jeff and Ben are huge fans of hardcore punk legends Black Flag, Minor Threat, and many others. We appreciate hardcore's brutally honest lyrics, DIY ethos, and take no prisoners delivery. To that end, Sorrow is a rare gem. While they play slow crushing death metal, songs like "Doom the World" and "Judicial Falsity" are heavy smack downs on America's broken social systems and suffocating hypocrisy. Most importantly, this deeply personal record is characterized by a seething ferocity that acts as a pressure valve for decades of pent up aggression (fear, hatred and disgust too). Not surprisingly "Death of Sorrow" was #15 on the Endless Metal top 30 of 2023. And it may even be higher now, as we continue to listen to this record over and over into 2024. It was thus an honor to interview Sorrow's original and now reformed lineup: Andy Marchione (Vocals and Bass), Bill Rogan (Guitars), Brett Clarin (Guitars), and Mike Hymson (Drums). **** While it may be a point of debate, Sorrow put "death metal" and "doom" on a flier in 1990 and are thus one of the first band's to integrate two of our favorite metal genres. We revisit their (mostly bleak) past, although they played some killer shows in the early 90s with fellow death doom legends Winter and, as the accompanying visual shows, Sorrow headlined a show with another incredibly influential doom band, Grief (now Come to Grief). Prior to becoming Sorrow, the band in the late 1980s cut their teeth as Apparition in Long Island's (New York's) burgeoning extreme death metal scene. A scene where their friends from the obscure (wink, wink) death metal band Suffocation were tearing up now defunct local clubs like Sundance. We learn about the band's early struggles as perpetual outsiders to the scene as well as some classic and harrowing stories from the road. Classic tales are told of Sorrow's ill fated signing to the infamous Roadrunner Records in the early 1990s--the label that released the band's first EP "Forgotten Sunrise" and first proper full length "Hatred and Disgust" (1992)--and then summarily dropped Sorrow barely two years later. Fortunately, the band's last rehearsals of new material were captured on video. Although they considered a reunion circa 2010, it took eleven more years for Sorrow to reunite, re-learn, and properly record a new record. Some 30 years later, thanks to the miracle of home digital recording by Andy (mixing) and Brett (mastering) "Death of Sorrow" was finally given its proper release. While it is highly unlikely that Sorrow will ever play a live show again, there is a possibility we may hear some new music in the future (Sorrow from the Grave?). So turn off the latest news of our corrupt, war ridden world and, indeed, enjoy the gift of Sorrow! Music included in this episode appears in the following order: "Doom the World" by Sorrow "At Dawn They Sleep" by Slayer "Infinite Universe Infinite Death" by Journey into Darkness "Eternal Frost" by Winter "Hidden Fear" by Sorrow "Judicial Falsity" by Sorrow "Leave Me in Hell" by Venom "Flight of the Bumble-bee" by The Great Kat "A Wasted Cry for Hope" by Sorrow "Small Man, Big Fan" by Minor Threat "Dumb and Dumber: So you're telling me there's a chance" "Fracture" by Spacedive "Remembered Eternally" (Complete Track) by Sorrow

The law on flexible working changed this week. New rules should make it easier for employees to argue for a flexible working arrangement. It's the culmination of years of hard work and campaigning for more family friendly workplaces. Anita speaks to the Minister for Small Business, Kevin Hollinrake, and Amy Butterworth from the flexible working consultancy Timewise. Dr Gladys McGarey, cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association, began her medical practice at a time when women couldn't even own their own bank accounts. She's now 102 years old and still practicing as a doctor. She started medical school just before the Second World War, married a fellow doctor, Bill and together they practised medicine and had six children. Dr Gladys joins Nuala to talk about her new book, The Well-Lived Life. The mother whose daughters were murdered, and their photographs then shared on a police WhatsApp group, speaks to Nuala from the launch of a new organisation designed to help stamp out misogyny, sexism and racism in the police. Mina Smallman has become an activist since the death of her daughters in 2020, and she wants to see change. The Irish singer-songwriter Roisin Murphy first rose to fame in the 90s as one half of the electronic pop duo Moloko. She has gone on to have a successful solo career and has a new album out soon. She joins Anita live in the studio to talk about her music and creating this latest album. As the film Barbie opens in cinemas today, Set Decorator Katie Spencer and Production Designer Sarah Greenwood discuss how they created Barbieland in a real life space, the invasion of everything pink, and how they approached the film having never played with Barbies themselves. Voice AI has come a long way in the last few years. Why, then, do we still get asked to provide secret passwords, shoe size and your mother's pet fish's maiden name before anyone at any company will speak to you about your needs? The scope and quality of AI-mediated interactions that are now possible is incredible, but there remain fundamental security challenges that are difficult to overcome. For many interactions, we need to know who the user is claiming to be and be confident that they are that person. Most of these challenges keep companies stuck asking silly quiz questions to validate who you are, instead of using technology to make it easier.Matt Smallman's new book Unlock Your Call Centre: A proven way to upgrade security, efficiency and caller experience covers these challenges in forensic detail and lays out an approach to resolving them using modern technologies such as Voice Biometrics and Network Authentication that is as applicable to Voice User Interfaces as it is to the Call Centre.Matt's book is launched today and he will be joining me live (5pm BST, 12pm EDT, 9am PDT) on the VUX World podcast to discuss the book and it's implications for Voice AI. On this episode of the podcast, we talk with Terry Wildman, founder of Rain ministries and head of the translation team for the First Nations Version, an indigenous translation of the New Testament that involved a council of 12 and over 50 representatives from the native peoples of North America. See the website here: https://firstnationsversion.com/ Order from IVP: https://www.ivpress.com/first-nations-version My co-host for this episode is Dr. Gayle Doornbos, professor of theology at Dordt. Together we discuss: The story behind this indigenous translation of the New Testament and the many contributing scholars The history of colonialism and how the translation team handled English words with negative connotations for native peoples (e.g., sin, kingdom) The unique practice of translating names by what they mean, so that Jerusalem is rendered "Village of Peace" and Paul is "Small Man". What it might mean for the larger body of Christ to receive this new translation as a gift from the native peoples of North America. Terry also reads a beautiful passage of Scripture for us (from Hebrews 1). Here is my written reflection on the translation (which I use in part to introduce the episode): https://inallthings.org/gained-in-translation-a-review-of-the-first-nations-version/
